You say that, but then you look at the post history and.... yikes.

What do you mean Yikes? Going to post something of substance or just on a little witch hunt?

So Scalebound situation then. Now they are left to be a god of war factory.
Please understand it is best for gamers.

It is nothing like scalebound...at all. This game was never even shown to the public nor even officially announced.

So announcing then cancelling Scalebound is what caused the heat? Not the game getting cancelled but the fact that it was announced first?

Should have cancelled Horizon and gone with this instead.

Dinosaurs over robot dinosaurs any day. Plus, Santa Monica has a pretty good track record. Guerilla ... Not so much.

Maybe the game wasn't coming along the way Sony expected it to. It's not like they didn't give it a shot.

The idea is that they marketed the game on not one but three different occasions including three press conferences. That was probably enough for some people to invest in the console. Now they own the console with no game on the horizon.

Really feels like Sony took way more risks under Kaz Hirai and Ken Kutaragi compared to Andrew House. I've never seen them so trigger happy in laying off staff than these last few years. Evolution Studio's, SSM, San Diego Studio, Superbot, Liverpool, Sony London, Guerilla Cambridge, Zipper, and it keeps climbing.

Well, of course they're more trigger-happy now versus then. The gaming market has changed to become unrecognizable over that time.

It was too close to Horizon obviously. In fact I bet some of the ideas went into horizon anyway.

Maybe. That didn't stop them from producing both Last of Us 2 and Days Gone, though. If there was room for both, and if both were market-ready, I think they'd stay behind both. But it probably didn't make the SSM team any less nervous that their project would survive once they started hitting on problems.

I refuse to believe a talented team like Santa Monica would've created a total stinker right after making God of War 3.

Well, games don't get cancelled only because they're bad. Sometimes, the project just isn't working. Not enough focus, not the design style that's jiving with the current market, not the right gameplay balance, not the best flow in combat, not enough or too much territory for the play concept at hand, not the best atmosphere or shared interest level in the office, not the right budget for the scale of the project, not enough fun...

Some fundamental choices in a project sometimes make it incredibly difficult to make a change halfway through production, and sometimes even though you have all these great ingredients, you can't get a meal out of it.

A good study on this topic is Insomniac's breakdown of its "I:5 - Girl With A Stick" project. The studio is full of talent, had tons of experience, had a head start on building its next-gen tech, and had some guides like Zelda and Tomb Raider and 90s RPGs, and yet the project never gelled. They eventually faced up to the horror that the project could not be salvaged, dug deep, and switched to a different project: Ratchet & Clank.

It was this if I remember right from insiders. Sony put like 100 million in it, suppose to be ready for holiday 2014 and by early 2014 it still wasn't in a state to show and they decide it's not worth it and canned it.

that person was a gaffer and was banned afterwards because he made that completely up. the reason so many think that the project really costed so much despite being only in full production for one year is because the mentioned gaffer whispered (or just guessed) about drm talks for future ps4 games. he initiiated more or less the #ps4nodrm demo.

My point was companies sink money into games and sometimes things dont work out. Regardless if the game was being pimped out at e3. Sometimes shit doesnt add up. Im sure if scalebound was living up to microsofts expectations it would have released. No one knows the real 100 percent story. SSM wanted to make a new game and it just didnt work out. Now they are stuck making God of War because it works.

I can't be sure but I think some folks in that huge Scalebound thread didn't have an Xbox and don't seem particularly enthused with Xbox. I can understand being upset if you bought a console for a game that got cancelled. Just seems like people use business decisions to pop up and take pot-shot on both sides.

It could be a walking simulator with dinosaurs and it would be better than No Man's Sky and every Killzone game. I'd buy it. Go dinos!

The rest is your opinion, but I have a problem with this.

Simple math really:

T.Rex + lazers > T.Rex.

Yes, I know Dino Riders is awesome. But they are real dinosaurs, not robot misfits.

What do you think games like The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 are? What about Until Dawn or the Order 1886? Sony has taken risks and some have paid off for them and some haven't.

I am not saying they have stopped altogether. But they have certainly been more cautious and risk averse than last gen.

Last gen they were losing billions and still funding games like LBP, Killzone, Infamous, MAG and Heavenly Sword. Motorstorm stopped selling after the first and we still got three games. DriveClub sold 2 million and got its studio shutdown in a year when Sony posted record profits. They are now making billions instead of losing billions and are shutting down studios. Their output has slowed down to a crawl this gen with maybe 2-3 games max per year from the first and second party studios. Last year was the first year this gen where they managed to release 4 big games and going by the last two E3s they are finally ready to release several first/second party games every year but the first few years were rough.

They are still our only hope seeing as how MS is somehow even better at cancelling stuff and Nintendo refuses to broaden their IP portfolio. I just dont like that my favorite publisher from last gen is now taking fewer risks in an age when they should be expanding and flourishing. They are finally in a place where they can afford it.

Last gen they bought MM, GG, Sucker Punch and Evolution Studios they moment they started breaking even with the PS3 revenues. Who have they bought this gen? Funding Kojima's game is a dream come true for me, but that's about it. Obsidian is tethering on bankruptcy but they wont save them. They dont have a RPG studio so Obsidian would've been a great acquisition. I dont know. I dont just want a game like Until Dawn every now and then. I want an Until Dawn every year. I dont just want them to rely on CoD/BF/Destiny. I want a Socom or warhawk/starhawk or Killzone or Resistance. a First party shooter that shows third party devs the true capabilities of the PS4. I want a quirky game like PS All Stars. It's all or nothing with Sony. it's either AAA or indie. Nothing in the middle.

Oh not this unicorn of a game again! Every time I hear about it changes genre. Once it was first person then third person. Once it was loot driven destiny clone or may be RPG. It had driveable vehicles, or was it just a shooter! But it was definitely Sci Fi. Now it even has dinosaurs. This motherfucking game is that best motherfucking game to ever mother fuck a game.

Well of course. No matter how much some people try to deny it.

Yep, people seem to twist this game into everything they've ever wanted. Not sure why.

I guess MS got it right by showing the game multiple times before cancelling it, so we know what we are missing out on lol

Ark Mission Genesis? Jesus wept that's awful.
Just throwing biblical names on stuff doesn't make it cool. That goes for you too Mass Effect

Pretty much. It sounds like they both were in development hell so I could see why they choose to cancel them. Publishers don't cancel games on a whim when they've invested multiple years and tens of millions of dollars.

However, one of these games was quietly worked on and cancelled while another was announced and demoed at multiple events (all for the purpose of enticing you into buying their console). It fucking sucks when you announce something that people will never get to play (like Half Life 2 Episode 3) because you get people's hopes up and then you squash them.

I'm not saying that they didn't intend to release it when they announced it but that doesn't change the fact that they got people's hopes up for nothing.

This is why more publishers (like Microsoft) need to wait until games are a lot further along in development before they announce them. I think Bethesda has done a good job with this lately (though obviously they fucked up with Prey 2).

I still can't understand how grown adults can be so petty over a piece of plastic. If men want to argue irrationally like kids at least be over a women or something not a cheap electronic device

They are slightly less risky, while making more profit now than before.

I get the feeling Days Gone was made in a time when TLOU 2 wasn't likely to be made, and then, basically, the rug was pulled out from under them with the announcement of Part 2. Now they really have to show the game off in some amazing way to prove their worth. Out of all the games shown off at E3, Days Gone is probably the least talked about.

Im hoping that one turns out great i like Sony Bend. They wanted to make a cyberpunk game for Vita a new rpg type game but Sony wanted them to make Uncharted. I hope Days gone does well for them. I would love for them to have a hit and not get washed out by TLOU.

Apart from having zombie-like enemies, they don't seem to have that much in common. One is a story-driven linear game that relies more on atmosphere than action, other is an open world game with horde encounters, and more shooting than sneaking.

Killzone was big, but it was boring, every time.
I hope for the best with Horizon, but I'm not gonna expect much.

Many would beg to differ, since KZ2+3 got good reviews, and their Metacritic scores are 91 and 84. Their main stumbling block has been the story, and from what I've read that's improved in Horizon.
