looks more like that dragon rail shooter thing they released at launch

Just looked at some Lair gameplay on Youtube, you're right. Might have just been the strafing dragons. Lair... didn't hold up.

Hope Platinum come out of this alright. They can't perish before making a new Devil May Cry.

Does anyone else kind of feel like we might see a Sony-P* collaboration in the near future? If the cancellation of Scalebound does leave them in the lurch then even a small game with Sony might be beneficial to them, and the goodwill for Sony would be through the roof.

Not the first time this has happened to a Japanese exclusive on xbox.

Didn't this end up becoming Fantasy Life on the 3DS?

"creative clashes" =/= impossible milestones (game had already been delayed by a year...)

And no, we don't know exactly what happened with Phantom Dust so no "exact same thing" nonsense.

And don't act like MS is some terrible beast. Moon Studios and StudioMDHR have been vocal about how MS has been good to them. Are they perfect? Hell no. There are two sides to every argument. Let's wait and hear the details first

I never said they were especially worse than other publishers. They certainly have been mismanaging projects *lately.*

Have you seen how many other projects they were developing while doing this game? Impossible milestones probably because they didnt have enough people working on the game. So yeah maybe because the studio couldnt handle its priorities well for a large title like Scalebound.

i dont get this "ms fucked pg" over narrative

why would they cancel a good game ? if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck....

And there goes the exclusive I was looking forward to most for 2017. Might have to cop a PS4, not much else on XB1 I actually cared for.

This is a bummer. I thought the main character was attractive and the short clips of him flying on the back of the dragon around floating islands looked amazing.

Not long until Crackdown bites the dust I reckon. Announced years ago, barely been shown. I wonder what happened with it? Did the whole "cloud physics" thing get thrown under the bus?

The Coalition is just the new name of Black Tusk studio which was founded under Mattrick.

They had a game which got announced and later on canceled when MS bought the Gears franchise and ended it to them.

This part was not under Don though, they were mobilised into a Gears factory and Ron was brought in with all his talent and experience to steer the studio. My point still stands, Mattrick isnt part of Coalition, they were strengthened when he left. Both talent and investment.

It was below Judgment on US and sold pretty bad on the UK, was one of the flops of the year in Spain and isn't even charting across France or many other countries.

I will say Gears of War 4 is a major failure compared to previous main entries.

Gears of War 4 will be lucky to sell LF what Gears 3 did first week.

https://www.google.pt/amp/s/www.vg2...-in-first-week/amp/?client=ms-android-htc-rev

Weve been through this. This article only proves my point again that the Xbox360 had 20 million more consoles sold than xbox one when 3 came out.

wow MS, just... wow.

i mean, i mostly buy xbox consoles for halo anyway, but you're really not giving me anything to be excited about anymore.

seriously... WOW

Yeah there was definitely a change in focus. Still surprised at how much they were counting on Kinect at launch though. It was all preceded by many months of Wii ceding the monthly sales lead to Xbox 360, Wii U not succeeding, and a drop in handheld software sales as the casual audience went to mobile.

Yup, the Kinect must have given them an insane boost in profit in the short run. It might be biting Microsoft Studios in the ass now.

Not neccisarily Sony, but i think that a partnership with somebody has to come in short order, they can't sustain themselves with such a vacuum for long.

They basically just shut down a game a huge portion of the studio was working on with nothing to show for it besides wasted money and man hours.

If Sony wants to give them that opportunity, i would not be against it, but anyone could do it.

Wow at the latest tweet! Thought ms is past their snarky attitude towards developers? Then again Phil was the one handling games development back then and now he is head. Something just don't change internally?

No ill-will towards Xbox fans, but seeing as big daddy Microsoft wants the gaming division to go that route anyway, frankly I hope that they get out of gaming, at least as far as the console business goes, ASAP. The trends they keep trying to push ever since they entered the industry aren't healthy, this generation less than ever. Especially if those tweets about Microsoft witholding payment and treating Platinum like shit are true. Wouldn't be the first time they did it after all: Phantom Dust.
No ill will but fuck all MS fans .. is how I just read this. I mean come on, how about waiting for the actual details to come through first?

Thats not true, Don left in 2013, Gears franchise was bought in 2014 and Coalition was setup.

The Coalition was originally Black Tusk Studio/MGS Vancouver and was established under Mattrick. It wasn't until after Mattrick had left when the Black Tusk IP was shitcanned so they could make Gears.

This insight is so vacuous, though.

Why would they bundle Kinect?

Why would they TV TV TV?

Why would they make any mistake, ever?

Mistakes happen. Saying ex-post "if it was good they wouldn't cancel it, therefore it is not good" is circular logic based on nothing but blind faith.

Why use cloud when scorpio is coming... i really think crackdown 3 is the second next project to get cancel after that HD port of phantom dust.

I'd imagine that Platinum is frantically trying to get new contracts asap from anybody. I'm no insider or anything but basic sense tells me that an independent developer losing their biggest contract mid-development is really, really bad.

The studio was made under Mattrick, hence under Mattrick, Microsoft was opening and acquiring studio which is not the case under Spencer.

The assumption is its still being worked on.

Cloud physics wasn't thrown under the bus. Their last showing of the game with cloud physics was damn impressive.

Unfortunately, we haven't seen anything since.

Why would they have the project greenlit and spend such a period in development only to do that?

I'm guessing they weren't happy with the way the game was shaping up but they couldn't out-right cancel it without resorting to contingencies within their contract with Platinum. Basically, make it their fault for failing to deliver on criteria.

But I have no idea, really.

The other possibility is Ms just not knowing what they want, constantly changing their minds, demanding alterations that Platinum didn't have the proper resources for, etc. surprise! Game is shit.

It's not standard practice to do this and it's weird that you're pretending it's normal.

I mean to be fair canceling games that you've put a shitload of promotion into isn't a thing that's normal, at least in the major publisher space. There's not really a standard playbook here.

During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.

Ya know? If MS just cancelled the game because it was just a damn mess. While that sucks. I can see it and really wouldn't have issue with it. At all.

But if these allegations are true and MS pretty much set PG up to fail. They just made this a bigger deal than it was ever going to be. IMO SB was never going to be a huge seller. Probably sell at best like 1.5 million. Which I think is something that the Xbox needs just to show there is an audience for these games.

But if they cancelled it because it was a mess I doubt you'd have too many people upset. But if these reports are true and it does get reported on in detail. This could potentially damage their reputation.

Why are they deleting all the videos/trailers? Is this a standard thing to do when canceling games? Because it seems like an overkill to me.

The product doesn't exist anymore, why sell it? If the videos stayed online they'd never see the end of trolls and genuinely interested people asking about the game.

Read above, they turned into a studio with direction (and a hit) post Mattrick.

It still hurts. <z3

Whoever is managing these titles lately is dropping the ball. Once, ok. Twice? Mulligan. Three times? Four?

The truth of the matter is that outside of Gears 4, Sunset Overdrive and Forza series, it seems like every other release comes with some weird fucked up caveat attached.

I am not sure they are interested. But it would be good to for them to get more work alongside the work they will probably have from Nintendo.

I mean, Sony is pretty aware of the general mood of the more hardcore gamers. It wouldn't surprise me of they went to Platinum and said "Sucks, but wanna make a game with us?" and then bring that up at an E3 with huge fanfare. I mean, they picked up From for Bloodborne after DS1 abd DS1 was sucessful, very even, but no CoD or anything. Wouldn't surprise me if they did something like that again.

MS may very well be a scum company, but lets not pretend they're an exception rather than the rule. It wasnt long ago Shu was backing the bus over the devs of No Man Sky, for example.

The whole industry is pretty cut throat. You make bad shit, you're going to get torched. Only difference us if you get the chance to release first ir not.

Backing the bus?!

He told it like it was. You'd rather some PR rubbish?
