New PES 2017 hands-on impressions, gameplay

Got a good few more games in since i've gotten home, still really liking it.

Lots of nice wee animations, short/long passes and through balls feel good.

Referees seem absolutely fine to me, plenty fouls being called without it being over the top like in some previous versions.

Shooting feels fine, might turn it down to the lower difficulties to get a load of shots in.

Keepers seem fine as well, not had any goals so far that i'd say they've been at fault for, and seen a few quality saves that haven't been superhuman. Again that'll need a lot more time to say for sure though.

Put a fair few games into it, early impressions are almost universally very positive. Just for reference I’ve been playing on Top player and Superstar as mostly France (me) against Germany, and when the game comes out i’ll be 95% Master League.

+ Something that gets brought up every year and something that’s immediately apparent when playing the demo is that they fixed the refs and keepers, and not PR bollocks fixed, they actually went and fixed them this year. I know, unbelievable Jeff.

+ Through balls are so much better. As someone who isn’t good enough to use it manually i’ve had to rely on the “basic” assist setting in recent PES games, which was a problem because it was too scripted and restrictive which resulted in there being certain balls that could just not be played, especially shorter, cuter through balls. Not so here, the through balls here honestly remind me of the PES glory days where I’ve always remembered them as being incredibly satisfying to pull off. I slipped an absolutely sensational one through two defenders earlier and not only did I pull it off, but the attacker reacted and got on the end of it. In ’16 the A.I’s being too slow to react was a much too frequent problem.

+ Passing..and everything in general is less restrictive/more responsive. In ’16 tight intricate moves would break down much too often because the computer was too dumb/slow and would either play the wrong pass, play it too late, or play it and then the receiving player wouldn’t control it quick enough. I've only had something like that happen once as of yet, so here's hoping.

+ Something I was very pleased to see is that the new tactics options aren’t just a gimmick they can slap on the box. My first match was as Arsenal and they have attacking fullbacks on, during the match they were getting forward but were tending to occupy and hang around the same space as the wingers. So I went back into the options and added “Wing rotation” as the second attacking option, now FB’s were getting forward but the wingers were moving into different space. Some options are locked in the demo for whatever reason but i’ve messed around with “hug the touchline” and “tiki-taka” as well and they both do exactly as you’d expect.

+ Default speed is good, usually I knock it down a notch but if this Is the default speed on release I won’t bother.

+ Replays don’t move at glacial speed.

Very early days of course but yeah, very happy with it at the moment. Now to trust Konami not to fuck it up

I really hope they don't fuck up transfers like they did last year. Starting last season with Van Persie still in the Utd squad shows how outdated the squads were. They were so slow to patch in the updates as well, had to wait months before we can even have Martial in Man Utd.

Looking forward to the demo, I told myself I wouldn't buy this year's version but hearing things like the keepers and referees being fixed make it super tempting.

Played a few games and really enjoyed it. Deffo getting it, difficulty seems better too as last few releases have been far too easy on Top Player

does anyone know if there will be a new free version PES 2017 myClub Edition (with commentary and few more features than in demo) like 2016 edition?

There are chants for Corinthians in the stadium, so it seems they are also a partner. Hope we get Arena Corinthians in an update (or in the of game). Cant be sure about Boca, but I think I heard different chants while playing with them as well.

Really liked the demo. But how can I move players in the formation? Some settings are fixed (cant change) but why would they lock this?

Just realized I can change difficulty of the game lol

If it's like PES 2016 hold down X when hovering over a player on the formation screen and you can move him while holding X.

Can't change formations at all in the demo.

You can't change formation in the demo neither strategies or use all advanced instructions, but will be possible in full game.

Fuck me those are glowing impressions. Loved 2015 but told myself I was done with this after last year's shitshow. Tempting....

I see people judging the quality of the game via demo, even for pes2016.

Those who are still playing the game would know that Konami has drastically improved the gameplay over multiple patches, and that the demo is no longer representative of how the game is now.

I see this will happen for PES2017 as well, and judging by the quality of gameplay now, I have faith the game will end up being the best in the series in another 10 months time.

I'm looking forward to playing more games with pass assist off (which essentially seems to be a "semi assist" setting between assisted and full manual (which you have to hold L2 for).

Pass assist 1 feels good but perhaps a bit too assisted. I only got chance to play one game with pass assist turned off, so more testing is needed, but I liked the feel of how it played and the extra freedom in the passing.

Couple of impressions:

- Referee is fine. AI likes to tackle
- Strange blur effect in replay looks odd with 60 fps
- Player models are fantastic, animations as well
- Very fast paced, arcady gameplay
- Finally no input delay!
- Players react very quick to button prompts, but somehow still appear to be on rails sometimes
- Set pieces are the same as last year
- Players have more weight
- On highest difficulty again some AI cheating with indefendable attacks out of nowhere
- Shooting is rubber band-ish, feels alright but somehow very random
- Goalie AI is hit or miss - Most distance balls are held, Volley, BK are instant goals

Again, this is a PES demo and the final build will be tweaked, but as recent history showed, not for the better. I hope the netcode will be ok.

Does anybody know which commentary language options are available in which regions, and/or if multiplayer is region locked?

Also worth mention to those on XBONE that only on PS4 you can import fully edited options files...like on PS2

If you have the option of both consoles something to consider,

Im worried that Libertadores is not yet announced....

They will announce South/North America licenses this or next week. I was worried as well, but they will have brazilian, Argentinean and Chilean league, it was in their website but they deleted until they have the event to announce it all.

By the demo you can see that Corinthians is a partner, but they said they have "more partnershipS to announce", I'm guessing one USA team at least and one more south American... Let's see.

It's back every year in fairness :p Nice to hear positive impressions but it always takes a few weeks for PES to show it's true colours. I'll still get it like I have done every single year since PES1 but I've long stopped expecting it to be faultless. For every thing they fix something else always seems to suffer....

If there are easy to download and use Option Files, I will probably buy it around Christmas.

Some of the PES5 and 6 OFs were so good. I miss those days.

Looks like the game is 1360 x 1080 again on Xbox One. Had several games and everything felt great to me and I scored some great goals. I'll probably get it when its cheaper since it's always been a series I play in short bursts.

Rumours are, they have lost the Copa Libertadores license to EA.

No it really isn't. Pes 2016 was hot arcade garbage with 0 gameplay depth but it was perfect for casual soccer fans who didn't really know much about the sport. There is not even one category in which pes is better than fifa and it's been that way since pes 2014. Fifa has better animations, better graphics(subjective), better ball physics, better goalkeepers, better ain, more gameplay depth, better mode depth, better online, more teams, better presentation, better commentary, etc.

Pes 2016 was not even better than fifa 13 so to expect pes 2017 to be better than fifa 17 is just a joke. Minor improvements have been made to Pes 2017 and the biggest improvement is the goalkeepers. The ball physics are still linear, the players still look like they are ice skating on the field, the shot trajectories are still lacking, etc. There's a long way for pes to go before it becomes a viable alternative to fifa.

Huh, that's curious. Part of the reason I'm enjoying PES over FIFA recently is the fact that every goal you score is different because of the ball physics, something which I never really noted with FIFA. Haven't played FIFA since FIFA 14 mind so might be out of date with that view. The goalfeel in PES for me is just so satisying.

Ball physics, pes? Huh? Even most pes fanatics will readily admit that the ball physics are lacking compared to fifa. As to every goal feeling different, well I'd attribute that to the ai. In fifa, there seems to be specific ways to score and you see those patterns repeat themselves because the ai seems rigid. People tend to exploit those patterns because the game encourages them to do so. Fifa 10 had this issue with chipped shots, fifa 14 was the finesse shots at the edge of the box, fifa 15 was near post shots, etc. The ai play the same way for all teams and this is why the goals feel the same.

I have to say it is fantastic, I am not sure how they were able to fine tune so much in less than a year. The player ID really really stands out this year and I am loving the little bit of flair they added. As someone who really didn't care for PES 16 I am really enjoying this years version, cant wait to play more.

Nice goal but this is a perfect example of the ball "physics" in pes. If you watch the replay closely, you'll notice 2 things. The first is that he kicks the ball with the instep of his foot and yet the spin of the ball is similar to a shot taken with the outside of the foot. The second thing you'll notice is that the ball doesn't start spinning until it has passed the player. Both of those things are physically unnatural and is a sore point for me when playing the games. When I see a the replay, it actually takes away some of the satisfaction gained from scoring.

Thats the problem in FIFA there is not any different goal, all the same plays over and over again, all players can do all the skills, the pacing is poor, and arcadey feeling

But agree to disagree

Huh but I'm agreeing with you that the same plays repeat themselves? I think the only thing we aren't agreeing on is the cause of it. You said ball physics and I said the cause was ai but I'm no longer sure what we were discussing anymore.
