Resident Evil 7 - Early Impressions Thread (MARK SPOILERS!!)

Is there something more like Mercenaires? Because even if the game ends up great, I am not sure I can justify buying a 9-13 hours long game at full price.

There's no proper additional mode in the base game, though there is Madhouse Mode which is basically an arranged version of RE7 with various changes to item location, enemies, additional elements and changes. There's also a number of unlockable items, weapons, and other neat things, and two endings with some scene changes/different encounters based on which ending you're going towards, etc.

For better or worse, it seems the bonus modes have been regulated to DLC stuff, though they'll be releasing post-launch, and there is a free piece of DLC coming to everyone who owns RE7 in May.

I’m playing on a Pro, sold my PS4 so I can’t do a 1:1 comparison. On the Pro, RE7 VR does look pretty good if you don’t compare it directly to the TV version. They did some smart things with the interface and the lower resolution is only really apparent if you get up close to certain objects or look at the hair of another character. I also thought the game was too dark on PSVR and the settings wouldn’t let me adjust brightness/contrast in VR mode.

As for the demos, I played Kitchen in VR and The Beginning Hour on TV. Both on a standard PS4. The final game looks better and more polished than both those experiences (on a Pro). If you liked how intense the Kitchen Demo felt and want more of that “up close, in your face, body horror”, RE7 VR delivers it consistently.

Oh, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect from RE7 either and went in with some hesitation. If you liked old-school RE (before RE4) and don’t mind some really gory imagery, the game is great. Think of it as a 2017 interpretation of the RE1 formula, inspired by Tobe Hooper instead of George A. Romero, that takes some ideas from Outlast/Amnesia/Condemned/etc. instead of Alone in the Dark.

Thanks for the info, it does sound great. Main reason for wanting to get this is for my friends. When Outlast came out I had them all come round and was really fun watching them play through it.

One of my friend's reactions to these types of games is absolutely brilliant and can't wait to put him on it. On PT he threw the controller down and refused to move the character forward once he got to a certain point so I can't wait to get his reactions on this as even from my brief time on the demo on PSVR last night I can tell this is going to push him over the edge. Also it will be the first time he has even tried a PSVR so nothing like throwing someone in at the deep end lol.

The DLC at least sounds like it could be really good. I'm very intrigued by Ethan Must Die mode in particular.
It sounds like a further remixed take on the campaign, which will do wonders for replayability. I think in these classic style RE games, remixed item and enemy locations do just as much--if not more--for replays as increased difficulty.

Haha, you're gonna love it and your friend will nope out of the headset and hate you for a while ;)

And yup, I did the same thing with the Kitchen Demo and a couple of friends. Freaked them all out even after they knew what was coming from watching someone else play. It's that "up in your face" thing that RE7 VR excels at.

Genuinely disappointed with SimplyGames right now. They charged me a while ago yet I've still not received any kind of dispatch. I'll be sticking with TGC next time.

Just heard back from CDKEY support. They said, and I quote; "Rest assured that you will get a key that will work in your region". Also, they said that keys usually ship the day before release and to expect an email.

Pre-ordered the UK physical PC copy so I could have the case, planned to sell the code for cheap. But now I'm not sure if it's region free or not. Any thoughts?

I'm still on the fence on this whole VR thing.
I need someone to convince me of playing the game with PSVR on a normal PS4.

Does it take a HUGE dip in quality when compared to PSVR on a pro?

A few people I know have received it from them already.

Really? I knew I should of went with them lol

Yeah, that's where I got my copy from - was charged on Thursday, went out on Friday and arrived yesterday. Tuesday releases are always a lottery for me though - Forza Horizon 3 arrived the Friday before release whereas FFXV didn't show up until the day after. At least with Friday releases you know if you order online it'll be the day before or day of release.

My impressions after playing the game for about 4 hours on a regular PS4:

- Graphics vary from bad to pretty good. Some stuff like the characters look pretty realistic while some of the objects in the house look rather unfitting for this console generation. Also some of the textures are washed out when looking at them from a short distance. It seemed to me that sometimes the game wouldn't load several parts of individual rooms leading to some of the objects being a pixelated mess. My reasoning for this is that I saw one framed picture on a wall turning from pixelated to being quite presentable after a while.

- Loading is a mixed bag. It took more than two minutes to get into the game when I was testing it. But there seem to be no loading screens when playing except for
entering tapes
and dying of course.

- The atmosphere is pretty good. Most of the setting is supported by a great composition. While the graphics might not be the best it still 'looks' pretty good.

- About the horror elements: Initially I thought the game might be too scary for me. But it's not nearly as scary as you would expect, escpecially for a first person game. There are a few jump scares but nothing to be worried about.

- The beginning is pretty good. It sets up the story in a good way and has some cool surprises. People who played the demo
will feel right at home
.

- So far the few puzzles I came across were really easy. This might change in later parts of the game of course.

- Pacing is great. It's a nice mix of story bits, exploration and combat/action. So far the action is not overwhelming, but it's there.

- I remember a lot of people asking if there are any weapons in the game. The answer is yes and there are quite a lot it seems. Only 4 hours in and I already got these weapons (listed in order of obtaining):
Knife
Pistol
Shotgun
Some sort of little flamethrower
Magnum
Grenade launcher
Some of them are optional. You have to find and unlock them.

- I have only encountered like 3 or 4 different types of enemies. They are all set in a different setting, so you know what to expect where.

- The
3
bosses I fought thus far were pretty much all the same gameplaywise. The
second
boss was the hardest for me and it took me 2 or 3 tries until I was able to beat it. I expect the opinions about them to be polarizing to be honest.

I guess that's all I can say without the usage of heavy spoilers.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions about the game. Maybe I'll be able to answer them.

Alright, so I think I'm maybe half way thru now. I will say this game has invoked feelings of all sorts of horror movies. From Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw, Saw, and even the new Blair Witch, yet it's still super Resident Evil in gameplay and story beats/notes.

I've hit a point where the tone of what's happening has changed a little bit and it's not as scary but interesting set up and of course varied. I dig it but I hope it goes back to being Uber creepy soon. It's the section involving
Lucas

Overall still really, really loving this. Still barely making it thru sometimes. I'll be good on ammo and then really low after encounters. Same with health. I've had to avoid enemies complete due to low scarcity of items and it's been a "holy fuck, please let me find items" sort of feeling.

ive heard the evil dead comparison a few times, could you specify, without spoilers what makes you think that ?

Well it's due to some lines Jack says but also the level of gore and so the way stuff happens in the opening moments that really gave me that vibe. It's hard to describe further, especially one particular thing that really gave me that feeling, but you'll know it when it's happening. Totally unexpected for me as well. Jack lines more Evil Dead 2 in style, with the intro reminding me more of Evil Dead 1.

The game is ment for VR, where you need locked 60 fps. The graphics of course will take a dip because of that.

I agree that texture loading is bad, maybe if I changed to an SSD it will be better?

Hey Slasher, just curious how many hours you have so far on your playthrough?

Did my first speedrun and I finished it in about 2:45 hours. I think a good hour or more can be cut from it.

Was it 3:45 or 2:45? I think 2, but I gave my copy to my friend so I can't be sure.

Quick question to those around halfway through - where do you get hold of the
grenade launcher? I've managed to accidentally craft some incendiary grenades in the greenhouse and want to make sure I didn't miss the weapon

Okay cool sounds good. I play super slow usually and explore on an almost OCD level lol, so I'm hoping to get at least 15 hours my first time through.

Wouldn't be surprised if you end up closer to 20

Did you just run through it on easy? Did you still get infinite ammo for that time?

That depends on what mode are you playing. Since you asked, I think it's not Madhouse mode.

I'll only give you a hint.

Do you have the crow key?

How is the game meant for VR, when by all reports, Capcom implemented it as a secondary feature? 60fps is a Sony mandate, so if the graphics in VR mode have to be scaled back for that to happen, then that's what it will take. But it's still just a secondary mode.

The impressions here seem to be around 12ish hours

For all of the complaints that it's not 15 - 20 hours (God no!), I actually just replayed RE2 again after not having replayed it since '98, after playing each scenario and unlocking all of the extras. Beat it in three hours and ten minuntes. I mean hell, if you count all four scenarios together at that rate, it's still just barely over twelve hours.
