New York won't win the number 1 spot, but upstate especially has it's moments.

It is funny to talk to people who have never been to NY or know the state well because they think the entire state is NYC. Then again a lot of people in NYC think that way as well ;D

We're guilty of it on The Island too. I went to collage in New Platz, the fastest way to piss off the locals was to say they where from upstate. That or the few times I slipped and said I was going back to New York on vacations. =P

Nobody in this thread has said Michigan, but if you talk to Michiganders they will absolutely say it is the most beautiful.

They are wrong, though, every single one of them.

I'm a Michigander and was considering posting some things like the pictured rocks or Manitou island or something but ultimately decided I have no idea if it's 'most beautiful'.

Also this post must mean you're an Ohioan. It's nice to know we're still first in your thoughts!

Took a first visit there two years ago. THE DUNES 0_0!

Wnat a beautiful drive that was. Going through upper WI, to upper MI, and heading over to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. What a drive.

I prefer Silver Lake dunes. I have some land nearby it. And have an old 80's Ford Bronco that tears the dunes up.

Gotta be Montana or Idaho. My girlfriend was in Idaho for staff training and she snapped a shitty picture of the view from her porch and it still managed to be beautiful.

You can make ANY landscape look gorgeous if you're a good enough photographer but it takes a special kind of beauty to manage to look amazing through a hastily shot low res photo from a cell phone.

Gonna say it's somewhere out west. I visited southeastern California last fall and it was an incredible trip for a midwesterner like myself.

In defense of Illinois, though, it does have some beauty of its own.

West Virginians talk like all we see is this...

...but its more like this.

West Virginians are so insular they honestly think we're the best place to live and the prettiest place around.
My vote goes to Montana.

Yea...you only see stuff like that bottom picture in WV. I lived in WV my whole life and I've never met one person who claimed that it is the best place to live. I've met a lot of WVians who run down the state every chance they get though.

I am going to rep my home state Maine a little bit. The coast line is phenomenal.

It also has the end of the Appalachian Trail with Mt. Katahdin.

That second to last picture looks like South branch pond in baxter state park. We just booked a campsite there a few days ago for the summer. I lived in maine for years but never really explored it till I left and started coming back for vacations only.

It's New Mexico. I'm on my phone so I cant link a bunch of pics (Google white sands) but they don't call it the land of enchantment for nothing.

Lol at all the heavily color corrected photos in this thread.

Well lets be honest with ourselves, while some of these photos have some things done to them, these places are still incredibly beautiful in person. They are well photographed for a reason after all.

There's some pretty cool landscapes along the Colorado River that border Arizona and California, but I'm not sure which state that would be haha.

Drive boat up river, turn off boat, float down gorge while drinking beer.

Also one thing I don't think people realize about Hawaii is that there are a couple places where it gets snow. You can even go snow boarding if you really wanted to though I don't know how good the conditions are for it. These places are the top of several old dormant volcanoes and there are actually several observatories up there because there their is little to no light pollution.

South Carolina does have its upsides...

I have to say there are prettier states on the whole, like Montana. But there's something to be said for SC's variety. From the mountainous northwest, to the forests, to the rural plains, to the marshes, and finally to the beaches on the east.

I feel like Alaska and Hawaii are top tier. I'm a big fan of the Pacific Northwest, though, and the redwoods of California. I just want to get in a van and take a road trip from LA up through the state and to Seattle or somewhere and stay only at little Inns and towns along the way.

Also love woody New England in the fall.

Just wanted to pop in to state I've never heard "natural beauty" used outside of the context of landscapes.

I think you could argue for many places having idyllic looking beautiful areas. California still wins every time though, and it's because it has all of these things. Like, every kind of major naturally beautiful ecosystem there is exists in CA. Oh you want forests? got em. You want rolling hills, got em, you want snowy mountains, got em, you want beautiful beaches and coves, got em, you want craggy oceansides, got em, you want plains, got em. Heck, you want desert? got some.

That's just unbeatable. I'm like less than 2 hours away from both the ocean and the mountains. The foothills and forests are close enough to visit anytime, and the plains are all around. That's pretty nuts.

This.

And this

Are both only a day trip away. C'mon.

If you ever did that, I would highly recommend taking a day or two to head inland and see Yosemite. It's pretty mind blowing.

Maybe not number 1, but the skies in New Mexico are absolutely unreal. Trips up to Santa Fe often look like painted scenery. As a former Socal resident, the sky is what blows my mind constantly out here.

Olympic Peninsula alone beats most states by itself. WA is the most beautiful place I've ever seen in my life.

My shitty phone picture doesn't do it justice, but here's Lake 22 from a couple of weeks ago.

It's alaska, hawaii, or a western state (but also peeking into Minnesota and Wisconsin as upper-midwestern states).

3 some between Washington, Montana and Colorado. Alaska is also gorgeous.

For some reason I used to think Montana was just red plains. Dont know what state I was thinking of.

I love the geographical diversity of the US.

This thread gave me wanderlust, wow.

Living in the south, I miss fall colors. From the pictures posted, I'd say:

  • California is probably the best for variety
  • Hawaii and Alaska are unique and amazing
  • I didn't know Wisconsin was so pretty
  • For a general area, I want to visit the Pacific northwest. Oregon + Washington + Montana really appeal to me.
