Is this game starting to look visually decent or is it just that it's late and I'm tired?

Neh it is.

Even though i've been hating on this game's visuals since day 1, i have to give them props for polishing it up to it's current state. The animations are looking a lot better now...

Robert looks like Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean. K' looks like K'. Benimaru doesn't really look like Benimaru. Hope gameplay remains solid. I really enjoyed KoF 13.

I never really got into a King of Fighters but I did have some of the old ones. I'm not familiar with the characters at all, but what is this with "16 teams" in the game? Are they pre-determined teams, and not like a Tag battle where you select your two characters?

It's a 3v3 game where you make your own teams, but only a few games in the series have tag functions, the rest are just alternating 1 on 1 matches style.

The 16 teams is 16 teams that are predetermined in the storyline.

Still not feeling the character art...KoF is known for its spritework. I get it, cost reasons, but they could have at least pushed more into a Xrd style.

I just realized one of the things that's bothering me the most: the backgrounds are so devoid of life. KOF's stages were always just so packed with spectators and other things going on behind the fighters. These are just so empty and lifeless.

You're free to choose any characters for your team comp, but traditionally all KOF characters are grouped into teams of 3, with each team having its own name.

Also, whenever you played arcade mode, if you picked a full team, it would have different cutscenes specific to that team...

The pre-determined teams are only there for the lore. KoF's story is a big deal for some people, I shit you not.

When you're playing versus you can chose any character to form your own team.

Fuckers better bring back the Old Men team.

Oh, so you don't really tag? Rather, it's 1 on 1, and if one dies, it gets replaced by your second character, and then your third character. Like normal Team Battle right?

There have been tag-team titles in the series, as well as "striker" based titles, but traditional KOF is team of 3 with 1v1 until you wipe out your opponent's team...

Yeah, that aquarium sure has less activity than the old one.

But at the same time, after SF4 and 5's overload of annoying spectators jumping around, I prefer more subdued stages.

They absolutely should bring back having your team mates in the BG watching.

Wouldn't surprise me if they decide to do backgrounds dead last for optimization sake... With XIII they went waaaaaaaaaay overboard, that I set them to static whenever i was playing...

Say what you want about the graphics, but SNK has absolutely nailed the 2D -> 3D transition in terms of attacks having 1:1 frames to previous iterations. Old timers will feel right at home, just like when Xrd made the 3D jump. :)

I think we all need to realize the insane work ASW put into XRDs engine and that it will not be the norm nor is it as easy as just do it.

also have to think about how small XRDs cast is out the gate whereas KOF probably requires at miminum 24 peeps due to its team systems. This game will have 50 characters out the gate. That is pretty insane. Also who knows what else the game will have. and I don't think there will be an arcade version.

XRD was a very special (and awesome) case that came with some setbacks as well.

Its not fair to expect every game to just be able to XRD it up.

Its not easy to do at all. Arc created a bunch of techniques themselves to get Xrd looking the way it does. SNK hasn't been in full game development for a while now so they're not aware of how to fully develop for all of the new engines ,systems, etc. They just recently started building their gaming division back up. I think all they really need is some type of shader at this point. The animations and character themselves are looking better for the most part. Its just whatever shader they're using (or lack of) makes the game look incredibly flat and lifeless. Hopefully, KoF14 does well and SNK can come back fully.

It's definitely looking better. Like to a point where I can now deal with the graphics. I'm not happy with them, but I can at least deal with them, unlike the initial reveal. Hopefully it looks better still the next time it's shown.

Also, I'm totally digging Robert's stache.
