Far Cry Primal – Bringing The Stone Age to Life

Karak (or anyone playing this) you can answer this but one thing I've found veeeeery disappointing with Far Cry 3/4 in comparison to 2 (one of my favourite games) was the weather system/sound design in terms of different times of day/weather etc. In 2 you could really feel each day in Africa - when it was sunny or when it was raining or during the middle of the night the sound was absolutely amazing. Howling wind, rain etc. It felt like an afterthought in 3 and 4 to me. It felt like the weather naturally shifted and changed, even when traversing to different parts of the world. In 3 and 4, they just changed suddenly, just with no kind of thought put into them (IMO)

I guess my question is how 'gamey' is it in comparison to the immersiveness of 2. I hope that makes sense in what I'm asking!

Right its like Quest for Fire. HIs first movie ever

I don't think I have seen that one, or at least I can't remember. Now I have to. But talk about a natural fit for a role, lol.

he just released his autobiography where he talks a ton about working on it. Movie was pretty damn popular for a first movie for a dude.

Or more fitting for Primal

I wonder how much of that has to do with the lack of guns.

Some I am sure. On my preview and lets plays a ton of people were bemoaning the lack of caveman weapon porn. Don't get me wrong there are weapon upgrades but its not COD where dudes spontaneously give birth to a series of random weapons and attachements like planned parenthood threw their hands up and just said f*ck it.

Actually its MUCH improved once you get the higher weapons. Still not amazing not close. But not as airy as the earlier weapons at all. The upgrades and then the 2 handed giant femur with meat on it club are epic. The real issue is that it just doesn't have that SNICK when a weapon really hits and sticks and impacts. But its better than I thought it was originally.

I just took down about 30 badguys in a frozen cave with a mix of bashing their fool heads in and my giant tiger and I have to admit I felt a bit like beastmaster lol

That's good to hear man.

I just finished FC4 and i had a blast and i definitely am ready for more FC, but different. Judging from the videos i've seen and your video preview, it does seem like it's worth my money. But i definitely want to see what the reviews are next week. You will have yours up soon too? :)

The game is massive as well, based on the map I have seen. I guess removing multiplayer helped some on cutting the size of the file down.

It is said to be around the same size as FC4, right? And now we don't get to use a gyrocopter or any vehicles. It's only animals, so it's gonna feel even larger. Maybe they found a good way to optimize things? Similar to how Bethesda Game Studios does?

How many GB was FC4? I really hope the game turns out great, but it's sure sounding good judging from what I've heard and read by ACG and IGN.

Similar in size from I am hearing. Game Informer posted a recent video that shows most of the map uncovered and it is indeed huge, with varying locations. Like snow in the north that you have to craft the proper clothes for and such. The game just looks great to me and oozes atmosphere.

Oh shit, that sounds damn cool actually. I LOVE the snow areas in FC4. And having to craft proper clothing is nice, I like that kind of detail. Monday should be nice with the reviews.

Okay, I think I’ve played enough to post my thoughts –

Game has a better set-up than previous Far Crys. I always found the choice for the protagonists to stay in their designated sandbox to be flimsy at best (Jason’s lost his when he rescued his friends and don’t even get me started on Ajay) – Takkar has to establish a foothold for himself and for his people, so I’m not rolling my eyes at my mucking about in the sandbox because it all ultimately goes back to helping his tribe.

Then there’s the village management. I’m a sucker for watching my stronghold grow when it comes to videogames (Suikoden etc) – so this is a good way of getting my invested in the plot. It’s by no means settlement building ala Fallout 4 but watching the village grow with upgrades still fills me with a bit pride. You can increase the number of people in your tribe by undergoing random tasks around the map (think saving Prisoners in Far Cry 4) and if you succeed, they join you. Judging by the village screen, you can recruit a maximum of 300 people (with certain milestones netting you passive perks) – I haven’t yet counted the number of people walking in my village to confirm if 50 people rescued = 50 NPCs walking around.

There are special story-related tribesmen that you have to seek out and do story missions before they join you back at the base whereas they’ll expect you to build them their own huts to unlock their skill trees (of which there are 8)

Which brings me to my next point – resources. You’re going to be farming a lot of resources to do just about anything in this game, from upgrading your trainer’s huts to crafting weapons in the field. Your own tribe will deposit some materials in your stash every day but so far, they’ve given me nothing but low-level trash. I’ve yet to upgrade my bow…what the heck is a south stone?

If there’s a con I have to pin on this game, it’s this…Detective Mode. Ah yes, my old enemy returns. Takkar’s version of Detective Mode, called Hunter Vision, is too indispensable. It highlights the various wildlife that are otherwise difficult to see through the thicket (good luck spotting that bird you need to farm for feathers) and that’s not mentioning the rocks, plants and other resources. If you found an animal whose skin you need, injured it and it runs away, you can use Hunter Vision to track it down by following a trail of blood. Because of this, I’m almost always in Hunter Vision and going through the game in monochrome can get old real fast.

Would you recomend the purchase ?

I have over 20 hours now without using any hud or special vision. Its not needed in any way shape or form if you take your time. Though it will be modded out by someone anyway.

Easily as big. Though with riding you can go a TINY bit faster the verticality and overall lack of pathways means lots of really cool traversal. So ya huge world.

I will say, i find it a bit frustrating to see all the "Far Cry 4.5" talk thrown at this, when this game is leagues different from Far Cry 4, compared to how different FC4 was to FC3. If anything, this should be called Far Cry 4, and that game should have been Far Cry 3.5.

Yeah, I soured on Far Cry 4 quite quickly as it's practically 3 with a slightly different coat of paint, but I love the setting in Primal and think that even if the gameplay hasn't changed much, the completely different world will be enough for me to see the game through to the end.

I think the nice thing is the lessening of certain aspects but not their removal. For example. less than 1/2 the total collectibles, towers are now just like any open world game(basically a base) and that map mess is thinned up a bit. Its more much go here and do this and that, then go there and find a collectible. Then you have the other actual additions and changes.
The one thing people need to understand is that in many ways the tamable animals replace the weapons that the prior games have even with their own specialties and such.

All that being said its called Farcry Primal for a reason.

I'm tempted to make a joke about the reduction of collectables given AssCreed is my guilty pleasure, but they were rather overbearing in 3 and collecting them all was most definitely a chore.

A big problem with this series is the writing, its some of the worst in the industry for me. The lead characters are dicks, that radio dj from the last one put me off driving anywhere. They make astounding gameworlds (this one looks the best yet) and ruin them with juvenile writing and too much busy work.

This is $40USD at the moment on GMG. Definitely tempting at that price. I wonder why the release date says March 1st..?

Ubi wants launch week to be pirate-free, apparently. I don't see many pirates being dissuaded by a seven-day waiting period, though.

That's not true, they slightly delay PC versions because they want to have one more month to work on it and benefit from the submission process on consoles (which takes around 3 weeks). It's just workforce optimization.

It's a one week delay, and the certification processes on consoles don't benefit the PC version in any way whatsoever.

Far Cry Primal has Denuvo. I don't think this has anything to do with pirates.

The certification process for consoles apparently takes 3 weeks. Then there is an additional 1 week delay after console release. This means the team has about 4+ weeks to finish the PC version.

I'm sure you're familiar with the phrase "Better safe than sorry".

I understand the maths. I'm saying that the certification processes on consoles don't benefit the PC version in any way whatsoever.

Edit: Also, console/multiplatform games don't go gold until after they've passed certification on the console side. The launch build needs to be functional to the degree that MS and Sony require.

Yes it does sometimes and the one week is actually a month when you consider console versions need to freeze earlier before launch compared to PC version. The pirating excuse is just bullshit, if they really wanted to avoid pirating, they wouldn't launch on PC before a few more months. More time and ressources to polish/QC is the reason.

I disagree. Far Cry Primal's launch day build would have been approved weeks ago as Ubi wouldn't have begun manufacturing discs that are potentially coasters, and the certification processes exist merely to ensure games adhere to a very specific criteria, such as functional achievements/trophies. I mean, you could argue that certification testers may find and take note of general bugs, but how exactly is that helpful in any meaningful way when publishers have their own QA departments dedicated to bug hunting and can patch the PC version immediately and whenever they wish? In all but a few cases, all PC games are patched before the console versions precisely because publishers have the ability to quickly react if necessary, and there is no better bug tracker than the community of your game.

And it's not a one month delay. You're free to assume that Ubi wouldn't work on the PC version further if it weren't for the console certification processes, but this has no basis, particularly in the case of Ubisoft as it tends to "outsource" its PC versions to specific studios such as Ubi Kiev, and even if it were true, it wouldn't change the fact the game is releasing one week after the console versions. That's what a delay is: a date that is pushed back.

Kinda interested in this now. Impressed by the amount of research they put into it. I wonder if the developers have seen Bone Tomahawk.

Preordered the Xbone version and noticed it's just over 12gb in size while Far Cry 4 was a whooping 28+gb. Does multiplayer seriously take that much more space?

If you have far cry 4 installed it uses most in game assets.

The 12 gb is the language pack.

jk, day one !

Honest question: does anybody care about FC Primal?

It seems like there is very little buzz.
I enjoyed FC3 and 4 and think the setting for Primal is much more interesting then a lot of games but for some reason I just don't care about this game at all.

I think its because they played it safe. Yes its a completly different era but if they never told us that, at first glance we wouldnt know.

Very interested by the game. I currently have too many games to catch up but it'll make a great summer game at 30€. Or even less on PC if I get Pascal early. I think I won't read much on the game, I don't want to have opinion on the game before playing it (will it turn to be a fresh and great Far Cry or simply a mediocre game?).
