Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Looks like you're paying 90% just for the stick, the rest for the pi or whatever they're using inside, as the rest are roms you can get yourself.

I mean, you could just buy two xbox 360 fightsticks or something for < $100 each.

Quick question folks, I've just ordered a Pi3 and will be looking to setup RetroPi when it arrives. As far as Playstation controllers go, will it let me use a Dualshock 4? I'm not bothered whether it's bluetooth connected, infact I'm quite happy to use a 3 metre cable. However I'm unsure if Dualshock 4 will work or if Dualshock 3 is the way to go?

Dual Shock 4 will work. I have used them wired before with RetroPi. Bluetooth might work too, I have not tried that though.

Does anyone have this? Or have any thoughts on it?

It's called the Varcade Station. And comes loaded with 680 games

Specs are...

For 457.73 CAD ($349.00 USD) I'm highly considering it.

There's another company from here in Canada (http://retroactivearcade.ca/) that sells a similar product called Padora's Box.

645 games for $450.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Looks nice, but that's probably a 30$ raspberry Pi and a 150$ (?) controller plus roms that are not more legal than those you can download yourself.
Not even sure the controller is very high quality, you can probably grab a couple Hori's or Qanba for less than 200$.

BTW I'm still mad I passed on this

$_57.JPG

couple years ago you could grab one for 80$ from Amazon in my country but i couldn't find opinions or reviews anywhere and assumed it was trash (the price did seem very low). Which it might still be, but for 80$ i should have taken the risk. Now you can't find those anywhere.

Those buffalo snes usb controller prices are expensive up here in Canada... wow.

Ugh, did they just go up in price? I've been planning on buying one and have been keeping an eye on them on Amazon. I could have sworn they were all around the $20-25 CDN range with shipping at the end of Dec, now they're all around $30.

Had anyone had any luck running CPS2 games on a Raspberry Pi 3? I'm running Retropie in it and so far have come up snake eyes with all pre-installed arcade emulators.

You using Final Burn Alpha? Because that should make it work with the right ROMs.

so after digging on this thread, I came to conclusion that there's no best hardware/software combination for N64 emulation? maybe just the ODROID XU4 am I right?

Correct, if you want better PSP, Dreamcast, N64 you are better off going the ODROID XU4, its factually the better hardware and 2-4 times faster than the Pi 3. It has a version of Lakka and Recalbox available to it.

Heres a couple vids testing it out

I could honestly make something like this for less than £100 honestly. The company does it for probably less and probably does not own the game licenses.

it's a bad bad deal, stay away from it and make your own.

Didn't know there was a thread for this :D I want to do a retro portable console like this:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1779343
But adding 2 analog sticks and more buttons for saving loading states, any advice or tutorials on it?

Yes, possible, get a Arduino with Leonardo support, use keyboard.write to program the buttons and analogue sticks

My Raspberry Pi 3 came in today got it up and running in about 20 minutes but there was no sound looked around found the fix took me about ten more minutes to get that worked out but all and all not too hard I'm going to buy another one for my brother and put all his favorite on and give it to him for his birthday.
Thanks Lasthope106 I went with the Vilros Raspberry Pi 3 Basic Starter Kit - Clear Case you saved me a few dollars thanks a lot.

Was it edit config.txt and uncomment hdmi_drive=2?

Had to do that for my brothers Pi3 to force the sound to go trough HDMI, the auto setting wasn't working on his TV set.

I had to add that and two other things

You're welcome. Gotta stretch 'em dollars.

What were the other things you had to do? Seems like there's a lot of issues with RetroPie and sound.

I had to set mine to HDMI, and bring the volume down on the mixer to 50% to get rid of weird sounds on Super Mario World. Apparently if that thing goes beyond a certain level it draws too much power and affects other things.

A 5.25v power supply I got this week has been the solution to my intermittent lightning bolt symbol. If you are having issues, grab one.

Now to find the best controllers to use with this thing...

Where did you get it? I bought a Canakit power supply off Amazon and I find my Pi3 has power issues sometimes, but only when I'm actively using my wireless keyboard (Logitech K400). The only other thing I have plugged into it is a Mayflash Wii U Pro Controller adapter.

Semi-related: does using wifi draw significantly more power over using an ethernet cable?

Hey GAF.

I plan on buying this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DMFQZXK/?tag=neogaf0e-20

and a 32GB MicroSD card.

That's all I need right? I want to setup RetroPie on this to mainly play NES, SNES, and some CPS1 / 2 stuff.

Wii U Pro Controller is what I plan to use which is Bluetooth functional, which should work I hope.

Anything else I need?

Just built something similar, but using Recalbox.
That will do it. If you wanted to use Recalbox instead of RetroPi you would need a Bluetooth dongle.

So I am planning on going to buy one of these this weekend from Microcenter and I have a couple of questions. The PI 3 is powerful enough for PS1 games correct? What is the max Micro SD card I can use? I would like to go to 128GB if possible but can live with 64GB if I have to.

Hey guys,

I've finally got all my parts in, going to throw my Pi 3 into a Famicom shell.
Will get things started, but have been considering getting the Power Switch to work with it, through one of these switch circuits made for the Pi:

I'm a stranger to this kind of stuff, though I'm sure I can manage when the time comes, but to get started, can someone tell me the difference between the three switches in the pulldown bar and which one is the one I want?

I"m assuming the direct plug will do, and if I understand correctly, the USB Port version has a standard USB Port for power instead of the micro, but what's going on the picture where there are wires by a light going into the ..uh.. spikey thing on the side? Haha.

edit:

I had to add that and two other things

Is there supposed to be any sound in the menus or anything? I just got mine turned on and set up the controller, and there's no sound yet, though I have no roms loaded yet to know if there's sound there..

If it sounds like I have the problem, could you tell me what you did to fix it?

Thank You

Looking for advice with Recalbox and Mame. I downloaded a Mame set 0.78, but I've found a lot of roms simply don't run, and others run at the wrong aspect ratio.

Also, I have a modded Fighting Stick 3 that I have lent out to a friend. Will it work with Recalbox? And if so, will I need to configure each game's control scheme, or does Mame do all the work for me if it detects a stick?

Thanks!

0.37b5 work best with MAME it seems, for 0.78 try MAME2003 or Final Burn Alpha instead.
I have a PS3 Hori stick that runs flawlessly, yours should be compatible too.

There should be sound when you move from one rom to the next but no sound for anything else. It's should be a click when you move from one rom to the next.

Has anyone had any issues getting Metal Gear Solid to run on RetroPie? As soon as I try to load it from the menu it's just a back screen. I only put Disc 1 on the SD card thinking it would only need that to get going. I'm not sure if I'm missing BIOS or what. =/

Do you have the ps1 BIOS in the BIOS file? (I put the ps1 BIOS in the ps1 rom file as well) If not the game won't run as far as I know.

Might try that tomorrow. I haven't added any BIOS myself yet, however Rival Schools ran fine before hand so I assumed BIOS were already with RetroPie and was unsure what was going on.

So I ordered the 50 dollar Cana kit with a 32gb card, but a review on its Amazon page has me worried, something about the pi not fitting properly in the included transparent case, and that it can break?

Anyone got experience with it?

you definitely need a bios for most PSX games to work properly.

I've put my bios file in /BIOS but the games still refuse to launch. Only gripe I have with the system now really (outside of imperfect n64 emulation)

And I'll say it again, GET A 5.25V power adapter!!!!!!!!

I found mine at a local electronics store. Think Radio Shack but still in business.

Well I installed the BIOS required it's allowing Metal Gear Solid to run now. However I'm getting a really sluggish performance. It's all still default settingsans I haven't tweaked anything yet for fear of making it worse. Having had a quick look online, no one else seems to be having my issues.

ASUS is going into the micro-controller / pc market:

http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/0...-its-raspberry-pi-competitor-with-4k-support/

asustinker1.jpg

Quad core 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A17 CPU
2GB Dual channel LPDDR3 memory
Gigabit LAN and Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR connectivity
802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
4x USB 2.0 ports
40-pin Internal header with 28 GPIO pins
Contact points for PWM and S/PDIF signals
1x 3.5mm Audio jack connection
CSI port for camera connection
DSI port supporting HD resolution
1x HDMI 2.0 port to support 4K resolution
Micro SD port supports UHS-I
Supports Debian OS with KODI
Power supply: 5V/ 2A Micro USB (not included)

The colour coding of the pins is a nice touch.

I guess the Raspberry Pi 4 will have similar specifications whenever they get around to it. Seeing as that Asus PCB is of a similar size and port placement of the Raspberry Pi 3. The significant differences though being higher CPU and Ram for improved performance, as well as a 4K capable HDMI port and Gigabit Ethernet.

I wonder since it runs on Debian, it could possibly support RetroPie out of the box as is. Although the price is somewhat higher than the $35 Raspberry Pi 3, it's also probably has probably 3 times the level of performance.

Also, the GPU is around x4 times better. So emulation of console with 3d graphics should improve a lot.

While it is almost 2x powerful, it really doesn't matter if there isn't any support for the chip platform with ongoing development in terms of distro support.

Take the PINE64, it's amazingly powerful but the lack of support means emulation can only done through an Android OS image and it runs worse than the Pi3 at it's current state.

While Asus is capable of good hardware I'm unsure on software support.
