GB/GBC/GBA Collecting Thread

Impulse purchased some Japanese gba games; Guru Logi Champ, Hajime no Ippo and Hatena Satena. Though I'm m a bit worried that the latter could be complicated to learn without any knowledge of Japanese. Is there any good guides for it out there?

Edit: never mind, found one!

Did you order it?

Yeah I'm real curious to hear if this turns out to be good or not. I definitely have seen eBay prices leveling off a little and kits have trickled back at a higher price so I am curious if this is more of the hold stock (not likely), or if someone is making some.

Did we ever determine if the AGB-101 kits that "ran out" a little while back were excess stock, units that didn't make QC, or what? I wonder because I have an AGS-101 with a roughed up shell that I could sacrifice and place into my AGB-101 (or swap them) if it would yield a better picture...

They were a large batch of leftover screens at a factory according to a YouTube video about their origin. Someone bought them all up cheap from the factory, sold them off to modders and other sites (still cheap compared to now). When the supply ran dry, backlit GBA SP prices and modded GBA prices shot up.

If new screens are trickling out, they must be leftover NOS from that previous batch... the occasional one pops up on eBay too. No one makes 240x160 px screens or else backlit modded GBAs would come back down in price by a lot. The closest is the common 320x240 screen like the Revo K101+ uses (their BS claim is it uses a 960x480 screen which makes no sense). It's not ideal.

Used game store here is selling a loose Micro with a black faceplate and charger for 74.99, is that pretty good deal? The faceplate is a bit scuffed but screen itself is in great shape and buttons, d-pad and chassis are all B+

I would go for it. The price of Game Boy Micro keep going up and up.

I have a question. I just got a copy of Castlevania Double Pack off ebay(lol). I opened it up and took a picture of the pcb. Can anyone tell me if it's real. I think it is based off my own google search but it would help if anyone that knows what it looks like check this out. Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I started Aria of Sorrow and it's great so far. I already beat Dawn of Sorrow but never went back to play this.

holes on the pins are in line and not scattered on the actual pins themselves, looks real.

That is something I will keep in mind for my future purchases. Thanks.

Does anyone have a boxed Capcom Classics Mini Mix? I was organizing my shelf and Curiously mine doesn't have the same bottom fold design as my other GB games. It's the same fold over flap design as the top. My only other boxed 2006 release is drill dozer but that looks like all my other games. Is the box fake?

I have a sealed one and it's got the flap like you mentioned. Just checked and a few others in that style are Sigma Star (also sealed,) MMBN Chip Challenge, MMBN 6, and Sonic Advance 2.

Unless those are all fakes as well, but they feel right to me.

Also check the cartridge sticker. If it has two numbers embossed/stamped into the label itself it's definitely legit. For example, Golden Sun: The Lost Age (EUR) has "34" stamped onto the label, Mario Golf: Advance Tour (EUR) has "12", and Mr Driller Ace (JPN) has "11". All stamped in the same font.

Just FYI but none of these "sure things" will be sure things forever. If I was a bootlegger I'd eye threads like this and see what people are looking for.

Embossed characters? Easy to fake.

Better plastic molds? Hard to do but not as hard as you'd think if you're in Shenzhen.

Pin holes? See above.

Opening the cartridge and checking the chips? I think this is the best overall and likely to last the longest, but it wouldn't surprise me to see bootleggers get their hands on more similar flash chips and boards rather than run with messed up BGA->SIMD adapters or glob-tops.

So my friend and I are trying to do a bivert mod on an original game boy using the hand held legend kit, but we're running into some issues. The contrast is amazing, but there are vertical lines on the screen. Not the kind that is completely black like you get when the flat cable is busted, but vertical lines that shimmers with the graphics. Anyone know what the problem is? Did we simply fuck up the screen or is there anything we can do?

I'll post a picture later when I get home.

Edit: Didn't have time yesterday, but here's a picture now:

And here's a video of it in action (~96MB):
https://synt4x.org/random/GB-BL-Problem.mp4

Edit²: So we managed to fix it, and if someone was wondering the problem was a bad solder point under the screen. Just resoldered that and it's better than new. :)

So looking at all the Game Boy mods I decided to try to backlight one for myself. I found a MGB-001 with the DMG look on ebay for about $40 from Japan. It was in great shape although a bit yellowed, though I think that gives it the real Game Boy look. I Also got all the necesary parts from Hand-held Legend.

At first I tried soldering the backlight to the bottom of the Game Boy, close to the capacitor (several tutorial videos do it that way) but the backlight would light up and dim to the rhythm of the music when a game was on, so I switched to the 5V source as seen on this pic. The capacitor is under the electrical tape.

Im very happy with the results. I changed the lens to a glass one, as the plastic one had some small scratches which really annoyed me. it kind of breaks the DMG look but I really like the added weight and shinyness it adds.

Grabbed a sealed European Gradius Advance for 30 euros. Not as precious as its Japanese counterpart, but I'm very happy nonetheless. Can't wait to try it on my GameBoy

Does Darius R come recommended, to someone who'd like to enjoy (and have in his collection) a non-emulated port of the first game in the series? It would be that or nothing, I guess, as I don't own neither a Super Famicom or a PC Engine.

Nice, did you bivert it? I didn't bivert mine and the motion blur drove me nuts so mine's sitting in a drawer :(

Though I'm not sure if the blur is inherent to the GBP's screen...

That version of the game ain't great. There're a couple shmups on the gameboys that share a name with a mainline title, but is pretty well divided. I'm pretty sure that's one of them. I wouldn't swear on it, though. Definitely played it and wasn't terrible impressed, regardless.

^^^ As you say that, it probably is one of them, yeah.
I remember GBA Phalanx and, if I'm not mistaken, R-Type too being pretty lousy, but there was at least another one. And after having found it's not Gradius, I guess it must be Darius.
Shame, as I can't really play the original game anywhere else. :/

I only did the backlight, though I want to try a bivert too. I'm thinking about buying a cheap pocket try it on that motherboard. I don't notice much motion blur on mine though.

Who makes the best first gen GBA with AGS101 screen? Looking to pick up a modded system on ebay but would like a good one.

Hung out with a new friend today and with no warning handed me a minty fresh condition Super Game Boy and Mario Land 2.

Does anyone have recommendations for getting my original Gameboy I just found modded with back light and a better screen? I am hesitant to ship it off to a stranger but I want to bring this beast back to life.

Speaking of the Super Game Boy, is there a compiled list of Game Boy games that support two-player through it? (Like using both SNES controllers for two-player simultaneous.)
