2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hey, all. I'm looking for a new laptop primarily for artistic/graphic design purposes.

Country: United States
Budget: Would strongly prefer to keep it under ~$1200, but I'd be willing to go up to $1500 if there were a very compelling reason to do so.
Size: 15" is ideal, but 13" or 17" is fine. Don't care as much about weight, but lighter is better
Use: Graphic design, running the adobe suite smoothly. Need at least 1080p. IPS screen preferred. Don't do much PC gaming, but it'd be swell if it could run Dragon's Dogma well (though I don't think this is a lofty goal lol)
Misc: Back-lit keyboards are great.

EDIT:

Dunno if it helps, but here are a few of the laptops I've been looking at:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y700
Lenovo Z70
ASUS ZenBook UX303UB
ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501JW

Of these, I'm leaning towards the ZenBook Pro
Sigh, it has some pretty bad color inaccuracy, apparently

Hey all, bit of advice. Possibly the wrong topic as I'm looking for a laptop for a friend and they don't want a gaming one, but whilst I can build a PC with my eyes closed laptop specs are a bit off for me (that performance per £ kills me).

Anyway, they're looking for a laptop no more than £350 at the absolute max - preferably around £300 or £320, and it needs to be from Very.

I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 for £330 or the Lenovo ideapad 305 for £300, but I wouldn't mind someone weighing in. The Lenovo puts me off by not having what i3 it has, but the Inspiron has a 5015U.

Use is storing photos, light web browsing, downloading files - no 3D gaming. I've already suggested a tablet etc., but they want a laptop that is "quick".

Thanks a ton for this! I think I'm going to go with the dell.

I know the base macbooks (which are still incredibly expensive) aren't made for gaming. But I almost just bought one for the form factor and the stereotype that Apple puts more reliable parts in their laptops. I'm not going to be buying another laptop for aroud five years. So I was almost willing to toss the gaming capabilities out the window for a well built machine that won't crap out on me in a year.

I'm not an expery by any means. Would the dell you linked to (the i5/gtx960m) be able to play pretty much any game at 30fps at the native screen resolution? It doesn't matter to me if I have to drop all the other settings to low

GTX 960M is a GTX 750 Ti minus 10-15% of juice.

Still looking for a laptop for a hospital stay.

I need one capable of playing games like Stellaris, EU4, Civ, Battlefleet Gothic etc.

Don't really want to spend more than £500, do I need dedicated graphics for games like those?

I thought you picked up the one I recommended last time. Wha happen?

Sorry for late answer. I just checked at notebookcheck and their displays all seem bad to terrible. I guess better than the old Lenovo that is doing the job now but still not acceptable. I know if you want to get serious with color ranges you should not look at (cheaper) laptops at all, but that's the only option for that person.

The Acer Nitro has a pretty good display.

OK, so I tested it and when put under heavy load my laptop's temp rises to and hovers between 74-76C.

That's really good. Forget the cooling pad.

I just got a new laptop!

17.3 1080p screen
6th Generation Intel Skylake i7-6700HQ (3.5 GHz)
GTX 980M 8GB GDDR5
32GB DDR4 2133 MHz of RAM
250GB SSD
1TB HDD

Couldn't hold out for Pascal? We're so close.

Acer Nitro V15 has a good IPS display. Dettailed screen specs in this review.

They're basically the same laptop. I flipped a coin and it chose the Dell.

Looks like this is going to be the choice for that person as well, thanks!

Naming with notebooks is so confusing... (VN7-592G-71ZL)
Does that mean the VN7-592G is the series I should be looking for?

edit: looks like the VN7-571G has the same panel, if I want to go cheaper!

There's a very good chance this'll be the laptop I pull the trigger on. Newegg has the same model, but it comes with an SSD and 16gb of RAM. Think I'll grab that one. Thanks, man!

I just thought I would say that I recently bought this laptop (the one with SSD and 16 GB RAM) and I am very pleased with it. It is super fast, has decent gaming performance and the display is gorgeous.

FYI but Newegg seems to have a deal on that Acer today

Using coupon EMCETGM59 saves $20 and brings the price down to $699 which is pretty good. This version only has the 2GB 960m though if that matters.

You can get the skylake version with the 4GB 960m for $910 it looks like

They all have the same display, the individual SKUs are just differing configurations of RAM, SSD/HDD combos.

That's great to hear. By any chance do you know if the OS comes installed on the SSD?

I ended up going for one I mentioned in my previous post, but thanks for the heads up!

Yes the OS is installed on the SSD making the boot time amazingly fast. Also regular applications are set to be installed on the SSD.

Awesome, can't wait to get this thing. One more question: do you use a cooling pad or anything like that? I've heard this laptop can run pretty hot, especially when gaming.

Yeah it can get pretty hot when gaming and I am thinking about getting a cooling pad.

Most of the time it is in the 70s and 80s. Occasionally it may spike as high as 91C for a second, though.

I wouldn't worry at all, in that case. Don't blink unless you see 95C and higher. All mobile CPU/GPU parts are rated to be safe until well over 100C.

Another Chinese leak, take with a huge grain of salt, as always:

1080m looks pretty promising if that leak pans out then.

Wonder if it could be on par or a little better power consumption wise as well than the 980 used in laptops

1080M is 100W, the 980 was between 120W and 160W depending on the laptop.

1080M is 100W, the 980 was between 120W and 160W depending on the laptop.

That's pretty exciting then. ~20%-40% less power consumption with more processing power

Wonder if that means thinner laptops than 980 mobile laptops as a GPU with lower power needs is generally cooler as well

K.Jack

Knowledge is power, guard it well
The 1070M will certainly find its way into thin machines, like the MSI GS line.

1080M will come in the same laptops as the GTX 980M, as that was also 100W.

I also expect Nvidia to again bring its full 1080 desktop chip to the 980 Mobile laptops, but not until Q4 or next year.

If that rumour is true, the jump from 980M to 1080M is pretty massive.
Well, everything is, really, except for the 1060M which clearly got shortchanged by the 1065M.

MXM keeping up the good fight.

So is there going to be a MXM 1080M?

What about thunderbolt? Won't we also have the option to connect a desktop card using thunderbolt?

hi mate, sorry hadn't bought it couldn't find original post! Can you remember what one it was you recommended? I've found this but unsure if good value or not. Still unsure I need a card like a 940 for the games i want to play on it? Comes in at £549

ANyway I now have a date for op on 6th June so have a deadline now. Hopefully I wont be out of action too much post op and can recover quickly for some hospital bed gaming!

I've got another question for you guys:

Okay, so I bought the $1150 model of the Acer Aspire V15 K.Jack recommended above. I'm satisfied with the price, and the laptop itself sounds great. It'll be arriving on Wednesday.

However, I'm now wondering if I should just return it and wait 2 months for the back-to-school sales? It completely slipped my mind that I could probably get a better price if I just held off until July or August to make the purchase. In your guys' opinion, are back-to-school sales/discounts usually strong enough to justify the wait in this case?

Discounts of fewer than ~$200 probably wouldn't faze me (especially since I saved around $100 on tax by ordering from Newegg), but if there's a possibility of grabbing the same laptop at a $300+ discount just by tucking away my money until July, then I might feel compelled to wait.

EDIT: Also, I technically don't need the laptop right away. I bought it primarily for graphic design classes, which won't start until mid-August. That said, I'd enjoy gaming on it throughout the Summer, and, as mentioned prior, I'm not unsatisfied with the price.

Thanks.

I was THIS CLOSE to dropping some dosh on a 970M machine like a P640RE or the Aorus but now I'm waiting for some Pascal baby!

Hey,

My laptop is overheating, both the CPU and the GPU reach high temps while in use. The GPU gets to 101°C before hitting temp treshold and downcloking while CPU gets to ~92°C before hitting temp treshold and downclocking aswell... I already cleaned it and changed the thermal paste, but nothing has changed. I even bought a cooling pad and even that did nothing. Anybody can help me ?

My laptop is a Clevo P170SM with an i7 4800MQ and a HD8970M.

Stay strong brother, our salvation is nigh.

MXM keeping up the good fight.

The x60M card always gets jobbed, but I understand why. At least a 75% jump over the 960M would still be a huge gain for the mainstream budgeted gamer.

It's looking like MXM is sticking around, yes. Whether it's still the current MXM 3.1 will be the big thing.

Hey guys whats the cheapest gaming laptop that can run Dota 2 very well with no slow down, etc

How much you can actually spend matters most. Can you afford this?

What about thunderbolt? Won't we also have the option to connect a desktop card using thunderbolt?

Hypothetically, sure.

Might as well hold out for mobile Pascal, then. The 1060M is looking like a huge leap in power, if the Chinese power hierarchy is true. 75% boost is dang near like having a second 960M.

Looking like a smart move.

Did you also remove the heatsinks and clean between their vents thoroughly? Did you remove and clean the fans as well? And I'm not talking about spraying compressed air, I mean a real cleaning.

Damn. It's gonna be hard to return that laptop, but if the difference in power is potentially that great, I'd definitely regret not at least waiting to see my options. And hell, I can use this opportunity to save up a few hundred bucks extra and put them toward an even better machine.

Are Pascal laptops definitely launching within the next 2-3 months?

With Pascal due to launch in June, I'd say it'll be July before we start seeing wide availability.

Hi all! So I just got an HP Omen with a 960M and so far it's better than I expected.

What concerns me is temperatures.I live in a very warm and humid place. Temperatures for my graphic card reach up to 94º, with processors (very rarely) functioning up to 80º.

I have a basic Belkin cooler with just 1 fan and it helps just a little to keep the GTX around 85-90º and the processors at 61-70º.

Should I worry? Should I get a better cooler?

I'm curious - why is this priced so much lower than the XPS 15, when the specs are so similar?

Also, could this Inspiron max something like StarCraft II while holding a steady 60fps?

I asked the same thing after both of these laptops were recommended to me on Reddit. Based on what I could find, it's due to the XPS being Dell's "premium" line and thus having superior build quality, screen, audio, etc.

Is there a significant power difference between the 4750HQ and the 4710HQ? I have the latter in my G751 currently but it is being upgraded to have a GSYNC "module" attached and they don't expect boards with the 4710 to arrive for another two months, if that. They're offering a board with the 4750 at the same price I'll be paying for the 4710 board upgrade, but it'll be done within a week or so. The most intensive stuff I do is play games and compile code ( a difference of a few frames in games is not a big deal).

CPUBoss details can only get me so far and notebookcheck doesn't have a proper comparison. The 4750 scores higher in some tests because of the Iris Pro but I won't be using that, single core and multi core performance is what I'm really looking at.

The XPS line is more of like their premium lineup, so that comes with a higher price. The screen is much much better as well, is much more lighter in weight and its also better equipped in some places if I'm not mistakened (ddr 4, faster ssd, thunderbolt 3 for possible external gpu support?)

i7-4750HQ: 2.0GHz base clock, 3.2GHz turbo.
i7-4710HQ: 2.5GHz base clock, 3.5GHz turbo.
Both are Haswell, so the only significant difference is the graphics and the clock speed. It's up to you whether you're willing to sacrifice 300 MHz (8.6% of CPU speed) to get GSync sooner or later.

Edit: I'm an emulator user so for me clock speed is a big deal. It might not be a big deal for you, unless you were actively timing things or compiling giant programs. I haven't used GSync but I imagine that would be a much more significant upgrade.

If they're the same price, what is there to talk about here? Take the faster processor.

Are your fans still fully functional and free of gunk?

High temps always have a reason.

Those temps seem normal. Meaning that they aren't going to damage anything.

Not when you can get this, with an i5-6300HQ quad core, GTX 950M, IPS display, for £645.00 inc VAT.

What does that mean for us?

Hopefully, we didn't wait for nothing.

It affects us a bit differently.

In this first generation, my bet is that our GTX 1080M will be base on the desktop GTX 1070, so the mobile chip will be significantly faster than the desktop GTX 980, no small feat. That also matches up with my Chinese rumor in post #4827. That would make it 2x the performance of the GTX 980M, so I can't say it wasn't worth the waiting you've done.

I have always been planning to sit on my GTX 980M until the second generation Pascal in 2017, but anyone who has been on the fence with no laptop or a weaker card should not hesitate to jump in this year. Even the 1070M is worth buying, judging by the leak.

People looking for low-end machines should be even happier, if the 1040M really ends up faster than the GTX 960M.

It's definitely not the HUGE leap in performance which was expected. I honestly don't know what the hell went wrong. The 2x performance per watt didn't pan out at all.
