The LEGO Batman Movie |OT| You ever stepped on a LEGO in the pale moonlight?

How much Two-Face was there?
There's not a lot of any Batman villain who isn't Joker aside from a few lines each. I wouldn't go in if you're expecting the spotlight to be on Batman's rogues gallery. Kind of a bummer, but I still ended up enjoying myself. You can tell the people behind it are big fans of the series.

Harley has a lot more lines than most Batman villains and is also is important to the plot, but yeah everyone else has maybe one or two lines.

"Meow meow, your in, meow meow." Lol

And that was Zoe Kravitz.

Gotham is built on top of a thin plate with nothing underneath it, referring to the table the kid plays on.

Not only that, but:
the Phantom Zone makes little sense as a major plot device until you realize that it is literally the kids toy chest. That's why so many non-Batman villains come out of it. The movie is literally the "Batman fights a T-Rex RAWR" moment of our childhoods.

Huh, that actually makes a lot of sense as to why those villains appear.

"My names Richard, but everyone calls me Dick!"
"People can be mean like that..."

I lost it at that line.

My entire theater died at that line. Laughed through the next 20 seconds and missed dialogue at it, lol.

The LEGO Batman Movie is a return to a wacky world established three years ago in one of the best animated films ever made. It makes sense that there's no way it could live up to that film's quality, but it's still pretty good on its own terms. The comedy in this film works incredibly well, and the story is fun pulp. The voice cast is uniformly good, with no stand-outs, except for possibly Galifianakis. Unfortunately, he stands out in a negative sense, not really ever feeling like the actual Joker. The film's emotional core works well too, although sometimes it comes off as a bit forced.

The biggest issue of the film is impossible to go into without spoiling, but it has to do with it taking more from the second word of its title than necessarily needed or wanted. Also, it naturally has more action than its predecessor, but since it's still impossible to really decipher LEGO fight scenes, it comes off as a bore if there's no jokes during the fights. The script also shares its story structure with the original Lord/Miller film a bit too much, and feels somewhat derivative thanks to that.

The LEGO Batman Movie cannot really be broken down that much. It's a very solid comedy with stunning animation (although the lack of the water LEGO effects is extremely missed) and a story that functions. However, the flaws are also impossible to ignore. Still, Gotham City with this Batfamily is a joy to experience, and thus, The LEGO Batman Movie still deserves a huge commendation, and allows hope to still thrive in this LEGO-cinematic-universe-thing. A very good time.

I liked the movie quite a bit! But a coupled of things soured me.

Other than using Will Arnett's take on the Batman character, there's really nothing "Lego" about this movie. The Lego Movie was very very much about Legos, poking fun at the different "dimensions", it being a repository for really obscure Lego references, having a fairly deep message about creativity that was central to both the main and the "meta" narrative, and yes the "meta" narrative elevating the movie to a whole new level.

Lego Batman did a lot of the same but with a lot less gusto. It poked fun at other Batman universes (but doesn't really have anything to do with Lego), it was a repository for really obscure Batman references (but doesn't really have anything to do with Lego), and the messages, while certainly nice, really don't have anything to do with Lego. So it really aped the formula but without any of the context. The fact that this was a Lego movie is completely aesthetic. Not to say they should've done the "meta" narrative again, since that's really just one thing they can do once and that's it. But I was waiting to see if they were gonna do anything interesting to justify the "Legoness" of the movie and it never came.

Once you get to the
Phantom Zone, they throw in a bunch of random villains much like the original Lego Movie threw in a bunch of random characters as Master Builders. It made sense because it was a kid playing with his dad's obsessive collection, but here it's literally just random shit. It felt like they really wanted to recreate that aspect of the original Lego Movie, but in this context it just doesn't fit.

And I realize this has completely nothing to do with the actual movie, but the trailer for the Ninjago Lego Movie kinda soured me on the whole experience before it even started. You can see the shameless milking coming from a mile away. Like dude I haven't even seen the second movie and you're already trying to sell me on seeing the third...? And it didn't help that it's basically the same humor and style, like they take one "universe" and lay a thin narrative and the same type of storytelling on top of it. This is gonna turn into the Assassin's Creed of movie franchises, isn't it? :(

If it works for Marvel why wouldn't it work here?

Saw this tonight. Very good movie. It's very tough to live up to first one, since it set a never before seen precedent, but I had a great time watching this.

One of my favorite little underrated moments was when Batman tells Robin to stay where he is, and he casually locks/plants himself on the lego pieces that make up the floor.

Oh, and Doug Benson as Bane. If you listen to Doug Loves Movies you know why that's amazing.

I just thought it was an amazing parody of Tom Hardy.

Loved it. What kind of mad man puts in a fucking Gleaming the Cube reference?

It's for the parents who are older and actually remember old Christian Slater movies

My vote goes to the
I'm Gonna Loot
guy. Laughed my hide off at that bit.

Yeah that was fucking hilarious. This movie is definitely a 10/10 cause I got most of the old Batman references. Like Eggman. Wtf kind of villain is Eggman?

Saw it tonight. The movie got worse the further it went on, I was rolling my eyes a bit here and there about the family stuff. Loved the callbacks to previous series, especially the original tv version. Overall okay movie, but no where near as good as The Lego Movie.

I love how this film very blatantly was making fun of Batman's more whimsical villains in the context of comics trying to push grit.

At the end of the day you have to chalk it up to everyone involved wants to make money. Ninjago is 100% LEGO's ip. I'm sure when they were working out deals going forward after the LEGO movie the Ninjago movie was a high priority for LEGO for its own business.

LEGO movie was to LEGO as LEGO Batman was to Batman. Where else are you going to get that movie if not in the LEGO universe?

It will be interesting to see if there could ever be a deal worked out for a movie on by far LEGO's biggest money making theme, LEGO Star Wars.

I have a feeling Disney would never let an outside studio do Star Wars, even a parody one.

Wasn't it confirmed that the only reason they got the Star Wars cameo in The LEGO Movie was because the deal was done before Lucas sold?

Disappointing. The Batman schtick was great as comic relief in the Lego Movie, but it can't carry a movie. This movie wasn't very funny and I found myself wondering when it would end.

I loved it!

What a fantastic film, I lost it at the part where the joker was being called out on never beating Batman and also the bit where it flashed over all the batman films.

Utterly brilliant.

I ... thought it was very mediocre?

Beside the reference to master builders, the Lego shtick was pretty disconnected, there were some funny puns but most of the good ones were seen in the trailer, and the main message of the film was both unrelated to the nature of the movie (about pure creation) and seen about 10 million times before when related to Batman.

The movie really felt like a way to peddle Warner franchises (with a few randoms added in the mix thanks to the BBC and Universal) with little rime or reason.

Very disappointing, after having high hopes due to the trailer, and the direction was really having trouble handling the amount of chaos towards the end (Miller &Lord were seriously missed).

6/10, because the kids liked it.

A hilarious movie, me and my friends were cracking up for the majority of it. Especially with those jabs at the latest DC movies.

So wait, Fox Force 5 was a "Kill bill" reference right? Also, the intro and outro sequences were fucking hilarious. When he said
DC, the house that Batman built
I was dead.

It sounds like you wanted this to be The Lego Movie 2.

This is the funniest animated movie I've seen in years. Overall I think the LEGO Movie is a better movie, but from a sheer comedic standpoint this movie blows away any animated comedy in years.

The amount of Batman references was amazing and I loved when Alfred said about Batman's past crisi and is basically reviewing all his movies "and that bizarre one in 1966".

I thought it was fantastic. The humor was just as good as the Lego Movie, if not better, and in some ways it excelled as a Batman movie beyond all its predecessors. I mean, for being so light hearted, it sure examined Bruce's psyche in a much more poignant, thoughtful way than most live action incarnations.

Saw this today! It was thoroughly ok. Had some on-point jokes, but most fell flat.

Still, I continue to be disturbed by
the way they insist on portraying Barbara as a love interest.

Personally this is the best comedy I've seen in years. Fantastic all around! Really great references and attention to detail, even in the background. I lost it at
"reckoning"
and
"I did something!"
😂

I really liked the Movie.... was smiling for most of it, with of course with laughs.

Was a real roller coaster... couldn't imagine watching it in non IMAX 3D... was so much going on, I'm glad I passed on watching it on RealD 3D... I'm sure it would've been a blury mess.

I wouldn't really recommend it to some serious person who likes to critique films.

I'm sure kids would like it even though some of the jokes are lightning quick...so much action going on, on the screen.

Saw this last night, started strong and gradually declined until the mediocre third act. Really surprised people like it as much as they do, its a clear dip in consistency from where Lego Movie was.

For someone who couldn't stand the Lego movie... Will I enjoy this?

if you couldn't stand it probably not. i thought the Lego movie was mediocre and i really enjoyed this one.
it banks a lot on batman jokes and nostalgia, if you aren't into either, give it a pass.

Love the first half, the slower second half isn't quite as strong as Lego Movie IMO.
However, I do appreciate that they try to pull that kinds of depth like Lego Movie did.

For someone who couldn't stand the Lego movie... Will I enjoy this?

I doubt it.

speaking of which, how is Zach Galifanakis in the film? the trailers leave a lot to be desired in regards to his delivery

I thought the Joker's delivery was terrible - same with Harley. It isn't because they were different either - I just found them really weak. I didn't know it was Galifinakis & Slate until I checked after.

I absolutely loved Ellie Kemper though - instantly recognizable and bubbly. I thought Mariah Carey was also fine.

SPOILER]Superman was bragging about putting Zod in the Phantom zone, Joker enters the phantom zone and releases the cameo villains from WB and Universal, but where's Zod?!
This bothered me so much! They literally devoted screen time to showing him getting sent there and there was no sign of him.

How much Two-Face was there?

Almost none. I think there may have just been one line.

Not only that, but:

This is.....wow. Yeah, that's a great theory actually. Well said.

Unrelated, but I can't tell you how badly I want The LEGO Group to make a set featuring
Zan & Jayna
. It was awesome seeing them and
Gleek
during the party scene.

Funny movie, and I thought it worked surprisingly well as a satire of Batman, superheroes, and blockbuster movies in general. Have to say though, for a "kids' movie" or "family movie," my daughter was kind of bored with it. Almost all the jokes seem like they were meant for adults.
