"weekly video conference call with game director"

"surprise bundle of Unique Original Vietnam Collectibles"

"actual prop from Apocalypse Now set (Physical & Large)"

"Livetream a Let's Play with a Game Principal"

this picture just screams amateurs. Besides the incredibly small text, the "and more" bubble is even hidden away in the bottom right.

Maybe it's a social experiment to see how quickly people throw money at stuff without critical analysis?

Apparently the prototype teaser is going live around this time next week.

I don't know if I'm going to back it, but I'm curious based on just how weird this whole thing is.

I'm expecting Rambo The Game-levels of crushing disappointment. Or maybe Walking Dead Survival Instinct

Never launch a KS without prototype gameplay footage or a demo.

If you make this mistake in 2017, you will never get even a passing glance from me, let alone my money.

Did you look at the team? How are they supposed to make a demo with no artists and no engineers? They have designers, writers, and producers, but no one that could make something for you to see.

You'd think some of those writers could have spell-checked the KS post.

I am inclined to believe you, but who can say no to amazing rewards such as

  • Military Adviser Patch
  • Limited Edition Do Lung Challenge Coin
  • Captain Benjamin L. Willard's Dog Tags
  • Personalized Dog Tags
  • Secret Radio Broadcasts
  • Vietnam Survival Go Bag
  • TOP SECRET Dossier
  • Air Cav surfboard: Limited Edition
  • "Mangos" (To be announced)
  • Backer choice of American Flag or Camouflage Flask
  • Authentic Vietnam Rucksack
The Air Cav Surfboard really motivates me to invest in this very believable project!

...Isn't that kind of the point of a game developer? To have actual artists and engineers who are able to "make something for you to see"?

I'm sorry, but this Kickstarter is extremely fishy or simply just incompetent.

If the prototype trailer is coming next week. they should have launched the campaign next week.

Aside from the rare exception like Harebrained who have both delivered on past campaigns and proven they can faithfully make gameplay that closely resembles their concept art, never ever back a project that doesn't have gameplay footage

That should be the number one golden rule if you're interested in backing games. It doesn't matter who the developers are or what the project is.

The fact that the "pitch" is talking heads and clips from the movie is an even bigger red flag. Especially when they supposedly have enough of a prototype to do a trailer

My favorite movie to become a game?

I'm mad skeptical. My heart may break.....

I'm in.

Wasn't BioShock kind of a Apocalypse Now game? I loved BioShock because it gave me similar vibes.

Ahh man what in the world is this..!?

I'll take a look at the KS but I don't know, the skepticism is high within me. I just wish 'em luck.

Great movie, but don't think it will translate well to an RPG video game.

While in most RPGs you are fighting to save the land from an evil power, here you are fighting in order to surf on better waves...

Oh yeah, I really like that they're *only* using screenshots from the film, so they have absolutely zero art or visual concepts *and* that they are using a online-accessible picture of Francis Ford Coppola from 1978/9.

From the page:

The creative and production leads, prototype team, and American Zoetrope have already spent several thousand man-hours in pre-production,

Several thousand man-hours for this shitty KS pitch? Just screenshots from the film with some text over, yet filled with grammar and spelling mistakes and nonsensical backer rewards and goals.

WTF, completely out of the blue.

Has the potential to be pretty amazing if done right, but yeah, we have to see that prototype first.

Indeed - but:

that's dope. Won't back it but will keep a close eye out for it

"From the visionary director of One From the Heart, Jack, and Twixt comes the video game adaption of a nearly 40 year old movie with a massive following and legendary status"

I think I just did their
Honest
Trailer for them

I'm withholding judgement until I see something.

Some of the ideas sound kinda cool, but attaching Apocalypse Now to it seems a bit odd. Maybe the developers saw the Friday the 13th game Kickstarter and decided to add a licenced property onto an existing game idea?

I dunno. It seems like the knives are out for this Kickstarter already, but it might be a bit premature.

I'll probably throw in the minimum $25 as a curiosity at some point. No real skin off my nose.

Never launch a KS without prototype gameplay footage or a demo.
This is not actually financially or logistically possible for a lot of developers.

I'm in.

Just came to my senses and stopped myself from supporting this.

After reading the Glixel interview, I realized this was going to be like that Scarface game, or the ones based on The Godfather, in that it would really do little of invoke the spirit of the film, and will probably instead just be a regular-ass game tied to an IP relevant only in name.

A Survival Horror RPG in which you make your own decisions is not Apocalypse Now.
I'll need to see more stuff.

That does seem odd. I mean if they're basically able to make a trailer right now, isn't it counter-intuitive to start the campaign without it? Given how people aren't just throwing money at crowdfunding nowadays?

EDIT: Nevermind, the pitch is just so bad that it's making me paranoid

[Hell, Josh Sawyer isn't saying anything about this at all on his Twitter.]

I'm watching Apocalypse Now right this second. Weird coincidence.

Skeptical this will live up to the film, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

New update. With some interesting info:

Seems American Zoetrope got in touch with Rob Auten about making the game, rather than the devs contacting AZ for the licence.

They also approached publishers who either said the property was too old, or they wanted to make it a standard FPS shooting gallery.

Such a weird, weird thing.

Coppola's wine not paying the bills? I really don't understand why he would show interest in games out of the blue like this.

It's a joke because Spec-Ops the Line is basically Apocalypse Now: The Game, in the same way that Apocalypse Now is Heart of Darkness: The Movie.

I'd be interested in this if the Kickstarter were less suspicious.

Yeah I know it's inspired by Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness and love it for that, but I will gladly take a Vietnam set RPG by people who worked on New Vegas that go after the same themes.

If you cannot keep your scope small enough that you can't put together (at the very least) some footage of gameplay prototypes, you are probably already setting yourself up for failure.

The gameplay pitch sounds fantastic, but this campaign is a complete mess. Red flags alllll over the place.

Nope.

I think they set themselves up for failure when they said they want to make a video game adaption of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of all time and all they need is 900k. Who are they, Activision?

This is like that kickstarter for that kid that wanted to license the Star Wars IP from Disney to make an RPG. Completely unrealistic with no hope of reaching step 2

I'm not sure there are enough video game playing people with large sums of money that know/care about Apocalypse Now.

Guess we'll see.

Oh boy this trailer is going to be comin in hot

Actually, calling it a game prototype is overselling it. It's a Work-in-progress Prototype that sounds more like a pitch video.

https://www.framestore.com/work/apocalypse-now-game

"A cross-disciplinary team of AAA game developers, motion picture professionals and interactive creatives are coming together to create this truly unique experience. Led by Creative Director Rob Auten, Framestore VFX artists and Ringling College of Art and Design produced a prototype video illustrating early visual representations of an Unreal Engine 4-rendered Apocalypse Now."

The thing I like the most is the damn realistic development time of 3+ years.

This thing's not going to hit 900K, unless the prototype is amazing. But given how poorly this Kickstarter seems to have been put together, I doubt that.

Couldn't it have been The Raid instead? LOL

Apocalypse Now is a far superior and more important film, both are good, but unless this game is a masterstroke, something like The Raid is a much better fit.
