If you could only have one system between PS1, N64 and Saturn...

If this was as a main gaming platform for the rest of my life, PlayStation 1 easily. Library is just better all around.

BUT

I really want to start collecting Saturn stuff so I'm kinda torn :x

N64 without a doubt.

We had a PSX but I hated those graphics, the controllers and especially the crazy long load times. Sold it, bought an N64 and never looked back. Saturn was something like a myth around here, only being sold by a select few stores in the Netherlands so I never got around to playing it much. What I experienced with it though, was pretty much the same as PSX.

saturn, because all the best ps1 and n64 games were re released and made downloadable later.

I want to play panzer dragoon zwei with a 3D saturn controller now

As much as I love Nintendo, I gotta go with the Playstation.

It was the perfect followup to the SNES. From Final Fantasy to Mega Man to Metal Gear. There's just so many of my favorite franchises on that one console.

I could only endure N64 because I couldn't afford many games anyway. Meanwhile, I finally got deeper into the PS1 library with PS3 bc and it has since become one of my favorite consoles - such an absolutely amazing platform.

PS1.

My cousin had a N64 and I felt it barely had any games worth playing. If I tried, perhaps I could find 5.

And Saturn?? I've never seen one of those in real life... and that period was one of the biggest gaming periods of my life...

There's a lot of games that the PS1 has that you say it's cool, but Zelda, Banjo, Mario Kart, fucking Turok... Get N or get out.

Ps1:

Tons of RPG's I love and that IMO hold up visually (thanks 2D graphics and Pre rendered backgrounds!!). And fun games of all genres (action, platformers, racing).
Lots of fun to be had in multiplayer too (Twisted Metal, CTR, Smack Down, lots of fighting games, etc).

Also much cheaper games. Want to Play FFIX? It's like $15 new and like $5 used. Want to Play Breath of fire IV? You an find it used for like $30.

Want to Play Panzer Dragoon Saga though? Get ready to pay like $500. Want to Play Dragon Force? Starts at like $70

N64. At the time my only console was the N64 and I had a great time with it.

On the flip side since I didn't have a PS1 there are more games that would be new to me, so maybe it's the smarter choice.

I legitimately think anyone answering anything other than PS1 is an edgelord here (Or didn't own one and is fighting the good console warrior fight 20 years later). MOST of the games for all three of these systems haven't 'aged well' by most standards, but the PS1 was an embarassment of riches for gaming. Multiplat was barely even a thing that gen, so it is probably something like an 85-10-5 split in terms of percentages of good games back then, PS1-N64-Saturn.

Like this, someone listing Turok as one of the best games that generation? 100% guaranteed you only owned an N64. Turok was dogshit.

Saturn was one of the worst promoted consoles outside Japan but with the best Japanese exclusives.

Waku Waku 7, Elevator Action Returns, Bubble Symphony, Game Paradise, Saturn Bomberman, Shinobi X etc

I'd have bought those arcade ports with arranged music instantly. Only reason I'd wish for a PS1, would be SOTN but there was a Saturn port. Who cared if it was inferior. Willy Wombat is one of the best mascots too

What an obnoxious sentiment.

Saturn and 64 had some phenomenal games. Some in particular are absolutely some of the most important or special games for people who played them when growing up. People who could finally play Sega Rally at home, people who liked 2D fighters (XMen vs Street Fighter + Saturn RAM cart), people who opened Ocarina of Time on christmas morning, people who made cardboard screen dividers to stop cheating fucks from looking at the other player's screen in Goldeneye.

Yes, PS1 has loads of awesome games but the saturn and n64 are easy to justify.

Nobody said they don't have good games. Great games even. But the sheer volume of great games isn't comparable no matter the genre.

The people you mention who are clinging to their memory of being 8 and getting OoT are exactly what I'm talking about.

Imagine if the PS2 gen had 90% of cross-platform titles only on the PS2, that's what the PS1 gen was like. The ratio of shit to quality was honestly not that different between the systems (There was a lot of shit all around) but the PS1 has like 7 times as many games as the other two. There is no genre it is lacking a AAA classic in, and both of the other systems have major gaps.

I'd be miserable, I don't think that genereation (of home consoles) has been topped yet. I'd pick N64 but PS1 is one of my favourite systems of all times :(

It's irrelevant how large a library is if it only provides an inferior experience in the genres one's interested in.

For arcade games of shmups there really wasn't any contest between the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation

I'd probably pick Saturn. It has far and away the best lineup of sprite based games (which actually hold up visually), and I think Sega's own polygonal arcade conversions have aged better than Namco's (VF2 & Sega Rally > *). It can't really compete with N64's 1st party lineup or PS1's JRPG lineup, but it does have the most games I'd probably want to go back to today. And it just got that Policenauts fan translation!

I owned all three consoles at launch. I played my Saturn the most at the time and it's the only one of the three that I still play with any consistency. You're welcome to call me an "edgelord" (whatever that means), but I know what kind of games I like and the Saturn caters to my tastes more than the other 2 do.

PS1 has the bigger library, N64 a few legendary games.

Hard choice

I know I had more fun with the N64, mostly because of Smash and Mario Kart.

I'll grab the PS1 though, due to the longevity of the system.. nooo waaait a minute. It's hogwash, I haven't seen anyone whipping out their ps1 in years in my circles. It's always old nintendo consoles doing well on that front.

I'm going with the N64, multiplayer nintendo games just can't be beaten.

Since I only had two consoles (PSX and Saturn) my vote would go to the Sega Saturn of the two.

Virtua Fighter Remix and Virtua Fighter 2 still look and play amazing on the Saturn hardware to this day. (Gameplay over FMV cutscenes)

Panzer Dragoon Saga's unique JRPG universe and story is still unmatched.

There were also many unique FMV games on the system like D, Enemy Zero, The mansion of hidden souls and Lunacy (Torico) that wanted to tell stories to push the medium forward.

It was also an awesome system for 2D arcade brawlers.
(Special thanks to Capcom for SF Alpha 2, X-Men VS Street Fighter & Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter)

Let's not forget the other system hits like Guardian Heroes, Shining Force 3 Pt 1, Dragon Force, Steep Slope Sliders, Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2, Nights into dreams...

The Saturn edges PS1 out for me. Had both (and a N64), and I still have the Saturn. As beautiful as those RPGs were on PS1, nothing compared to strange otherworldliness and battle system of Panzer Dragoon Saga. And PD Zwei was amazing. Then we have arcade-perfect SFA2, SFA3, X-Men vs SF, Radiant Silvergun, Virtua Fighter 2 (which I preferred over the Tekken games), NiGHTS, Soukyugurentai, Dodonpachi (admittedly better on PS1), the Cotton games, better Neo Geo ports, Hyper Duel, Batsugun, Battle Garegga, Guardian Heroes (amazing game), Marvel vs Street Fighter, Dungeons & Dragons, Assault Suit Leynos, Keio Yugekitai, and the list goes on.

Admittedly, I loved 2D sprite-based games more than the alternative.

PS1, easily. Funny how I chose it completely by chance back in the day. I was really thorn between it or a saturn, since I was a genesis kid.

That's because PSone era 3D games look like shit now

The Saturn's 2D games though still look gorgeous with the proper TV set
