Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

We've have had this discussion before, but alot of the stuff Awakening's been guilty has been in the series before.

Without a doubt, but in some ways the context is different. Even the creators have admitted to changing the dialogue to fit more with "modern" tastes. The focus was a tad different than what FE4 was doing. The Avatar also personalizes it, making it so that you yourself are finding a wife/husband, thus playing up to the player a bit more.

However, I'm ultimately agreeing with you. Marriage has been in almost every game since four, since characters often got married at the end of the game. Children were present before, and technically even FE6 was about the children of pairings from FE7. Definitely all things that have existed before. The difference, however, is how it's been focused on, the tone in which it's being used, and the ways the game emphasizes relationships is far different than it's been in previous games. This is where the contention is. People just haphazardly attribute it to the specific mechanic, not how that specific mechanic is executed.

Makes me more likely to buy a 3ds and this game, honestly. I dunno if it should or if that's justifiable but I'm not going to be overly introspective about why I feel that way about a video game.

Good post. I really think it's obvious why people have no issue with 4 but issues with Awakening and on, despite the general mechanics being similar, and yet people always pull 4 out as evidence or defense.

Shame about the changes, but it is understandable. Nintendo has done a lot worse, such as milking the franchise into 2 different versions. The good old days were great, when companies did things like Front Mission 3 and made two campaigns in one game a fantastic value experience.

It's the more common reaction here, but definitely not around the internet. GAF has always been more fine with cut content than other places.

Yea, GAF has always been "Attack On Anime/Japanese Culture"

Lmao so this broke the camel's back for you? K

First Xenoblade X and now this?

Wow Ninty. Please keep removing the creep stuff. I really appreciate it.

What you thought I was playing? Dead serious.

I'm overall indifferent to this news. That feature was tacked on and it added very little to the game, so this removal is not a big loss for me.

I wouldn't have minded if the petting stayed in, though. I was not bothered by it. I would have probably spent a few minutes with this feature out of curiosity, and then returned to the actual game. People who don't like that portion of the game would have the option to not touch it at all.

This just feels like some attempt to make the game more kid-friendly, but it is unnecessary to do this for T and M-rated games. Nintendo needs to stop that.

My real problem with the localization is the butchering of the character names so far. The changes for Harold, Zero, Belka, and Shara are really bad.

I'll still be getting the game, but the Treehouse localization has left a somewhat bad first impression.

I didn't particularly care about the face petting (and honestly found it somewhat off-putting), but I can't get behind the idea of cutting features like this wholesale without a replacement being a good thing.

I also agree with Sakurai.

Do yu get the difference between cutting content during development and cutting it way after the game has been released?

You're right, but this is content being cut that already exists in the actual, released product in the Japanese version. Of course people aren't going to complain about cut content they never knew existed.

it's nintendo cutting content they think will put people off from their own game.

and that's fine because it's shit. cutting shitty content will never be a bad idea, too many games are bloated with excess junk anyway.

Do we really need a Fire Emblem dating sim?

Do some of you really want that? I know the genre is getting popular recently. Some of you are genuinely heartbroken by this.

Considering the success of Awakening, I'd say that the answer is likely yes for most lol.

They should have added a giant hug button on the touchscreen that elicit similar, if less explicit, reactions from the characters instead of axing the feature entirely with no replacement.

Because it's a feature a lot of people didn't want? Not sure what's hard to understand about that.

I didn't give two shits about petting pokemon in X and Y. Does that mean I shouldn't care if it was removed for other countries?

To call this censorship would be an insult. It's one thing to change a piece of dialog, but there's nothing objectionable about the content they removed here. It's a bunch of suits who got together and decided that it either wasn't worth the cost to localize, or for some strange reason thought the whole american market wouldn't want it anyways. The only scenario this would have been acceptable is if this were going to bump the esrb rating up to a Mature rating
which obviously it would not
.

I think it's fair to say that I want a game with an identical feature set to it's Japanese counterpart.

I can't support Nintendo being my nanny like this. I'm cancelling my SE order and might hold off on a regular purchase.

The dating sim elements in Awakening were the best part. I don't think it needs this petting stuff, really, but I'm not celebrating its removal. I am committed to buying this game, regardless.

There is actual extra dialogue going on during these interactions. Quality varies but it's not all just throw away giggles and contented sighs. At the very least Nintendo do could have made it optional free dlc so people who don't care for it can avoid it and those who want it can still have it.

That's kind of overstating it. It's one sided and one note dialog doesn't happen without 2 people.

But maybe people value their "rabu rabu rabu rabu u" sentences a lot.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
because not every piece of entertainment media can be all things to all people. every developer in the history of the medium has made choices about what their game is and isn't going to be.

You mean localization efforts? Int System didn't (presumably) decide to cut this.

There's a difference between devs cutting stuff for whatever reason, and localization changing things for a different region.

Not saying its inherently good/bad or passing judgement, but it's not the same thing.

Funny how this same argument works against you as well.

Seriously reconsidering my SE now.

This is extremely disappointing. =/ I understand the complaints about the feature (but, like...just ignore it if you don't like it?), but I think a lot of people fail to realize that for gay individuals like myself, this feature was really nice because, as far as I understood, you could use this "petting" feature on any character, including characters of the same sex as your avatar. This was the only way to have any sort of intimacy with same-sex characters outside of the single male and female characters that you can marry with a same-sex avatar. While it's great that the same-sex marriage is still there, and it's certainly a big step up from Awakening that featured none of it, it's still extremely disappointing that there was even more that we could have had, but of course they cut that out of the localization. =/

I can relate to this a bit.

Unfortunately, I don't think most other people have considered it, either. Everyone's so quick to say "fuck that, it's creepy and I don't need it," and yeah, I understand that the feature can be kind of weird, and I understand how it can seem unnecessary to straight individuals who already have the option to marry any character of the opposite sex, but it's so much more limited for people who are attracted to the same sex. I thought having this mini game was really cool because it allowed them to include intimacy between characters of all genders separate from the marriage feature so there'd be no need for controversy over gay marriage, but apparently this petting feature is even more controversial than that. I mean, that's cool that the extremely limited instances of gay marriage in the game are being accepted so well, but LGBT individuals are still getting the short end of the stick here. We could have had it better, but nope, gotta remove that bonus content from the localization just because people bitched about it. =/

Yeah, people need to broaden their perspective on how this might affect someone other than the "Otaku" personalities they visualize so vividly in their brains.

Huh. This was not a perspective I considered.

I have really mixed opinions on this. On the one hand, this is the first instance of Nintendo removing or censoring something that actually is a part of the gameplay. On the other hand, the mode would feel weird and is really out of place for the series. On the other, other hand:

Not really. You do miss out on a ton of dialogue though w/ your potential spouse.

We miss out on character interactions. This is my biggest gripe with the removal of the minigame alongside missing out of that CG work. But on the other other other hand, if it was all voiced it could have simply been removed for financial reasons even that wouldn't be the entire reason.

I guess what Im trying to say is that I guess I'm fine with the change, even if I find removing the character interactions that come with it very irksome. I'm honestly more worried about what sort of precedent this sets. No way in hell #FE is coming here without getting altered in 100 different ways.

It looked kinda hilarious with the burlier dudes but it's not like I'll miss this. Probably would've forgot about it after one use.

People celebrating cut content confuse me. Disappointing, but not surprising given NoA being prudish.

I hope the translation isn't bad or filled with memes. I hope they adjust support affection to account for it.

I would rather have extra shit than nothing. Or better replace that shit with something decent.

Notes on what exactly? Folks who were boycotting the game before and are now going to buy this game just continue to set up the same exact cycle.

Just because the content isn't in the version of the game you're buying now doesn't mean it didn't exist. They'll continue to crank out the same "disgusting" content you hate in these games because theres a market for them and the other branches of Nintendo can cut out content and continue to sell those games because people will buy them anyway. You're supporting the stuff you claim to hate with your wallet now.

Sadly you're right, but I wish whoever there is suggesting this shit is at least a little moved by other parts of the world going "fucking no!".

Personally, I lost any and all interest in this game as soon as it became apparent they'd double down on the weirdo stuff, so yeah. Not buying either way. I'd like to think I'm not the only one.

Mixed feelings.

Never was going to use that feature at all..so I'm fine.

and yet idk if I like this trend of people complaining about stuff to get it changed.

I'd rather have games localized in the closest manner to their Japanese counterpoint...culturally weird stuff and all.

#FE might as well not even come out now. Its going to be butchered to appease people who still won't give it a chance.

Honestly, if we're going this far, NOA should remove all manaketes from the game as they are a thousand times more offensive than face petting.

The picking and choosing of what dumb offensive content remains and what dumb offensive content stays is very annoying to me.

:<

Naw, people even bitch about the tame stuff.

Yes?

*looks at several threads about Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan and many more popular series*

Okay
*looks at all the bannable Vita and Japanese/Anime culture threads about people bitching on a weekly basis* Heck even the anime OT gets it fair share. Pls

I hope you realize that this completely rely on your tastes, and you wouldn't agree with someone saying the same towards the removal of content you liked.

Thank you. After your campaign for Tomodachi Life, I would hope you supported this feature and it's really disappointing that so many are happy for its removal.

Are My Castle battles online only?

You need a connection, but they weren't actually online battles (although there's an online vs mode too).

There was a free DLC map too though. And you wouldn't need a connection there after the download.
