Cuphead New Bosses and Shop Gameplay Revealed

oh fuck off.

If you have something in disagreement to my comment say it. But you are neither clever or witty using my tag to devalue my right to have an opinion.

There's a reason the people making the game quit their jobs to work on this fulltime and its been in development for many years. Doing this sort of animation, let alone for a game, is not easy, it's time consuming, and requires you to be in a decent financial position position to make, and many years to develop, and a very talented artist/animator. Indie Games aren't a hive mind, it's different people in different positions who can only work with what they got. Not all indie developers are artists, many are programmers who can make the game side, but don't have the artistic talent for the art side. The style is beneficial obviously for a project, but indie development isn't like other types of game development where you have funding and a studio to make it. you have usually a small handful of people, sometimes only one or two people, who have to put hours, weeks, years into their project, and have to tackle every aspect of it. And there's no promised return, the indie market is competitive and lacks marketing, and is still finding its way for attention in the mainstream.

While Cuphead looks great, I hardly think the developers intent is, "Yeah, fuck all other indie games, all games should be on our level!," and they're taking huge risks with the project and potential income. It only looks this good because the people behind it have been able to take a risk to go all in, and have spent years on it. If you've done any sort of animation research, you'd know that this type of animation style is notoriously difficult and challenging for animated cartoons, let alone of adding that on top of a video game that's made to be playable and enjoyable. It's the reason we don't even see cartoons with this style much anymore.

Not everyone can fund out of their own pocket the ability to let themselves focus on a project for several years that requires the hard work and talent needed for this type of art style. It's quite a feat, an impressive one, and it's partially impressive due to how hard it is. The developers I think will reap the rewards for being the firsts to make a game like this, and making it look gorgeous at that, but what you're saying basically equating to, "Why can't all indie developers have the ability to support themselves financially for 3-5 years and have talent as animation artists?," which has a very obvious answer. Do you think you could drop all other life things, and fund yourself to be able to do this for years and years, and achieve this animation level? Most can't, and that's the thing about indie games. They're made by a small group of people or even just a person, not a big team, and they mostly have to fund it all and take care of everything themselves.

It's a literal case where if you're bothered by it, then go make your own game and make the magic happen. Since that's literally what indie development is, and if you don't think you could manage to do it, then why call out others for not being able to do what you couldn't do?

Cannot wait. I really hope we get a release in the next 6 months or so. The art style and animation is beautiful and I love a good boss rush.

My god this game is gorgeous. I can't think of a more visually appealing game this gen... And it boils down to art direction. Interestingly Ori is my runner up. And NMS takes 3rd. Indies are killing it with the the art.

I fully appreciate what you are saying here. However, as a consumer none of that is my problem.

This is an enthusiast forum, so if may seem a bit out of keeping to not really be bothered about the making of a game or the sacrifices the developer has to go through but It is what it is.

I see a game like Cuphead and I want to buy it. It screams quailty to me and I will reward the developers on release, even though its on a platform that I barely buy any content for.

Pixel art indie shooters/ platformer look like shit to me. I have no interest in them and wish that more developers would aspire to creating something visually impressive like cuphead. Of course the devs arent trying to show anyone up, but that doesn't change the fact that clearly they are.

I understand that for many that is not feasible and that is totally fine, but im not going to figuratively pat them on the back, say "there there, at least you tried" and buy their game anyway. Nope. It looks shit. I dont want it.

Thats all im getting at. If Cuphead is as successful as it deserves to be, then maybe indies that can afford to play with artsyles will feel emboldened to do so, rather than just follow the eaiser route of emulating a "retro" artstyle with pixel art. Thats all I meant when I said take note.

graphics aren't everything. If that's all you care about then you are missing out on a lot of good games. You're saying cuphead deserves to be successful based on its looks alone. since the game is not out yet and nobody has any idea if it's going to be a good game

Nobody said graphics are everything. We arent even talking about graphics anyway. If the basic presentation of a game is not to my liking, I have a hard time sticking around long enough to fall in love with the mechanics.

And yes you are right, I havent played the game yet to know if it is good or not. But based on the presentation, im willing to give the developers the benefit of the doubt. And yes, making something that looks that good deserves success in its own right. If the game itself is bad, they can always iterate the gameplay in a sequel.

also this "missing out on a lot of good games" defence in regards to certain indies is silly. There are more games released each year than I can play in my natural lifetime. I dont get an award for playing every "good" game out there. There is enough on the market that I can pick and choose what to play and still not have enough time to fit them all in. Missing a few games because I dont like the artstyle does not create any kind of void in my gameplaying time. Instead I will be playing good games that I do like the artsyle of, so how am I missing out on anything?

Yeah, none of the boss health values are anywhere near final yet. The slime in particular needs to be tightened up a bit.

It's a bit of a weird balance, because if the players never use their EX moves or Supers, the health bars are going to seem a bit too long.

Use them Supers!

I can imagine how it is. Keep up the good work. Game looking tight!

Just asking not dog piling: Would you say a game like, say, Shovel Knight looks like shit?

I'm a bit sad this is XB1 and W10 only.

It would sell so much more if it were also on Steam and PS4.

I know someone else already stated that Cuphead is going to be on Steam (which is true), I also need to mention that it's going to work on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 as a standard game, as well as have a UWP version on the W10 store.

So everyone can get it in the format they like.

Shovel knight is a tricky one. While I dont like the pixel art, I feel that there is a clear jump in quality in that game over many indies.

Also I feel the way its designed, pixel art works way better for it than other games.

Personally I still have no interest in playing it, but I wont say it looks like shit.

You should, it's so great.

I'm not sure who you are but as it seems you're working on this, I just want to say I haven't been as blown away with the visuals of a game as I have with Cuphead since I first saw Super Mario 64 when I was 14. And the gameplay seems right up my alley.

Truly amazing work.

Oh, ok. Great to see more of the game! Love how everything is just cracked enough that I'm always surprised at what actually happens.

So I don't know if I'd want to play this but I'd love to watch some one else play it (who is better at these things than I am). I just get the feeling I wouldn't get far and would get frustrated.

This game was a gem since I saw the first 2 seconds of it.

I'm glad it's turning out to be looking so good and people seem really hyped about it. Good times guaranteed once this game comes out.
