Is it just me or is the Formula the worst ship? Short range, regular burst burns out in no time, I still haven't managed a single counterburst with it.

The Genesis seems like the easiest to counterburst with, once the beam is active it seems you can just go into the enemy burst beam and get a counter 100%. Of course you have to be careful not to get your option ships shot off because that removes 50% of your charge meter...

Is the Murakumo CS exclusive or can it be unlocked somehow in AC mode?

That was it. Or, specifically, I didn't think to place a laser straight-horizontal right above him as he slides along the bottom to catch everything, as soon as I did that I handled him much better. Thanks!

No worries! Glad to help.

Need some NeoGAF killers to clear some of the 1CC and co-op zones in Cabinet 14 :)

The Silver Hawk Genesis' ridiculous alpha burst counters seem to have piqued the attention of quite a few people at work, so I'll see if I can rope them into smashing through some of the 2/3-player co-op zones during lunch this week :D

Want this so bad but it's just too expensive in my region my only hope is that very few people buy it and so it hits a sale early.

Patch!

  • The refresh rate has been locked to 60 fps to prevent excessive speed on monitors with refresh rates higher than 60Hz.
  • Corrected the behaviour of the "Wave" weapon in CS mode. The weapon was incorrectly piercing through boss enemies instead of colliding with them as intended. (Only Origin and Gaiden were working correctly before)
  • Corrected an error where the burst gauge would not fill up when attacking boss enemies in CS mode.
  • Corrected the text in some scenes where it extended beyond the dialogue window.

Good good.

Corrected the behaviour of the "Wave" weapon in CS mode. The weapon was incorrectly piercing through boss enemies instead of colliding with them as intended. (Only Origin and Gaiden were working correctly before)
Good I guess. I've been surprised by the weapon behaviour a few times when switching modes, but never really internalized the difference.

Corrected an error where the burst gauge would not fill up when attacking boss enemies in CS mode.
Now I know why I've been getting dunked by bosses in CS mode despite being pretty good at AC mode. No more spending tons of points on OP shields, hooray!

Corrected the text in some scenes where it extended beyond the dialogue window.
Ok.

Now, Taito, how about fixing the lack of player names in Chronicle mode?

This was an issue that was pointed out during the beta test, but I guess it's proving problematic to fix.

Thanks for letting me know about that. That gives me a bit less hope that it'll get resolved, so I went ahead and did a refund request. I'll pick it up down the road if they get it working properly.

That is very much not what I meant to imply. It'll get fixed, but clearly it's not a quick issue to resolve. Keep in mind the beta test started a mere five days before the retail release, so there really wasn't any time at all to fix things that were observed during that period. The text wrapping problem that was just fixed was also a bug observed during beta.

It's either not quick to resolve, or it is not a priority. I have accumulated a number of games that have similar issues and often it goes unresolved, or have community developed workarounds, so it's nothing new in general. Better to wait on the sidelines since the game was relatively expensive. I've never actually done a Steam refund because I usually wait too long, but it's the right thing to do.

How in the hell do you counterburst with the NEXT ship?!

Edit: Never mind. Finally figured it out with the Legend. You've got to time it with the third beep you hear from an enemy OR... come in from the side in the tiny window from where your laser charges and before it shoots out.

Edit: Did it with the NEXT. But... game crashed because the series of stages took too long to complete before the crash bug happens. This issue also occurs in the Street Fighter V Beta. Due to the larger player base there the issue is more prevalent. Ever time I beat a series of stages I have to quickly reset the game. I can't enjoy AC mode because it takes to long to reach "checkpoints" for the game to autosave. It sucks

Even though the game is not graphically demanding at all, I do enjoy the mechanical design of both bosses and ships.

Yo, CS mode is so much better post-update. I can actually beat bosses and make progress with the burst ships now!

If you're on PC, the crash bug can be fixed by disabling Windows' Touch Keyboard service. Something else they really need to fix!

Man! I have been trying to fix this on DBCS and SFV forever! THANK YOU! It worked. What's your STEAM name so I can hook you up with something one day.

The original question was specifically in regards to the game being 25% off, which is a GMG thing. GMG isn't a games service; they sell you Steam product codes.

Ah, whoops! Sorry, I didn't read the thread too well there.

I'm Shifty on steam. Glad I could help! :)
Oh, and keep in mind that the service kept re-enabling itself on my machine. You might have to disable it as admin to get it to stick.

Unsung games of 2015: Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours
Fish out of water.

As we wind down towards the end of the year, we get in a reflective mood and inevitably start thinking back to some of the best games of 2015. Eurogamer will be running through its favourite games of 2015 shortly, but before then we thought we'd highlight some of the interesting games you may have missed this year.

Shenmue 3 is a reality. The Final Fantasy 7 remake is actively being worked on at Square. The Last Guardian is an actual video game we will be playing next year. Maybe. 2015 was full of surprises, but all that's small fry to this year's real shocker: the grandiose, operatic 2D shmup, a breed last spotted in the dying embers of the PlayStation 2 era, made a comeback. And what an absolutely stellar, searing return it was too.

It's been so long since we've had something like Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours that it carries something like the shock of the new, helped handsomely along by the otherworldliness of a series that always felt like it had been beamed in from a distant star rather than crafted in a Tokyo studio. This feels as strange and fresh today as it did when Darius debuted back in 1986 with that awe-inspiring triple-screen cabinet.

Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours works as more than just a nostalgic hit - to see it as an old-school shooter is to dismiss the craft that's gone into this package, or how relevant and interesting its chosen genre still is today. They don't get much more interesting than this, either. There's a straight and faithful port of the 2010 game Another Chronicle, complete with the 32:9 aspect ratio that's integral to the experience. Darius is a shooter so cinematic that not even the 2.35:1 of Scope can contain its vision: to see it on a triple-screen monitor is to enjoy it as whatever brilliant gods conceived this intended.

Chronicle Saviours is totally worth it, though, and after a handful of hours it easily justifies its cost. In its steely challenge, its ethereal feel powered by Zuntata's sensational soundtrack, there's a sharp throwback to the great shmup purple patch on PlayStation 2, when Gradius 5 and R-Type Final saw the old guard take one final, graceful bow before the curtain was drawn. In the sprawl of Chronicle Saviours, picking through the history of one of the genre's greatest series, I'm reminded of the melancholic self-reflection of Irem's R-Type Final, though the sadness isn't there. It's been replaced by a joy, and an optimism, that suggests that maybe there is a future for these games after all.

Are you sure that's not in? I recall seeing names on the Chronicles highscore boards lately.

Just had a look, and the closest thing is the 'highest score of all time' readout. That's working as expected, but everything else like 'Player XYZ liberated planet ABC' is local-only.

Shame about the 21:9 support being broke at the moment. Having both CS and AC mode make use of my monitor would be cool. Windowed mode doesn't quite fill the screen.

The game itself is downright fantastic. I'm in love. <3

Darius Gaiden also has way better music, as do previous Darius games. Not that Dariusburst's music is bad. It's just less amazing.

Darius Gaiden was one of my absolute favorite Sega Saturn games! I spent so many hours to get every inch in that game because it was a real bullet hell for me and I suck.

All right. Here are the results for the free copy of DARIUSBURST.

header.jpg

I'm only showing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

1st: Blu(e) - 12
2nd: Seraphis Cain - 11
3rd: Durante, Trailmix, InfiniteNine - 10

I'm going to keep my lists confidential, since I'll probably be doing something similar to this again for the next big release out there. This also lets people know how close they were with their lists this go around. With that said, my mind also changes with time and new releases.

Thanks to those who played.
You were giving it away?! FUCK

The first time I ever heard about the shoot 'em up game Darius, was in the pages of early EGM, for the NEC PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM. Specifically this page from EGM #5, Dec 1989:

Back then in 1989 and 1990, my younger self was like:
"okay Nintendo has Gradius & Life Force series, Sega has Thunderforce series and NEC has Darius series" Haha..

Now, this is kinda interesting. Darius Plus played on a regular PC Engine (equal to the TurboGrafx) vs played on the beefier SuperGrafx.

Notice there's some bad flickering on the boss when its played on PCE, but the flicking isn't noticeable (if there's any at all) when played on the SGX.

So Darius Burst's 21:9 support is currently borked, right?

Well I suddenly had a crazy idea: My LG monitor supports hooking up two inputs and having them be displayed side by side..... what if I hooked it up and made the two screens effectively two 1920x1080 screens...?

It works. :)

Unfortunately it's also a bit of a pain in the ass to set up. Worth it for a game as amazing as this. Also you may notice that the DVI-D connected side is darker color wise for some reason. Not really sure why as nothing I fiddled with got it looking the same on both sides. Nevermind, fixed this. The PC was setting the HDMI to Limited in PBP mode.

Actually playing it was great tho, and I even got my first 1CC although on the easy route.

Bad ass. I'm about to take the plunge and get this dual beast up and running. Can't wait!

I'm not able to play PC/Steam Dariusburst, but are you guys saying the basic 21:9 support is really messed up, without that clever work-around?

I'm guessing it's not messed up for everyone, as people have been posting videos, including off-screen videos, of it working fine across two monitors.

Sorry if I misunderstood.

The aspect ratio of AC mode is 32:9. Using two 16:9 displays side by side has always worked. What is currently not working correctly is displaying the entire 32:9 window in a 21:9 space; it displays, but incorrectly scales the image down both horizontally and vertically, leaving blank space on all four sides.

Yeah, multi-monitor support works fine. It's ultra-wide (21:9) support that doesn't work. My trick was simply running my ultrawide monitor as if it were two monitors instead.

Some other issues the PC port has:

  • Windowed mode doesn't switch automatically between 16:9 (for CS mode) and 32:9 (for AC mode)
  • Cannot rebind start, accept, or cancel. Some DirectInput controllers cannot hit start as all as a result.
  • No option to make CS mode properly fill the screen on 21:9, despite there being more than enough space for it.

After playing this in 21:9 mode, I want this all the time for every game. Just looking at the title screen gives me chills.

This is probably my biggest beef with the port. I NEED dat 21:9. It's so good.
