What has always baffled me is this Electoral College thingy. Why is it a thing in the first place? So about a 500-600 people decide the president?

It was before the internet and cars existed. Not everyone could get out to vote so a representative of the people was chosen.

It's outdated as fuck such as everything else from the 1700s.

It doesn't matter though; Trump won the popular vote anyways.

I know this sounds really damn stupid and it is, but I kind of blame Jon Stewart for having a small hand in all this. Talk about retiring at the worst time.

I'm truly horrified. My sister, who has epilepsy, is freaking out because if Obamacare gets repealed she won't be able to afford the battery change in her brain implant. That brain implant is basically her only hope at having a life, because without it she has to be on so many pills it basically makes her a zombie/super depressed. I don't know what to say to her. I'm terrified for her.
Republicans and even Donald Trump are still human beings. No one is irredeemable. The folks in suits on the Senate and House floors aren't the same as the lost souls on 8chan. Write your representatives. Call the hotlines. Protest. Let your voice be heard. We can't give up fighting for a more moral and ethical society just because people are ignorant about politics.

Bleh this is what it feels like to lose all hope in the country. To know how un educated the fast majority of people are about politics.

Least I know a good majority of gaf belived there was some good of the United States in the people. I respect all of you that voted for Hillary and I'm just as let down as you. Today hate did beat love and from the looks we took one step forwards because of Obama and at least 2 steps back.

I just hope minorities aren't treated as bad as I fear. Everybody in the end are humans and to judge people based off their skin is deplorable and a unevolved way of looking at people.

Today is a sad day. Goodnight and may we all hope things will somehow not be as dark as most of us fear.

The orange popsicle is doing well in the popular vote as well. So there is that.

That's true, but my question wasn't about this election per se, but the whole process of the elections in the states. Correct me if I'm wrong, the popular vote doesn't count for shit?

I'm not convinced that Bernie would've won either.

Depends on how much you think the scandals hurt Hillary. He wouldn't have had the email server, he wouldn't have had the paid speeches thing, and he certainly wouldn't have been seen as an "establishment" candidate.

If you feel that some meaningful percentage of the voting public decided any of those hot button topics/scandals (and any I may have missed) were more important to them than policy (and frankly I think that may have been the case here in the rust belt, where I feel some non-college educated whites, while not all stupid and racist as some may imply, certainly weren't checking whether a candidate's proposals were feasible), it's not insane to think that he could have done better in those areas.

Given the states that Trump has flipped, states that haven't been red in a long time, I'm not sure how Bernie could have done much worse.

I'm very sorry. The best that we can do is pray for a substitute to help her.

For me, her speaking tonight wouldn't even really be about the election. That's over. It's about leadership. Rallying the half of the country not driving us towards a cliff and is in freaking mourning right now.

I don't know. Maybe the folks talking about the popular vote and whatnot are right when they say it's not important if she spoke or not. But to the political layman that I am, it seemed like a golden opportunity to at least give a small sliver of hope to the large swath of the country currently starving of it.

For you.
How is democracy failing? This result is literally democracy, the people voted for this guy. The only undemocratic thing here is not accepting the results as valid. Democracy doesn't mean "it's only ok when my candidate wins!!" no matter how despisable the other might be.
Democracy absolutely fails when it's used to elect a bigoted jackass that has no idea how to run a country and that will fuck up the country badly for decades. Terrible presidents are absolutely a failing of democracy.

It's a classic election, we always get to choose between dumb and dumber, this time it was swindler vs warmonger.

In the end big companies win and everyone else's life essentially stays the same.

If guess you are right if you dcn't count homosexuals, minorities, latinos etc as humans sure.

Welcome to the family America, guess British and Americans are as close as ever in making questionable choices. 2016 - the year of fuck ups.

You've gone from the best president you've ever had, to the worst you could possibly imagine.

Bra-fucking-vo.

I still cannot believe they just told everyone to go home.

Has this ever happened before?

I can't even bring myself to turn on the TV. Watched John King and Leslie Blitzer go through the numbers all night. I do not wish to hear any talking heads with commentary. The media is pathetic.

Also, it's very telling that now Hillary has lost all this criticism and negativity is coming out. Maybe if we had faced it earlier rather than bullying people ("Bernie Bro", etc.) into burying it, we wouldn't lose all this progress. Just a thought.

My condolences on people with stocks today. Ouch

I have a serious amount in US stocks. And you know what, I don't care that they plummet down right now. They will recover. What I do care about is how the world and general attitudes will change. I am so worried right now for all minorities and people who don't fit into this new America we will see these coming years.

It makes little sense to worry about the "people" "deciding" the president -- in practice, each state is worth a certain number of points, and the points decide the election. The points are roughly but not quite balanced to the number of people in the state.

What's the over under on him revealing this was a huge scam?

I know it's small, but is it larger than powerball odds?

I say yes

Also Bernie, as far as I know, just doesn't have the baggage she does. I wasn't a Bernie supporter but I can't imagine with all of the stuff that Trump has said and all of the stuff that has come out on him that the results would be the same.

That and Bernie just had that "IT". He was incredibly charismatic. I mean, just see the audience in Bernie's last speech for Hilary's nomination. People were in freaking tears over this guy.

I never got that sense with Hilary. Obama had "IT", Bernie had "IT", but Hiliary, and clearly now, absolutely did not.

Blaming this on "the media" is way easier than standing up to the fact that the US is a fundamentally racist country that now elected a fundamentally racist candidate, isn't it?

Man.

Agreed.

People are responsible for their votes, media or not. Of course the media has its own responsibilities, but it doesn't just come down to them.

You people realize that President Obama literally said "The sun will rise tomorrow" in a video he released today?

Right?

I get if you don't agree with him but I keep seeing these responses and can't help but laugh.

There's a difference between being condescending and reassuring. The former makes you "tool", as they put it

Then you have a very dangerous understanding of democracy. Again, democracy does not mean that it's only ok when YOUR candidate with the policies that YOU think are right wins. And if anyone the opponents are at fault who failed in convincing people why they are the better choice.

Not to mention the mental health side effects, which include depression and extreme mood swings. She can't work and can't drive without that brain implant, and without Obamacare she can't pay for the operation to replace the battery every ~2 years. I don't know what to say to her. I'm terrified for her.

I'm really sorry and I'm hoping everything works out the best for her

The silent majority indeed, Nixon was right. It truly brings things into perspective.

The most confusing turn of events I've seen in my life.

Special prosecutor against Clinton
Plans to build the wall
Obamacare repealed, replaced with ?
Planned parenthood defunded
Conservative justice appointed

Gonna be a busy first year

Well, they're married to them. Man of the house, and all that.

I mean this whole election can't be boiled down to racism, sexism. Hilary is down compared to Obama in numerous categories, including women, latino's, etc.

I am no Trump fan but choosing Hilary utterly screwed the Democratic party and I don't see a counter argument against it. They should have went with Bernie, he put up a damn good fight in many of the states that hurt Clinton.
