Nioh Thread: Defy Death

Is the second boss more or less impossible with a hammer? Although I did last longer compared to 30 seconds when I used a spear before I stopped for the night.
Nope, I've done it. Same deal as the other weapons, don't get greedy with your hits or you'll be punished, especially swinging a heavier weapon.

I felt it was even slightly easier actually, I get the same amount of attacks in but they eat more of her stamina than swords.

I did find a video that shows how you can cheese the boss to victory, but I can't figure out how the move works. It looks like Water Sword, but he's using it in Mid Stance rather than High Stance, and even then, you can't move while using Water Sword. Any idea how you pull that ability off? I have everything learned under dual katanas.
That's mid stance block+X, the high stance one is stationary. If you can't pull it off, you must have another skill assigned to that. I don't even know if DS has more than one, but you can check in "customize skills".

Not impossible gummy. The whole demo has been beaten at base level with bare hands.

But yeah the demo seems easier with faster weapons. The key to the second boss is to lock on and keep running, don't get hit with the paralysis attack, and don't get greedy with your attacks. You can safely just get a few attacks in at once and then back off. Lots of good tips and even videos posted if you look back through the thread.

Thanks, I'll give it a look later, once I get a few hours and a meal in me. If I can't manage it, I'm just going to stubbornly do it with the axe I was using, or grind life and stamina upgrades until it's as easy to kill as one of the zombies.

Is there an ingame time counter for the saves? I've paid 60 Euro for games that lasted for less than this beta to platinum. And there's still things to do for me in this beta.

Gotta try the elixir thing, I'll probably run off of them soon while trying Tachibana, lol.

How best to counter the stun move of the twilight version of the bat-lady boss? She spams it like crazy and my needle supply runs low. Even dodging can be tight and a mistake means I'm frozen for way too long.
Learn to dodge it by listening to the audio cue. Relatively wide dodge window if you keep an ear out for it.

Loved the beta but yeah the bosses need some real balancing. This game is not gonna sell if all the bosses are one or two hit kills. That stuff should be reserved for "Dante must die" mode. Also I hope the beginning has more balance. Kinda boring to have to grind the first area until your appropriately leveled foe the rest of mission 1.
Bosses are already balanced well enough. They're sufficiently telegraphed to the point players are able to kill them without taking a single hit (even with low level gear) if they put the time into it instead of relying on brute forcing or exploits or luck, and you're given plenty of additional legroom through various means with the levelling system, loot, Kodama bonus elixirs and the ability to co-op. You don't have to grind for resources; recognize the patterns and you're set with some practice, like with any properly designed boss. If anything, keep the base difficulty of the (fundamentally sound) bosses as is and expand their Twilight Mode versions with DMC4's Dante Must Die twists rather than randomly throwing in some mook. The latter is just so uninspired and those throw the balance out of whack.

That said, some patterns could use another pass with finetuned hitboxes.

She's doable with it, but the hammer / axe is generally quite cumbersome compared to the other weapons.

^ that's fine for the audience playing the beta and I mostly agree with you. But IMO the sales are gonna be bad if a lot of the bosses mostly 1HK or 2HK you.

For you.

I think that the damage the bosses do is alright. My main issue with the bosses is the large health pool they have.

Spend like an hour or two yesterday fencing with player's revenants (grass sub-mission is very convenient for that, plenty of bloodstains and small areas).
You could get some nice gear that way - I've got plenty of Raikiries and "of the West" armor before finishing corresponding missions. For better or for worse, fighting revenants is really easy - their AI is no match to the simple poking (single sword middle-stance heavy attack).

I did it, just beat Munashige so I've done every mission and variant in the beta. Did him second attempt this afternoon using only earth katana and some fire spitting mask, lol. Level 47. Run a lot, attack combo/run+attack (always mid stance) and block, almost no dodge.

I feel like when you do a souls boss in ng plus and you are over levelled or something, haha.

Do you get anything meaningful for beating the twilight missions?

I don't know of got it there bit I've one more guardian spirit, plus another one for defeating the fucking samurai. But loot and amrita is much better on twilight missions overall. And you may get some special katana too in the bosses, I think.

Will probably go ahead and delete it. I really just wanted the dlc anyway.

I'm loving this game so far. It feels like a fresh take on the souls formula and I really appreciate it after feeling like DS3, although an excellent game in its own right, felt a bit too much "been there, done that".
Just went from "waiting for the reviews" to "buying day one" after playing the beta.

Just started dealing with this today finally. Fuck this thing is good, but it's hard. It's kind of a faster more polished version of Dark Souls. Fighting enemies can be pretty punishing if you fuck up to. God damn.

Yeah this is awesome, I'm just doing some crazy coop for fun. Thinking of starting from scratch again actually lol.

Managed to beat the second mission. Is there really only 3 restart points in the level or did I miss some, I found:

- The starting point
- The restart point that is reached after traversing the cliffs and almost falling to your doom thanks to a swarm of bats!
- As your descending deeper into the large cave, you can walk off onto a narrow walkway where you fight one Yokai. Beat him and the restart point is right behind where he spawned.

The second level seemed more linear/shorter than the first level, though the bottom of the cave is a killer the first time through (at least I found it hard).

Honestly the boss wouldn't have taken so many tries if it weren't for getting stuck in a stun loop with her. I made so many silly mistakes which cost me dearly. That said, her attacks are well telegraphed and I managed to figure out how to dodge each with few problems so it was only a matter of time before I beat her!

Loving the game. I loved playing through Bloodborne earlier this year and this game feels sorta similar but still does its own thing. Definitely one I want to purchase day 1 now.

God damn. I can't beat the first boss. I got him in the Alpha alright, but I can't seem to do it again. I think last time I had a lightning spear which did a ton of damage, so that's probably the difference. Should I go loot some graves and hope I get something similar?

I'm bad at PvE in Dark Souls period. But this game, I'm just awful. I don't know if I'm underleveled at 9 or have picked the wrong weapons. This game is making me its bitch. But I love it.

It's one of those games that you have to play constantly to get/stay good at. I hadn't played it since the Alpha, obviously, and I was dog shit at it again.

You don't have to grind whatsoever, anymore than you need to grind in Souls games.

Yeah, it seems a little finicky. It was easier in the Alpha.
Huh? No.

because otherwise you wouldn't need to dodge
:)

Its a bit annoying when you miss though. Like with that samurai boss, if you get stunned, you basically have no chance. The stun in those cases just acts like a tease. Although i might be underleveled though.

That feel when you're locked-on to an enemy and still swing in the wrong direction. smh

I used a summon to help me clear the demons. Area is much easier now. I want to summon Morrigan for the boss. Is that possible?

Havnt experienced much of that myself luckily (i use spear as weapon), but only a few times, also on the samurai boss actually =)

It strikes me as the kind of thing that needs to be cleaned up before it hits retail. Is this still scheduled for a 2016 release? Because it's seeming less likely.

I played the beta after really loving the alpha. Maybe I just can't remember anything but other than durability being gone, it seems the same...though more fleshed out from a narrative/worldbuilding perspective. Seems OK to me!

I love it. I want the full game. I hope they don't change anything with the difficulty.

Some of the enemy animations at distance are janky as fuck though.

Biggest changes I felt were the camera, how Williams back is always faced against it when locked on, and ranged weapon controls. I hope they revert the ranged weapon controls but camera was fine, guess they could make it a toggle in options too as there were some people who preferred the old one.
It's definitely shaping up to be a great game, can't wait for it.

This happened all the time in the alpha, but it hasn't happened to me in the beta, or very little. Glad it got fixed, it was infuriating.

It's only happened to me once in the beta, but it's really something when you're locked on to a guy directly in front of you and you swing your weapon directly to your left. XD
