Destiny |OT38| The 0.04% of the 4%

You'll be glad to know that Netduma's network manipulation is no match whatsoever for the astonishingly terrible Trials MM. Our run was just as laggy as any other, at least for the games that actually mattered after ~6 wins (as is typical).

Haha nothing can beat Bungie's broken matchmaking. Sorry to hear that lag still persists, you guys should try again in 6 months when we get some new content and the pool of players isn't so meager, because like you said in your earlier post there are so few people with matching cards, especially when trying to narrow the pool by location. It's unfortunate Bungie hasn't addressed how the MM change has been negative across the board.

Many thanks to Neo for lending us his Netduma for scientific purposes. We concluded very definitively that Year 2 Trials MM does not give a damn whatsoever about connection quality or geographic proximity once you get later in the card. Shocking news for anyone that's played Y2 Trials, I'm sure.

Neo would set geographic MM limits within the U.S. (or thereabouts) and all our first 4-5 games had green bar opponents. Then at ~7 wins we matched... people from Australia. And Canada. In the same fireteam. With red bar lag monsters as terrible as ever. Then our final boss was a guy with a 3.5 K/D... in Peru. With 900 ms ping to Neo's router. The only thing MM cares about is matching your card... except the pool of available fireteams on your same win # at the same time is exceedingly small so connections are thrown out the window.

Many thanks to Igordennis for actually playing well so that we could miraculously reach Mercury for Neo's first Y2 trip. I played like complete garbage for 90% of the ticket since I was too depressed about how they've ruined the only game mode I enjoy. We got stomped in our very first game which meant we had to win 8 straight to go flawless. I had no expectations for that happening yet somehow Igor got it done. GG gentlemen, as always.

Triple Dutch destroyers experienced the same thing, first 5-6 matches were fine but the final 3 were so laggy and they were getting matched up with players from all over the world. Even having 3 players in the fireteam living within an hours drive of each other can not match with players from the same continent! Worst part being that it starts happening during the final 2-3 games.

Also how can you tell the locations of the opponents, peru, australia, etc?

Who's the Bungie trials guy? I'd like to tweet this to him. This is fucking pitiful.

I'm too salty right now to answer this question with anything other than a sarcastic insult...

*deep breaths*

Derek Carrol I believe? Spelling may be off but that's the name that comes to mind.

The Netduma's geo filtering GUI shows you graphically where your connections are originating from.

It was funny watching how when we hit 6 wins, I had to babysit the router so I wouldn't get disconnected. And then that Australian guy. OMG. But the Peruvian guy takes the cake. I couldn't do damage to him. I don't know how that last second melee got us the 4th win because it did lag for like a second.

Not bad for a "let's play for fun without caring for flawless" run.

I'm psyched we got Neo his first Y2 flawless even if it seemed hopeless about 100 different times along the way. Thanks for actually playing well enough to get it done, unlike me. That was easily one of the top 5 silliest Mercury trips ever, which is saying something at this point.

Thanks for the help. I have been slacking on Destiny quite a bit after the first month of TTK. I guess I'll finally level the titan and the warlock to do the weekly raid.

Word is that he was soooo salty so many people in Y1 got to the lighthouse that he did this POS matchmaking.

Haha i did my best. Playing with such nice fellows such as you and neo always gives me a boost in morale. Like i always say, its a pleasure playing with you drizz 😊
Thanks man, it was really hilarious. Very good kills btw.

Seems the Netduma guys pay for a more accurate geolocation information. I was calling the locations of our opponents according to the geofilter.

Yeah, that's the really shocking part to me: exactly how little the game cares about location. Instead of loosening the skill/card MM (anyone with 4-7 wins maybe) they drop the bottom out from connection quality at the exact time when you need good connections, generally against good teams.

Identifying the locations is a feature of the Netduma. Neo could elaborate in more detail but essentially it gives a general region for where each enemy player is located. He could tell what state in the US or at least what country if they were farther away. Then he could tell the ping between that person and himself, although I still don't understand how the host/P2P aspect of Destiny MM works with this. It's all one giant hot mess.

Drizz asking for a third and I am out grocery shopping. Noooooo

lol it was more of a morbid science experiment than a proper Trials run. I'd make sure to actually play on my own characters with legit gear whenever I'm trying to do a real run.

Usually what you see is something like this (from the Netduma wiki http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=gf_getting_started) :

This is an old example while playing regular Crucible:

7RtK1lv.jpg

This is how I see it zoomed in. It shows the connections.

I don't have a screenshot of the ping bars. Next time I'll see If i can somehow stream Destiny and the Netduma UI, or at least record it.

My initial tweet was mostly different forms of the word "fuck", but I figured that wouldn't really do much for the cause.

Read your post, sounds horrible and pretty damn stupid.

Unfortunately I am from Australia so after reading that it would seem joining your fireteam for trials would likely just cause frustration for you and whoever else in the game. Will get past 7 wins eventually.

Bungie isn't going to do anything about anything because they are in a transition stage where they made their money and released as many content as they can to fulfill casual needs until the next big thing. Hardcore players will stay suffering. Been playing Fallout with a bunch of visual mods, it's like night and day from the console versions. So pretty. I'll boot up Destiny for a few things but I moved on in terms of grinding anything in the game.

Sadly, this seems to be the truth.

They made it pretty clear Trials was switched to win-based over latency in the 2.0 stuff.

Since only a minority of teams will make it to the higher wins, the matchmaking pool selection drops significantly as your wins go ever higher. You can really think of it as 8 separate matchmaking playlists that you progress through as you collect wins.

At that point, the win weight more obviously overcomes the latency weight.

So now you'd have to figure out how to balance matching time to quality of connection. You can wait longer for better connections, but now you have people getting angry over waiting for matches, which can cause runaway depopulation of a playlist (see: Team Arena in Reach, which had the best skill matching of any Halo, but as a result had one of the worst search-to-match times of any Halo playlist)

Good that this Trials wins-over-connection issue is getting some actual exposure with solid proof. Hopefully it catches some wind and Bungie takes notice.

Kadey is 100% right though. :(

3x quick warpriest clears on reset then that's probably all the Destiny I will get time for this coming week. Though with a 319, 318 and a 314 I don't really feel the need to grind anymore.

I will be grinding Diablo instead for a few weeks!

Is there even a special emblem or anything for getting a character to 320?

Bungie literally said they were doing this.

Bungie said:
We will attempt to match up teams with similar win counts.

If you have 1 win, we will try to match you with another team with only 1 win.
If you have 8 wins… yup.

Of course, if there's massive amounts of matchmaking manipulation with firewalls and appliances like Netduma, I wouldn't be surprised if people are actually making it worse for themselves by cordoning themselves all off to their own network islands.

Yeah, this is my feeling on it. I've been playing EDF 2025, and it's so damn satisfying. The weapons are fun and the fights are engaging and visceral in a way where Destinys fights aren't, where dying in EDF means losing actual progress but it also means tackling the situation with a different toolset that is feels and is different.

It's obvious Bungie is primarily focused on Destiny 2. I'm willing to bet whatever was planned for the final 2 dlcs are being worked into that. Like, SRL was nice, but it's not Destiny. It's not what alot of people want out of Destiny.

Here's hoping that Bungie looks at other similar games for Destiny 2.

I really hope we don't have to re-level all of our subclasses when we transition to Destiny 2... though I highly doubt they'll let us walk right into the brand new game with three fully powered subclasses.

Ugh... the subclass grind is something I never want to do again.

Well, they'll probably make us regrind for our exotics for the year 3 versions or whatever. i figure we'll have to level up our subclasses again. I mean, that's half the game right there.

I'm all my gear is 295 and I haven't gotten much luck finding anything. I guess it's at the point where I need to start raiding consistently.

I know what they said. They also said the game would loosen win requirements over connection first. Which is now proven to be clearly not the case. Hence it's an 'issue' that needs attention.

It ruined Trials for a lot of people.

Hey guys! Haven't checked in in a while, are there any news about new content?

Log in by end of the day today, and play any activity from the director to get a new emblem at next reset. That's your new "content".

Anybody remember the trick behind skipping the Crucible portion of the Sword quests?

You can only skip the 25 sword kills on alts, you still have to complete it once on your main.

Once you do, transfer the other sword(s) to your main and infuse/level them up. Talk to Shaxx and you will have skipped the crucible kills part for them, given you have completed it once.

I didn't watch much of the PS4 destiny tournaments last night. How did the matchmaking go? Long searching times? Were all teams able to play together?

Yeah someone explain this to me.

Two groups launch the game mode at the same time, if you are lucky you'll get put against each other. You can watch the teams appear in the roster.

It can help if the two fireteam leaders are geographically close, but the game quickly widens the search.

It can work first try or it can takes ages.

Ok that sounds dumb as fuck to host a tournament then.

No posts in an hour. Ouch.

I need to run one more Oryx CM mode on my hunter, but I should probably just go to LFG and hope for the best.

Okay. So there are some instances where in trials it won't let you revive. Like the bar won't fill up. What the hell.
