Polygon: Nintendo Switch will launch with fewer games than the Wii, Wii U or 3DS

Its not about spinning - thats just the market reality.
The people who want to play more arent the people getting a Switch at launch and Nintendo/Thirds seem to be fine with that.

The picture shows off the titles that they have announced at this point - January 2017.
If you think that they wont have additional Switch announcement for this year at e3 - thats you Right to believe.

I don't believe this for a second.

This article ignores that the Wii and Wii U launched near the holidays and most of the games were cross-platform yearly release holiday games and games that were released during the early fall.

And your point?

You're simply reminding us that the Switch isn't getting games like Resident Evil,
Dead Effect 2, Telltale's next Walking Dead, Berserk, or Bulletstorm.

Seeing as how the switch is sold out everywhere, it launched with the right amount of games. The launch line up is good enough to sell out the console.

How much time do people have in the day where they think they'll be able to play and complete every launch game by the time mario kart 8 comes out in april?

People like choice, taste is subjective. If it is to win the mainstream it needs a more diverse launch window.

I guess I'm more directed at the crowd saying "Zelda looks great but I'm not buying a switch for just that."

You aren't. You're also buying it for all the other games you saw that you're looking forward to.

I totally understand the price drop argument though.

No BC definitely hurts it on that end. Used to be nice having a build in library when buying a new console. And although Xbox is the only console maker doing BC, it didn't show up for quite some time after launch.

I expected them to announce more than they did, yes.

You also expect them to say nothing new at E3? They laid out the majority of their first party year 1. They're gonna tell you what's up (roughly) in 2018 in June. Retro's next thing is due to be revealed, we've yet to see announcements from the usual suspects and some of rumor/leak stuff still needs to be addressed.

I really don't know what you would have them announce on top of this now. And realistically.

First three months is Zelda, MK, ARMS (probably Spring=May/June?). Inbetween you have the announced third party retail things we've seen so far plus eShop stuff you'll learn about later. Nevermind the fact that they already said more announcements in the coming weeks.

Their launch line-up isn't Mario Party, Wii Music, and Steel Diver. Their first few months are Zelda, Kart DX, new multiplayer IP, and Splatoon 2. If you don't care you don't care, that's fine. But lots of people acting like the line-up is a wasteland - or the even more ridiculous claim of the pacing being shit - that I for the life of me cannot understand.

I won't be able to get it at launch, so no big deal for me. Kind of sucks though for the hardcore Nintendo fan who has a Wii U. As a general rule, I think it's a good idea to try and have a high quality exclusive day 1. Really surprised the only big game they have is cross gen, especially after the delay.

The Switch is going to flop so hard. I can't understand how Nintendo still hasn't gotten its act together with getting 3rd party games on their consoles.

His best selling game did under 500k if I recall correctly.

Britney spears sold a lot of albums when she was popular, doesn't mean her music was good.

Edit: I'm getting old, should probably say Justin Bieber sold a lot but his music is shit. I take it you follow.

Zelda is the reason I'm getting the Switch at launch, I even have a Wii U but I love new hardware and Breath of the Wild is looking like it might be a strong contender for GOTY.

Nintendo still need more games though, as not everyone is into Zelda. I still can't get my head around how Mario Kart 8, basically a Wii U port, is not ready for launch day.

The lackluster 3rd party showing is also worrying, some of them haven't even started their games yet, what the hell were they doing on stage with nothing to show, it was pretty embarrassing.

I love Nintendo but they are so frustrating sometimes. Really hope they listen to some of the feedback and turn the bad stuff around.

Some of us dont give a damn what they announce at e3. Launch is sooner and what they announced was lacking.

because the wii u is dead and there will be more nintendo games on the switch, so why not get that instead and a better zelda too.

its not like the wii u is a system with a ton of hidden gems.

Or save yourself £300 and buy zelda on the console you've already got. Wait until the switch library is more full and a possible console price drop happens.

The lineup for me personally is fine for what it is. Would I have liked more games? Sure, but I'm not gonna have much free time to spend on video games until summer as it is. For me, Zelda will last me until Mario Kart, and then that'll last me until Arms, and then Splatoon 2, and so on all the way up to Mario Odyssey. When I think back to the 3DS launch and the PS4 and Vita launches, I can only recall getting one or two games at launch, and that was it for months for me. The only difference here is that now there is less choice in what my one or two games will be.

Obviously this shouldn't excuse Nintendo for clearly rushing this launch along though, as not everyone's in my position.

Yes. Example below. A lack of games is NOT a positive.

I have one preordered at amazon and have the SE of Zelda preordered as well. But I'm in the minority of people who are doing this. This is a tough sell for general audiences.

You have to remember a lot of us are looking at the bigger picture here. We want Switch to be successful. We want this thing to sell 50 million in it's lifetime. But so far it's hard to see that.

Launch is big reason people jump in and even a lot of the nintendo faith are having doubts. How do you think general audiences will feel? Remember a poor reveal can taint the entire life of the product.

Rushing? All I've read for the past year said Kimishima was delaying the launch because he wanted to have games ready to launch with the system. Guess they didn't delay it long enough, because they certainly don't have many games ready for launch.

I think this depends a lot on what starts showing up around E3 time. They're going to be selling out early regardless of content. Summer news will tell us whether year 2 will more likely be loaded, or a wasteland.

Yes. Example below. A lack of games is NOT a positive.

Pretty much lol.

I normally get Nintendo as a second console, mainly for exclusives and I'm sure there will be some great exclusives in its lifecycle, Mario Odyssey looks fantastic but even I know Nintendo need to do better when it comes to 3rd party support.

Strategy seems to be to keep a steady flow coming, and not blow their load on the first day.

March is Zelda, April has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Arms will be soon after that (Spring), followed by Splatoon 2(summer). E3 will be before or soon after Splatoon.

Well at least its getting Sonic. Disgaea. Skyrim and something else this year.i haven't lost hope for a Marvel vs Capcom 4 down the line

Anyone planning on playing a fighting game on this had better invest in the pro controller, btw. Wassat, another 80 bucks? And any multi platform fighter is going to be gimped to shit on this system.

This is very unlikely, but I see that some third party games do exist and a lot have a spring date BUT, how many developers declined to be at launch because of Zelda?

This is not a Nintendo apologist post or me making up for the lackluster launch because I am happy with the launch because all I want is Zelda. But do you think some devs refused to launch alongside zelda?

Having just one platform was supposed to overload us with Nintendo games!!

What happen?

Then maybe if you're Nintendo, you could wait before you put out an image like this and let a narrative form:

That's just PATHETIC!

I feel like some special breed of gamer where I can buy a new console and still critique it's dumb mistakes with objectivity.

Imagine how it would've been if they rushed it even further. If they waited until the summer and launched with Splatoon 2, Mario Kart, Zelda, Arms, 1-2 Switch, and whatever other third party games, there'd be slightly less backlash.

WiiU sold out at launch though, it was the drought right after that killed momentum, and Switch does not have that problem because there are several heavyhitters lined up in the months afterwards.
LOL what?? The switch lineup is barren as fuck all year , what lineup are you seeing? There is nothing there to keep this system selling after launch in any big numbers. Everything sells out at launch, it means nothing.,

Really. It's baffling that some can support not having more of what you bought the device for.

I can see dealing with having Zelda for now. I can't see making an argument for NOT having more of what you'd want.

He/she is right tho judging by trailers and gameplay this is gonna be the best Zelda game ever so ofcourse Nintendo is confident in that game.

Did you see social media stats on it and e3? The hype for Zelda is HUGE.

Amazes me how out of touch people are...zelda is awesome, I want it too, but it is not a huge ip, look at its sales numbers.....It is not near enough.

People still defending nintendo though having a barren lineup again, why? They are not your friends.

Any word on VC games available at launch? They could lessen the blow with a couple 1080p GameCube releases. People seem to want Super Mario Sunshine. Luigi's Mansion would be nice as well.

No bald cap? Lies!
Launch day is very poor. Zelda is beyond huge, but it shouldn't be alone. 1 2 Switch does not look worth $50 at all. Maybe if it were a WarioWare game I would pick it up like I did Smooth Moves at launch for the Wii, but it aint that by a wide margin. Never understood Bomberman and the rest look like trash.

The system does look to have the makings of a very strong first year though which might be more important. That said, while I think ARMs looks great I'm just not getting it due to its strength being multiplayer which means dropping another 120 bucks for an extra set of JoyCons and a charging Grip, which ain't happening right now. MK8 comes out in late April which will be a must have. Snipperclips also sometime in March looks like a great little title, and it's priced correctly at $20. I Am Setsuna might be another good game, though it's not new. Fast RMX looks decent, but dependent on pricing for me as I'm not a huge racing fan to spend 50-60 on it. Lego City Undercover will do very I think. Rime looks pretty great. Disgaea 5 is super niche, but has my interests.

Who knows what we'll hear at E3. SSB has be on the slate, we had pretty confident rumors about BG&E2, whatever Retro is working on and hopefully more indie games I hope coming over.

Then Splatoon 2 in the summer, Skyrim in the fall and Mario for the holidays makes for some great games. Having a Zelda at launch and Mario for the first holiday season is pretty great, they just need to make sure they have good content in between. We have a few set already, hopefully they have more unannounced.

steady stream of info.

We still live in the real world, though.

Is a Mario Kart port really that exciting for those of you that already own the game on Wii?

Yes because the Wii game is 8+ years old :)

Even those of us who own the Wii U game enjoy new courses (the game's bread and butter), new drivers/vehicles and the return of proper battle mode finally.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I think he's saying he doesn't believe that Nintendo and 3rd Parties are okay with people having 0 interest in getting the system at launch.

I dont know about Nintendo - but 3rdpartys are okay with it otherwise they would have stuff ready on launch. Again - they got burned big during WiiU launch which was launch during holiday and the successor of a very popular console. Not going through this crap again - especially if most customers already spending 400 for Zelda and the system.
Yes. Example below. A lack of games is NOT a positive.

Where did i say it was a positive ? Its just how its is - reality.
Your example would be like me saying 3rdPartys didnt sell shit on WiiU and you showing me data that Mass Effect sold 13k copies trying to prove me wrong.

More content is always a good thing - but thats not the target for this launch.

If you want to look at the bigger picture you also have to realize that we only have January and the system hasnt even launched yet. There will be plenty of event for Nintendo and 3rdPartys to announce stuff to push the system further.

If you want the system and 3rd to be successful you would have to agree that it doesnt make much sense to launch on a 0 installed base userbase next to Zelda with a ambitious title. It didnt work last time and with the current price strategy i dont think it would this time.

I can only speak for myself in saying yes. Mario Kart 8 would have been the best game in the series if it had a proper battle mode and while I ain't too happy that I gotta buy a brand new game to get that, it comes with the added bonus of portability.

I don't really know whether or not the latter is a sentiment that is shared by a significant amount of people, but for me having these games on a platform like the Switch is appealing since the console itself becomes a selling point for a lot of the games that will be coming out.
