Persona Community Thread |OT9| SPOILER TAGS OR DIE

My recommendation would be play in the language you're most familiar with for Persona as a whole. For me that was JP having played 3 and 4 in JP. Can't say more though. At the very least I would advise to refrain from frequent switching cause you're going to lose out. Probably not a case that would happen naturally anyway but just in case.

-There's a show you can rent called the "X-folders"
That was actually in the Japanese version too. The DVD names are parodies of famous western TV series, which makes them pretty easy to localize.

P4 didn't have those cool manga style cutouts, right? I know P3 did.

I'm pretty sure neither P3 or P4 had any cut-ins like that - aside from the ones in battle when using a Persona on a weakness. P5's got a shit tonne of them even for the side characters, and they're all animated too. They look really great and help lend expression to some of the bigger lines.

P3 had some cut-ins when a character got pissed off. P4 just had expressions above the character's head.

Watched the trailer again. Voices sound fine to me, but I've never been very picky when it comes to that.

Sounds like Michelle Ruff's voicing the teacher. I guess Yukari's
acting career
didn't work out.

More than I can say for Yukiko
turning into a muck-raker. :p

So any big differences between PS3 or PS4 version?

Nope. The only notable ones are that the PS3 version is 720p, whereas PS4 is 1080p, and that the load times are a little longer on PS3.
Other than that, the content of the game is exactly the same on both.

Good stuff. How many of y'all are going for the PS3 over the latter?

I think it was used for surprise a few times as well, but yes P3 had them for cutscenes. Not nearly as flashy as Persona 5 tho.

They were just blown up versions of the existing Soejima portraits from what I recall. P5 has unique animated close-ups for those manga-esque cut ins on characters.

Also, P5 for GOTY 2016 AND 2017!

On the fence about this. The last JRPG I played was at least a decade ago when I played tons of them, though I tended to never complete them. This game looks insanely great, however. Somebody hard-sell me.

Wait, what? You're saying... you haven't a JRPG at ALL in recent years? You haven't played a JRPG in 10 YEARS?

Alright, let's see...

A lot of references to a wide variety of mythology (what hooked me on the series)
An incredibly strong social aspect (arguably has more presence or importance to the audience than the combat)
A zany, memorable soundtrack
Plethora of side activities (fishing, batting cages, etc.)
Plenty of dungeon exploration, both pre-designed AND randomly generated

Now that I think about it I played Fire Emblem Awakening but never finished it. That was 5 years ago. And on handheld.

I imagine if I wanted to play Persona 4, but didn't have a PS3 or Vita, this is the next best thing, right?

Thanks. I imagine that with all that the systems the game will take some time to become comfortable with/understand? That's the problem I had with them in the past-- I keep restarting once I felt like I made too many mistakes.

I liked Persona 4 enough to where it was the first turn based RPG I'd completed since 1999 (FFVII).

Actually feeling like you belong to a group of friends.

Being able to not act like a lazy bum every day.

Having many ways you can spend time each day.

Forming an intimate connection to a routine, a cast, and a setting.

Pretty damn fun turn-based combat and great story, to boot.

So, while looking for assets for a thread, I came across a curious cut-in, then later that night, came across an unfortunate sentence.

. How fucked am I? There are other twists.... right?

P5 SPOILER
It's certainly not a surprise to the cast.

You'll be fine. There's more than one twist.

There are other twists, but you probably shouldn't post that in the community thread, even in spoiler tags.

Thanks so much, I'll definitely have to be more careful now.

Alright - I'll post in the import OT then. (Didn't want to since I was the last poster there and didn't want to double post.)

Is this becoming like how people wrote off FE Fates as the Worst Localization Ever by citing one screenshot of dialogue they didn't like?

If you guys start going into this game already with an attitude that the localization must probably suck, you'll be obscenely nitpicking at everything trying to prove that point while completely diminishing any enjoyment you will get out of it.
not me being late with this comment or anything

Yeah, this is my worry for myself, personally.

Meh. I don't really have any compliants about the English VA or localization. I haven't really heard or seen anything though. On media blackout of sorts.

!!!!!!

Wait... I am disappointed that Morgana's voice isn't some sexy deep voice woman but instead is squeaky.

Morgana doesn't sound like that in the Japanese version either. Their JP voice actress is the voice of Pikachu, after all.

Yeah, sorry, guys. Emotions riding high at the moment, so the possibility of the game finally coming out in English in any form is still really hard to grasp. I just want them to stick the landing so much, if not for me, then at least for most people.

Geez people, from the way that some of you guys here are typing, I would have assumed that the game was already available for sale and that you were able to snag a copy and had already gone through the localization script with a fine-tooth comb to point out the flaws between the Japanese/English writing, voiceovers and what's not.
You're right, but all the snippets so far have been what Atlus has chosen to lead with. Marketing is supposed to paint its product in the most favorable light, so it always baffles me how localization companies – not just Atlus – routinely fumble there.

But apparently you will always piss somebody off.

Using a quite literal translation for "As expected from you, Joker." -> People complain on NeoGAF the localization is too literal and so bad, they won't buy the game anymore.

They're are creative and change the Japanese line quite a bit to: "Whassup Persona!?"
People complain on Gamefaqs the localization is too different and so bad, they won't buy the game anymore.
You're right that there's no pleasing everyone, especially for something people have been waiting years for, but I think there's plenty of room for a middle ground. I think they went too far with the "wassup" line but also think the literal equivalent would be too dry in English.

Man imagine if we judged Persona 4's voice acting and localization by "Aha, is this our chance?"
They really puts things in perspective. Thanks.

I still hate that steelbook. The artwork is great, but it wasn't designed for two sides of a cover like that, and looks really tacky. It just seems misleading and silly to have Ryuji, Futaba, and Haru on the front cover, and Makoto, Anne, and Goro on the back. Why design a cover that only looks good when you open it and lay it flat? Nobody will ever do that.
It worked way better in the box for the 20th Anniversary Edition. Speaking of, the box for the TYH version also looks pretty awful and could've benefitted from that art.

Does anyone have a high res of this image? Could use it for reasons.

I dunno, people complained about Fates because they felt it took too many liberties instead of just using Awkward Fantranslation Dialect, the criticisms of P5 (that I've seen) seem to be that it doesn't take enough liberties and sounds like Awkward Fantranslation Dialect.

I was hoping Morgana would turn into a woman like Yoriuchi from Bleach. A black cat transforms into this awesome fighter.

....

Had no idea Pikachu's VA was in P5. Thats pretty high profile.

Preordered from PSN last night and got a killer theme (replaced my Bloodborne plat theme finally). The other stuff didn't download, though, so I assume they unlocks with the game?

Ikue Otani is also pretty famous for her role as Tony Tony Chopper the reindeer for One Piece.

It's a pretty star-studded cast of voice actors/actresses on the Japanese side while English side seems to be plucking a lot of upcoming talent that did Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 (well, both Trails and Persona 5's voice recording seems to be handled by the same voice recording studio...)

So yea, I already played through once for my Japanese copy, but coming off relatively fresh from Trails of Cold Steel 2, I'm planning on having my first playthrough in English and going for the Japanese dub for my second run onwards

I know what you're saying, but it's virtually every line we've heard so far. It's all awkward and weird.

So not quite the same calibre of acting then, lol.

Well, let's not pretend that voicing a mascot character in an anime is Oscar worthy and dubbing a video game is community theater. There's certainly a difference in prominence, but without taking anything away from Otani (she's a legend), I don't think it's fair to imply there's a comically large difference in the acting chops involved.
