NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I just beat Double Dragon...the final battle took me like 10 tries but I managed to beat Jimmy on the 3rd try, and it was insane! I died the most to Willy, but the key is to kick and grab him a lot. Man, that was rough. Jimmy takes a ridiculous amount of hits with just kicks even. Glad that's over with.

That worked for Abobo. Not so much with the guy with the machine gun. How do you deal with him?
Kick and grab.

I still can't beat Double Dragon. It expects perfection. The Machine Guy always ends me because I'm drained from fighting everyone else. The two Abobos at the end take most of my health. You can't take your time, you have to rush it because there's a time limit.

I'm finding it to be 1000000x harder than Battletoads.
Honestly, I beat this way faster than Battletoads(and still consider Battletoads harder). Abobos are the main issue before Willy(Machine Guy), but I never had much issue with the other enemies. I normally also do diagonal kicks on Aobos to take them out faster and safer as well.

Nice work on beating it, congrats! I need more time to play it, lol. Btw, what are "diagonal kicks"?

Basically you move in a diagonal patter(like down left or down right) and you repeatedly kick and it'll make it harder for the Abobos to hit you while you get 3 hits on them each.

And thanks!

I just tried it again and lost two lives thanks to the blocks coming out of the wall and barely made it on the third time just to get knifed by a guy spontaneously appearing right in front of me. I don't think Battletoads had anything this bullshit. And only 3 lives.

Elbow, elbow, elbow. Drop down a plane below them, elbow, Drop down, elbow. Wiley, Abobo and Jimmy have no chance and it only takes a few.

The hardest part of Double Dragon for me is just blowing through lives on that damn stone wall with zero pattern.

I went to elbow Willy and he just shot me in the back, lol.

The stones are what I hate the most, but I seem to somehow get through them without taking much damage at times. You need patience and luck for that annoying section.

Personally i've been incredibly busy with work and the slew of holidays / new games that are pretty good. Missed out on both the NES and Genesis monthly games.

Played some DD last night, Famicom version. My first time, though I've cleared the arcade game. Got to the big vertical rock area after the cave platforming.

I can't tell if it's more or less of a mess than the arcade game, lol.

I actually played three games on the plattform this evening for the first time in forever. First, i checked out Double Dragon which was fun. I found it to play much better than Comix Zone whih we are playing in the genesis-thread, its just much less cheap imo. Fucked completely up on the jungle-level though, where i was repeatedly thrown in the water. Oh well, really fun game and Im definitely going to try to beat it!

Then I played one of my recent pickups:

I somehow had the impression that this was a hidden gem for the system, but i dont know, it felt pretty crappy to me, and it didnt seem worth the 20$ i payed for it. Guess it sweetens the blow that it came complete. The main problem with the game is the crazy big sprite you control, which makes the controls pretty annoying. Or maybe i just need to get used to it, who knows.

I also checked out some Arumana no Kiseki, which looked really cool at first - but i gotta admit that i didnt quite get the hang of the whip/hookshot which made it slightly frustrating. Definitely needs to practice more on this though, since it seemed to have a lot of promise!

Oh did the price go down again? I remember a cart going for around $90 after it was featured on James and Mike Mondays...

Been playing through Lagrange Point and recently completed Esper Dream 2.

I highly recommend Esper Dream 2 and the fan translation for anyone looking for an action RPG who has already exhausted the usual options (Crystalis, Zelda, Radia Senki). It's got some lovely sprites and graphics, great music (VRC6 chip), and an interesting scenario where you go through several worlds based on books in a library - a port town, a mountain and Japanese castle area, a train that travels through time, and the inside of a giant blast furnace where all the NPCs are screws and screwdrivers.

Lagrange Point, well we all know how AMAZING the soundtrack is. I wanted to play the game because I love sci-fi RPGs and games with great music, and it's extremely inspired by my favorite game series of all time (Phantasy Star). While I do like Lagrange Point... it's a bit of a drag due to the really high encounter rate and the fact that every attack consumes BP (basically, MP). It's a resource management style RPG taken to its very extreme. Dungeons are short and not too confusing, the world map is quite large (and difficult to figure out where to go next unless you're using a guide, the second half of the game is pretty nonlinear) but the encounter rate grates. There's also a weapon fusion system that you will need to master to get anywhere, it's actually pretty innovative for a game from this era. I'm up to the final dungeon and expect to beat it later this weekend.

Yeah, the pal-version never jumped that much. But i definitely got a good deal on it (considering it was complete and in decent condition). From a game-perspective, it wasnt really worth it though, which was disappointing.

Loved Jackie Chan growing up. The huge sprites were amazing at the time. Good music and I thought the controls were tight and and it was fun to play. It felt like a spiritual successor to Kid Nikki to me.

I've been wanting to play this. It seems like the best option to play the game in English and with accurate sound is to buy a famicom copy, and have someone flash the translated ROM onto it.

Has anyone here done that? I've come close to buying a copy, but wasn't sure about sending it out somewhere.

I've done it. I believe I posted about it earlier in the year here as well. I did it through nesreproductions.com. He did some good work. I also have a second, untouched copy.

Jackie Chan is superb. I don't get complaints about the controls at all. They're very tight. The game is stellar. Wish we could put in our rotation but it's too expensive now thanks to a James & Mike YT video.

Holding true to the games I don't want to play but keep getting picked trend, your winner for March is Metal Gear lol

Let's start taking suggestions for April now.

Damn, Jackal came close.

I've never really dug into Metal Gear. Maybe I'll be able to now. Seems like a game that could be a "talker" and a good one for a thread like ours.

My friend bought a Famicom version with the English game flashed onto it and wired his NES up to get the VRC7 to play. It was working great until he lost his save games at one point near the end (luckily for him, when I got to that part in an emu, I sent him over my .sav files). If you have a Famicom it would probably be a bit easier to play since you won't have to do the hardware mod.

I own the Japanese cart but was fine playing the translation on NEStopia.

It's worth playing but be prepared for a grind, with a LOT of random encounters.

Cool. I do have a TwinFamicom, so if I end up getting a copy translated I'll be playing it on that. That said, there is a thing you can buy for a front loading nes called an Enio Exp board. It plugs into the expansion slot on the bottom of the system and enables expansion audio and lets use famicom accessories. Cool option for using a front loader if you won't want to mess with modding it.

AVGN said Metal Gear slurped anal grease from a warthog's dickhole. Is it actually good? I've only played the beginning.

You can't really go by AVGN... I enjoy the videos but a lot of the games he covers aren't nearly as bad as he makes them out to be. I think the first Turtles game is pretty good, for example.

I managed to beat Metal Gear about 12 years ago when I was starved for Metal Gear games. I remember being surprised by how much of the game just doesn't work properly. For example, guards will catch you when they shouldn't, and using the binoculars will re-spawn the enemies on the screen.

I have played through both versions on original hardware and I honestly prefer the NES/Famicom version of Metal Gear, if only because MSX has very low framerates and plays all choppy. Also it's easier and more chunky and colourful. Fami/NES version has no actual metal gear though lol.

That said, I really never planned to play through it again, it's one of those 'tick off the list' games.

Usually the games he rips on kind of deserve it though. Even the games I like that he did have some big flaws. Like the Ninja Gaiden weirdness about losing to the last boss and starting back on 6-1. That video was cathartic. There's been games that people want him to review such as Monster Party and he can't do it because he enjoys them too much. It's usually based in some truth.

Anyone have an opinion on the best non-Mega Man Capcom game on the NES? Looking for a new game to sink my teeth into for my Cacpcom retrospective.

Only 4 votes for Flintstones? Come on guys! IIRC, it has local co-op, fun mini games and is just fun platformer in general. If you haven't I suggest giving it a chance.

Metal Gear is kind of a snooze, but I'm in. Probably a reason why an out of print retro NES game named Metal Gear is so cheap. Just saying.

Duck Tales bruh, Duck Tales. That or Darkwing Duck, which is basically a Mega Man game re-skinned to a Disney property. Almost all the Disney games Capcom developed and published on the NES are really good. The other two I'd recommend barring the Capcom Disney games are Bionic Commando and Mighty Final Fight.

Just abut any of the Disney Capcom games. For me it's probably Chip 'n Dale or Duck Tales. That could be Disney Afternoon nostalgia goggles though.

Is Darkwing Duck worth it? I've been interested in picking it up for a while, but it's gotten quite expensive. Mighty Final Fight too, but I can get that on Wii U VC apparently.

Thanks. I remember Chip 'n Dale being impossible as a kid. Maybe it's time to revisit it.

Nah, like almost all 8-bit and 16-bit games the fun was in the challenge, skill, and frustration. It takes practice, timing, and patience. My neighbor friend borrowed it and ended up being able to get through it like nothing, I think without dying if I remember correctly.
