Gravity Rush 2 Review Thread

Good to see the open world and the narrative being praised. The camera and mission design seem to be the biggest complaints.

Anyone know when the Yakuza embargo is? Still not sure which of the two to get.

Holy crap at IGN saying it's 40 hours long and still has to go back for some more side quests. I would be worried that it's just boring busywork fetch quests, but IGN really liked the side quests.

I had a hard time skipping side missions. They provide a unique look into the lives of each city’s residents and offer varied assignments. Some had such a long story to tell that they were broken up into multiple parts, but the shorter one-off missions were cool too.

Interesting. Does it say whether the shorter side quests are differentiated in any way from the side quests that have a continuum throughout the game?

I can't think of the specific game that did this (Xenoblade or Witcher maybe?) but the more substantial side quests had a different icon on the map.

Like, light blue=longer, narrative side quests, orange=quick fetch quest.

That 40 hours includes side missions. The actual play time will vary from person to person but completing the main story while doing a few side quests here and there should take you around 20+ hours.

Thank God it's getting great reviews. Was never going to be 9's across the board, but a solid 80? I love gr, so really happy we got an awesome sequel.

Loving these reviews. Can't wait to play it, I'll happily spend all of February with it :D

The only animu type game I may end up picking up this year
Madness. The PS4 is an animu game machine this year. Nier, Persona and this are just the tip of the iceberg.

I put together a spoiler-free video review if there's any interest here, too. Lots of new gameplay for you to watch, though I tried to be conservative so as to not give any of the surprises away:

I don't want to piss on everyone's parade in this thread (great reviews!), I just noticed that this lingering shot is the exact reason why I feel like I am not the developer's target audience and also why imo the series won't ever reach mass appeal with the occassional pandering camera and outfits.

I'm glad the game is receiving positive reactions and I love the environmental art and music (and female protagonist!), it's just too bad with the eye-rolling gratuitous titillation. Why is it necessary? Or is it basically just an essential part of the identity of the series to design this stuff for a presumed straight dude audience?

Anyway, just my feelings on the matter and why this sequel in some ways disappoint me.

I don't think a few lingering shots are the reason why this game would not reach a mass audience :(

The stigma of "JAPAN GAMES DONT COUNT" is still too huge in general regardless of the content. You actually have to trick people into thinking the game is western to sell and even then there is a Dragon's dogma bomb

The good reception by critics almost makes up for Scalebound's cancellation :/
We need more joyful and relaxing games like this, I'm so glad this one even exists.

Really? :D

It's not THAT bad or am I just not being PC enough? Sure, there's some male-oriented fanservice going on but what I'm seeing is totally harmless. The outsfits themselves have been revealing from the start so...

I played Bayonetta 1 & 2 recently, it's much more in your face there.

You're judging a 20~40h game by a 5s scene in a very specific (and certainly optional) outfit. It's like you're looking for something to be bothered about.

I haven't played GR1 (though I may pick up GRR when it's on sale and give it a try), but I just came here to say that it's nice to hear that this one is getting such good reviews. After yesterday, which was full of bad news, it's cool to see a game that definitely could have gone either way turn out well.

Everything is such a horrible sexual controversy with you isn't it? Try lightening up and enjoying life. I mean holy shit.

81 on both metacritic and opencritic is excellent, but I must admit I was expecting slightly higher. Having said that, scores are not everything and reading the actual text of the lower scoring reviews, it is apparent that almost everyone found the game enjoyable and there is a consensus that the game is original and has fun mechanics. Based on the reviews alone I am confident I will like this sequel better than the already good first game.

In short - you did a good job Team Siren!

Sounds like what I expected, better than the previous game (in the original is a 7/10 camp here) but not quite addressing the main issues.
And that's still good enough for me to buy, though the UK price is a tough one to stomach for any title on Day 1, can't remember the last time I dropped over £40 on a new game and this one seems to consistently stick around £45.
It'll probably be a price drop purchase but not as low as my usual £20 wait so there's that.

At first I was like it's ok but then stupid camera focusing on her tits. Like, why?

It feels really dissonant because the first game wasn't really pandering (other than the stupid shower scene). Sometimes it evens feels more like a "girly" game, so I don't get it.

Still i'm not gonna judge the whole game for that, I assume this is gonna be a really minor thing in the game (or atleast want to think). Things like this are a given with any game with even a minor Anime influence.

"Guys I don't mean to shit on the thread but...." yeah not sure that poster bother to bring that issue up in a review thread. Anyways back to the main topic, the reviews. Pretty confident it should stay above 80 on meta, it's been getting consistent good to great reviews so far.

You are probably joking but honestly I couldn't give two fuck about stuff like that in games. I am more exposed to sexual content walking 2 blocks downtown then anywhere else so if the game is good i don't see why I would care.

I was so focused on Yakuza 0, I totally forgot this was coming out so soon.

And then Tales of Berseria and Nioh. God damn, I don't have enough time.

While I expected the game to review well, happy to see it get solid scores across the board. I remember when I was pissed it wasn't coming to Vita and while I would be lying if I said that still didn't bother me a bit, happy that the studio used the PS4 to make large worlds for Kat to explore.

Seems every issue the original had got fixed (controls, combat) while other things (story, scale of world) getting even better. Happy to see critics give the game solid scores :). I don't own a PS4, so I won't be reviewing this on 3WIREL but I will write about the series at some point in the future.

Keep on flying Kat and hope your new adventure sells great :D!

......Sony, are you going to market this? It got good reviews after all.

If I remember my time with the first game, there was fan-service at one point but it wasn't that show-y. My guess is that they wanted to have more 'anime-esc' moments present across the story and that is fine. Kat looks to be happy and confident doing that animation, so it's not like that's against her character or anything. I don't mind stuff like that in games if there is a decent reason for it to be present, so if the plot/story/etc has a good enough context, I likely won't mind it much whenever I play the game.

I do see how stuff like that can bother people and I'm sorry if that is ruining a bit of the game for you :(.
