Firewatch |OT| With Me

Seems I unintentionally glitched the game. I am pretty sure where I am is not supposed to be accessible, but I accidentally clipped through what was probably supposed to be an invisible wall, but now can't get back through it. See the following two screenshots for where I am/non-detailed tree geometry, meaning I was never supposed to get back here.

I know don't know how to get back over to the other side and might have to reload. This is pretty frustrating.

I'm on PS4.

I'm not a frame-counting crazy and I don't mind that this can't constantly hit 60 on PS4, but it's the huge variance that is kind of getting to me. The lurching combined with the personal preference of the controls feeling weird (horizontal starting slowish and suddenly getting crazy fast, vertical being slow compared to horizontal) is kind of detracting from the experience for me. If PSN did refunds I'd bail out and buy it on Steam instead.

Trying to put that aside, I'm enjoying the game so far (starting day two). Great writing, absolutely gorgeous.

Edit: This is going to be one of those games where I hit Share ten billion times. (Is screenshot hoarding a thing?)

Really loving this so far. The dialogue is excellent. Well written and naturally acted with the leads playing off of one another quite well.

The visual stylings and atmosphere are fantastic too. Just wandering around and taking in the ambient sounds and scenery is relaxing and engaging. Performance leaves a lot to be desired but it hasn't had a major effect on my experience so far.

I dunno if this is a known issue or not, but I hastily requested a steam refund because the game wasn't running well for me, then discovered a fix and got it to work so I started playing and got an email saying my refund went through even though I was in game. I finished the game and once I quit out my license was revoked. So I basically ended up playing the game for free.

I bought the PS4 version to make up for it.

So here's an interesting issue.

The game cycles the menu as if the down arrow key is pressed.

Not quite sure how to fix this. Any solutions?

edit: Looks like steam forums are full of users with the same problem.

When you start the game your character constantly rotates left and looks down...

edit 2: If anyone else is having this problem you have to uninstall Vjoy drivers and restart.

I'm not one to complain about performance but holy fuck does this game run like ass on PS4. Been playing it for two hours now and the game just froze. :/

As someone who is an avid Panic software user, and has been nearly daily for more than half a decade, this is an utter disappointment so far that I'll expand on when I finish the game...

Two questions: I'm on day
seventy-something
. How much longer time-wise am I from finish, and what day does this game end?

You are pretty close.

Yeah, the performance annoyed me quite a bit, but my PC couldn't handle it so I got a refund on steam and got it on PS4. Nothing unbearable, though I did run into a couple of places I got stuck between trees and things like that.

Absolutely loved the ending. Absolutely loved the atmosphere, absolutely loved the plot and the ambience sounds. 9 out of 10 and a 10 out of 10 if a performance patch hits. I don't know, just got shivers the whole way through. I thought The Witness was my GOTY but I think this may have surpassed it. The passage of the days was incredible.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I've gotta say, when you try to make an explorative adventure game your main issue is always the emptiness of the world and how you justify it, and I really like the way this game deals with communication. The conversations could be more dynamic to me, but it's still such a clever way to connect you to something while exploring.

Also think the hard divisions of events into jumpcuts are so unique. What other game tells a story like this? All I can remember is Thirty Flights Of Loving, where you get slammed into a new situation and it moves the narrative along in a pretty brilliant way compared to most linear stories.

Beat it. Didn't really like it. Running around exploring felt pretty boring to me and the story wasn't good enough to compensate. I will say that the dialogue is well written and the tense scenes are really good, but the overall narrative feels like its building up for the whole game and then just fizzles out without a climax. Kind of an unsatisfying game to be honest, and I'm usually pretty lenient when it comes to story heavy games with a lack of gameplay elements. The story just didn't do it for me.

Holy FUCK, what am I supposed to do after I find the
kid's hideout?
The objective says
explore deeper into the cave
and I got the
hooks
but don't see any way to go back into the
cave
or progress anywhere else, I am just stuck in this tiny area. Any guidance? :(

Edit: Figured it out. That was way too goddamn subtle.

Go back to the kids hideout. There's an exit with a cliff. You're supposed to use the hooks on a rock that's behind the cliff.

I got stuck there too for a while.

Gotta agree with this. I liked the environment and the dialog was pretty good, but there's no meat to the game. The build up was great... the conclusion? Meh. It also doesn't help that the game is padded out. Beat the game in 4 hrs flat, but that was with me exploring every nook and cranny
with absolutely no payout
. And half that time was easily just trekking across the entire map every time you needed to do something.

You can't go back the way you came. Go past the
hideout
, there's a little spot to get out near the table. Go all the way until you hit the cliff. To your left you'll see a
rock with a big black crack in it to put the hook in.

Thanks guys. I'm half an idiot and half think that was a bit subtle (looked around there and somehow didn't get the prompt). Anyhow, wanna finish this tonight, hope I'm close to the end.

Trust me, I did the same thing.

And you're not far off from the end.

Overall its a net positive experience but the 2nd half of the game and ending don't do anything for me and really hampered my enjoyment of the overall product. Glad I played it but will probably never touch again. Too much [comparison to another game]
Gone Home
for my taste.

Overall, I enoyed it. Granted it was a tad bit short, those 4 hours were concise enough to make the whole experience feel very valuable.

Olly, I've been a fan of your's since the Emptees days. Truly outstanding work. The lighting was killer... I couldn't stop taking wallpaper-worthy screenshots. I especially liked all the book covers as well.

The overarching narrative was pretty confusing though...
If the dad was the one stalking them all along, why was there that research tent in the fenced off area?

Also,
why were the items belonging to the girls in the father's hideout?

Ahh, so many questions.

1am on the west coast, I just finished the game in a single sitting. Beautiful visuals, best voice acting I've ever heard in a video game, great writing, and intriguing story throughout, until the end. It felll flat for me, even though I understand what they were trying to do.

Even with its technical flaws on PS4, it was an enjoyable experience well worth the money, IMO. I am excited to see what Campo Santo does next.

As a person who can't stand horror games with jump scares being at the top of my list of things I hate, anyone who beat the game mind answering a few questions for me?

I'll spoiler tag just in case.

I read there is one jump scare in the game and another "optional" one. What kind of jump scares are we talking about here? I mean if it's something like opening a cabinet and some bats come flying out all of a sudden, I'll jump but I can handle it. But if it's something like turning around and there's a freaky looking person standing right behind you, I will definitely want to turn the game off right there and then. If its the latter, could anyone tell me where or when it happens?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the optional jump scare as I don't think I ran into it, but for the inevitable one it's more harmless than bats coming out of a cabinet. Absolutely nothing like turning around and having a freaky looking person staring back. It's pretty harmless. I hate jump scares and am very susceptible to them, and this didn't bother me at all and just barely startled me. I was able to continue playing and finish the game in the same sitting/at night.

Are the issues on PS4 comparable to the slowdown/stuttering points & creeping, low-level motion sickness of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture?

Are they worse? I'm so torn on waiting for a patch & getting this tomorrow when I get paid.

Playing on ps4 noticed performance issues but not half as bothered by these as many folks seem to be they're not that noticeable with auto save turned off.

I just saw an image of
a burned lookout tower
posted on the screenshot thread. Is that a spoiler, like
a trashed lookout tower
would be? Hopefully not, and if it is, I can't shake my head enough for people posting such things without properly tagging them this close to the release.

I just played through the whole thing in one (long) sitting, and I wish I'd let it sit with me more. I didn't spend enough time really thinking about much of it, and as a result some of the late game turns were . . . they didn't land smoothly. I think this is the sort of game that will probably withstand repeat playthroughs.

I love this game, only just started day 2 as I got kicked off the PC last night, but man I can't wait to get back to it tonight.

The audio is fantastic.

I loved the ending, it's
so atypical for video games. I loved how they weren't interested in having any big reveal. I even expected some kind of escape from a forest fire, to add a sense of urgency. But they just had the least spectacular ending possible (a great conversation between the leads), and that was refreshing to see. It's gutsy and daring for this medium, even though it shouldn't be.
(if that makes any sense :p)

Beat the game. Don't want to talk about the ending but one thing is outstanding for me (no really spoilerish) :
the feel of paranoia. Alone in this canyon/forest and you know there is maybe someone who stalks you... I was pretty tensed most of the time. Never got this feeling so heavy before in a video game
.

What I love too is the leading open world. I don't know if it's just me but many times I just got the feeling that the world is leading me very naturally to my target even if it gives me the feeling of freedom and I can explore things. Only 1 or 2 times this wasn't the case. Great job by the devs!

played for two hours or so when I experienced a hilarious bug that seems to break a script, making it impossible to progress. I spent thirty minutes or so wandering around without an objective before I started to suspect something had broken. my only option appears to be starting over--which is fine--but i think i'll take a few days off to reset before starting again.

Just started playing. I'm 50 minutes in and just about to start Day 2. Really liking it so far. The game is beautiful looking and enjoying the dialogue.

Oh FFS absolute disaster! Looks like I'll have to restart my game after putting 4 hours into it last night. I've went and missed picking up the
turtle
on day 2. Wasted my entire time.

I don't suppose you can grab it later on in the game? I just really want my

Nothing against you but I am pointing it out because there are other people who are doing it as well.
But this is a terrible way to spoiler tag something and no better than spoiler tagging the entire sentence with no hint on what it is about.

Anybody else had the screen go blurry when coming out of the pause menu? PS4 version here.

Yeah this happened to me too last night! Restarting the game worked.

On another note, it seems that my save on PS4 has broke.

Got to the part where you break into the camp to investigate it. Complete that bit and the new mission is to return to the "Two Forks Lookout" which I do and nothing happens. What the hell? Going to have to start again aren't I? :(

Crossposting from performance thread:

I've been walking around in the first area for about 10 minutes to fiddle with graphics settings, but is the game supposed to look like this?

It looks overly... contrast-y? It's not very pleasing to the eyes. I tried watching some gameplay on YouTube but compression makes it hard to compare.

Edit: Settings are set to high/ultra

I play in High and it does not look like this. Except maybe at night.

I just beat it, took what four hours? Which is a little shorter after hearing other people played for 6-8.

I feel like I might of missed a lot of stuff, is it worth replaying and picking different dialogue choices?

Also I heard online that some people
Got the Day 1 trophy and missed lot of others. Do the days pass the same for everyone or is it dependant on your choices? I got them all.

Well I'm playing at night, so maybe it's that. I really do have the feeling something's off though :(. I'll play a little further and see how it looks during a different time of day.

Thanks for this, very helpful. Hopefully someone can chime in about the "optional" one.

Made it to day 3 last night. Really enjoying it so far. The dialogue and atmosphere are both entertaining and I want to explore the forest some more. It's funny how I've been programmed in games to try to "get the girl" with flirtatious conversation. Here I simply told her
I'm married and my wife has an illness. I expected the game to "punish" me for saying so by immediately indicating that Delilah's interest has waned. Instead, she provided heartfelt concern like a real person
.

I have the background splattered across my phone, mac, pc and PS4. When I woke up this morning, this scene popped into my mind:
