ReCore |OT| Rock Your Core for a Prime Bot

Picked this up on launch and I have to say, even though it certainly isn't all that great, I'm having a lot of fun with it. It feels like a solid and fun budget game on PS2 and as someone who misses those nice little mid-tier games this sits very well with me.

For the most part, I'm enjoying it, but the one dungeon with all the rollers nearly made me shut it off forever. I died in a portion where everytime I respawned I'd get hit again. Died like 60 times in minute until I realized I could dash over to a ledge and try to respawn on a different cycle from the ball.

Further in, I died again, respawned into a ball at the checkpoint, and that knocked me far enough back that I would respawn at the previous checkpoint.

But until then, I was having fun. :D Music is great, load times horrible, but overall I like wandering around seeing what I can climb/jump to.

I still wanna pick this up, but am indeed skeptical

For those who finished it though, did the story ultimately play out well enough? Like, was Staten's contribution noticeable?

thanks!

Oh, I just played that one too I think! Like, instead of respawning you on the checkpoint platform it was respawning on the platform immediately prior, which happened to be one with a rolling ball on it. I even got the same scenario where the unavoidable death sent me back to the previous checkpoint.

Just beat the game. I recommend that if you have Seth wearing the spinner cap and sunglasses to unequip it before beating the final boss. Loved the game and hope there's dlc or a sequel.
- I received a disco ball from the acid marsh dungeon. Anyone know what it does?

Anyone else find it incredibly bizarre that you instantly Respawn upon falling to your death, but have 2 minute loads times dying any other way?

I just....how?

Same happened to me. It's a good game that is actively trying to dissuade me from playing it. How does such a thing even get passed QA?

Location... Problem... Location... Problem... Unresponsive to commands... Bot accessibility... Core fusion... Research blueprints... Fast Travel... Map...

Great post, really hope the Recore pub/dev team will take a look at some of these issues you've outlined. Some other suggestions from folks earlier in the thread, perhaps worth putting into this mix:

...There's no button to restart a dungeon, no pause to retry or start from previous checkpoint or return to the beginning of the dungeon/level. To upgrade a core you have to hold down the A button and wait to put a single point in a stat. You can't turn off the HUD which includes a permanent objective box. You can't see which cores are in what bodies when you're choosing two bots to roll with. You can only choose between bots at fast travel stations (really? we couldn't do this in a menu when we're outside of combat?). You'll get control abruptly taken away from you in a story dungeon while the camera pans over to where you need to go next, even though it proceeds to put an objective marker there anyway...

X1 need better optimization all around and PC need 21:9 support and a built in FPS counter for starters since UWP is locked and few apps can work with it (dxtory).

Haha. Yes! Me and my friend were talking about that the other day. It makes no sense to me. We joked and said just program the game to think you "fell to your death" any time you die from anything. If only programming were that easy, lol.

Falling to your death doesn't reset you back to your last checkpoint, think it just repositions you on the last ledge you were on whereas, dying in combat does reset you so guessing new data has to be loaded in?

So I played through the tutorial area and the map is open now but I'm wondering if I should just stop here and wait for a patch. Aside from the loading times (which are awful) I've also come across a bunch of other issues like the geometry not loading in when I open a door.

Does it look like there is going to be a patch soon?

That seems correct, except the last ledge part can be off since 2 or 3 times I was caught in an infinite death loop in a dungeon because you can be put on a bad piece of terrain. You can also abuse it when doing combat on or near platforms, since you can just jump off when you're at low health and die and you'll be brought back with full health. Enemies will still be there and in the same state.

The world is cool and I loved the personalities of the corebots, but don't play this game for story. There just isn't much there.

I'm kinda surprised at the bugs and glitches people are finding. I'm play maybe 6 hours now, switching between Xbox and PC. Other than long load times and frame rate dips on the Xbox, I haven't encountered any problems. I'm having a blast playing!

That's kind of a shame, I've enjoyed the story elements I've seen so far (just fixed Kai's leg). Audio files are interesting, and character interactions are well-written.

Did we end up hearing any news about how to get the 5th corebot?

I have a feeling it's overworld ability is moving through mud since it's a tank and
there's an area beside Kai's crawler that you can't access because of the mud. And I KNOW it's a playable area because there's a whole bunch of crafting materials floating around

This is about the point that the bugs started showing up more frequently for me. Playing on PC here with a 1070.

There are plenty of things I love about this game. The platforming is fantastic with a great moveset (especially with some of the robot abilities), tight controls and tricky level designs. I love the little robot friends. They have great, fun personalities and being able to upgrade them and swap them around to use different abilities in combat is cool. I think they have done a good job adding side content like all the mini-dungeons.

But then there are so many other things that make the game frustrating. I just really wish we could switch between all our robots/frames at any time while out exploring. With the load times and the focus on late-game exploration, I foresee this making things a hassle for me going forward. I was so lucky with glitches early on too. For probably five hours, I didn't run into any issues. Now I've had issues with floors disappearing or being respawned into instant death (it didn't even make any sense. I missed a platform in the middle of a mini-dungeon and it started repawning me in the rocks way to the side of the dungeon and instantly falling to my death over and over).

I love this sort of game. I wish it had been given more time or whatever it needed to iron out some of these issues. Still enjoying the game so far though.

BeeGee's appear and Staying Alive plays during a Boss fight... :p

Seriously,no clue,I am not far enough yet...I know I will never finish this game because of those platforming sections on a timer,I cant stand a door closing in my face because I ran out of time to reach it...enjoying it for now though, about 3 hours in.

I keep hearing from people that this game is like a throwback to the N64 days. As someone who loved the N64 era and still plays those games, what similarities does ReCore have to these older games? I've found a few things that sound kind of "old school" about it but i'm struggling to see where people are making this connection.

There is story, it's nothing revelatory but works nicely, and I like the characters.

As for changing bots, can do it at waypoint stations so not found it too onerous so far. Enjoying this still, 10+ hours in. No collapse for me.

I haven't gotten so far but I can switch between the two frames I have with the left shoulder button. Does this not expand to let you switch between all 4 or is it always just 2?

Can only have two with you at one time, means I don't keep Mack with me at the moment because I don't want to give up the grappling hook and smashing things to find cores.

But Mack is so adorable when he follows you around :(

It's just two. However, you can switch your corebots with Violet at any fast travel point

As others have mentioned you can only have two at a time. You can switch at Fast Travel points, but you can also switch your cores to different frames eventually (there are more frames than cores where I'm at right now) and unless I'm mistaken you have to go all the way back to the Crawler to do that. While the dog's ability seems less important I really like being able to use different robots in combat (plus its a doggie, I don't want to leave it behind!). I wish you could do this all via the pause menu or with a radial menu or something on left bumper.

But you can't switch the frames. If you don't have a core in the flyer and come across a vent then you'll have to go back to the crawler and swap in a core from one of the other bots. It sucks when you're scavenging for dig sites with Mack and using Seth for the rails and then you happen to come across a vent you could use or a rock you could smash if you had the right bots. I'm finding myself covering the same ground multiple times just because I need different bots.

Yes he is, but the sound he makes when he's getting electrocuted is terrifying.

Up to 53 or so cores now, but I gotta grind to lvl25 in order to get to the last few bits.

One dungeon takes 75 cores. I think I'll save that for later, like whenever we get the fifth core/frame.
For the most part, I'm enjoying it, but the one dungeon with all the rollers nearly made me shut it off forever. I died in a portion where everytime I respawned I'd get hit again. Oh man, there's one dungeon late in the game where it spawned me on a rock that wasn't an actual piece of geometry. Kept falling through the level and it didn't even give me that courtesy deal where it moves you back to a further checkpoint.

Managed to beat the level, but it's clear this game needed way more cooking time.
I still wanna pick this up, but am indeed skeptical

I feel like some of the early banter is snappy in that Halo-ish way, but it's not like there's a lot of story. It's really only a 5 to 6 hour game or so until it turns into a Mario 64 star hunt.

I haven't seen the final bit, but the world is interesting and the main character is likeable. Also, a lot of the story comes from sparse audiologs and they're ok, barring the gibberish ones you keep finding from an unintelligible travel robot.

I'm not sure I'm down to 100%
Armory Flux
. I think I'd have to run it about 30 times before I perfect it.

Long list of issues

I have one that I think it's reproducible as it happened with 2 of my friends (and myself :():

Stopping the game (closing it, or going back to the main screen) in the middle of a mission can cause the game to enter a blocked state: The objective rolls back to the previously one you made, and you can't advance, because you can't complete the objective again, as it's already done, but the game doesn't register than so the next objective is blocked as well.

So far the solution we found was to restart over from the beginning.

Edit:

Another one: On the first mission after you get Seth (the one where you have to add to keys and use the analyzer to check the prismatic cores), there's a room with those big blue balls, a ramp and two floating platforms with a chest on one of them. For me those big balls never show up in that room, I just realized that because my friend send me a video of his blocking bug, and I recognized the room.

Holy fuck, Repository Blitz is some of the worst design I've ever seen.

How in the hell can you break such basic rules in regards to respawns and then not even try to fix it.

Ok, I think I might understand at least one reason why this game got some poor reviews.

It's the E Tower, isn't it? The big ending that you work toward with anticipation and excitement. The place that is literally the worst shit I've came across in the whole game, no exaggeration.

First off, Victor was a let-down. I beat him in about 1 minute flat. That's not a boast, I'm not hardcore, he was just one pathetic boss.

Then I did the first 2 floors of the tower, before putting the controller down for the night.

So the finale of the game is just loads of the worst platforming that I remember from the very worst dungeons, only broken up by combat that is literally just "Throw like a hundred enemies at the player in a really small space that the player can fall off of..." over and over again? Is this seriously how every floor is going to play out? Honest to god, what a let-down this is so far.

And the thing is, I was having a lot of fun with the game until now, a couple of very bad (optional) dungeons aside. But yeah, if this is really it...well, it's very disappointing.

Destructoid posted an article with a vague quote from Microsoft that seemed to imply the Tank was coming as DLC, though no indication of whether free or paid. It isn't clear whether it was an intentional omission or if the Tank was just cut for time/production reasons.

Microsoft terribly needs some lessons on studio and game managments. It's incredible how many launches, games, franchises and sales-potential they fucked up with not giving the necessary budget or time for their games. Also, launching in poor release windows.

You had a completely diffrent take on that end game. To me it was a culmination of taking everything I learned from the game and using it. I think there was a tad bit too much cheap fighting but the platforming I was absolutely loving.

Just did
floor 1, loved it. Tight platformimg, brutal combat: The combat is great Imo, if you combo with Lethals, switching bots, colours, tstgets, it's like a brutal ballet, so exhilarating. Sometimes painful too, aye, but I loved it Also don't think that was the last time we see Victor...perhaps you are further than me though (edit: Ah yes, floor 2 as well) but as it this is a distillation of the great dungeons so far. As for platformimg, only bad thing is some dodgy respawns: The action and the challenge are terrific Imo.

I'm at the Warren boss and have the extractor won't work bug, it grabs him and just stays locked no movement on the line, you have to wait for something to hit you, I waited over 10 minutes when I was on the opposite side of the platform for a rocket to hit me , just looked up a video and it popped right out for him, going to reload and give it another go but i'm done if it doesnt come out , I hooked him 20ish times from different distances trying to get it out and nothing. Fun game, they should have left it in the oven a little longer until it was playable.

...what.

If you're talking about the large room with the giant circular thing, you can get back up fast with the spidertrack. Theres one spider track that moves as you move and should be around where you left off. I dunno how to describe it lol

Finishing up the game. Or at least how much I plan on doing. Not gonna get the true ending. I'd give it a 6-7/10 and that's not really bad IMO. I can't go any lower than that because there are things I actually enjoyed about the game. 5 and below to me is a not so great to bad game. There is something to be salvaged form review. It's OK. At $20 and patched up I'd recommend it.

Yeah I had that same issue. First it appears with the final blue tank. I couldn't extract or destroy it. I restarted the checkpoint and kept going. Got the warren boss to low health and grappled for 5 minutes. Restarted and tried again. Another 5 minutes. Watched a YouTube video. Tried it again. Another 5 minutes until it finally popped out. I think it's that you really gotta let the line go more often than any other extraction

It's after the room with the 3 rows of fire on the floor that move and you have to fight in there...the next room is huge and there's those blue electric fence that turn on and off, plus the one that help you with the dash, with a platform you have to shoot the dome on them to jump on...after another fence, right behind it theres a dash circle again but I have no clue where to go after,I fall all the way down and have to redo all that again...I dont have patience for this shit anymore lol...after trying for 20 minutes I just gave up.

. I have about 80 cores or so and just this dungeon and the one in the starting area and I've pretty much got everything accessible in the game at the moment. I'll go back to Overwatch and wait for Forza on Friday once I get these last two dungeons done.

I thought it might have to do with needing to hit him from a certain angle,I hooked him from the ground floor and the slide thing on the tether just disappears and your stuck to him until you get hit so i'm pretty sure its a glitch and not designed that way.

It did finally come out, I tried hooking him early and it glitched , then I extracted 2 wolves and tried again real close and it popped right out.
