The story content is not good. It’s poorly written, boring to play, and filled with small annoyances, but in a weird way Street Fighter V would have been a better game if it had launched with it. Even if it had been just as bad, it would have at least been seen as a noble attempt to modernize Street Fighter’s narrative. The eye-rolling dialog and shaky plot structure would have been easier to ignore if it was just another mode in a complete package.

So how do I, a longtime 'Street Fighter' fan feel about 'A Shadow Falls?' Well, from within a 'Street Fighter' bubble, it's pretty great. It's like an animated 'Street Fighter' movie, but rendered in Unreal 4 with playable bits. As I said before, it's not all the DLC characters and the current roster that are featured. There is a nice sprinkling of NPCs that wind up as in-match opponents. Some are generic, like Shadaloo henchmen, but others could easily wind up being named DLC characters in the future.

And that's just the in-game characters. 'A Shadow Falls' is mainly cutscenes. (Rendered cutscenes, and not those still ones from the character story mode.) The matches are one-round affairs, and the game often has the player playing a good guy for a round, only to follow-up with a round where the player now controls a bad guy. These matches can be skipped, but there is no divergent outcome. That is, the story does not have branching gameplay. And yet, within the linear story, there is a mess of storylines and characters. The story spans the globe, but of course, all the matches wind up occurring in in-game stages. So that means, there's lots of London/Brazil/Waterfall, etc.

App Trigger - 8.5/10 (Note, this review decided to review the entire game to date, not just the story mode)

Finally, it was just great to see the entire cast of Street Fighter V in one platform. Urien and Juri are not yet ready for a multiplayer audience, yet they both shined well in their brief appearances here. Each had a seemingly fair amount to do with the story, both in the background and in the forefront, and each brought a distinct personality that shone among the rest of the fighters-as-heroes cast.

A Shadow Falls doesn’t change the way Street Fighter V is played in any major way, but it provides the game with something more important – a heart. Before this story mode arrived, Street Fighter V just felt like a dry collection of fighters, basic modes and mechanics. Now we have some context, and a better sense of what the game’s new fighters are all about.

Between A Shadow Falls, the individual character vignettes and Challenge Mode, Street Fighter V now packs a solid dozen hours or more of single-player content. The game’s underlying mechanics were always rock solid, and now, six months after launch, Street Fighter V finally feels like a full game. If you’ve been holding out until now, feel free to join the fight.

So… the story mode feels a little cheap in production value, it loads way too often, and it’s cheesy as all hell. But I enjoyed it. I put it on and didn’t move until it was done without a second thought. Street Fighter’s cast is iconic with good reason, and it’s exciting to see them unleashed in this context, free of the cringe-inducing too-serious attitude taken in many of its live adaptations, from the diabolical The Legend of Chun-Li to the enjoyable (but still too dour) Assassin’s Fist. This is back to basics corny plotting of the 1995 movie or cartoon. That, I’m convinced, is where Street Fighter’s story belongs.

Still, to quote the mistranslation of a former Capcom employee, “It’s better than nothing”. There’s a lot of lore to unpack, some unique battles, and even some difficulty for those who feel that the standard settings are wimpy at best. It’s a free download too, though one you’ll need to grab from the PlayStation Store separately, so it’s probably worth a go. For me though, it was hyped up a tad too much with very little payoff.

So what’s next for the tale of Street Fighter? Now that the timelines have converged and non-canon character endings have been abandoned, it honestly feels like Capcom is teasing another “season” of story content that’s basically a retelling of the events of Street Fighter III. Perhaps we can pay for it with Fight Money. There’s still no word yet on how Street Fighter x Tekken fits in. Maybe that’ll be explained in Akuma’s story in Tekken 7.

Financial Post - 6/10 (Note: This is a rereview of the entire game, including the story mode)

Months after initial release, I finally feel comfortable giving Street Fighter V a score. But it’s also a painful verdict. The fighting systems at its core are as good as it’s ever been – maybe the best in the genre today. Its roster is filled with personality and variety. It’s already provided for hours of personal entertainment and priceless moments on the Capcom Pro Tour.

But everything surrounding it has been a dismal failure. The Story Mode is barely a narrative and the tutorials fail to teach. And the best new addition – the six new fighters – must be bought on top of the base package, either separately or through the Season Pass.

There’s a great game in Street Fighter V, but only if you’re willing to learn the hard way. Capcom will need more than the few thousand competitors following the Capcom Pro Tour to make this game, and the series as a whole, sustainable for the future.

It’s a shame this story mode doesn’t live up to the quality of the game it houses, but this was never the focal point. It’s a sideshow, an aside to the greater piece. The real stories are the players and the competitions, the 5000 entrants at EVO and their hopes to take the title. Maybe one day Street Fighter will produce a more compelling narrative for its characters, but until then, my and many others’ journeys in this game will continue to be a personal one.

I did a review with a colleague of mine for our website if anyone's interested in a more informal discussion. We go full analytical (as much as you can for a fighting game story) and appreciated most of the SFV charm with some sour note on the utter flub that is Necalli/Nash arc. All in all we still enjoyed it though! Defintely lived up to my SF2 the movie expectations and even succeeded them in regards to some genuinely moving sub plots!

Here's the review if anyone's interested/wants to post it in the OP.

Following in the footsteps of the superb story modes found in the last two Mortal Kombat games, Street Fighter V’s “general story” brings its cast together for a globe-hopping adventure with vaguely apocalyptic stakes. It’s mostly noninteractive movie scenes, with the occasional break to let you blast through a trivial, single-round bout with one of the game’s many characters. That formula worked great in Mortal Kombat, where the story stretches out to around five hours and gives you enough fights with different characters to provide a legitimate test bed for players looking for a new favorite. With its minimal fights and easy difficulty level, Street Fighter V’s story doesn’t have the same novice-friendly benefits.

Eh it was no different than the MK story modes or the Xrd ones in terms of stupid. I don't see why so harsh.

This isn't a LucasArts adventure story.

Yeah I agree. The only thing I'd say is it's significantly shorter than both MK/Xrd's story modes, which is a bit disappointing, but not unexpected.

If I'm honest it was better than I was expecting, after the travesty which was the character stories in it's base release.

I just thought it was boring.

I wish they had put in the effort to create something like MKX's Towers. That's a far better use of resources.

It's actually longer if you add in the character stories. Which help round out every single character. I would definitely like this approach for the next MK. Way too many characters were left out and had little to no exposition. In SFV the character stories help out a lot.

I got some enjoyment out of it, & Rashid easily had the best arc of the story. Hopefully they do another Story for Season 2.

Started it two days ago and haven't felt the need to return, I'm sure I'll play it slowly over time, seems like the best way to make it fun for me. Guile's hair has certainly stolen the show so far 😂

The character story felt like it was a setup for the general story. But instead we just got a mess with no build up and explanation.

I'd like that approach if effort was put into it.

I still think the artwork used in the SFV character stories is pretty awful, and over all the character stories were super lazily done.

This mode would've been given a pass if it had launched with the game. As it is I imagine it's going to attract negativity more than anything. It's not particularly well-made, well written or interesting. Some occasional funnies, mostly relating to Zangief shouting MUSCLE.

That's what people wanted. If you found it boring then either you take SF lore way too seriously or anime storytelling isn't your thing.

Anime storytelling?

You can make a story with tons of unique characters and make it good. It doesn't need to be garbage tier like SFV.

It was alright (definitely worse than the NRS games), but what really killed it for me was the loading screens. Ruined any sense of pacing the story had when you would finish a cutscene and then load into another cutscene.

Started it tonight and found that I've almost finished it when I quit. So yeah, it's short but I've really been enjoying it. I had no interest in a story mode but it has me laughing so hard so often that I'm glad they included it. Plus it's a nice way to try out some DLC characters before committing to a purchase.

Its their first try at it.

It was exactly what I expected and wanted.

Netherealm took a while. People think that MK9 was their first go at it but it really wasn't. Arc also had been doing story modes (better ones IMO) for a while.

Is it wonky? hell yeah.
Is the story a bit bland? yep, lots of shit make no sense if you think about it and the end is just there.

however, for a first attempt, its what I expected.

My pc does not run the game and I can't login all the time on the pc on the living room that can run on max settings.

SF5 accepts EVERYTHING if you are on Family Share, even different Capcom accounts.... but NOT the story mode.

Platy gives it a 2/10

I know I'm in the minority but I honestly never really saw the appeal of story modes in these type of games.

I remember with Smash 4, people complained about the lack of a big story mode but considering how much of a bloated, resource-devouring mess Subspace Emissary turned out to be, I'm kinda glad they didn't bother this time around.

The whole mode is justified entirely by all the times FANG prances around. I probably missed some scenes from laughing at that weirdo.

I didn't really care about Fang before, but I enjoy the character now. Just friggin' ridiculous... I really want a gif of when he ran from Ken.

That seems really harsh. It wasn't the greatest thing I've ever seen but it was some good, cheesy fun. I can imagine it would have been less enjoyable if a grand narrative was expected.

From the moment you first see FANG you should understand the tone of the story mode.

I'd imagine it's more enjoyable if you're somebody who watches B movies.

Long dialogues about fate and power, exaggerated emotions, epic music playing when epic fights are about to go down, etc.

The first element is as old as humans could tell stories. The second is a key element of Drama, the fundamental form of entertainment. The third is a natural assumption and a trope used since music was combined with drama.

These are not elements that would define an "Anime Story". These are elements of story telling.

What didn't you like?

The terrible pacing, unfocused narrative, bland characterization, and overly cliche storytelling.

SFV jumbles around between several different characters and situations, but none have a satisfying arc. For a Street Fighter game having so many crazy different characters, it takes itself way too seriously.

Oh yeah, and the whole game part of it was bad as well. One round matches against brain dead AI? lol, are you serious Capcom?

You watch anime right? You know what I mean.

Yeah, I think what he is getting at is that all anime doesn't follow that description. You seem to think that all anime is shonen. It isn't.

You think this took itself way too seriously?

Exact opposite for me especially that final chapter where it turns into the Avengers.
