North American Nintendo Switch Lineup

It's not quite as bad as the post-launch drought for Wii U. Splatoon is pretty much it for summer, presumably more games will come out in the holiday which they'll announce at E3.

Yep, no doubt that Nintendo will announce more games at E3, because I need
mother 3.

Wait, there's a special edition of Breath of the Wild besides the Master edition? Did I screw up this morning just pre-ordering the base version?

Will there be virtual console games at launch? I know there's a free game for a month with the online subscription, but I didn't notice anything else.

A significant amount of people buy Nintendo console for Nintendo games. Nintendo has muscled out the 3rd parties from their own platform, particularly with the Wii u where the Nintendo core was the only audience who owned one.

Add in the mid-cycle launches, and a good portion of their audience already has a competitors box with 3rd party support out the balls.

I'm sure we'll get more third party support from activision and ubisoft in the holidays(like cod and assassins creed, maybe).. But my god, March is looking real bad... Wish Activision fetched us a bone and gave us modern warfare remastered. /:

honestly, the wii u drought was pretty bad, and stuff kept getting pushed back when we were told launch or launch window. the wind waker hd was when things started to get going, which was ten months after launch. in the meantime there was rayman legends, lego city undercover, monster hunter, dragon quest x, game & wario, wii fit u, new super luigi u, zombi u, need for speed most wanted, scribblenauts, batman, mass effect 3, and pikmin 3. ten months after the switch launches, it will be 2018.

It truly is bad. I know a lot of people are saying "but Zelda" but I can't count that since it's coming out on Wii U too (where I will buy it).
It'd be like the PS4 coming out and you could just get Resogun on PS3 - that launch lineup would've been total garbage.

(I love Knack, obviously ;)

Wha-what? Wasn't that game like $20 at launch?

The game plus DLC is current £27 on steam, so around $32. Then you pay a premium to have it as a physical product.

Chances are it'll drop to about $35 before launch due to discounts, so you're not paying much more than it is on steam.

There are still eshop exclusive games and indies to be announced to fill up the launch window right? There just has to be, plus some smaller Nintendo games to fill out the spring, and fall. I have to imagine Nintendo has saved some nice announcements for just before launch and later.

It's not big 3rd parties I am scratching my head over.

It's where are all of the indie games? In theory even at its power level it's modern architecture should mean it easily runs a lot of the common engines.

So why not try and get more indies on board to help fill the gap?

Why not be like hey we talked to the Stardew Valley guys and helped them get it running on the Switch. You know or Darkest Dungeon, Enter the Gungan, Hyper Light Drifter ect ect...

I believe Stardew is coming to Switch
According to their website post regarding console releases:

Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U, however. Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch. I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch's unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this.

I personally believe a good amount of switch games are being made right now. It launching q1. I expect we will see some bigger games on the system from third parties summer into the holiday period.

I had hope like you once, but after an entire generation of being sure Nintendo had something up their sleeves and being disappointed over and over again I'm done with giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to be judging them by what they actually show from here on, not what I imagine they might have back stage.

If the Wii U had 3D Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Kart and possibly Pokemon in its first year, it would have been a hit.

Mario Kart is a port, Zelda is also on the Wii U, Splatoon 2 seems very similar to Splatoon 1 (as in could just as easily be DLC), and Pokemon seems highly unlikely to come out this year.

I'm trying not to be cynical, but regarding Skyrim I'm finding it super hard not to see this as "okay, we'll test the waters with one game, see how people react. What, our five year old port didn't sell? Guess this platform isn't worth supporting"

Why is Zelda being on the Wii U a bad thing? I don't remember that hurting Twilight Princess on Wii in any conceivable way. It's still a new Zelda game at launch. People buy a switch, they can also buy a brand new Zelda game. That it's also coming out on wii u is completely irrelevant.

Worst is if the game sold well enough, they'll just do more late ports like Dishonored or Fallout 4.

I didn't say it is a bad thing. But if someone owns a Wii U (and many Nintendo fans do), then porting Mario Kart to the Switch doesn't create a huge amount of value.

And Twilight Princess was released on the Wii and GameCube at the same time. Much different to being years apart.

This is what I'm wondering too. Surely this is coming? 5 games in the UK is laughable.

I mostly agree with you. I don't think you can apply the same standards to a console launching mid-gen though. I'd expect more from a mid-gen launch. Consoles don't launch in a vacuum.
I dunno, I think mid-gen has its advantages. If it were on-par with the other machines on the market it would almost certainly receive a TON of ports at launch. Many of the newest titles on PS4 and Xbox One would probably show up right away.

It's the launching mid-generation with less powerful hardware that is likely causing an issue here.

After checking out some of these games, I think this might be a launch for me. I see the switch as a take along local MP machine. And with titles like Puyo Tetris, Bomberman and SnipperClips it seems to be a perfect start for that. I'm not cool with some of the prices, but I'll wait for them to come down a bit, before I get every title...

All in all I would say it doesn't look too bad. Nintendo's own lineup seems pretty promising. In the first few month we are getting Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon, maybe the new Xenoblade and a new 3D Mario. If there are really no delays, that's pretty cool for the first year and way more impressive than Pikmin 3 'in the launch window'.

I would argue that maybe Fire Emblem Warriors isn't too far off neither with the direct next week and we still have to get a spotlight on UbiSoft titles and Skyrim - I'd bet the heavily rumored other Wii U ports are mostly part of the first year lineup too.
So we could end up with a high quality to extremely high quality title every other week.
While that's more than enough for me, I can see that this doesn't begin to satisfy other players though.

I'm really thinking what Nintendo's strategy is with this launch though. They simply might have to launch because of shareholders and because they are sitting on R&D costs and have titles ready and gathering dust atm. But with the prices they are starting, they put themselves into a corner. Nobody will buy the Switch as an impulse buy now. Most of the games are too expensive too.
So are they trying to ride the 3DS out at a low price point, build up a library for the Switch, slowly get the price down to 250 and then launch a smaller Switch Mini to replace the 3DS without removable Joy Cons and the ability to be docked for 150 as the 3DS successor? That would have an insane library day one and the Switch would most likely receive a boost too because of synergy effects.

If that's the plan, I can somewhat understand what's going on. But even then, I cannot get behind on how they presented it. Completely disjointed. We got a video on parental controls before ever seeing the OS! We didn't see anything on VC - only snippets on that it's coming. How the online works is still unclear. We don't have PR on the launch lineup. None of the heavily rumored UbiSoft titles made an appearance... And they didn't even bother to say: 'We'll release further information on the release dates and our services up to launch.' - we have to wait it out.
This would be kinda okay for a console that's half a year away or longer, but not for one that's releasing in about a month.

And it would have been simple to fix. Just show the damn stuff during a Splatoon 2 presentation. Have someone receiving a message on his phone, looking for a WiFi spot, booting up the Switch, putting in his headset into Switch and let's see him meet up with his party and start a game... Then switch the camera to another person sitting at home, closing down Super Mario 64 on the Switch on his couch as he receives an invitation, putting the Switch in the dock, starting Splatoon 2 - he talks over the phone through the Nintendo online App.
It's not rocket science. It would have shown, that all the stuff is there, even if they don't immediately talk about it.

Well shit I may be starting to come around to day one and it's due to just watching all the game trailers individually for the launch titles and beyond. It's making me realize how badly an impression that presentation made even though they used the same footage.

Fake edit: oh wait just realized arms isn't a day one launch title. Snipper clips though...hmm.
This is currently the flip flopping going on in my head.

Launch library quality:
Wii U > Switch > Wii

It does look to me they may have spared some games from Switch's launch to prevent a drought like Wii U's which was really dreadful, even to just read about. If the launch came with the upcoming ("launch window") ARMS and the enhanced Mario Kart port it would look a lot meatier (at least quality-wise, no real saving the 3rd party situation), but then what are they going to sell between now and Splatoon 2?

Anyway, there was talk about the Switch having the power of both Wii U and 3DS development teams behind it, but this is clearly not a Wii U + 3DS launch nor does the forecast look like anything beyond we saw for the Wii U. Maybe this will change at E3 and the 3DS puts out its remaining games.

The Wii U was there in quantity, but many of the ports weren't up to the Ps360 versions in technical respects, late and too expensive.

I'm somewhat fine with less games, but more exclusives, more suited for the platform and a steady stream of new releases afterwards.
Not saying that is the case, but until we know most of the dates and games up to -let's say- May, we don't really know how this will turn out.

There just wasn't a lot of interest from third parties, and Nintendo wasn't really being aggressive in trying to court them.

If the Switch becomes a success, that could change.

I'm hoping that those developers which were previously creating 3DS software will jump over to Switch resulting in a wholly unique lineup of third party games.

Could happen eventually, a lot of those guys haven't had kits until recently, or still don't.

In addition to a lot of the major first party titles, I think I Am Setsuna makes a great fit for the Switch. Probably gonna pick that up since I don't own it yet.

I'm not going to bother arguing this post, but Twilight Princess was in the same situation as Breath of the Wild.

TP was backed up by other games on launch and on the horizon. Switch has practically nothing so far (let alone on launch only), so why would you buy new hardware for what's already available on your old?

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I just went through the Wii U lineup (not just launch- the entire thing) just to get some perspective and its amazing how horrible it was, both first and third party wise.

IF the 1st party games announced meet their current dates the Switch first party lineup will be much much better than Wii U.

Just for some perspective, Pikmin 3 released nearly 8.5 months after launch and was the biggest 1st party release since launch. By that time in Switch's life cycle you will have Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, ARMS, and most likely FE Warriors and some other stuff.

I'm just very worried once again, for the third party support for this thing. Let's say X1 and PS4 are getting a new game. Can anyone see them downgrading it for switch, or skip the platform entirely?
