Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

It can be many reasons. Maybe they don't have game demos ready? Maybe they want to show and reveal everything at once (games, system, etc.). Maybe it's all not ready. Maybe they just don't want to compete with media attention against MS and Sony because they get less attention compared to those two?

I don't see how any of those makes any sense. Nintendo pulled the internal dev teams to work on the NX game for awhile (hence the current WiiU software drought). With less than a year between now and launch window, all the launch titles should be at the end of alpha if not the beta built already. If those games are so incomplete that they can't be demo to the public at this point, then it is unlikely that they will be a complete game by March.

Also, nothing gets more spotlight at E3 than a reveal of a new game console. Even Sony shows the PS4K, it won't generate more buzz than a new Nintendo console.

Nintendo managed to have their worst E3 ever before the event even began. That takes talent.

I'm terrified for NX if this is the state that their marketing is in now. Unless this is building up to something big, marketing alone will prevent NX from succeeding no matter what it is.

Between this and the lack of leaks though, I'm starting to think that NX will just have zero western focus and support (outside of indies) anyway. Not even token support. And yes, I know that this is jumping to conclusions, but effectively skipping the biggest western media even of the year is not something a company with any interest in the western market at all does unless they're so big that they don't need it. Nintendo isn't that big, and they just gt smaller.

The NX won't have the same kind of 3rd party support regardless of anything. You could have kimishima personally giving blowjobs to every western exec and millions of dollars per port and it still wouldn't happen

But you're jumping to conclusions here, like lots of folks. NX will damn well certainly be at E3, behind closed doors, and will be discussed with developers in that format. It will not hit the public eye.

At first I thought, "Wow, this is a terrible move. Digital Events are great..."

Then I thought about last year's total disaster and now I'm neutral about it. Last year's was a straight kick to the groin. "Hey look, HD Animal Crossing!!! Oh wait, IT'S A BOARD GAME!"

That's about the line of thinking I imagine Nintendo is on. They likely could put a Direct out there for E3, and could find some games to showcase, but I'm guessing the lineup is only good enough to attain about the response it got last year. Being upfront about the Zelda focus early is going to earn them deserved backlash, but by the time E3 itself rolls around I'm sure they're hoping to show some cool Zelda stuff and build some positive buzz, as opposed to having a Direct, showing very little major stuff, and having last year's reaction.

They're definitively playing the long game, the real deciding factor is what the payoff is going to be for all this.

Last year people were pissed they wasted their time with Animal Crossing Amiibo, Federation Force and Mario Tennis. Now you guys want to have your time wasted even more?

I don't get what the problem is since it's not like there's gonna be nothing in over a year since we'll get an NX reveal a few months from E3

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Perfectly fine with that. And since I'll be going on a zelda media blackout, that means no nintendo e3 for me this year. Let's see what the other vendors have in store.

What is the soonest Nintendo would realistically reveal NX and its launch lineup if it's releasing in March? I assume they wouldn't show it before the holidays and Jan/Feb is literally 1 or 2 months before the launch.

If they really do plan on sticking to that March 2017 release date, I wouldn't expect the big reveal to be any later than September. That gives a nice window for them between announcement and release.

Even if that was true, alienating their fanbase, which is they only thing they can rely on right now, is not a good way to keep their business afloat.

I was being sarcastic, because no other public company would ever make the decisions that Nintendo appears to be making.

I would assume January, if they don't want to cannibalize whatever sales they might get from the Wii U (which you would have to think is minimal at this point).

Nintendo should host their own event, with a Super Smash Bros tournament (melee and 4), to announce the NX and showcase their upcoming titles. A good example is Blizzcon.

I am a surprised that people did not see this coming and even more so that some are upset about this recent news. E3 has been one long running joke for the last decade and Nintendo can honestly do better.

That's exactly the problem. The problem is that we're going to be going two solid years with just a very small handful of games. It's not really the fact that we don't get to see an E3 Direct. It's what that means. The absence of an E3 Direct means they don't have any games.

I'm not just talking about worse than Sony. I'm talking zero western AAA games. Absolute zero. Worse than Wii U.

The whole thing is totally crazy. If the NX needs more time in the oven, I'm fine with that, but to go total blackout on it, and focus *only* on one game that won't be coming out until sometime next year, which will likely also have a superior version, just doesn't make sense. Even having a short 5-10 minute video where they just talk about their vision for the future would be a much bigger vote of confidence that Nintendo has a plan of attack for the next 9 months. Right now? I honestly have no idea where they're at.

Also, as a big Zelda fan, I frankly don't want to know a ton about it. I just want to play it.

That Zelda game better have that mind blowing stuff that rumors talked about (FemLink, voice acting) plus free Midna blowup dolls, because anything less is embarrassing. Seriously one game, all of E3?

I love Zelda and I love it a lot but this is just... baffling. Not even a tiny direct for the stuff coming out soon after E3? Sun and Moon?

Nintendo's the main reason I get so excited about E3, and this year isn't any different. It remains to be seen whether this year's E3 will be better than the last... I hope for their sakes that Zelda U/NX is a gamechanger.

Why are they even spending money on E3 this year?

The most reasonable theory is that they were planning to show NX at this E3 (that would explain the big space rented now just for Zelda) and something went terribly wrong and made them cancel the reveal.

Other (fan) theory is that this is a genius move by Nintendo in an attempt to get rid of E3 by still paying a lot of money for nothing and that they actually want to drop the show that brought them the highest audiences for their streams with NWC, SSB Champ and Treehouse.

Except most companies aren't pulling out of E3.

Yeah, people keep saying that (what you quoted) in Nintendo threads as if saying it enough times will make it true. If anything, Bethesda have their own conference now, adding another player to the e3 game. Last year's e3 was a huge deal across media thanks to sony's "year of dreams" thing. I don't see e3 going away.

You know the really sad thing? They could still have a somewhat decent presence at E3 without even trying. Just focus on their eShop/Virtual Console.

I bet a lot of people here would be ecstatic over Mother 3 on Wii U and Pokemon Gold and Silver on the 3DS (following on from Red and Blue in February).

What about Gamecube on the Wii U vc? Or christ, even a couple more HD remasters people have been crying out for? Mario Sunshine and F-Zero GX?

If they outright said in the PR in the OP that it would be an event that focuses on Zelda, Sun and Moon and the above eShop releases, there would've been a somewhat pleased reaction, maybe even excited by some (I would have been).

But whatever, at this point, I'm kinda done with this company. There's only so many times you can be an apologist for them without starting to feel like an idiot.

You know, maybe it's because I love the Zelda series or because I am extremely excited for this game, but when I saw the thread title I was very excited. Then I read the comments and became very, very surprised at the reactions.

The fact that they're spending 100% of their time and energy on Zelda is very bold. If the game doesn't impress, then it'll be a very, very bad look for them. They must have a LOT of faith in the Zelda game to treat it this way, and hopefully this is all indicative of something big or amazing that they're hiding.

But I honestly can't see any reason to be angry. It's not like Nintendo stopped making games or doesn't have any games ready, in fact, we know of several games they're going to release for Wii U and 3DS. They're going to show them off at a later date, instead of having them drowned out by everything else at E3.

By only showing Zelda, it guarantees that everyone will be taking about it, whether it's good or bad.

E3 2014 was an anomaly, confirmed. It'll likely be Nintendo's last great E3. Remember it.

I'd be down for Nintendo to drop the expo almost entirely if they're willing to do their own events in a big way.

If nintendo does not show it running on NX hardware ( no need for nx reveal ) then thats cool.

Blow peoples mind, huge surprise and get people hyped for the console reveal later this year.

If they dont then they are downright fucking mindless showing a wii u game this late in the game. Regardless of how impressive of a zelda title it is, it wont be impressive against ps4/xbox1 titles. Zelda needs to triamph or this nintendo e3 will hurt them. Badly.

The ad being displayed as I read the thread "Doom, 20% off"

Perfect. I wish I was on my laptop so I could take a screenshot, but I'm using my Wii U gamepad right now

People will see female Link and voice acted NPC's in Zelda and will lose their minds and this shit will be the most talked about thing at E3, trust me. Neogaf will be full of Zelda gifs and screen grabs, slowing each and every web browser to a crawl, all gawking at the visuals. Gamers are fickle, everyone will lose their shit, and yeah I see you, the guy in the corner with his arms folded muttering "I don't even like Zelda" to himself, you'll be hyped too.

I think you are missing the point here. I don't think anyone says Zelda will be bad or people don't like Zelda, we just want to see other games except 1. As good as Zelda will be it cannot make up for all the other game which will be missing. People want to see Zelda they just don't want to see ONLY Zelda.

Then the third theory is that they have to pay to keep their booth space for next years event, even though they are supposedly phasing out their E3 presence.

In other words we have no idea what their reasoning is and likely never will.

Having one game being shown at Treehouse does little to show confidence as a company.
The fact they can't even talk about future of NX to get people excited and talking is such a dumb move.

Why is anyone surprised by this? They literally said that they would only bring Zelda to E3. Y'all can't hear that, decide internally that it's impossible for them not to show Pokemon or some other games, then get upset and call Nintendoom when they do exactly as they said they were going to do.

The E3 is not a good format for Nintendo's interests. You get praise for showing a FMV of a game but pure and honest gameplay is received with disdain.

They are probably moving towards a Nintendo-only fair with their own tournaments and showcasings.

To ensure attendees are able to truly experience the freedom and exploration the game offers, The Legend Of Zelda for Wii U will be Nintendo's focus of the show this year

Oh do fuck off Nintendo :D

Translation: we have nothing, absolutely nothing. We'd like to show the NX but don't want to be embarrassed by Sony & Microsoft. In the meantime here's another Zelda game. We know its irrelevant in this day and age of GTA and COD but we're fucking desperate here.

Makes more sense for them to have their own event like Spaceworld where the focus will be completely on their products. I think that would be more impactful than any E3 showing.

Why do they need to pay if they want to phase out of E3? Just drop it and be done. It makes no sense.
