I'm really sad I just couldn't get my review together in time for the embargo being lifted. Life and site outages really put a damper on that. Hopefully I'll get it done in the next day or two.

However, the game is a good 5 out of 5 in my book. It's not a "solid" 5 as there are some shortcomings but the overall fun, the story, and the variety of things to do more than make up for those.

Super happy to see the series get positive press from many major outlets. Hopefully some will give the series a chance since this is a fresh starting point.

I gather the US release retains the japanese voice acting--any chance it also features a japanese subtitle track? Honestly that'd be tops for me to use it for language learning. If not, I may just buy it in the JP PSN store

Is this the perfect game to jump in? If so, what game should I start next? I know the release order, but still im not sure.

Yep it is, the game is set chronologically before all the other games so no prior knowledge is needed :)

After 0 there is a remake of the original coming out in summer, Yakuza Kiwami so I'd wait for that!

Yes.
Then you should wait to Kiwami release to play 1 and 2 remakes on PS4 and then 3, 4 and 5...on PS3, you have one?
And after that just wait for 6 localization !
A tip : play a different game between Yakuza entries to not burnout. Especially between 4 and 5!

this game has no english dub. but i think you can't choose subtitles back to japanese

WOW. I've always wanted to play Yakuza. I remember the very first japanese import review I read here on GAF.

Tell me that the other Yakuza titles will be remade/remastered for PS4? This looks truly excellent.

It's important for me that there are not english voices. I HATE HATE HATE english voice overs in japanese games/anime. It's never good. Besides Cowboy Bebop. That's the only exception!

There's only a remake for the original.

We can all hold hands together and prey that the best Yakuza game, Yakuza 2, gets a remake too.

Man we need this !
I dont know why but I really thought this would be on Kiwami too.
Was the WiiU that got a remaster from Yakuza 1 and Yakuza 2 only in Japan right?
Fuck if someone enjoy 0 and wants to play all the mainline games will have to buy a PS2 and a PS3 !

They use a different scale than everywhere else pretty much. Their site says 5, middle, is average. So in other words it'd be a 7/10 in a conventional rating scale.
Yeah I don't buy that. I have seen some games with the higher ratings on EGM and they have nothing on Yakuza 0. It's either a bad all around review, a bad reviewer who was too lazy to explore the game or done to attract clicks. Pick one (or more) of the above (a and b are my choices).

While opinion is subjective and I understand as a game Yakuza 0 isn't a series for everyone there's a couple things I disagree with in the EGM review:

The series’ popularity began to slip off in the West over the years, but those most passionate about the 3D beat ‘em up fought to keep the games coming to the States

The popularity didn't slip off in the west, it was barely there for the first couple of games and didn't start picking up until the more recent games. Hell I remember when after the first game the second released at a discount price since it also was coming out at the very end of the PS2 lifecycle.

For what it’s worth, Majima’s fighting styles are more interesting with a greater level of flourish in the combo design—such as one based on Capoeira—

It's not based on Capoeria, it's based on breakdancing. You learn it from breakdancers, it's called Breakin' and the trainers do break dance battles with you.

These upgrades do add some flavor to the fighting system—making a style more complex the further one progresses in it—but the problem is that many of the upgrades are passive, working automatically and leaving player involvement to a minimum

There are passive upgrades, though there's just as many that aren't. Ones that have new combos, different evasions, etc. There are also trainers for each style that teach you new moves. While it's not to the level of action games like DMC, it's strange to me to see this complaint merely because it's certainly miles above the popular Assassin's Creed style where you hit an attack button and wait for the prompt to reverse. The fact that the reviewer says that he's a fan of beat em up games this complaint also felt strange.

At least that's what stood out as strange to me.
