Off to see Blind Guardian at Rock City tonight... looking forward to it, but a little worried since I don't always do well in crowds.

As long as the music's good!

Stay to the sides and you'll be fine, depending on which room you're in I seem to remember you can stand on a mezzanine type thing, I saw Turisas there ages ago and stood there it was stage left iirc.

Edit: enjoy the gig too!

Protio: drink water

Hansi likes to really draw out the singalongs towards the end after you sang along to the songs you actually liked (Fly is fucking awesome but it killed my voice)

Is grave digger the intro band again? Be sure to sing along for them as well.

Epicardiectomy cancels US appearances

What have I done to deserve this cruel and unjust punishment

At least there's MDF

But even with MDF, Infernal Revulsion dropped. I was pumped to see them again too.

At least Mitochondrion made it in this time, actually off right now to see them tonight.

I'm not the biggest IR fan but they were definitely the standout of the brutal death bands. I'm still frustrated that jungle rot gets the Thursday slot and wormed is sent out to die at Edison but whatever....

Playing with fire here but I'm surprised how smoothly things have gone this year lineup wise. Not many drops, no real overlaps besides shit I've seen (missing disgorge and dehumanized for goblin and dopethrone)

Damn, had no idea they were playing here. Couldn't have gone because of work anyways :(

How was it?

I know it's not necessarily new, but goddamn has this song been on repeat like crazy for me.

Opeth - Bleak

Not necessarily, since it was released 15 years ago. Holy shit time flies fast.

I miss Opeth's death metal output a lot. The last two albums have been huge disappointments, but I guess Åkerfeldt ran out of ideas for a new one. This is actually quite apparent on Watershed, which to me was a forgettable experience due to the material being such middle of the road and unoriginal for the band. I even had to go and check what the album's name was and I bought the album's CE at launch.

I really enjoyed Watershed actually. Also, I think it comes down to the fact he can't really growl very well anymore. Doesn't sound right and it hurts his throat now. Honestly, I could never finish listening to Heritage.

I've been blasting the shit out of some death metal lately. I found Wolfheart on YouTube. One of their videos came up and sucked me right in. Gruesome released their EP so I jammed that and their release from last year. Revulsed, Necronomicon, Ares Kingdom.

Been meaning to mention this trilogy too. Some sort of space themed blackened death metal deal from a band called Sxuperion. The trilogy idea caught my attention. I haven't been able to get enough time to digest all three albums in a row but the first and third are awesome on their own. Only listened to Eon once because its ambient.

Finally had some time to digest the new Katatonia. It's really damn good. It's definitely not as easy to get into as some of their last few. Once I got over the hurdle though, I'm really loving it.

I've only listened to it once so far, and it's slightly more challenging and interesting than their Kings/Dethroned. They're trying new things with arrangements while maintaining the Kings/Dethroned composition and tone. It seems like there's a hint of Last Fair Deal era nostalgia, most obviously in Serac (there's a riff in the second half of that song that almost calls out Dispossession).

You know, I've heard people say that about the Last Fair Deal call backs but I'm not sure I hear it. I love LFDGD too. It's one of my favorite Katatonia albums. Either way, the more I listen to this new one, the more I like it. Some of the melodies really stick with you.

I've been listening to a lot of Katatonia lately. Not just the new album, but some of their others and live stuff. Overall I like the new one, but I'm not sure it's hit me quite yet. That's alright, though, as their stuff seems to take a bit to click. I was really disappointed in Dead End Kings and then went back to it later and thought it was quite excellent.

The songwriting on the new one does seem very different, though. A lot less tightly crafted, I think, which is interesting. Also I do hear a bit of the LFDGD in there. Only a bit.

I have never listened to Katatonia until I started reading about this new album. I am really digging their stuff. Discouraged Ones is probably my favorite album I have listen to so far.

Love this song

I have listened to about half of the new album. I like it so far. The sound is fascinating, I kinda have trouble putting my finger on exactly how to describe it.

It is a grower. I'm just glad it turned out as well as it did, all things considered. It's a statement album, I don't think Katatonia is going away for a long time if this last shake up didn't affect their quality.

Yep, Discouraged Ones is awesome, that and Brave Murder Day are my favorite albums.

The newest one has a few decent songs, but something still bothers me about their recent output.

Their recent output is what a great band is only capable of after decades of work.

Brave Murder Day was when they were waffling between being a fairly rote black metal band who didn't even have their own instruments and playing at being a gothic rock band like Fields of the Nephilim. They had potential, but they weren't close to being a great band at that point, much less even a functioning band at all.

Discouraged Ones was a step forward, but I can't even listen to it anymore. Even Tonight's Decision is pushing it. Some of those songs are cool live, though.

They figured things out for the most part around Last Fair Deal, but it was Viva Emptiness that they made their first real studio album and could write the kind of songs that they were capable of. The Fall of Hearts is years of work and refinement from that point.

Has anyone picked up the new Destruction album, musically it's ok but it has some of the worst lyrics I've heard in years, it's like his got a teenager to write them?!

To each their own of course. I also tend to give them a bit more credit than simply being a young band aping the style(s) of those who came before. They started writing with more "current" influences on Viva Emptiness, namely Tool. Which is a big part of the reason I'm not particularly fond of their material from that point forward. They've transformed and grown certainly! For you, into a swan...for me, into a muscovy :p I think it's safe to say you and I desire different things from the music we listen to, hah. It's all good :)

Of course, personal taste will always take precedence to a more objective critique. Maybe I'm not directing this at you specifically, it's just that Brave Murder Day reverence I think is a disservice. The early albums are more quaint than masterful, which I think their output over the past decade or more have been. Their discography illustrates how a great band evolves over the years more so than many metal bands, and deserves discussion whenever the opportunity arises.

Well, I had a long and nuanced post typed up but ... the short of it is, I'm probably not the ideal candidate to discuss the evolution of bands/artists in the manner you desire and don't want to clog the thread with stuff the other posters may not care about :p

This is pretty good, but it mostly reminded me that the new Abnormality record came out a few weeks ago (also on Metal Blade), which I had almost forgotten about. Listening to it now and it's pretty killer.

I'm probably very LTTP here, but I just started listening to a band called van Canto who are an a cappella metal band that uses real drums and 5 vocalists to create power metal/hard rock songs.

VanCantoMVM_VoicesOfFire_small-1.jpg

They also have Jonathan Rhys-Davies doing spoken word intros to their songs.

It's surprisingly awesome.
