If you could only have one system between PS1, N64 and Saturn...

PS1 by far.
I had all 3 back then and PS1 definitely gave me the most amazing time. So many great games, now classics and new genres.

PS1 has one of the greatest libraries of RPG's ever, so on that alone I have to choose it. N64 had a ton great titles too though.

[*]Aidyn Chronicles (Screw the haters!)

Oh my god, I've been trying to remember the name of that game for years. I was promised RPG goodness on a near RPGless console and I was given nothing but irritation.

glad you enjoyed it, should give it another look

N64.

90% of the 'good' ps1 games are unplayable now. Those controls aged horrendously.
N64 games have aged graphically, but still control well.

I had a N64 growing up, but we were poor so I could only get bargain bin games. Even though I have more nostalgia for the N64 I'd pick the PS1 cause N64 games now are too expensive to collect for.

This is going to sound a little cheesy, but after reading so many of the responses it reminded me... In reality you can have them all. For those of you that picked PS1, grab a Saturn and a modchip. If you picked N64 and never had a PS1, go grab a PS1.

Seriously, the only thing that I can think of that would be cooler than going back and playing my favorite PS1 games is... playing some Saturn games I've never tried before. Or an N64 classic that I missed.

So as a bit of a collector I have all 3 and will share a few recs--

N64 - Get an RGB modded one and a framemeister. Seriously. Sure framerates are low on N64 games, but replaying Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart on a huge HDTV without blur is fantastic. Consider an Everdrive.

Saturn - Get a cheap Saturn and a modchip. Easy install. And don't feel bad about it. The games are insanely, insanely expensive at this point, and buying them on ebay does nothing for the developer. Radiant Silvergun is sublime. Castlevania SOTN is, though not as good as the PS1 version, an extremely fun playthrough if you've beaten PS1 SOTN to death like I have. New playable character, new areas... and you get to listen to the cutscenes in Japanese which makes it all the more awesome. And classics like Daytona, Virtua Fighter... Get an Action Replay so you can play Marvel and X-Men... Darkstalkers. The system is awesome.

PS1 - If you were an N64 or Saturn person and never had a PS1... seriously, get a PS1 now. Castlevania SOTN. FF7. Hell even MK3, Rage Racer... Classic after classic. If you never played the PS1 library, it stands the test of time for sure. Metal Gear Solid. Silent Hill. So, so good. Even better, you can play everything PS1 on a PS2 or PS3 so you have no excuse... Do it!

I disagree about N64 controls. A lot of games control fine, but there are still plenty of titles that suffer from serious framerate issues, which hampers playability just as much as control scheme.

Even better, you can play everything PS1 on a PS2 or PS3 so you have no excuse... Do it!

Unfortunately, that's not entirely accurate for the PS3. There are some games that suffer from emulation issues, such as MediEvil 2. They're few and far between AFAIK, but it's still disappointing.

Ps1, of course ! Nothing can beat the Suikoden 2 + Final Fantasy 7+ Valkyrie Profile is the best combination ever !

Saturn would be my second choice because:
-Waku Waku 7;
-Sexy Parodius;
-Albert Odissey Gaiden;
-Shining Force 3;
-Shining the Holy Ark;
-Grandia;
-Lunar,
-Sakura Taisen;
-Dragon Force;
-Panzer Dragon;
-Sega/SNK fighting games;

I'd choose the Saturn, because I'm totally unfamiliar with it and I know it has a library worth checking out. New experiences trump nostalgia for me, especially since I've already replayed my favorite N64 and PSX games too many times.

Between the N64 and PSX, though, I'd go with PSX. It's just an embarrassment of riches on that platform.

I was certainly jelly of Super Mario 64 and (a couple of other games) as s PSX owner, but with the added perspective of not being 12 years old anymore it's not even a question.

Software library is king.

I feel bad for the poor bastards who fell for 3DO.

I had a lot of fun with my 3DO back in the mid-90s and never regretted the $400 I plunked down for it. Best version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo around at the time. Star Control II was amazing, as was Road Rash. Those three games alone made it worth it for me. It didn't have a lot of great games, but it was a fun niche system at the time.

Fuck. I know what '97 me would have picked in an instant (Saturn), but as I have less people around me who play fighting games anymore...

PS1. All of those JRPGs. The N64 had four amazing games.

I feel bad for the poor bastards who fell for 3DO.

Me too. I paid $500 for a system that allowed me to play a total of four games: SSF2T, Return Fire, Alone in the Dark and Star Control 2. Was almost worth the price for SSF2T though.

In this odd reality where I'd have no other means of playing a good chunk of CPS2/MVS fighters beyond those three (well, two really) consoles, I'd pick Saturn in a heartbeat. Sorry, RE.

Easy choice for me. Saturn. I loved the games back then (especially the JP ones) and I still play them now.

I played psx games back then too, but rarely play any now. N64 only has a few games of interest since I didn't own one back then. (Only Saturn/psx)

Impossible choice.
It comes down to Saturn's Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garrega, Soukygurentai, and Panzer Dragoons.
vs
PS1's Metal Gear Solid, Vagrant Story, FF Tactics, Strider2, SilentHill, and Dragon Quest VII.

I couldnt do without either set.

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
If we are still talking about this it would be N64 with no question for me.

Mario 64
Goldeneye
Mario Kart 64
Blast Corps
Zelda OoT
Killer Instinct
Star Fox 64
Wave Race 64

Also I have never touched a PS1 in my life, so I have no knowledge of it.

Sega Saturn without even blinking.

Still have it hooked up on the 65" plasma alongside the Dreamcast as well as the PS4, Wii U, PS3 and 360.
It was the home arcade system to have back then and it's still hard to beat till this day.

PlayStation! :)

Metal Gear Solid (my fav), Gran Tourismo series, Wipeout series, Tekken series, Resriden Evil series, Silent Hill,Tenchu, Medal of Honor, Syphon Filter, Soul Calibre, SF Alpha series, PES series, FFVIII, Soul Reaver and the list goes on.

I must add that when I bought my PS the N64 just came out. First time I saw Mario64 I regretted my PS purchase for a moment for a few days, but that regret soon turned into the right choise.

N64 had great games as well.
Mario64, Mario Kart64, Zelda OoT, KI2, GoldenEye

Believe me, I fully understand why the game gets the reputation it has; it deserves it, even! But I primarily enjoy games for their content and world building/interactivity, more so than just gameplay, much less graphics, and Aidyn Chronicles does some interesting things with it's world and characters. Plus, I'm a sucker for the kind of customization it offers in it's character development. Further, I had played through Quest 64 prior, so I didn't have as negative a reaction to it's combat system as I suspect many others did.

Easiest question ever, the Saturn is one of the greatest consoles of all time. I would take it for sure over the other 2 mentioned.

Saturn.

Had it not been for Shining the Holy Ark, I might not be here today. Honourable mentions to NiGHTS into Dreams and Shining Force III.

Saturn.

It's somewhat close, but I'll make an argument for it over the PS1 for the following reasons:

1) Most of the best (non RPG) PS1 games, whilst groundbreaking and revolutionary for their time, haven't aged the best. This is due to a combination of being superseded by superior sequels/clones, utilising outdated and clunky control schemes and mechanics and ugly 3D visuals. That's not to say they're unplayable by any means of course. I can still get plenty of mileage out of them. But the Saturn is primarily known for great 2D games, and they're virtually all just as fantastic now as when they were released, both visually and playability wise.
2) It has an unbeatable library of 2D shooters and 2D fighters which are two of the best genres for sheer intensity and depth of gameplay, meaning they have a lot of staying power.
3) It has the best controller ever designed for aforementioned 2D goodness.
4) AM2>>>Namco, and this was a pretty big deal if you love your arcade games (which you likely do if you enjoy games from this era).
5) Although the PS1 was undoubtedly king of the RPGs for the 5th gen, the Saturn had a very solid library too, especially if you include imports (an increasing number of which are playable in English). I would actually say that the best ones on the Saturn (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III parts 1-3, Dragonforce) have an edge over the best ones on the PS1 (Chrono Cross, FFIX, Suikoden II, Persona 2). Given that I have a job and other hobbies/commitments, I obviously don't have time to play EVERY great 30+ hour game on each system. A better approach is to pick a handful of the best for each console, and the Saturn wins in this regard for me.

N64 is a very, very distant third. Easily Nintendo's worst major console. Meagre library, very little genre diversity, one of the worst controllers ever designed (this, combined with the hideous framerate of most games, means they mostly play like absolute dogshit now). Yes Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Mario 64 are amongst the GOAT. But then, Chrono Cross, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun, MGS etc. are probably amongst the best games of their respective genres too. And the Saturn and PS1 each had tons more great games than the N64 outside of that. Some of the other celebrated N64 games have just flat out aged badly (Goldeneye/Perfect Dark), whereas others were simply never that great to begin with (Starfox 64). After the Snes, which is probably the GOAT console, I'd have been pretty fucked off about the offerings I got on the N64 if I was a Nintendo fan back in the 1990s (once the initial OMG IT'S MARIO IN 3D hysteria had worn off) and would probably have jumped ship to Sony.

Finally the people saying things like "anyone saying X obviously hasn't played Y/is just trying to be a hipster" aren't contributing anything worthwhile to the discussion which, lest we forget, is about which system YOU would want to play, not which one is "objectively" the best (whatever that means). I mean I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would say the N64 was the best console of that generation, but I'd at least give their opinion credit for being an authentic and genuine one. I also notice that the ones who are the most obnoxiously smug in the superiority of their own opinion tend to also be the least knowledgeable. A good example is this guy:

I legitimately think anyone answering anything other than PS1 is an edgelord here (Or didn't own one and is fighting the good console warrior fight 20 years later). MOST of the games for all three of these systems haven't 'aged well' by most standards, but the PS1 was an embarassment of riches for gaming. Multiplat was barely even a thing that gen, so it is probably something like an 85-10-5 split in terms of percentages of good games back then, PS1-N64-Saturn.

who says that anyone voting for a non PS1 option is an "edgelord" but then goes on to make the claim that the N64 has twice as many good games as the Saturn, which is embarrassing and laughable quite frankly. Oh, and multiplat was very much "a thing" back then btw...

A little humility goes a long way. Pontificating aggressively on subjects you're obviously clueless about makes you look more than slightly foolish. Just a friendly tip :)
