Came for Bojack Horseman and the thread didn't disappoint...

The last episode of Season 2 was probably one of the saddest things i have seen in animation.

Sorry everyone, Grave of the Fireflies exists and trumps your paltry children's movies and shows.

Even worse is when you realize the author of the original story based it on his actual life and what happened to his sister.

Thought this would show up. I haven't seen it but have heard it is notorious for being extremely sad and depressing

So many good ones mentioned already, so -

Rose of Versailles

In an episode titled, His Smile is Forever Gone, "...she wanders through the night consumed by grief, regret, and nostalgia, before collapsing from her illness in the rain", and this is what you see above.

idk why but I always used to get this sad/melancholy feeling watching Fievel Goes West or The Land Before Time as a child.

Toy Story 3. I forget which part, but I teared in the theatre with my then girlfriend. She wasn't crying lmao

I hate tear jerkers

Optimus Prime dying was the saddest thing to me when I was younger:

Finally someone posts it.

This made what happened in Transformers Prime just as sad. Don't want to spoil what happens (entirely) but the showrunners did a very smart thing with the framing of the scenes. Won't say anymore but I'll post a picture:

The episode dedicated to Uncle Iroh's voice actor in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

That shit hit me deep.

Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile, tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
Little soldier boy
Come marching home
Brave soldier boy
Comes marching home

Colonel Hughes death
didn't hit me until his daughter started asking why he had to go away. And my dumbass was at work watching that scene during my lunch break.

I don't know if it's necessarily "sad", but I cry evertym.

These Simpsons ones hit me hard. Especially the Mother Simpson ending that replaces the regular credits.

It's how the film should have ended... especially if they wanted to really scar little kids for life. ;)

Personally this scene does nothing for me, but everything from
Andy saying goodbye to his mom and to leaving his toys with Bonnie makes me weak.

Holy shit this scene and what came before it. He went down fighting with everything he had. When they took his gun, he used his (drill tail) sword. When they took his sword, he used his laser eyes, when they took THAT from him, he used a make shift club from a rock and some twisted branch. Such a great scene.

"Let his spark join the Matrix, the greatest of Cybertron."

TEARS

There was an episode of American Dad where Jeff was abducted by Rogers people. He learns of a way that he might be able to go back - by proving to a jury that his love to Haley was true Love. If it's not true love, then they take his privates. He has to have his thoughts read by a being called The Majestic. A depressing (yet upbeat) song, aptly named Majestic starts, and his mind is probed. Even though it only projected Jeffs bad memories, it was still a depressing moment for me. The look of defeat, followed by Jeffs actions killed me. In the end, it was a plot by the alien leader to never allow people to return by having the Majestic only show bad memories, but those few moments were brutal.

I found the song, Majestic, by Wax Fang, and I love the blasting it. Depressing, yet not at the same time I feel.

Pixar is full of them, so I'll just list three: Eve from Wall-E desperately trying to
fix Wall-E at the end of the movie and then humming a song to him as she gives up
, Riley from Inside Out admitting to her parents that
she misses Minnesota and the ensuing group hug,
and of course the beginning of Up.

From One Piece: Nami's backstory from the Arlong arc with
her adoptive mom being shot right in front of her.
Then leaving the flashback and going to
Nami stabbing her tattoo over and over with a knife while crying out Arlong's name before eventually breaking down and asking Luffy for help.
Incredibly sad, but made the defeat of Arlong probably the most satisfying victory I've seen in a shonen anime.

Well most recently

To think this is actually an improvement from where Pearl was in Rose's Scabbard, the first Steven Universe episode to really obliterate you with sadness.

The Tale of X-9 from samurai jack.

Here's an edited short version of it on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMxq98egMk

In the series Jack mows down all manner of robots, who are just basically cannon fodder to be killed in masses. The Tale of X-9 gives you a glimpse into the motivations of a particular robotic assassin sent after jack. The entire episode builds up his character only for him to be killed in the blink of an eye.

its one of the best.

Oh man, this was my favorite movie growing up. Rugrats was like my favorite show, too.

Everybody says this scene was sad but
Hughes dying
somehow managed to hit me harder. (the image above was still sad though. just saying.)I know his shenanigans can be annoying, but it still felt like a punch to the gut. Combined with the fact that
Winry was connecting to his family very well, only for them to lose someone almost right after she gets close to them...
Honestly, the circumstances were very similar to the image above, plus other red flags so I should have seen it coming.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Not all of it. There are moments of hope and joy.

That's what makes it so goddam effective.

Then the real world has to come in and punch you square in the gut and stomp on you while you're down.

Samurai Jack was a solid show that did a lot of weird stuff like this episode and damn if it wasn't powerful.
