Completed Space Patrol Luluco today before going to work. Had no idea it was going to be a sequel to Inferno Cop. It's pretty much a love letter to all things Studio Trigger produced up until this point and since I've found myself really enjoying their output, this short series was right up my alley.

[Little Witch Academia TV] – 3

This was my definitely my favourite of the episode of the show so far but unfortunately my impressions of the series as a whole remain negative.

Let's start with the positive. This week's episode was pretty entertaining– which is to say, it was light-hearted and wacky with lots of good faces and silly scenes. Akko got abused by Sucy, Sucy trolled everyone and Diana won the day. Yet, as the episode drew to a close my reaction was ”is that all?" At the moment the show just feel like a pleasant way to kill 20 minutes, rather than anything noteworthy. I'm honestly not sure if I'd be bothering to watch this at all if it didn't have the Little Witch Academia name.

My problem with the series is that it feels incredibly ‘slight' which might have flown for a one-off OVA, doesn't work a complete TV series. Our core trio of girls have extremely simple characteristics and, what's worse, is that they don't play off each other in any interesting ways. Our characters are not only simple, but the things which drive them feel ill defined:

- Akko wants to be like Shiny Chariot, but she never really explains why being like Shiny Chariot is a good thing. What is it about her that should be emulated? For what purpose?
- Sucy...wants to make poisons. Why? What's so important about them that means she can feel fine sacrificing her schoolmates if it means she can get her hands on a rare one?
- Lotte is a straight man, but even a straight man has wants, desires, motivations. Lotte has...glasses.

Let's take a look at this week's episode as an example. Akko really wants to take place in the baton race because of Shiny Chariot having won it before. Sucy wants to take place in the race because the reward is a poison. Lotte isn't a character. The end result is that Sucy ends up spending a lot of energy training Akko. Sucy then works very hard to cheat during the race so that they can have a chance of winning. Then, due to the interactions of a 3rd party, she gets gifted a magical tool to help her nearly win. However, Akko never actually learns to fly. The end.

The problem with the way the above plays out is that it's very boring. It tells us nothing about the characters or their relationships with each other. No one is developed. A weird side plot involving a super boom serves almost no purpose except to awkwardly introduce another wafer-thin character in a very unsatisfying manner. There's not set ups or pay offs for the characters. The very most you could argue is that the scene were Akko wrestles for control of the boom proves that a very persistent girl – but the problem is that the show has already told us that twice this episode. The 1st time was when Akko highlighted all her scars and the 2nd time was when we she endured the harsh trainingfrom Sucy.

Let's consider this alternative, terrible fan-fiction version that I just whipped up to see if it's better:

Akko really wants to compete in the Baton race, but neither Sucy nor Lotte care about it. Lotte later receives a letter from her parents who are concerned that she's been placed under intense scrutiny as a result of the events regarding the entrance ceremony. Lotte's parents were never particularly supportive of her desire to attend Luna Academy, as they feel she lacked sufficient magical talent. Akko persuades Lotte that a good way to demonstrate her magical prowess would be to take place in and win the Baton race. Together, Akko and Lotte strike a bargain of some kind with Sucy to get her on-board for the race. Lotte and Sucy both try wildly contrasting techniques to get Akko flying – Sucy's methods are more extreme, while Lotte's are more cerebral. Akko gets very concerned that none of the techniques are working, but the day eventually approaches where they must compete. Cue some weird, but explainable, combination of Lotte and Sucy's training finally giving Akko the ability to fly. Diana wins anyway because she's the bes', but Akko has learnt a valuable lesson from her two roomates and getting 2nd place is enough to please Lotte and her parents. The end.

Now we can all agree that the above is just some random crap that I knocked out – but hopefully you can see where I am getting at. The problem with the script of the episode is that everyone's motivations just happen to be lined up so that they all do the same thing, which is dull. Ideally all three girls would have their own set of characteristics, their own backgrounds, and all three of them would came at the same idea from different perspectives. They'd bounce off each other, discuss the matter, and then somehow a consensus would emerge. But that would require a lot more work on the script, something that I haven't see any sign of so far.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, what's with these two shots of the Awards Case? Why is Diana's winning photo missing from the top right hand cabinet? What happened to two two trophies with globes on them that should be in the right hand side? Can't the background art team keep track of this stuff? Moreover, what's with all these different trophies when we all know that, according to the photos, there's only one trophy for wining and it's the one with the witch riding the broomstick. Did the background art team to decide to throw in more trophies to make it look better? This is a travesty.

There's strengths to both the original and Brotherhood. It really depends on if you like the true canonical adaptation or the split off point.

REMINDER: Instead of wasting time watching and posting detailed critique on BAD shows which are CASH IN productions made to promote FRANCHISES spawned from SMARTPHONE GAMES, a better use of one's time would be to sit down and watch an AWARD WNNING film by ACCLAIMED filmmaker DENIS VILLENEUVE, like for example, INCENDIES.

Not moe enough for me.

So, Your Name then, yes?

:p

The Handmaiden

It's not directed by Villenueve, but Duckroll this is good shit too. What a great cinematography, the characters are absorbing and plot takes you by force when you won't notice.

And it's almost anime! It has people talking in Japanese, there is
yuri
and lewd scenes. That's like, 85% animeness.

Just re-reading that article I linked to regarding HxH '99 vs HxH '11 and I can immediately tell that the author was too learned to be writing about anime:

...while I appreciate the liberal references to Arabic architecture like the Court of the Lions and the Mosque of Cordoba in the set design here, it looks kinda tacky. In my opinion, such a blatant real-world artistic reference doesn't work for the show's vaguely-defined fantastical setting.
Just the criticism I would have made myself...

Heh. Tamerlane was always bringing up arthouse film directors and seemed to be frustrated when other anime fans didn't know what he was talking about.

My problem with the series is that it feels incredibly ‘slight’ which might have flown for a one-off OVA, doesn’t work a complete TV series. Our core trio of girls have extremely simple characteristics and, what’s worse, is that they don’t play off each other in any interesting ways. Our characters are not only simple, but the things which drive them feel ill defined:

- Akko wants to be like Shiny Chariot, but she never really explains why being like Shiny Chariot is a good thing. What is it about her that should be emulated? For what purpose?

Well that's fairly straightforward in that Akko wants to be a cool witch like Shiny Chariot. How many people want to be a wizard or witch in the Harry Potter universe? That's a big reason why her opinion of Shiny Chariot and her classmates differ. Presumably the magic show was one of the few or first type she saw a witch perform large scale magic like that. Diana is the one who shouldn't have been impressed but maybe the magic Shiny Chariot was doing was relatively unique. This episode kind of hints at that, in that Shiny Chariot was capable of doing magic shows away from the Sorcerer's Stone.
- Sucy...wants to make poisons. Why? What’s so important about them that means she can feel fine sacrificing her schoolmates if it means she can get her hands on a rare one?
- Lotte is a straight man, but even a straight man has wants, desires, motivations. Lotte has…glasses.

Both of those are things are presumably going to be expanded upon. Lotte has an episode dedicated to her in the upcoming couple of episodes with her being a fan of the in-show version of Twilight.
Let’s take a look at this week’s episode as an example. Akko really wants to take place in the baton race because of Shiny Chariot having won it before. Sucy wants to take place in the race because the reward is a poison. Lotte isn’t a character. The end result is that Sucy ends up spending a lot of energy training Akko. Sucy then works very hard to cheat during the race so that they can have a chance of winning. Then, due to the interactions of a 3rd party, she gets gifted a magical tool to help her nearly win. The 1st time was when Akko highlighted all her scars and the 2nd time was when we she endured the harsh training from Sucy.

I will agree that the premise isn't original or exciting however it's how the episode was executed. The race itself is full of cheating, which makes everything better, and had over the top sequences near the end. There were solid character interactions such as between Sucy/Akko and Akko/Diana. Not to mention the episode is funny almost the entire way through.

The episode does serve a number of larger plot functions though. It introduces us to the new trio from LWA2 (in the TV show context) and sets up the devil broom. I presume the devil broom is going to be a recurring item considering at the end Akko essentially unshackled it so it might keep coming back and smacking Akko whenever she tries to ride another broom. It's most likely another item like the Shiny Rod, in that'll help her if she's in trouble. Another minor thing is that the opening scene sets up the relationship dynamic between Ursula and Akko as well.

I don't think every episode needs to further the characters but rather just needs to be entertaining and fun. The trap episode from Kill La Kill (ep 4) didn't further anything along but was great in that it was a hilarious twenty minutes.

I can't remember any of the music in Brotherhood. I still remember the Brothers theme in FMA even though I haven't seen that show in years.

You see I'm kind of reversed. the Brothers Theme from the original is the only thing I remember about that score. I can still hum quite a few themes from Brotherhood.

Need to rewatch this to see if the ending isn't tricking me into putting it too high on the AOTY list.

By anything else, do you mean outer space themed anime featuring adult protagonists? There's Moonlight Mile, but I haven't heard good things regarding that.

Yeah, space-themed, adult-oriented fare. Preferably without anime cliches. I guess there's not much else, aside from LOGH.

I finished HxH '99 TV and heres my take on it compared to HxH '11

You should watch '11. Its easy to make the argument that '99 is the better show in most areas, but '99 suffers from being from...1999. Not in the way its made or directed, but that there isn't a remaster or a blu-ray version. With 2011 you won't have to suffer the quality of the sound or video, and you will get more of the story to boot.

Yamato? It's basically Star Trek. I can't say I cared for it much but it's pretty much universally liked and a technical showpiece.

Yeah I definitely feel like this, they both have their strong points, overall though I have to tip my hat in favour of Brotherhood.

Whilst the original definitely has the better music (But Brotherhood is no slouch) and hits you really hard with emotionally, I enjoyed the my favourite three characters had more screen time than in the original, there was still some comedy then a purely gloomy atmosphere (Though this could be a negative to some) significantly better fights and the close of the series hit the right notes with me. Oh and I did enjoy the manga characters that turned up later on. But I'd consider both excellent shows, the original is definitely more rounded thanks to the fact they didn't rush the beginning half but I'd recommend both shows.

If science fiction is fine then you'll want to watch Space Battleship Yamato 2199 if you haven't already. (The sequel starts in a month!)

I guess if you need your anime to be in 720p then yes, the 2011 anime will satisfy your needs better. Although a properly done BD version of the 1999 anime would turn out well, since it was still cel animation. Hopefully that happens someday.

Yamato 2199 is probably your best bet.

Didn't know there was a sequel coming though, I now have something to watch in the future!

But was is it going to be about.

This is fun only because it has me and my roommate arguing about cliches and our stances of who this guy should end up with. Agreed that he should end up with no one. But if we had to pick we are on opposite ends.

So I decided to pick another show off my PTW "fantasy" list today and this was the one. This was actually a pretty funny first episode that introduces a lot of the characters. We'll see how the story goes for this "stuck in a fantasy world" anime. I just hope none of these loli's get involved with the MC. Like, at all...

I always liked Diana, but the show really does favor her. Truly the best. Pretty nice episode, full of glorious Akko faces. The show seems to focus on the fun side of the affairs and most of the other aspects of the show are on the backside. But for now, this certainly works. We're getting plenty of interactions between the cast, we get to see the world of magic and the plot kind of moves.

But damn, I kind of hate Sucy in this.

Scum's Wish 1-2

This is School Days but updated for a modern audience.

I haven't watched School Days, so my description may not be very accurate, but from what I know it starts like a standard harem/romance, then it gets a bit dark, in a clumsy way, and then just really dark, in a very over the top way...? Scum's Wish is already very different from its premise, it's not your standard romance by any stretch, and while I don't doubt that things will get heated up later, if episode 2 is anything to go by, I just can't see it being even close to what School Days tries to be. Actually, I'm expecting it to maintain it's (mostly) serious tone.. I mean, I'm really liking it, I can see why people find it uncomfortable or very dumb, but it's unfair to compare it to School Days... Even from an art and direction standpoint, it's vastly superior. My apologies if I'm misunderstanding something on your comment...

Well the reason I'm thinking of School Days is because not only are both shows focused on teenage melodrama but there's a big emphasis on the complexity of the relationships, not just on an emotional level but a physical one as well. For example the show seems to be implying that Awaya actually already slept with Akane, the music teacher, sometime in the past. It's not only that though but how brutal the show treats the characters and their feelings. There's a certain sadistic enjoyment seemingly on the part of the author of curbstomping the cast. I can just smell the NTR coming.
Hanabi already has the dead eyes of a yandere, she's halfway there!

So which Waifu camps did you guys end up going?

There will never be another harem anime where the MC screws multiple girls, never mind getting him in bed with 1 of them, lol.

Well I mean, Tenchi GXP....
