Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Not sure if this counts as an opinion as much as it does a bad habit, but frighteningly overenthusiastic and hyperbolic fanbases make me never want to touch a lot of games that I'm sure I would enjoy just fine without that discursive baggage. Examples include Undertale, Zelda, Overwatch and Souls (to an extent...I've played enough bits of Souls games to know I don't enjoy them for reasons outside of the fanbase culture).

I don't believe the Scorpio will be able to achieve 4K @ 60 fps. More powerful, dedicated GPU with more FLOPS struggle.

I hate the idea of Resident Evil 7 using the first person perspective.

I have a bunch of these, but I don't want to vent them all out using some list or something, so I'll pick the one that comes first to mind...

Rayman Origins, and later Legends, are better games than anything in the Mario-series released since (meaning everything after Galaxy 2). Ubisoft really succeeded in bringing 2D platforming to the next level, by emphasising speed without taking it to embarrasingly ridiculous lengths like SEGA does with Sonic or sacrificing sense of control, and by doing so with immense charm and a gorgeous art style. It's a really inspired game, that stays true to the tone and feel of Rayman but changes it up where it needed to in order to get the kind of gameplay the developers wanted it to and succeeded in executing.

Then Tropical Freeze came out and made every other 2D platformer ever created, including Rayman, look like it was made by amateurs (oops, I guess another somewhat controversial opinion slipped in there), but all the same those two games are just great with a bunch of elements that I wish Mario could improve upon a bit, especially for the 2D series.

I just got this crazy idea and I saw this thread so I have to say it: I think playing handheld is more comfortable than playing home console games.

I agree with this somewhat. I think due the preconceive expectations of handheld gaming leads itself to a higher level of disbelief. In turn, for me, handheld games actually becomes more immersive without having to have high production values.

I really do believe that third parties were truly trying to undermined and/or intentionally sabotage the launch of the 3DS. When looking at the launch period titles we see that very little effort were put into the titles. In addition, Nintendo didn't have an AAA title at launch due to third parties complaining that Nintendo games sales "crowd out" the sales of there titles. So, we have Nintendo giving them an opportunity to sale their games uncontested and third parties release utter trash and in turn, tanking the sales of the 3DS. Sales recovers due to Nintendo's own efforts and yet those same parties (EA, Ubisoft, Activision) were quick to cancel games from major franchises and to support the 3DS platform at a bare minimum or if at all. In short, third parties wanted the sales but couldn't even deliver a good product.

Fresh from E3:
Sony made the classiest E3 presentation of all time this year and while it helps a lot having something like that it shows that games are king because the tri-fecta of last year was simply not exceeded.
Still regardless of what you have, presenting your games like that gives you points against ones who don't do that, all the companies who had a conference this year should copy that blatantly and if they don't they are stupid.

Stop trying to get celebrities saying that your games are cool, it's awkward and goes against your point.

Voice acting in the new Zelda has been added only to make resonance in western countries (hence why it's in english) and it shows lack of integrity of Aonuma&co. in regards to the series.
That plus the fact that essentially is a mix and match of more genres (which is not a bad thing per se) are a clear sign that they only care about appealing to a wider audience and selling more rather than have a clear creative direction of the franchise.
They essentially crossed all the marks in the checklist that people have been lamenting for years which would be great normally if it wasn't for the fact that this is a franchise with a certain pedegree and should be above with what other people are doing/saying.

/end rant

I've just read the OP, and I'm in agreement. Zelda MM... Never liked it. Could not get into it at all. Loved Skyward Sword.
Don't like F-Zero, it's all a bit slidey.
For some reason, these days I really dislike Nintendo. I wish they'd just go away. Don't know where this comes from. Maybe it's because of those Amiibo's. They used to make cute looking games that were really tough and innovative. Now they just trade off old licenses, the games are easy... They make toys.
Metal Gear Solid. Dreadful series, awful voice acting, overlong cut-scenes. Takes itself way too seriously. On a related subject - Death Stranding. Whilst the internet goes all gooey, it's just an ambiguous series of images that can mean anything - therefore meaning nothing! These types of trailers / films are very easy to do. The hard thing is to actually do something simple that doesn't suck.
Sonic - I always preferred Mario. Never got into Sonic.
Pacland is a better more innovative game than Super Mario Bros - it was released a year earlier, has loads of hidden secrets, warp points etc.

I love lightgun / rail shooters. I think the best Star Wars game ever made was Sega's Star Wars Trilogy Arcade back in '98.
Mr. Do! Is the greatest game of all time.

I feel better now.

-Half Life 1 was a solid game for its time. Half Life 2 is grossly overrated and aged very badly. Valve´s legendary reputation will eventually become a symbolic burden for them (for example, in a somewhat comparable fashion to Metallica´s apparent inability to match the quality of their first records).
Half Life gets way too much credit for revolutionizing the FPS genre when it's really just a better made Quake 2.

Games like Thief and Rainbow 6 were way more hype because they actually pushed new gameplay concepts.

Yeesh, gonna have to agree with ShockingAlberto's last post. Far too much of this thread reads like a venting ground for salty hipsters who seem to view themselves as martyrs to their dislike of something popular rather than being a thread about actual uncommon opinions.

Uncharted 4 is a boring gave with very little interesting interaction. The large areas didn't hold any allure to me at all. One thing the game did make me do is wonder about exploration - what triggers that urge, what makes it worth it. In U4, I didn't feel the urge to do any of it. I wouldn't stumble upon particularly interesting sights, because usually they were laid out in front of me to begin with, or the linear path would make me stumble upon them. And the collectibles definitely don't attract me to spend much longer scouring the map.

A large portion of the game was heading down a rather straightforward road, and there are only so many quips I can hear from the characters before it gets old. Combat didn't develop much, other than the different layout of the battlefields. I did enjoy the hectic nature of it, but it wasn't enough. Climbing wasn't the most exciting thing either, to say the least, and when a large portion of the game is either that, or just walking, I found myself hoping for the end long before it came. I feel like it's a case of style over substance in video games, where the characters have charm, the physics and animations are really cool, the graphics make you question just how much improvement is even left - but the actual interaction and rewarding options given to the player are very few compared to other big games, so elevating it to "masterpiece" status might be putting the focus on something the medium shouldn't be going for. Interaction is the medium's greatest strength, and that didn't feel the case in Uncharted 4 to me. A passive experience, much of the time. Not all. But much.

The jeep sequence was amazing though.

Female protagonists usually suck and are terribly lame, and Aloy is proof.
What about Aloy proves it? Hard to say about a game that isn't out.

I agree about Death Stranding. To me it felt like being vague for the sake of it, and any emotional reaction it could have caused with the grief of the man and the baby, was undermined by how alien and bizarre everything was. It did what it was supposed to do as a teaser - raise interest. But the few posts I did read about it were amazed, and I just don't get why. Because Kojima's name was all over it, the cynic in me says.

Yeesh, gonna have to agree with ShockingAlberto's last post. Far too much of this thread reads like a venting ground for salty hipsters who seem to view themselves as martyrs to their dislike of something popular rather than being a thread about actual uncommon opinions.
What's an actual uncommon opinion?

So anyone without enough money to spare on several gaming hardware is voided of their opinion "as a hardcore gamer"? WTF? Having only one platform does not necessarily make one a fanboy.
As for the narrow mindedness - What about someone who played a lot of games, but has their GoTY list consist entirely of Nintendo games because those are the games they like? Liking one type of game so narrowly can show a dangerous level of fixation, but I guess if the person can argue his choices well there no reason to invalidate his opinion.

I agree about old games 100%. In fact, I'm a little pissed about all those remakes and remasters for old games. Stop fucking shitting on gaming's heritage. Those games should be considered as coherent wholes. Their graphics were created with the tools of the time, let me and people enjoy the work and labour that went into making the best use of those tools. People need to play the games as they ARE, in their original vision and experience, not in their reworked image made to fit current audiences. I say this even if the new graphics improve the look pr gameplay of the game, like in the case of Day of the Tentacle.

I equate hardcore gaming with treating gaming as a hobby. Hobbies cost money, yet that won't stop anyone actually enthusiastic about it. Thinking about it, lists are usually the easiest way for me to dismiss an opinion. No matter where on the internet. If someone posts a list of his goty, most wanted titles, or other favorites, but only includes titles from a single company/platform, they are usually less than a step away from gullibly calling the entire output from other platform holders shit or defending their prefered manufacturer to insane levels. Focusing or limiting yourself (as an adult with income) to a single platform hardly ever comes with good results, but instead (way too often) narrow minded opinions that contribute nothing to broader discussions about gaming and hence aren't worthy to be considered.

It also shows on review sites that focus on a single platform, i.e. these are the ones tending to overrate exclusives compared to multiplat sties.

I feel the opposite. Played both (and the HL2 episodes) in 2011 or so, and didn't really like HL1. The sequel was awesome though, the gravity gun is so cool.

No idea of this is controversial, but I'll say it anyway.

I never liked anything done by Suda 51.
As a Suda fan (who has played very few of his games, to be honest), I'd say this is fine. His games are weird, so I can totally understand how they may not appeal to others.

I think the thread title should be changed to "unpopular" gaming opinion, not controversial

Neither is that.
A lot of people here are quite skeptical about the 4K promises for Project Scorpio (and that's without taking the frame-rate perfomance in consideration).
I'd say that the majority of those who are following the news about it are negative (as in not "buying" it and/or wishing for a better use of that extra power) towards those statements.

I think that story is almost as important as game play, if not as important. If a game doesn't have an entertaining story then I get bored quickly.

That being said I've never played a telltale or David cage game as they have to little game play.

I kinda agree with you. I disliked Killer 7 because the controls were too complicated to learn.

No More Heroes I actually did enjoy, but felt the sequel was kinda a little too much the same where the innovation of the first was lost.

Lollipop Chainsaw was just too much "indie poseur" for me to enjoy.

I categorize him the same way Tarantino is for me. A great director but don't understand why so many people consider him god's gift to film where every movie is treated like this heavenly cinematic experience. Suda 51 does have some enjoyable games, but he seems to have developed a cult following which sees no wrong or flaws in his design.

I have a few

- The Sonic Genesis games are some of the most boring, un strategic 2d platformers. Completely overrated.

- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a boring, tedious game. The worst 3D console Zelda by far.

- Super Mario World is better than Super Mario Bros. 3

- 90 percent of Kirby games are awful if you have any semblance of skill. They are beginner level platformers, they are usually beaten in under 2 hours, and I have no idea why they have a strong fanbase.

- With that being said, the best Kirby game ever is Kirby's Dream Course

People in gaming with issues with other people in gaming need to not go on fucking twitter with a public callout as their first step of action

Possibly said many times but.... playing shooters with a controller is more frustrating than fun. I feel like Destiny could be a fun game, but I hate it. I hate so much that I can't enjoy it properly with a mouse and keyboard.

Fucking yes. Nothing was better than dicking people over in that game. You could just be a straight up a-hole and it was so damn fun.

Trying to master the single player courses was fun and all but nothing beats the frustration you can inflict on people playing the versus mode.

I'm the complete opposite, I find controllers to be fine for shooters, and I'm someone who prefers keyboard and mouse over them.

Lolipop Chainsaw was a broken game. I went through the entire game with almost one combo attack.

XIII was one of the best FPSs ever made and should've had a franchise. The story and Adam West alone should've sold that game.

Hell there was so many ways to tackle enemies and they had more character than most video game goons, one dude was even talking about his fishing trip with his son and how much he enjoyed it and I felt bad after I shot him with a harpoon gun.

Make it happen Ubisoft!

They might be fine, but it bothers me that I know they aren't as good so I feel handicapped. It feels like I'm fighting with the controls rather than using skill to shoot. And I haaaaate aim assist.

One that just came to my head (sorry if I'm posting here too much)

As someone who's only 22, more people would benefit from playing older games (especially ones beyond just the really known games like Mario, Sonic, and Chrono Trigger), and older games in general are a little (though not significantly) underrated on this forum. I feel like stuff like Gunstar Heroes and Rocket Knight Adventures really get snubbed in the conversation of best 2D platformer of all-time vs. stuff like ....the recent Donkey Kong games and Shovel Knight, and stuff like the original Dragon Quest/Warrior games get snubbed in the conversation of best JRPG.

Also, more modern indie 2D platformers would benefit from having a finite number of lives. Not all games need to have a finite number of lives, but having a finite number of lives isn't "arbitrary difficulty," or an "archaic game design holdover from the days of arcades". It's a different measure of skill, it requires a certain level of consistency/precision from players who die enough that they're forced to redo certain parts.

I don't think it's actually a controversial thing to say that most gamers have a very poor concept of history within the industry :p

This is silly. Who's preventing you from enjoying those old games?

1. It's getting increasingly harder/impossible to legally obtain and run them. Many new remasters don't include the original game and no one is putting any effort into making those older games available to the public (besides sites like GoG and a few publishers.)

2. It's about legacy. These remakes replace the original for newer gamers. In a few years time, these new remakes will pretty much be the only version to play and the only version in the public conscious, even for rather serious gamers. I already know self-described hardcore gamers who refuse to play NES games out of principle. The old originals will be thrown out and forgotten. It's not so much "who's preventing me from playing the older games", as "who's disincentivizes everyone from enjoying classics." I mean, movies do remakes as well, but at least they're sold as bringing a new vision to the original, and not as replacing it. If the remakes in games worked like that, I'd be much less pissed about them.

Nintendo peaked (game wise) with Super Nintendo and their next best console for gaming library was the Gamecube. (I will always want another Eternal Darkness)

My first point might simply be driven by nostalgia and childhood happiness, who knows

Sotn should be the only template used to make future castlevanias. They should have stayed with that and just iterated on it through time. Look at where the series is now because they ignored how they had a winning formula already with the SotN template.

What an abomination the series currently is. AH BOMB IN ASHUN

Edit: thinking on it some more. Imo.....If they stuck with the sotn template, they eventually would have ended up with a castle based souls game.... interesting.

Don't know if controversial but, I have never really understood the love for the Gears of War games. The first 2 were good but then it has felt the same ever since. I was barely blown away by the Gears of War 4 showing at E3 this year. I mean... it's more of the same and the same being something that hasn't quite changed or evolved since its inception from the first game.

a lot of people sure but the vast majority? going against that grain is still an unpopular opinion

Devs aren't being held back from making great games by the evil, money grubbing publishers, or marketing, or censorship... they are mostly being held back by their own shortcomings: lack of imagination, fear, etc.
