Where is the hype for ps4 pro???

I don't know if it's worth it for 1080p non HDR gaming. I'm really on the fence..

Anyone here with a 1080p TV going to buy it?

Am I looking at the same console...so this is ugly now?

Yeah its not a change from PS4 design, but to say it is ugly is kinda hyperbole

God yes. The original PS4 was already butt ugly, this one is just straight up hideous.

I've pre-ordered a PS4 Pro but one thing confuses me, can I switch my 4K TV output to 1080P and get the bells and whistles rather than a game struggling to run in 4K?

What is hype really? I'm sure sony would rather have it sell well. Sales are the only true measure of actual interest. Hype on message boards doesn't mean much especially when it can be artificially inflated by a small group of fans evangelizing.

I think the marketing flood gates are about to open just like last year. November and December are about to get crazy with bundles and deals.

i think it looks lurvley.

but then i honestly think the Ps4 still has been the nicest designed consoles from sony, if not ever. i dig that aesthetic.

i'd assume it will work like it does now. in settings you set your available resolutions and it auto detects which is best. if you want to force it to go into a specific mode, just set it to 1080p.

Imagine the clusterfuck this is that even in some countries it is advertized as Ps4 HDR instead of Pro, just because the regular consumer would now what is it no?

I personally don't feel anything special about it, even if you have a 4k display. It's just a rushed solution to sell 4k tvs, nothing else.

I can't see how it's ugly, it's basically a rounded off PS4 with an extra level, looks nice and slick personally.

I'm getting one even though I only have a 1080p tv (a very good one mind you). I'm getting the Pro instead of a Slim, as usually replace my original consoles when they bring out a Slim version.

There will be enhancements in for future games, and the down sampling will look nice as well.

I'll get a 4k TV next year when the technology will be even better.

All you guys saying the PS4 Pro is ugly are high or blind, while it's not the best looking console designed it's still not a huge departure from the OG PS4 and I don't remember anyone complains that is ugly.
C'mon people it's a friggin console its rectangular and is slotted, what else do you want? Saying that I really don't buy consoles for sexiness or style but mostly to play games and really don't care what it looks like unless it's a complete disaster and the PRO is far from that.
I'm hyped and my 1080P TV is ready!

No hype for it here because I'm still not sure who this console is for. It seems like a Sony misstep. It only half supports 4K (no UHD discs) yet that's all they've been pushing.

If I'm a tech enthusiast that wants a more powerful system & as a nice-to-have it also is a UHD player - it's not for me.

If I have a 1080p TV only and already own a PS4 - it's not really for me either (my situation). Not paying this much $ for such a minor upgrade.

If I want to HDR + VR, it seems that it also is not for me.

If I already own a PS4 & a gaming PC, definitely not for me (also my situation).

It seems like the idea is very half-baked and not ready for the market. Honestly when the rumors first started happening I assumed it would be what the Scorpio ended up being and launching at-the-earliest next year. Basically this is for someone who wants a minimal power boost, owns a HDR + 4K set already (but doesn't care about discs), either doesn't have a PS4 (good use case) or has enough cash to blow on this (bad use case IMO) and if they care about VR & HDR wants to unhook or rehook their pass through every time they want to use it. Just seems - again - half baked.

Probably a decent choice if you don't even own a PS4 yet, but honestly if I didn't, I'd probably make the jump post-Pro on a slim or cheap OG PS4 instead. If I already did not buy one, it was most likely because of price, not these extra features.

Just my thoughts (not 100% sure on the pass through still being needed for VR, not sure if they said, but if not, then strike one of those points & it makes a good use for someone with that VR kit.)

Had one preordered but cancelled. Only have a 1080p TV and started having buyers remorse already lol.

Will wait to see how it enhances games after a few months and likely by then there will be a Horizon bundle or something

I have a 1080p TV and the lack of 60fps games really soured me on it, that and we barely have any info on other games and their 1080p modes.

I'll definitely still get it, just not at launch.

This is my thinking as well. I would consider it if it played current games at 60fps, but without that, and the very vague 1080p advantages, I probably won't jump in unless my current PS4 breaks. All they had to do was upgrade the CPU instead of just overclocking it so games whose engine is slightly CPU dependent could achieve 60fps.

For example, the pro has around 2.3x the power, but it still cant run the latest tomb raider at a locked 60, they said it was somewhere in the ball-part of 45 - 60fps. This might be because they are increasing the graphics up to ultra or maximum, but everywhere I've seen hasn't said anything about that. So the hype is probably in the same place the CPU it should've had is.

Having said that, the Xbox One has been beating the sales of the PS4 for the past 3 months in some places (can't remember where), so the hype might still be there, just hiding until it actually releases, since a lot of people are obviously waiting for it.

I would get one day 1 if it had 4k blu ray. TBH i'll probably trade up anyway in the hope that games run better on pro, can imagine something like final fantasy 15 being rough in the frame rate department on ps4/xb1

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I think people would be hyped if they could see what is does.
Showing games with standard PS4 graphics or worse but in 4k which no many will use is kinda hard to get hyped about.
We know it can make 1080p games look a lot better but they're not showing it
Rise of the Tomb Raider has those features but nothing has been released showing us the bells and whistles mode.

i don't think it's a console directed at anyone in particular. and never was intended to be. it's a console for those looking to buy a PS4 that can do a little bit extra. sony probably realised that could source some better tech for the same price they were paying before and sell it at a profit, just like before. so why not. they then released the slim to lower the point of entry so more people can jump in if they don't want to spend more...

i see PRO as what it is... it's a phone upgrade. do people really NEED an iphone 7 if they have an iphone 6? is the iphone 7 really directed at anyone specifically? no. it's just the new model of a bit of tech that people might want if they're looking to buy an iphone. some people may find enough value in the additions of the new model to upgrade. some may be happy for another 2 years with the iphone 6.

it isn't a new generation. it's the equivalent of a car manufacturer selling a GTi version of an existing car.

It's aaaaalways the same. With the PS4 Slim, at the first leaks, everybody was "omg, it's ugly af, no way it's real" and even after the reveal "omg it looks like shit", and when time passes, "oh that's a sexy looking console"...

It's be same for the Pro.

Well and after all, it's a matter of taste.

Games looking a little nicer isn't enough for me to justify paying $400 as I don't have or plan on buying a 4k tv anytime soon.

I am very skeptical about buying a Pro (check my post in previous page) but I disagree with you on this.

Console users like graphics. They might not be as hardcore for the absolute best, but ofcourse and they do care about graphics to a large extend. They also like convenience, exclusive deals and other stuff. But visuals will always captivate most gamers.
I don't think the majority of console users like graphics enough to respend $400 on a console that plays games they can already play on a console they already own.

Also, I feel like recent history shows that hardware power doesn't matter all that much to the general public when they're making their console buying decisions.

PS5 won't do that either.
It will for sure. If Xbox Scorpio is to use AMD Zen then by the time PS5 releases it will also use a proper CPU like AMD Zen but an even newer boosted version likely.
What this gen consoles has currently are weak slow tablet CPU's so when we get capable CPU's finally you will see 60fps

Yeah I need that new PS4 Pro because of two handful of games which get upgraded at the moment. If there would be more ala "Bloodborne patch incoming, Witcher 3 improvements" etc. and more good games confirmed for Pro patches, then I would need that console, but otherwise I don't give a thought about that thing, because I don't even have a 4k display.

That's fine. Everybody can decide that for themselves. I just want to tell why i buy it.
And every game from now on will have those enhancements i think.
I also hope some older ones will get a patch.
I'm not telling anyone to buy it.

I think there will be far more games looking really good at 1080P on the Pro than there will be AAA games looking great and running well in 4K. In 1080P they can run the game with more bells and whistles and downsampled for a really clean image quality. In 4K i think they'll just struggle for the most part. It's not a real 4K machine for big games. Some smaller games will be true 4K. But i'm not buying a 4K screen for a while.

I'd sooner buy one for 1080P enhancements than for 4K.

The fact that the (pro) does almost nothing to work better with PSVR - that having the latest and greatest devices in the Playstation hardware ecosystem actually creates a hassle (like the loss of HDR via the HDMI passthrough), really killed the hype for the (pro) for me and makes a combo of slim+psvr a much more reasonable package, and makes me yearn for a Playstation iteration that was built with the VR headset in mind (built in breakout-box)

the only thing the PS4 pro really contributes for VR is the extra USB port on the back...

My quote doesnt say anything different than that... it simply states that console users are not indifferent in graphics, anyone who would suggest that, just needs to go through the console screenshot threads or the countless topics discussing console graphics.

And for the record this isnt a thing comparable to XB1-PS4, Pro has way more juice than PS4 in analogy.

Your first paragraph i agree, if the visual upgrade is small, even more so. Pro is not aimed at a big portion of PS4's user base.. Indeed games would play great in both consoles and no exclusives are lost. On the other hand the visual gains could be big enough to merit the upgrade for some poeple. Certainly this isnt aimed at the mainstream console audience out there, but more at the "hardcore" console audience out there if I can use those terms.

Some people have also invested in 4K so for them the leap is huge. There is a market for the Pro already. What we dont know is how large it is. Thats up to Sony. I dont think it will be a big one, but it could be significant maybe.

If they show me a crystal clear / perfect IQ / locked framerate with added bells and whistles FFXV that looks clearly improved in 1080p, I certainly will be interested in investing to Pro.

To be fair, you're referencing a video game enthusiasts forum. We are more inclined to discuss these things. Most people who buy consoles don't pay nearly as much attention to graphics or hardware capabilites. I don't think your average console owner cares that much about graphics. Like you said, the Pro is very much an enthusiasts thing, which is why you're not seeing much hype about it.

All of the physical games I own, save for Shadow of Mordor, would receive no pro upgrade. That and I still hate the controller. I was hoping for a revamped controller and a console that would automatically make my old games look and run better.

Maybe that's asking for too much. My PS4 is an exclusive box at this point. And I'm OK with that.

I don't own a PS4 yet, I'm getting one to go with the last guardian for my wife to play on our 4K TV.

That said, I'm still not 'hyped' for it... This gen has been a pretty big let down for me. If it wasn't for my wife waiting since SotC for a 'sequel' to come out, I'd probably skip out on PS4 altogether.

A thing that will only offer a marginal improvement over a much cheaper console launched 3 years ago

no UHD blu-ray

Where are you getting this information? We've heard from multiple sources that PSVR will leverage the power of the PS4 Pro in a member of ways, especially in increasing resolution and reducing aliasing. These are two major enhancements to the experience.

Are there more pics of the system that are not press ones? More of like real world shots?

Took the picture when I was at tokyo game show with my phone, did not bother taking more due to the reflections on the glass which ruins the image of the playstation.

So true.

It's not a bad design, but the choice of materials and finish is unfortunate.

It doesn't look high-end compared to the launch PS4, and since they're expecting early adopters to upgrade, it really should.

I could give it a pass if it was like the Slim, but the extra tower looks so bad.

OG PS4 (the second version) is still the best looking version IMO.

Anyways, I'm not interested in Pro. I just don't see reasons to waste that much money for what it offers to me.

I don't care. The only way I would have been interested is if the 30 FPS games got a mandatory 60 FPS option. If my PS4 die, I'll take the Slim.

There's been nothing but vagueries in terms of what modes are actually going to be supported im predicting a free for all mess where some titles optimise and others will run with no discernible differences.

I'll begrudgingly get one when Persona 5 comes out.

Do we know how tall the Pro is?

My OG PS4 just barely fits directly under my TV (Visio P Series), and I was hoping to put the Pro in the same place. Is it taller than the original PS4?

I'm pretty hyped for it. I sold my launch model to my younger brother for $200 and paid off the difference on Amazon already.

Not sure that is the case really. Especially if more people follow Tomb Raider's example of giving 1080p owners locked framerates and more graphical features or 1080p and unlocked framerates. Supersampling alone is worth it.
I mean not really, that's why there's not an avalanche of hype. It remains to be seen if Scorpio fares any better but my guess is no: until it's a proper new console with proper new games then the appeal is always going to be more niche. Paying the price of a new console for the same games but prettier doesn't make people dizzy with excitement.

I plan on picking on up to replace my launch model, though I'm undecided as to whether I pick one up on launch or wait a bit. I own a 4K TV (though it's not an HDR compatible set - the downfall of being an early adopter) so while the Pro is a nice upgrade, it's just not the full package upgrade. As everyone's already said, I wish this thing came with a UHD blu-ray drive, as for me it put a real damper on the announcement (though it did lead me to pick up a Xbox One S which I'm loving).

I'm looking forward to seeing what Digital Foundry make of the Pro, if the impressions are good I may just bite next month.

A couple of my current game are going to be upgraded to work with the Pro (Shadow of Mordor and The Witness) but I'm mainly getting the PS4 Pro for FF XV, Horizon, The Last Guardian, God of War and Naughty Dog's next game. To me personally, those experiences deserve and need to be experienced on better hardware that will make them prettier and more stable even at 1080p, as I don't have a 4K TV and don't plan on buying one until later next year.

Also, I sold my August 2014 500GB OG PS4 for 200 pounds, which was in great condition and the price I got for it was pretty decent. All in all I'm happy about my decision and very much looking forward to playing games on the new console.

I mean let us be honest here. The PS4 pro has some cool features, however the biggest problem that is killing the hype is the fact it does not push any previous owners to re buy it. VR means nothing to me, the 4K HD does not mean anything either. I do not feel the need to upgrade my TV. Why should I rebuy if it's new bells are really items I couldn't care less about? Sony needs to get me to care about its newest product and truth be told, I don't think they can unless they put out a new machine that's called PS5.

This is coming from an individual who has access to 3 PS4s.

PS4 pro almost as ugly as PS3 super slim. Still I will trade my launch PS4 for it but no UHD player and continues game delays might make me start looking at Scorpio or PC.

It's just a bigger, more power hungry PS4 with few enhancements only good for a niche and I ain't in that niche.
Games drive hype but they managed to postpone most of them, go figure.

Actually, it looks a lot like the regular PS3 Slim, especially considering the materials used.

Why would game delays be a bad thing? They make games better!
