I'm in Hong Kong airport waiting for next flight and it's like 3am pst so I can't message anyone so I thought I would start a thread.

I wanna hear people's stories about best and worst things they experience flying.

I just took a shower in an airport lounge for first time and I feel refreshed! The shower was huge, almost spa like. The flight was relaxing with good meals and I got a decent nap. This was a good flight experience so far.

I like flying personally.

Worst part of flying is dealing with American airline companies, holy shit are they bad.

Luckily I dont have to deal with them often as I dont live in the States.

Love taking off.

Hate the idea of dying in a burning fireball, still being concious, strapped to my seat, all the way down from 40,000ft.

Love Landing.

..that's about it really

I love the excitement of going on a holiday, because that's the only time I use planes. I have to be near a window. I love looking out, even when it's just clouds.

I really don't like crashing and dying though. Definitely in the top 5 pet peeves.

Absolutely hate turbulence.

There was a period ago when I had a LOT of flights. I thought traveling by air was already second nature, then we got hit by a bad turbulence in Wellington. It felt like a maybe a 10 foot drop.
Not fun when you can see the crap weather on the windows. Even when we were almost landing I was already bracing for really bad landing like the wheels not touching properly or something.

Best part I dunno. Probably window shopping at the airport.

I seriously hate flying. Its such a pain, unless you fork over a chunk for good seats on a reputable airline. I just came back from HK and Japan to the US, and the flight and connections were brutal. Airline food was abysmal. Plus I hate waiting around in an airport.

The meals are getting really good. My flight had a menu prepared by David Hawksworth who's one of the best Canadian chefs.

Much better then the garbage I would get on United flights across North America.

I usually just sleep on the plane.

Only time I took a shower was when they overbooked my flight one time. I think I received $500 credit voucher and $100 same day expiring food money for the airport. Took that. Judy proceeded to relax and get drunk for 3 hours. Got this big cheeseburger that I was going to eat the remainder on the plane, but ended dropping it on someone who didn't want to move when moving down the isle.

That would be the best. Worst was waiting at DFW for 10 hours. They have no food or anything there once you arrive.

I hate take off, landing and turbulence. Because those are the times I think I am most likely to die.

And and worst of all. Seating. I am 6'5" and seating has been hell for me, even with aisle seats ever since I got on my first plane at 14.

Hate bringing luggage around, waiting in lines, being uncomfortable or bored on flights.

Love everything about airports and aside from the mentioned uncomfort, being in the air. Airport atmospheres are great, though. I'd like to work in one.

Even turbulence or whatever doesn't bother me. I like earthquakes as well though so shrug.

I like waiting in airports. I can usually get into a lounge with free food, booze, and drinks. Then I can get stuff done or just people watch.

Edit - waiting in lines sucks but just get tsa pre checked.

I know people hate long haul flights but I tend to really enjoy them as allowing me to absolutely binge on a bunch of movies which is something I normally otherwise would never do.

last long haul flight I had the seats free next to me and was really comfortable though - which helps for sure

Also I know this is contentious - but I hate recliner seats - people can easily sleep sitting up and it just sucks to be part of the domino of having to recline your seat just for a little space as the guy in front of you is all the way back

Love the feeling of taking off and touching down. Absolutely hate taxiing around at the airport. It just provokes the strongest feeling of impatience and annoyance for me.

Also, all other things about flying are pretty shitty.

Everything up to the actual takeoff. Buying tickets sucks, going through security sucks, waiting in the terminal or even on the tarmac sucks(only to fucking find out that your plane is delayed), it all sucks. When those wheels leave ground I relax, because at least at that point things are pretty much guaranteed to go the way they are supposed to.

It's like the poor little tadpole and his chances of actually making it to the frog stage without any hitch.

Like: Actually flying, especially if I get a window seat. Just the sensation of being in the air is cool.

Hate: Waiting around, landing. I was ill on a flight to Germany once and although I managed not to hurl, the landing was not pleasant, and it just kinda ruined landings for me heh.

My ears always hurt during landing and get contantly clogged while in the air, both to varying degrees depending on how sick I am. If I have a nasty cold then the 20 minutes of descent will be the worst kind of pain I've experienced (happened twice). So I don't like it.

I've been pretty lucky last 3 years and been able to fly business or first exclusively but before I had to fly economy all the time and people who recline in economy are assholes. With that shitty tray and being tall means using a laptop when someone is reclined is kinda uncomfortable.

There's the tabris post we were expecting. "lounge" in the OP was too subtle.

I hate everything about flying, is not a pleasant experience for me.

the wait
the claustrophobia
the turbulences
the food
the headache and ear pain

Unfortunately, returning to the US from abroad forces you to check out with your luggage, drag everything to the domestic terminal, and go through the whole checking in process all over again if you're taking a connecting flight. I have no idea if this is how it is with other countries, but it's so darn silly that I can avoid this step by landing in Canada first.

Lol hate to disappoint.

But in all seriousness, once you suffer through economy enough to build up your miles / status and learn the ways to get upgrades. It's pretty easy to fly business/first every time.

Flying becomes pleasant then.

I hate the constant feeling that I'm about to die. I know it's irrational, unfortunately fear is rarely something you can rationalise your way out of. I grip the arm rests the whole way. Turn completely pale and swear uncontrollably if there's the slightest turbulence.

I love when someone interesting sits next to me, and I can talk the whole way. It distracts me from my fear and I love learning about someone else's life that I'd never have met under normal circumstances.

The worst part for me is disembarking from the plane. I swear people reach a new, previously unattainable level of slowness when they're getting their shit from the overhead and making their way down the aisle after landing.

Also dislike the moment when you land and you get that 'I'm here' feeling, before realising you're probably going to spend the next 20 minutes taxiing to the gate.

Yeah I bet. I barely even mind the boredom of 12 hour flights if I have nothing to do, the eventual discomfort is much worse. If I could just recline and relax I'd have no complaints.

Love: takeoff and landing, view out the window, night flights with almost empty plane, sexual games and activities, some of the flight meals, cute stewardess.

Hate: cramp spaces, no leg room, babies crying, ear clogged due to pressure, long duration, full flights

Do share details! I tried business once, I can't go back hahaha ;__;

  • Love to be able to go across the world in a matter of a day
  • Love to see how small the world is when viewed outta a flying plane
  • Hate the idea of crashing somewhere with pretty much 0% of surviving incase we were to fall outta that height.

I did my fair share of flying inbetween European countries and going to America and back to Europe. It's crazy to think I could be 4000 miles away from home in a matter of 10 hours. As far as my airline experience goes, I have to say all my flights within the Star Alliance have been very pleasant within realistic expectations. I don't expect the food to be that great or any comfort since flying is just function rather than an experience to me, but with all considered I have to say the Star Alliance flights I did, especially with Lufthansa (LH) have been excellent still catering to me in both aforementioned factors.

My first flight home to Europe with Lufthansa is something I'll never forget. It was an overnight flight but the flight crew did an excellent job ensuring everyone's best comfort. I got two meals (dinner and breakfast), a desert, some wine as celebration for crossing the European border, and there were TVs in the back with complimentary earbuds in every seat with movies to watch and music to listen to. I felt very comfortable there.

I view it like driving, as a necessary thing but I'd prefer to be doing other things. The wait, going through security, overpriced and generally mediocre food...meh. It sucks that a 45 minute flight can take 4-5 hours out of a day.

The best part is seeing the earth from a different perspective.

I love the sexy air hostesses on Singapore Airlines. I actually brought their uniform so that my GF could wear it around the house.

Here's what miles/status and flying experience gets you:

1) book your vacation flight for free
2) arrive at airport and go to short business/first line for check in.
3) skip long security lines using nexus / tsa pre heck and go into line air crew use.
4) go to lounge and get free coffee and breakfast
5) board first not waiting at all
6) comfy sleep pod seat with big screen tv
7) get some pretty amazing meals, along with pillow and blanket. Get tipsy on free booze.
8) get off first
9) go to lounge and shower up. Sobering up with coffee and snacks.
10) get on and off your connection flight first
11) get your luggage first.
12) limo pickup service to hotel

It was worth the 2 years of economy flying.

Just another Tabris bragging thread, nothing to see here, move along

Also lol at "people who recline in Economy are assholes", if I paid for the seat you can bet your ass I'm gonna use it to the greatest extent possible.

I've been flying alone on the regular since I was 5, so, it's pretty well second nature at this point.

Have trouble sleeping on them, but love looking out the window and just generally relaxing.

Worst flight has to be between one when I was 14, and my last flight.

The one when I was 14, it was from Melbourne to Hobart on Tiger Airways. My aunt and I were rushing to their terminal, and my aunt literally dislocates her knee on the way. We get there, there's about 5 minutes before check in closes, but they refuse to check me in, saying they already finished the paperwork and didn't want to do it again. This is the last flight to Tasmania on any carrier that day, and my aunt was taking her own flight back to Canberra in a few hours. So, while my aunt is a crying mess in the corner, cradling her knee on the phone to my mother to tell her, I walk up to the desk, and just ask "What are you going to do with me overnight? I'm 14, I'm an unaccompanied minor for this flight, and it's the last back to the state today. I'm your responsibility, who's going to take care of me? Where are we going to stay tonight? What flight will I be put on tomorrow?" I just see them go pale and freeze up in panic, before they stutter that they'll ask if they can redo the paperwork. They literally push me through security, telling me I'll miss the plane otherwise... The plane that arrived over an hour later. Tiger, Australia's worst air carrier I swear.

My last flight was from Sydney to Philadelphia, so, a grand total of 26hrs of travel. SYD-LAX was alright, and so was LAX-DTW (I think that's the shorthand for Detroit). I land in Detroit, the Delta app tells me my plane onwards has been delayed by 2hrs. No big deal, I get some dinner and head to the gate. One of the other passengers explains that we were waiting on a plane to come in from Minnesota, they had people connecting onto our flight and we're delayed. After a while though, they take the plane that was at our gate waiting for us for some other flight, and now we have to wait on a plane from Minneapolis. That's another 2hr delay. Midnight, plane from Minneapolis arrived...and our pilots time out, they're not allowed to fly anymore hours. So, we have to wait another 4hrs from a plane from Boston, and then as we're boarding the plane 8hrs after we were supposed to depart, Control tried to make us change planes (which fortunately, ground staff talked then out of). But it gets better, I arrive in Philly, I joke to my boyfriend about how the cherry on the cake of this bullshit would be if they lost my luggage. Well... Turns out my luggage obviously wanted to see the strip, because it got sent to motherfucking Las Vegas. I didn't even stop in Vegas. When I do get it back, they've broken a few of my possessions in transit (I have a hard case, I went and got good quality proper luggage for my overseas trips). I get in contact to try and get some reparations for the broken stuff, but, it was qualified as 'extraordinary circumstances' and as far as they were concerned, not their problem.

I actually had a pretty good impression of Delta from the last time I came over, but this time, not so much

Pretty much love every part of flying other than boarding and security checks.

E.g. I flew with Ryanair a few days ago. Great on the way in; on the way back though, right before boarding, they wanted me to put my small backpack into the cargo due to "space limitations". Never mind that people with massive carry-on luggage were not being asked to do so. I spent some time arguing with them about it in front of the whole boarding queue and eventually they relented.

They gave me a tag to put on the backpack that reads "if any of the following [bullet points of damage/losses with checkmarks] happen to this bag, we ain't accountable! Verified by [space for the employee to sign]". The staff refused to fill the checkmarks or sign, and refused to answer questions about the policy. This made a lot of people in the queue quite angry.

I'm now adding Ryanair to my flying shitlist.

Because of my personal issue I fly a lot, now less than before, but still more than your everyday dude.

Love how fast it is to bring me where I want to go.
Love how gives me time to read a book/play a game/listen some music with no interruption.
Love the people that you meet on the plane.

I hate how flying requires all those stupid and useless magical rituals that exist only to exorcise the primordial fear of flying, like the "security" checks (that as far as I know have never managed to do anything more than give headaches) the "check-in" and so on.

Love it when the plane starts going really fast and takes off.

Love the view when in the air on a bright day.

Hate the fact my ears start hurting when we are going to land, the last time I flew it was really painful...

Oh god that reminds me, last time I was in the States, Delta tried to get me to pack my fabric messenger bag in cargo to my destination. I stared at them, slowly pulled out my ticket that said my final destination was Sydney, Australia, and they hurriedly shooed me down the aerobridge no more questions asked

Most of my first regular flying was done in and out of New York after 9/11. It's dumb, but every takeoff I would worry about something happening. At first. Now, I get on a plane and basically come to terms with my life. I might not survive, I accept that. And it's dumb and certainly a feeling that would be more relevant elsewhere, but a great feeling nonetheless and now I always appreciate the habit of getting on a plane, accepting my fate, and then proceeding to occupy my time until landing with fun.

Love: It means going on holiday. Love that on long flights it really feels like you've got a solid block of time away from everything and you can really get some solid TV watching / podcast listening in. Like window shopping at the airport. Like being short and never really being cramped in my seat.

Hate: waiting around! Hate that travelling with a person in a wheelchair means that sometimes you get amazing treatment, being able to use business class check-in, free premium economy seats and skipping all the queues, yet other times it means horrible treatment, delays, and idiot staff having no clue how to deal with a (surely) common issue.

I got a first class ticket once solely because I am military, that was neat. Didn't even ask, wasn't even in uniform, the lady at the counter simply upgraded me. Wish that happened more.
