The Last Guardian: Review Thread

Oh I mean...this is about what I expected.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were never particularly designed for huge audiences.

Personally, I found them exceedingly difficult to play (played the remasters, not the at the time...so modernatization plays a factor).

I liked what they were getting at in terms of story and giving something different. I'll play this one day as well, but Im not forking over 60 bucks for it.

I am really impressed! Usually games that have been in very long development cycle or been hyped to death don't usually meet expectations. I am excited to play this later this month.

They are so weird considering they are PS fans. They dislike Team ICO and FROM games, which are the absolute premier reasons to buy PS consoles along with Naughty Dog.

For guys who are so into and entrenched in gaming they often seem to hate a good swath of it.

THAT'S your defense?

I played 6 hours of that mess and gave up.

seems to be the most common theme shared between the positive and negative reviews, that this is a game straight out of the mid-2000's released in 2016

We need more of these if you ask me. I love modern game design for a lot of reasons like improved accessibility and more room to adjust features and settings and just added QoL but I do miss a lot of what was lost in the process of stream lining and making things more efficient.

Has anyone sent hate mail to IGN yet? That score is almost as much of an outlier as Gamespots 8.8 for Twilight Princess. I'm sure it will ruffle some feathers!!

After God Hand's 3/10, Football Manager 2009's 2/10 (asking why people would play that over FIFA) and Deadly Premonition's 2/10 (as well as Silent Hill HD Collection's 9/10 score despite that HD port being a fucking mess) I think they don't really matter to some of us. And besides, some of us will just play it regardless of the scores (case in point, Flower, Sun & Rain, Nier, Deadly Premonition etc are games I love despite the terrible scores for them).

From the sounds of things, most are overlooking poor technical performance, dodgy a.i (which many seem to think reflects a real animal so Is good) and other things and still giving it a 9+..

This is not always the case. Many games can get thrashed by reviewers and still be well loved and thought of in the end. Nier has a 68 on Metacritic for example.

Mad Max is a recent example as well. Sitting at 69 on Metacritic. AC Syndicate is another one, sitting at 76. People just need to learn that reviews are harsher than they were last generation, as they should be.

Also MGSV and Mario 3D World being 90+ doesn't mean they are great generation defining games either, as I think both are average, especially MGSV. There are very vocal people about MGSV and Uncharted 4 as well. So it really goes both ways.

Best wishes.

Hey, that era gave us San Andreas, Half Life 2, Bioshock, Modern Warfare, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Halo, Portal, Snake Eater, Left For Dead....

not knocking it, though it doesn't seem like a game I'd personally enjoy, that just seems to be at the heart of the divisiveness of the reviews I've seen. those who can overcome that and those who can't.

MGSV is average?

If we're going to look at prior reviews by a website, at least narrow it down to the specific reviewer. For example, here's a list of the IGN reviewer's scores. Perhaps you'll get a better idea of what they enjoy/dislike in a game, and figure out how your tastes align.

Nope. the divisiveness comes from how they interact with Trico. Some don't like that it becomes frustrating and not 1:1 translate to their commands, and a lot seem to understand that the commands the boy gives are suggestions and not a 1:1 direct input.

83 on MC is a pretty damn good average score for any game (even more so for a game IGN declared dead 2 years ago).

I was expecting mid 70s on this, glad to see the game doing much better than that.

I have safely ignored them for a LONG time. I really don't know what they look for in games, but quality isn't something they seem to recognize consistently

Or the AI worked as planned and people enjoyed playing alongside of it.

I've seen a lot of that too, yes

I don't expect modern reviewers to understand Ueda's vision so I'm not really perturbed by certain negative reviews.

is this bait? because it sounds like bait.

I loved ICO and SotC but after reading the reviews I won't touch this game until it hits 20-30€. It's not about "vision" and more about bad gameplay elements imho.

MGSV is average?

Incredibly average with some of the worst game design for an open world game I've seen this generation. Final Fantasy XV having a fast travel system barely makes it slightly less bad. I'm also not the only one who believes this if you think I'm being insane.

Most overrated game this generation with that fat 93 on Metacritic, but back on topic, both The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XV scoring well after 10 years worth of development is pretty insane. They aren't 90+ world beaters that people were expecting years ago, but they aren't the utter mess a lot of people seem to be pushing them to be.

Best wishes.

I watch their gamescast because I would prefer to listen to people that don't have the perspective that I already have. Still don't understand it though. :p

I finished UC4 and would give it a 6/10 if I reviewed it just on the strenght of its visuals and overall presentation.

That's fine, a 6/10 is your opinion and many, MANY, others. Hell some would score it lower but if you actually read that guys review, you would clearly see it was click-bate. He had a similar thing with Dark Souls 2, but I don't want to make this thread about UC4. So lets stay on topic.
