‘The Walking Dead’ – Season 7, Part 1 – Sundays on AMC

It's the whole Walking Dead story. It's never ending, and this cycle of finding a new place, meeting bad people, surviving, shit hitting the fan, and finding a new place is not exciting anymore.

I kind of agree with you, but i have to admit that Negan has sparked my interest for the show, because he is just on such a different level than all the previous villains.

After him though, i think it's almost impossible to repeat the cycle again and stay fresh. Because i just don't see how you can top this level of violence, and not make it feel forced or borderline ridiculous.

For now, Negan makes me glad i stuck with the show. The Walking Dead was never on the top of my list of all the shows i watch, because of the repetitive cycle you mention. Untill last season i was on the brink of abandoning the show all together.

On another note, am I the only one who finds the time this show is aired very irresponsible?

And on the same note, the show doesnt allow the use of the "f" word and wont display nudity, but its totally fine portraying violence the way it does? What kind of fucking logic is this?

Dont worry I felt the same way.... I didnt enjoy the premiere at all and unfortunately I know I am in the minority. While I had no idea that was going to happen and impressed they actually went for it like that without any real warning that was really the only highlight. The rest of the show was dull and boring in my opinion...

Really? The nerve...

What is irresponsible? It's on at 9pm on a sunday. Not like it's on at 5 when the kids might be watching.

In my opinion they try way too hard to "shock" and it ends up with the complete opposite reaction (at least for me).

While watching this episode I suddenly found myself entering a B movie/splatter mood and I just started imagining scenes that made me chuckle like for example:
Maggie hugging Glen's meat pulp at the end
sounds like a coping mechanism to me :p

You are trying to tell me that it is completely unheard of for families to stay up 8/9 pm on a sunday to watch TV? Really?

Also the second part of my post is completely ignored and based on what you said about the air time, makes it even more puzzling why they choose to censor these things.

I wouldn't blame AMC as much as I'd blame certain advertisers. They are the ones that will set the limits in the end. I agree that it's a silly american thing where violence is OK to people and nudity/language isn't.

And 9pm is definitely primetime but that's the whole point. This shows main demographic is 18-49 and that's the best time for them. If it were any later it would be on way too late.

Exactly. So we basically agree. Ofcourse and prime time is the reason why they show it, since it makes more money. But it is not content that should be aired imo in these times. Also, this makes it all the more ironic that the show censors nudity and profanity at 8/9 pm, but
watching people get their skull beat to a pulp
is ok at the same time...

AMC is a cable network. People pay to have it, it isn't available over the air like the Big 4 networks so not just anyone can access it. It would be like complaining to your internet provider that pornography exists. V chips and parental blocks have existed for going on 20 years. If a parent doesn't want the show to be available on their child's TV they could not buy cable or set parental blocks OR pay attention to what their kids are watching. What difference does the time that they show it matter? They do all day marathons with no edits so the show has literally been on at every hour of the day.

Y'all also don't need spoil events that have occurred on the show.

I mean if we want to discuss why advertisers care more about sexual content than violence, that's interesting. But the time the show comes on is the time it comes on. If kids can see it at 8pm, they can see it at 9pm, etc. It's available online via their website with cable credentials.

What you describe makes sense about it being a network that is subject to parental control. I admit I had no idea this was a cable network, I am not a US resident, so completely understood now. And thanks taking the time to explain it in a polite manner.

But for the censorship thing.... why? It still doesnt make sense to me. Even canonically it doesnt feel right for the universe itself. Not a single fuck uttered after all these things and yet violence is rampant. I dont get it.

America is weird about sex. I guess that's the best explanation I could give. The media is simultaneously obsessed with and scared of sex. I think sometimes there is the feeling that explicit depictions of sex cheapen a show. It's something that Game of Thrones gets excused of on a regular basis.

I never really thought about the language too much, honestly. Well, except for the Season 4 finale when they were all trapped in that box.

I agree with you though, it makes no sense. It's not something I really think about anymore but it's odd how restrained the show is in some regards but then goes all out on others. It's almost childish in some regards, especially in the early years but then we're now dealing with graphic depictions of violence against humans now. It exists in a really weird space

Very Minor Comic Spoiler

Negan swears pretty liberally and creatively so I do wonder how they'll work around that. But they seemed to have gotten the spirit of the character across. Lots of people were saying he was charismatic.

Game of Thrones got raked across the coals for the sex/nudity...even when it paled in comparison to the books. A damn shame as well.

yet it's the biggest tv show in the world...

so fuck the complainers. with how desensitized we are becoming as a culture (kids can easily access isis beheading videos and all kinds of different youtube-like porn sites as soon as they get their first smart phone) I REALLY hope the whole taboo on "fuck" and nudity in TV shows that display graphic violence can come to an end soon.

i'd love to meet the people that were ok with negan popping glen's eye out, yet would have been terribly offended if he threw a couple "fucks" in there.

Agreed.

There was strong racial overtones in the comics, too. I don't think TV fans would love Michonne half as much if her character was identical to the books.
I hated the way Kirkman wrote Michonne. It's a huge reason why I stopped reading the comics. I'm so glad the TV show has done a much better job with that.

Well while I'm not current with the latest issues of the comics I can say from what I've read they take things in a bit of a different direction after this. They don't just go "but look now there's an even crazier guy!"

It was terrible to watch Glenn suffers like this... Still, I am less shocked than when I read the comics a few years ago since I was expecting it. It did renew my hate for Neegan, fuck him.

Opposite for me here, I actually think his death on the show was more shocking. Obviously the comic was more graphic, but I read/caught up to that point fairly quickly so I wasn't as attached to Glenn. I've been watching Steven Yuen play his character for 6 years, he was my favorite since his first appearance (I had yet to read the comics at that point).

I was obviously expecting the death, but it just feels sad knowing this character who I've seen grow/mature for 6 years now will never be in the show again.

Watched all but the last 5-10 minutes of the episode, will finish it tonight. It was a great episode, but yeah my interest in the show unfortunately is still under the I don't give a fuck category after the lamest cliffhanger I can remember in years. Since they killed two people, I still don't understand why Glenn wasn't saved for the premiere.

Got to say really nice touch by Daryl being an idiot and getting Glenn killed though. I'd imagine that will spring some tension between him and Maggie, and some self pity/hatred on his part.

How has Glenn grown / matured? He endured some scrapes. That was about it. The show barely strings together character arcs. Glenn was barely a character. Like most of the cast that aren't Rick, he just sort of hung around in front of the camera killing zombies sometimes. The only plots are whether the characters agree with or disobey one another. Glenn only existed in the show to be in a relationship with Maggie. He didn't have opinions, a back story, a stance.

If his death had come out of the blue earlier last year, following some focus, development, then it would have been shocking, but the cynical producers of this trash-tier show spent 8 episodes building up and destroying what was an effective shock in the comics.

Yeah I mean even knowing for this long what was coming, I'm far more attached to Yeun as Glenn than I ever was to his comic counterpart. The comic scene was shocking and horrible mostly because of it being a completely random murder and the extremely graphic way it was depicted. You have that in the show obviously, but we had also just lost Abe in the same horrible way, plus it's Steven Yeun portraying Glenn's horrible death very convincingly. The rest of the cast also did pretty good selling it despite being on their knees unable to speak for most of the episode.

All other context aside I wouldn't say one version is particularly better than the other, but it's basically the most iconic moment of the comics for a lot of fans and I think they got that across in the show. Everyone will remember this one for years to come instead of how most major deaths are talked about for a bit and then eventually it just goes away.

How so? I have an 8 year old, and he's not allowed to watch the show. What does the time it airs have anything to do with that? Also, there are strong warnings after each commercial break. I don't expect my tv to raise my kid for me, and I appreciate having shows that present things I can handle as an adult.

I can't wrap my head around how upset some people are about the violence. It's a god damn zombie show.

I didn't see Glenn's death as Daryl's fault, but just another random one. The way he did it, made it seem like 2 were gonna get killed anyway.
Based on punching Negan alone, the second death should have been Daryl. Who else would have been as strong as Abraham without going for Rick?

I'm sure Daryl thought he would have to take responsibility for lashing out. I'd bet most of the crew were just as close to doing what Daryl did, thinking they'd just have to pay the price. None of them knew Negan enough yet to know that he wouldn't just kill someone for acting out of turn, hed put another random death on their hands instead.

Gotta remember that Tara isn't even back at Alexandria. She's went out on that 2 week run with Heath. After Rick and the group took out the savior outpost.

Aren't Carol and Morgan still there?
No, Carol had left Alexandria and Morgan went after her. He ended up killing that savior to save Carol. Last we saw them was the armored dudes on horses coming up and talking to Morgan.

Completely agreed. His character hasn't evolved a single bit since S3. He's been arguably the worst character on the show for the past 3 seasons, so I say good riddance. I've never understood the lovefest for him.

Negan and Daryl are my bros now.

He evolved very little, mainly the finally killing a person in S6E3, when they raid the compound and he was with Heath. They did forshadow his death there because he was looking at the photos of the skull being beaten in by Negan. They could have had numerous times to have Private time between him and Maggie, especially about talking about Enid and Nicholas.

I instantly thought of Ash vs Evil Dead (I had watched earlier that day) - which all the gore is over the top but done for comedic effect.. Especially with the blood splatter (none on Negan) and showing eye-popping Glen and the bloody pulp...

Sure, but it's definitely done in a different way than just making a more over the top character than Negan. I agree though. I have a feeling when the show hits that point we're going to see the most departures from the source material yet.

I don't get it either. Showing people getting beaten to a pulp is fine but saying 'fuck' is a no-no.

Probably has to do with advertising money.
Considering how insanely brutal last episode was it really is hilarious. Wonder if the US will ever make a change in that regard.

What I dislike most about this show is its enormous emphasis on the inter-human struggle between opposing factions and not on the zombies themselves. The zombies are simply cannon fodder and serve no other purpose than to create a false sense of suspense and anxiety. I'd actually be willing to invest time in this show again if a new strain appeared that created more menacing and dangerous walkers. I can only appreciate so much of humans duking it out with other humans before it becomes stale, and boy oh boy has it become so.

I will give credit where credit is due with Negan being that he is one of the most terrifying characters I've seen on television, so I will return to this show just to see how this pans out. After this arc ends I fully expect the show to find another human antagonist to replace Negan and either fall short of matching his caliber or grossly outperform him, and that's simply not interesting anymore. Had this show struck a balance from the beginning between more powerful foes in the form of both walkers and humans, then I'd appreciate the inter-human conflicts more, but as it stands it's played out and damn annoying.

This is an unusual opinion of mine because normally I prefer inter-human conflicts in apocalyptic settings, but The Walking Dead has really outdone itself in making it boring and uneventful.

Comic spoilers:
It might not be the whisperers but part of all the zombies in front of the sanctuary. They had a whole bunch of alive and dead walkers covering the front and some were only heads on poles. Definitely could still be the whisperers cause like you pointed out they always tease groups before they appear. But I honestly don't expect anything from the whisperers for a while. Would be cool tho if it was just a random thing someone from Rick's group saw. Show that the whisperers are somewhere out there.

Oh, yeah no big deal about the spoilering thing.

Your plan could have worked but it doesn't seem like it would have been a realistic thought that would have crossed most people's mind. Again, based on the story of the 16 year old at hill top who got his head bashed in, they already conceived a notion that Negan was life-threatening to at least one of their own.

Realistically, your idea just isn't how people think. Historically, even small nations become defensive against larger nations trying to usurp them. It's against human nature to not do anything to ward off the threat to your life. It just isn't

I'm not saying Rick's plan was perfect. I don't know if there was a perfect plan. His plan, given their situation, given their past, given their lack of food, was reasonable for their world. There are other reasonable ideas. Maybe some that might have worked better, but the idea they ultimately went with was reasonable given the nature of the new world.

Good post, I missed this. Historically, people wouldn't just rush in blindly without understanding/knowing who they're attacking, though, so it goes both ways. I get that in that situation maybe it wouldn't have been super realistic to devise a plan like this, mainly because they didn't know who they were dealing with.. which kind of goes back to my original point of.. Rick shouldn't have pushed his people blindly into a battle with a completely unknown opposition. Of all things Rick and co. COULD have done, I think they chose one of the most reckless, if not most, options. And they payed the price. Part of this decision comes from Rick being top dog for so long and I do think his ego got in the way of being able to properly formulate an effective plan (which rubbed off on Maggie too). It was more like "let's go kill these motherfuckers" instead of "let's scout this thing out and collect more intel before we make a decision". And I think a lot of the the decision Rick made rooted from both ego and arrogance. This was displayed multiple times leading up to the encounter with Negan, such as Rick shooting blindly at someone he didn't even know (with Morgan) and killing the dude they captured immediately instead of questioning him.. among a laundry list of other examples.

Much of where we are now is because of Rick's blind arrogance. You can be DAMN sure he won't rush in recklessly again.

To be fair they've had some legitimate zombie threats here and there. Most recent one being the huge zombie herd or whatever happened that resulted in Carl losing his eye, and I'm sure the show will bring another zombie scare after the Neegan arc as some kind of buffer again. In terms of a new strain of some sort yea, that'd be cool.

I disagree. I found
alpha to be pretty lackluster. I mean Negan broke through her thin emotional barrier and despatched her pretty easily once he arrived.
