I've been listening to the Blueprint for Armageddon podcasts (Hardcore History) lately and I was thinking about how a game set in that period could work.

A lot more to it than just trench warfare.
That was an amazing series. I knew very little about WWI before listening to it, and it was an incredibly interesting and informative listen. Everyone in this thread that seems to think WWI was nothing but trenches would do well to listen to this series and gain a new respect for the role and events of WWI. WWI was the shocking and horrible introduction to industrialized Warfare, and it changed the world forever.

A WWI FPS capmagin done right and covering many aspects of the war would be incredibly intense and it could make for one of the greatest campaigns since COD2. While I doubt this rumor is true, I hope it is because the audio masters at DICE could really do WWI or WWII justice.

WW1 is a horrible setting for a game like battlefield. The war itself is extremely interesting an was probably one of the most horrific, hell on earth, situations of all time. But yeah, a game like battlefield with so many vehicles would not really work with trench warfare, mustard gas, and shelling. It would have to be way more unrealistic than any other time period to be any fun.

I think it would work much better as a first person horror game rather than an action centric first person shooter.

I love how 20 people in this thread say they love the idea and will buy the game, then one person says no one wants this lol people always confusing their opinion with the masses.

as DLC ? sure ...but a full game? i absolutely dont know how i feel about playing that for 50 + hours.

edit: my guess is WW1 will be part of the Season pass. Every Pack will cover a different war! Main game will be present or near future.

I'm also in the camp that they wouldnt do this with how the shooter genre has developed over the last few years.

We've already done WWI and WWII to death. Now everyone's used to "enhanced movement" FPSs and future tech.

I'd applaud them for sticking to their guns if this is true. But i just wouldnt be interested.

We've done WWI to death?

???

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Yeah I'm still not interested in WW1 or 2 stuff again, I'd rather it be set 20 years ago, like the Gulf War or something in the 80's.

I want any era that doesn't have lock-on weapons.

Have we come full circle and WW1/2 shooters will be back in vogue?

I bet they'll make it wacky alternate history like Wolfenstein so they can cram in some cool bullshit weapons.

Skeptical that like this can be pulled off successfully in today's, but I'm intrigued especially if turns out to be true. We've had a glut of modern and near future military shooters and people have been asking for something different for a while.

Where are these WWI shoooters you guys are talking about?

Are you honestly equating WWII with WWI?

Hmmmm on one hand I've been wanting a great WW1 or WW2 FPS with this gen graphics, on the other I really want a single player experience not some WW1 MP game so I don't know if Battlefield is the right series.

Please be true. Please be fucking true. I'm so up to my ears with the modern/futuristic military setting in FPS games. I've yearned to go back to the WW1-2 era in these games.

"Tired of this futuristic bullshit"

2007
"Tired of this ww2 bullshit"

2012
"Tired of this modern warfare bullshit."

2016
"Tired of this futuristic bullshit"

4-6 year bullshit cycle? sounds legit.

but i'm all for diversity in the genre... the futuristic stuff brought diversity in player movement and weaponry... but now in WWI... things should be fairly interesting . Im not sure any company really touched on it (in a memorable way)

Could it be a Bad Company game maybe?

I'm down for a bad company like single player campaign.

If it spans the WW1 in it's entirety it could be interesting. If I'm correct, WW1 only became trench warfare after massive amounts of soldiers were mowed down from machine guns. Dan Carlin has a podcast called Hardcore History that covered WW1.

Some of you saying this can't be because it can't be BF with vehicles, etc.

Umm..

They had airplanes, they had tanks, they had horses, etc.

WWI is the War that brought about many of the early technologies that you got in WWII, so I don't see how it can't be done.

ITT people who don't know shit about WW1 claiming it can't offer a Battlefield experience( what ever the fuck that means anyway, aside from not having choppers).
Since BF3, the Battlefield experience includes having as much gear and knicknacks as possible to fill out the hundreds of hours of arduous progression that DICE thinks these games need for player retention. And microtransactions.

Battlefield is never going to go back in time again because of this.
Unless it's alternate history. Like Codename Eagle. That guy was paraskiing. Codename Eagle might secretly be the best Battlefield. They need to bring back skiis.
Now I'm on the verge of starting to dream myself, and will have to douse myself in some reality. Battlefield 5 will be a serious business 2016+ setting, billions of hours of progression, and another self-serious ho-hum campaign.

I would personally love it if they revisited Vietnam. My absolute favorite war movie/game setting. WW1 would be great as well - I echo the rest that say they are tired of futuristic shooters. I'm even tired of modern day shooters. I want to revisit the past again.

More I think about, might be a cool mix. You've got bolt-actions (already viable in BF), sub machine guns, mounted machine guns, planes (WWI planes were neat, combined with BF4 emblems this would be hilarious... Red Baron, more like watch out for the Homer Simpson), mortars, grenades, tanks, mustard gas, etc.

Best of all, no lock-on bullshit weapons.

Bring on WWI. Dice would make it look epic.

WWI/II doesn't do it for me, not in battlefield anyway. I'd prefer something more contemporary. This has killed my hype for BF5.

Single shot weapons are zzzzzzz

....You realize they used bolt action for the majority of infantry on all sides, on top of that they had mg's, both the heavier variants and later in the war the lighter ones like the Lewis.

A lot of people are exposing an incredible lacking of historical knowledge in this thread.

I'm excited. WWI has been ignored by video games for too long!
