Grabbed Shadow of Mordor via Bundlestars and it looks phenomenal. Played for about an hour. Already died at the hands of one Captain, but got my revenge not long after.

Combat is fast and fun, not sure how long it'll hold my attention though, as open world games usually bore me after a few sessions.

Excellent bundle this month. The Beginner's Guide is easily one of the best games I've ever played.

Edit: And Super Time Force Ultra, which is criminally underrated. Seriously, it is fucking excellent.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised by the anniversary update being required for Gears 4 or really any future Win 10 games. Wasn't one of the oft repeated lines from MS that some of the common issues would be resolved by the update?

After several hours tiddling around, I'll give you my (incomplete) impressions of Deadly Premonition the Director's Cut, you know, for the three of you who haven't played it yet.

The story: It's heavily implied you play Zach, the guiding voice in the head of Special Agent Francis York Morgan of the FBI. Please, call him York, everyone calls him that. On the surface it might appear you play York himself but at the beginning he speaks to Zach and you get a QTE to answer him, so one can only assume you're Zach and you make his decisions for him. York constantly speaks to Zach, almost like Dale Cooper spoke to Diane via a tape recorder in Twin Peaks. Anyway, you're called to the small town of Greenvale to investigate the murder of one Anna Graham, an 18-year-old waitress and aspiring model. You meet several quirky characters along the way, and you have to help York figure out who did it.

It's got a lot of Twin Peaks (an FBI Agent who's particular about coffee, a young woman's murder, a special room in dreams, a "Pot Lady" instead of a "Log Lady," several flirty women, a gruff sherriff with a weak and sensitive deputy, etc.) but it also has a lot of Silent Hill (a predominantly-red Otherworld with zombie characters, some of whom are nurses, and that nobody seems to talk about nor does the protagonist ever seem to discuss it; an antagonist with an obscured face and a huge weapon he drags along the ground behind him; tanky controls; even similar font treatments and character art style.) So far it's interesting, even though I haven't even finished episode 1 and I already have a good idea who the killer is.

The gameplay: Separated into different parts. There's a free-roam section where you can do sidequests (if you can find them,) or checkpoint races in a clunky-ass police car, or fishing minigames and whatnot. Then you can do the main storyline, which involves a "profiling segment" - collecting clues and then getting premonitions about what happened - and Otherworld segments, which involve killing or hiding from zombies and such. Oddly enough, combat is the reverse of Silent Hill: you start with unlimited pistol ammo which can usually kill a zombie in two headshots, and then pick up limited-use melee weapons which are far more effective at killing zombies, so far killing them in only one hit and occasionally two. You can pick up other guns later, though: I currently have a submachine gun but I'll try and conserve that for when I really need it.

They give you ample time to do sidequests: time flows about three times faster than normal (1 minute in game is about 20 real seconds,) but you can advance time in various ways such as sleeping, having cutscene meals, or smoking cigarrettes. Sometimes for the main quest you're told "be here before a certain time," in which case you can speed right there, and other times you're told "be here between these two times," in which case you pretty much have to kill time. You can't show up early. My major complaint about the time thing is it's hard to know when shops and houses open, so it's very possible you can wake up too early and have literally nothing to do.

I guess I should mention in the gameplay section here that this game is buggier than a bait shop. Durante did a passing fair job of improving things, but be prepared to change your audio settings if you're using 5.1 or 7.1, and save as frequently as you can, because there will be crashes. Also, if I alt-tab out, I get greeted with a black screen and the inability to do anything if I tab back in, requiring me to close it via the task manager. So yes, the port is exactly as bad as you heard it was.

The graphics: I like the character and item textures in this game. The rest of the environment and the animations are...well I'm gonna be gentle and say "dated." It doesn't detract from the rest of the game, though; it's livable.

The dialogue and audio: The dialogue is pretty weird, and at some times laugh-out-loud hilarious. York's character of an indifferent movie snob that grates with the downhome quality of the townsfolk makes for great exchanges. At one point he describes the special effects of a grisly scene in a sci-fi movie during dinner. The deputy exclaims, "Some of us are trying to eat here!" and York calmly replies, "I know. I'm one of them." I wouldn't say he's socially awkward per se, but he comes across as laid-back and "doesn't give a fuck" even though he's serious about his job. And despite that, his charm makes you want to root for him. He's a great protagonist. I also like how he will chat with Zach when there's nobody else in the car, usually about movies. The voice acting itself is quite good, and the music is incredibly catchy. They do jump around from riff to riff, even in the middle of dialogue, to reflect the mood, and it can be a bit jarring, but overall it's not bad, especially when the music is ... just plain fun.

The length: I'm not sure. I've put ten hours into it, but some of that was dicking around with the sound to get the car to stop making a constant handbrake noise, some stuff I had to repeat because of a crash, etc. I have yet to finish episode 1 of 7, but I've heard subsequent episodes are shorter. There's also some replayability in that you can replay chapters when you're done to do all the sidequests or collect all the trading cards. Apparently nothing is truly missable? Which is always a plus.

The verdict: It's a shitty port and it didn't deserve to only be playable via fan patches. That much I can say for sure. So when someone says they didn't like it/can't get through it/aren't willing to fiddle with it to play it, I honestly can't fault those opinions. But if you're willing to try and get past that, you'll get a charming experience. It's currently 90% off in the Steam store, looks like 2.50 or so (it's 2.79 Canadian.) If you're okay with the aforementioned problems, get it. If you're not...well I can respect that too.

Edit! May have spoken too soon. The game is now crashing at the same spot each time so it's very possible I can't progress... turns out I needed to set it in Win98 Compatibility Mode to get past the crash. That's really crazy...

Looking at the GOW 4 requirements, I should be covered for "recommended" but I have an i5 4670k instead of the 4690k, albeit overclocked to 4.2ghz, so I think that should suffice

I'm just going for Forza in re: to MS games on Win10.

Not interested in Gears unless they sell MP alone, but I don't have much confidence in there being a huge player base for it online.

No crossplay again AFAIK, so it'll be dead on PC in a week or two.

Why did you cherry pick those requirements?

LrRyN76.jpg

Looks like I don't give a fuck.

Disregarding UWP / MS Store / Shit-port for just a moment, Gears Of War gameplay is so pathetic at this point for me. It's tedious unless I'm playing with a friend in coop, at which point we end up providing better entertainment than the game. Would it kill MS to shake things up in these franchises once in a while?

I was hoping we'd get a Sunset Overdrive announcement by now. I have all this silly Microsoft credit and nothing to spend it on. I guess I could buy KI packs.

Which is why I wanted crossplay, even as an option for users who don't mind playing against pad/kbm.

Personally I hate playing TPS type games with KBM.

So yeah, put me in the 'I don't give a fuck about KBM advantage.' Then again even with an option, community probably dead on PC anyway.

Well all the coop modes are crossplay at least. Also I think small PC base is why they added Bot Matches.

explain me devs and publishers logic of last years, cuz I don't get it. If we check latest steam statistics, only 10% of steam users even have GTX9xx of any kind, let alone GTX10xx

They keep making games for 10% of PC population? How does that make any sense whatsoever?

I understand it's only a survey and most people ignore those, but it actually seems more or less true for me, considering GPU prices these days.

the NMS "experimental" branch has been updated a couple more times today...only had a couple of little stutters that I could notice...with those patches and the new NVIDIA driver out today it seems like most (if not all) of my problems with the game have been fixed performance wise

also people have noticed the new experimental branch may have improved the actual rendering of the game itself but I'm not tech savvy enough to really know...maybe Durante or someone could be able to look into that better

Very good humble indie bundle again. Would be all over it if I didn't own all but Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time and Nuclear Throne.

Highly recommend to buy at at least BTA, if you don't own lots of them already.

Grow Up is so good. So relaxing and so fun to play. Just can't help but smile while playing it. These games are the best thing Ubisoft has ever done.

I wish Ubi had the guts to blow 100 million on a full AAA version. Do it Ubisoft! Skip out on a few more years of AssCreed and bring home the goods.

You have to remember that in 10 years your integrated Intel GPU will be more powerful than GTX1080.
Then everyone will be able to play these games.
The devs are just playing the long game.

Any game that explicitly requires a 9XX are last-ditch low-effort ports.

Most games out there will run pretty good on a 6XX or 7XX series card if you drop some settings from ultra to high or medium-high. The Potato Masher video series is a good example of this.

There are unofficial mods emerging too:

So the mod scene is starting to ramp up for those on PC, and there's already some very good ones. Here's what I'm using;

Fast Actions - No more holding down clicks or buttons for anything
Remove scanlines, CA, Vignetting
ShutUp - Remove voice warnings, can even choice between which ones you want to take out
Hi-Res Icons

The mod site is getting hammered and is super slow right now though.

I might actually end up getting a console if all the cross-plat stuff goes Win10 exclusive. I'd prefer to hang onto Win7.

The majority of stuff I play is CRPGs anyway, and the occasional AAA game like Batman if it comes down to 5-10 bucks.
