Nintendo Switch Joy-Con $80, Pro Controller $70

Damn.... Does Nintendo do Online gaming with the switch?

Pretty high price tag. Personally I'm passing on this or until huge price drop. I can see how it being Nintendo will still get people to buy. Kind of a gotta buy em all kinda thing.

didn't the wii u have a front facing camera for video chatting? pretty sure that thing never got used thanks to their terrible online system.

Yes, completely bizarre. Did any game use that, ever?

ps4 controller is 60 for a lot of features nintendo is advertising.

And a single JoyCon, which functions on its own as a full controller, has more, newer tech in it, for $10 less than a Dual Shock 4. The DS4 doesn't have an IR camera, NFC, or HD Rumble.

Don't forget that for $80 you are getting two of them.

Edit: For further reference, the PS Move launched at $50 and the Nav Controller was $30. So that's $80 for a pair of controllers that do far less than two JoyCons. (So stoked I got two sets on clearance at Kmart for like less than $20 total bwahahaha)

So have I got this right?

The joy-cons don't have a usb charging slot and the grip bundled with the controller doesn't charge the controllers, so the only way to charge your controllers is to use the tablet? So you can't play on your tv?

And with the joy-cons being so small and including gyro's, hd rumble, accelerometers, and a nfc reader, I don't see the battery life being good.

that's utterly ludicrous.

Now that it is all on the table, the whole concept is ludicrous. Which is why it will fail.

I don't know about the battery life but the charging part is true. There will be a 30€/$ charging grip on the store.

So the price of getting another set of joycons, the grip and an extra dock.. Is $200.

May as well shell out the extra 100 and get a whole new system at that point.

Initially $40, and to add an analog stick and two more buttons to it cost an additional $20.

Now take into account that the JoyCon is both smaller, and includes more impressive (relative term) technology, for $10 more that the Wii Remote alone.

So it's actually $10 less than the equivalent Wii Remote and Nunchuck combo, while having more complex technology inside.

Again, not saying it's an ideal price, but some of the reactions in this thread are a little crazy. $80 for two is a hard pill to swallow indeed but that's also the price of two Wii Remotes but with better tech inside and analog sticks standard.

Tricky thing is, I am not potentially buying a Joy-Con pack to split it into parts and sell them off. I am potentially buying a standard game platform controller for multiplayer. That's the only part I am really buying here, and I assume most others too. With that in mind, is that technology really a good fit here? Do separate Joy-Cons have to be that small? I mean, it saves Nintendo on making them to make one size, but for my big, shaking fingers this is an antifeature. And for the same reason I don't like analog sticks. But these are very personal sentiments, you'll say, especially the latter. Sure, but there are others which are probably universal:
  • The NFC reader should not have been a part of the JoyCon. Multi-amiibo functionality for local multiplayer with people from outside? Seriously? This really should have been part of the main unit, with an optional extender for home play a'la one for O3DS.
  • I doubt if HD Rumble is going to be an actively used feature, especially in multiplayer games.
  • The IR camera is the really confusing thing to me, given that's it is apparently not going to be used for a sensor bar equivalent, and its positioning. The only use of it I have seen so far is frankly ridiculous. Did I mention that it being in one Joy-Con probably propels up prices of both single Joy-Con SKUs, and reduces multiplayer uses? (If it was in both, the combo pack would definitely be pricier, don't get me wrong.)

What would be the price of Joy-Cons without these? I frankly don't know. But for me they would have lost next to nothing of the value as multiplayer controllers.

I was hoping this was fake.... And that there would be an update on prices..... No way these cost that much wtf they look so small and cheaply made too ???

Seriously, what does the Switch pro controller do that the Wii U one can't do?

I wish I could use the hardware I've already invested in. It was pretty nice being able to use Wii stuff on Wii U.

We have no idea what the battery life is going to be.

Wiimote is a 2006 technology. A technology that is no longer compatible with Nintendo's hardware by the way.

Looks like you're doing bad crisis PR here.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Thats... oh dear. Thats straight up broken. Can't be true can it? The grip thing HAS to charge them?

Included grip doesn't charge. Want it to charge? Pay for the grip that does.

The grip that you can buy separately for $30 does!

Fuck me. Fucking fuck me. What. WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

So without that extra investment, this thing is a console with a time limit. "SORRY BUD, USED UP YER TV TIME THERE. BACK TO THE HANDHELD GHETTO YOU GO!"

$80 for joycons, $90 for dock, $30 for grip, all things included with the system. Guess that makes the console itself worth $100? lol

1) NFC being baked into the Gamepad critically hampered Amiibo-based games because they all had to be hot-seat. Spreading it into the controllers works better because you get better flexibility for swap modes or even individual modes, not to mention in table-top you aren't likely to touch the unit.
2) Rumble isn't a requirement, you could take it out of any controller, but if you have it, you might as well make it good and as useful as possible.
3) The IR camera can be used for tracking, nobody said it can't. They have not laid out real use cases but it is much more powerful than the one used in the Wii Remote because it does at least some level of depth sensing for gesture recognition/distance measuring/object scanning.

It has to be docked? Can't it just be connected to the tablet and charge that?

Well I guess that depends if the tablet is charged.

I mean out of the box If our current info is correct it could be possible that you will have to dock your controllers to the tablet because they are out of battery and have no other way to charge them, but because your tablet is also out of battery because you just got back from using it as a portable you literally cannot play your console you just paid $300 for.

I mean this has to be wrong right that just makes no sense?

Edit: On second thought I guess you would always be able to play in portable mode as the tablet has usb c port but still You couldn't use it as a console

They're outta their fucking minds not including a charging grip

When I realized they don't even include a propriety cable for the 3DS which you have absolutely no way of charging out of the box I didn't think Nintendo would be that stupid but they are. I'm not surprised really.

This is so insane that I'm refusing to believe it haha. Man this is nuts.

Lets see, so a Dualshock 4 has:

Accelerometers
Rumble
Light bar
Touch pad
A headphone jack
One control pad, one analog stick, and two analog triggers more than a Joycon
and it costs $48 USD right now on Amazon.

I know the joycon has more internal crap for all their motion games but $50 for one of these is ridiculous.

It's even more stupid when you compare a DS4 with the Switch Pro Controller that'll sell for $70 which are a more direct comparison and it's not clear whats so amazing about the Switch Pro that justifies a $20 price premium over the PS4's.

What were they thinking!?

Well no that can't happen.

Wait the included grip doesn't charge either? Like, what? That seems like a crucial bit of functionality regardless if you use the portable aspect of the console.

For everyone complaining about price and comparing to Dualshock:

Remember that this has an advanced haptic-like rumble system as well as technology for detecting an object's position relative to the controller.

This is NOT an apples-to-apples comparison. I don't like the high price, either, but let's be realistic here.
