On the other hand, you need to think about why it was set on wait mode by default : You guessed it, WoFF is targeting a younger audience who wants to be introduced to Final Fantasy, so actually a casual market first and foremost. So if I would give anyone here who are not feeling it right now or would want to try this demo for the first time, give yourself a treat, and start the game in Active mode + fastest battle speed + UI Classic mode.
That's interesting, feels like it's on entirely the wrong formats for that to be fulfilled though -- at least in Japan.
I love the finer details in the monsters. Tonberry has to be my favorite. He has this ridiculously deep voice and he sounds like reaper from overwatch when he talks. Also, when he pulls his knife attack, the juxtaposition between the limp wrist movement and the earth shattering camera shake makes me laugh my ass off.
Out of curiosity, why preorder?
I don't get preordering unless it's ultra limited, you are pre-loading or there is a really good preorder bonus.
For the digital version, there is a really good reason to pre-order: Japanese DLC Voice Packs, Sephiroth Summon, and a really, really good Dynamic PSN Theme:

I'm not seeing the dynamic part of the theme, am I missing something?
Yeah, well, it was a formal request from Hashimoto to make a game targeted to kids who wants to discover final fantasy and their characters, so you can tell from the start why they choose this art style (chibi), and a fairly simplistic battle system over a more mature one.
As soon as I saw the TOSE logo I was like oh no I hope this doesn't play like some half-assed port. After playing through the demo it seems like my fears are more or less confirmed
Not sure if asked before.
How do you heal the mirages, the ones that are required to capture?
Also how to catch fenrir? When I Libra nothing showed up.
They chose this "art style" to cross-sell toys, figures, and plushes.
It's almost as bad as Funko POP figures with how generic they are, they just have anime eyes instead of making them soulless black dots.
Fenrir has a Mandragora on top. Topple them and then you can catch both of them. Also how to catch fenrir? When I Libra nothing showed up.
So I was wondering about this game for a while. Played and explored the demo and this is what I got out of it.
Fully aware that it's a demo and might not represent the totality of it. So here we go.
Stacking system is interesting taking into consideration it ties with the stackable's skills.
The chibi characters are somehow cute and they do transpire their originals upon some lines of dialogue.
The combat system directional menu is limited so better go with the classic menu.
Combat felt sluggish but thanks for having the speed option in the menu and the turbo on the bumper.
Sound wise oh boy that breaking glass became torture after 4 or 5 fights.
Dungeon design let's to be desired: empty, rince and repeat, why I can't go into those tents?
The libra and capture system is fun. Go catch them all.
Riding is cool.
All in all without the story the demo felt boring.
My conclusion WoFF showed us a dungeon demo (call it a menu exploration and combat system demo) that does not comply with my standards. Will need to see if story is good.

How do you topple enemies, I want this fenrir before i move on.
I never found Vivi so I didn't hear his voice but I raised an eyebrow when Edgar spoke. Just not the voice I'd imagined in my head over twenty years ago.
Same here. I remember I thought exactly the same in Kingdom Hearts 2.
Some characters like Vivi should never be dubbed.
You're not. I misspoke. It's just a really good theme
It's interesting that you say that, because I live in Canada, and when I played the demo, there was no dub when talking to FF characters.,.
Huh?
I'm in Canada too and pretty much all the characters I came across in the demo were voiced.
Vita NA demo coming Friday according to SE.

I believe you can turn off voices in the options.Yes. Actually i wished in this game, the character voices was completeply muted. The voices are so forced high pitch it makes me want to punch my ears. I wonder how the japanese voices are compared to the english ones.
There is a couple out there. Gameinformer gave it an 8.25. Liking it but saying the story was awful. That has me the most worried. Though I'm still getting it on day 1.
It's a FF for kids. The intention behind this game is to bring the younger audiences into FF.
I don't know what people are expecting out of a story for kids, it's obviously not going to be Game of Thrones.
Hell, the story is probably just an excuse for the journey. What matters are the characters, their interactions, cuteness, and goofiness, and the sense of wonder from being in fantasy realms.
so i played the demo and basically never used the chibi versions in battle since it seemed there was no real reason to?
So I played the demo first on wait mode (by default, like anyone else), and then after I played on Active mode, so I would want to give my impression after having played both.
Wait mode : By default, you get that + normal battle speed when you start the demo. My time with the combat system was fairly easy. I could take whatever the time to think about my strategy, although they were simplistic choices, I had all the time to focus on what to attack/cast next. Overall, it was ridiculously slow and easy. It let a bitter taste in my mouth when I finished the demo (like, was I the target audience or what?). The battle UI was different but interesting, although I liked to be able to use shortcuts to cast spells and abilities quickly (that you can define in the main menu beforehand)
Active mode : Now, what I did is that I went straight away in the option menu from the main menu and I selected : Battle speed - 5, Active Mode and Classic UI and I started the demo. Now, the experience changed a lot for me (and in a good way), not only because the battle UI was far more enjoyable to browse, but because the monsters didn't wait for their turn to attack me, like a real ATB system. I can say that at the beginning, I struggled a lot in front of those tonberries and mandragora, just because you need to think quickly before getting attacked from all corner by Knife Tonberry's OP attack. I sensed overall that this batte mode + fast battle speed is the way to go if you want a fairly challenging experience in the full game.

I see nothing about WoFF that targets a younger audience... if anything, it targets older FF fans who love the characters and old-school style of play.
Chibby =/= young audience
It very much does target a younger audience, that was the main intention behind the project.
That might be what they say, but I find it has much more appeal to hard-core FF fans.

Yep I'm 32yo and I'll buy this because I love the old turn based with random encounters. That might be what they say, but I find it has much more appeal to hard-core FF fans.

This demo could really use some type of tutorial. Even the UX is completely not intuitive unless you switch it to Classic.
Yeah, I think so, too. Personally, I tend to avoid demos for mostly this reason--as a bad demo can give me a bad impression of an actually good game--but I want the bonus Magitek Armor skin.Agreed, I feel they just explain a few mechanics, while forgotting some very important others ones.
I heard in an interview last month that when they were asked if there was a demo, they said they "had" an idea of what it could be, but should decide fast to release it before the game released. Yes, I said last month So I feel mostly that this demo was either not good or just rushed to us, without thinking about some form of proper tutorial.
Or maybe, better : I think this demo was the one showcased at different events, but was the kind of demo that you need to have a SE representative next to you if you want to ask some questions about the gameplay, thus only had a few barebone tutorial at the beginning, and then nothing after that.
