More Sony Spider-Man spin-offs: Black Cat and Silver Sable

Written by one of the guys behind Thor The Dark World.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is getting a little bigger.

The studio, already in deep development on villain off-shoot Venom, is now developing a feature project centered on the female characters Silver Sable and the Black Cat.

Chris Yost, who worked on the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok, is writing the script, building on a previous version written by Lisa Joy, the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld.

The studio is hoping to go to directors soon with an eye on a fall start date. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the project, which was previously known as the secret female spinoff project.

Silver Sable, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1985, is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.

Black Cat is an acrobatic cat burglar named Felicia Hardy. The character has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man. The character was cut from scripts for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy and briefly appeared in name only in Amazing Spider-Man 2, played by Felicity Jones.

Sony has a new and rebooted Spider-Man movie coming this summer, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the superhero and his universe of characters are seen as a bright spot on a rather meager slate. But the problem with having rights to the character and universe is that, while Spider-Man is the most popular Marvel character, the other stand-outs tend to be the villains from his rogue’s gallery.

Hence, Sony is developing Venom, based on the popular character who already appeared on-screen in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and who has sometimes acted as an anti-hero in the Marvel comics. The studio has penciled in an October 2018 release and is meeting directors on the project.

Black Cat is a major supporting character in the Spider-Man universe, though Sable is less known.

(The spinoffs are not off-shoots from the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming but rather projects spun from the overall franchise and based on Marvel's Spider-Man universe.)

Yost has deep Marvel ties having worked on not only two Thor movies, but also having gotten his start writing on Marvel animated series such as Wolverine and the X-Men. He is also known for comic book work on X-23, better known as Wolverine’s cloned daughter and who is a headliner in the hit Wolverine movie, Logan.
Soon the Aunt May movie will be announced.

There is literally no way that this will be the case long term. None.

Rothman has been playing Fiege this whole time.

First the animated film and now this.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
You can just taste that Sony Pictures desperation in the air. I'd kinda hoped the Marvel deal would stem all this crazy offshoot shit from being given the go-ahead to stop polluting the brand but I guess not.

Sony seems to be trying everything they can before the franchise collapses again. They wanted to do this with Amazing, and now they have ...how many Spidey sequels ready, plus Venom and now Black Cat and Silver Sable.

Those two should be in one movie and I think there'd be an interesting opposing forces thing going on there.

tbh really all Spidey needs is Intro movie (in this case, Homecoming), find out more about the world building (ie, either bring in things from the netflix shows like Daredevil or at least Fisk; build more on some of the other rouges like Ock, Gobby etc) and then lead up to a third movie with Sinister Six.

Gee, I wonder how 20-something Felicia Hardy will find a way to be romantically involved with 16-year old Peter Parker. My money's on them using the Ultimate version of their relationship as the basis for that.

This kind of crap is going to keep Venom, Black Cat, and Silver Sable out of future Spider-man films, isn't it. :/

Nobody wants a Spider-man cinematic universe without Spider-man, Sony, eff off with this stuff.

Remember how in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 they showed Doc Ock's arms and Vulture's wings in Oscorp as a way of world building?

Remember how the end credits had a setup for Sinister Six?

Sony keeps fucking up

au contraire. one of the best spider man stories in YEARS has no spider man in it.

And the odds of Sony Pictures coming up with anything even half as good as that book are exactly zero.

I can't believe people are skeptical of Sony continuing to pump out attempts at a Ghostbusters franchise when they are so clearly desperate for a cinematic universe of any kind.

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at.

Are you saying that NOT tripling down on a bad franchise and making ASM3 around the sinister six with andrew garfield is "fucking up?"

I would argue the opposite.

.

that's the thing. they don't NEED to come up with anything "half as good as the book" because the book is right there, they own the rights to all characters and could film it tomorrow.

COULD you do a film franchise around Spider-Man's supporting cast? Yes. Easily. In a second.

Is Sony smart enough to actually mine the properties they own for what works, rather than doubling down on what will no doubt be an absolutely terrible Venom film? Probably not.

you want people to care about D-listers like Black Cat and Silver Sable? You go the "Superior Foes" route, THEN spin them off into their own little movies if they work. It's one of the few things that made sense about suicide squad.

Yeah....sure. Right alongside Aunt May Spider-Man. Sony just announces shit to show Marvel they still have the Spider-Man rights. Pretty certain, none of these movies will happen except Venom.

exactly. Did people forget Deadpool started off as a cookie cutter villain for X-Force?

Deadpool had multiple ongoings expanding his lore and a huge fanbase by the time the movie was made.

They keep trying to do certain films way too fast. Sinister Six, Silver Sable, Black Cat

It can be argued a Venom film can work, but that's it.

You really think Feige is a bad enough negotiator (especially from a position of advantage), that he'd be played by Rothman of all people?

Silver Sable and Black Cat would be a little easier than Venom to work out a solo treatment for, so I'd be tentatively ok with that idea. I could only see solo Venom, in a world presumably without Spider-Man, in one of two ways: a) skip classic Venom altogether and just proceed straight to Agent Venom; or b) have it be a Venom-Carnage flick with the pair of them bonding to their respective psychopaths and have them feud with differing plans on how to deal with humanity.

All of the above could potentially work, they just need to put the effort into them. Given Sony's most recent forays into the franchise...I'm not going to hold my breath.

But hey, at least we're not getting the Vulturess.

If there's one superhero that can have their own cinematic universe, it's Spider-Man.

If there's one film company that can't set up their own cinematic universe, it's Sony.

Deadpool had multiple ongoings expanding his lore and a huge fanbase by the time the movie was made.

Deadpool became popular pretty much immediately when marvel rebooted the character from generic mercenary to whatever the hell he is now.

There are any number of similar characters to mine under the spider man franchise that COULD be breakout stars in the same vein IF you put the work in to develop them and get audiences to care.

Keep in mind that the broader market doesn't read comics and the nearly $800 million Deadpool brought in at the box office was from people who had never heard of the character nor read about him.

edit: even better example: Guardians of the galaxy went from triple Z list "who the fuck is this" to one of the most bankable properties Marvel has, because the property was given to people that gave a shit about the property and put the work in.

*sigh* Just when I get excited about Spider-Man being the MCU I remember that Sony still hold Spider-Man movie license, I really wish that they didn't and just sell the right back to Marvel as Sony just doesn't get Spider-Man, never have and never will.

Remember how in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 they showed Doc Ock's arms and Vulture's wings in Oscorp as a way of world building?

That's because Sony was more interested in heavily setting up the next movies and advertising their product than actually make a coherent Spider-Man movie.

There was a reason why Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't preform well and why Sony ended up jumping in bed with Marvel to get Spider-Man into the MCU.

So is their a dart board of Spiderman characters in a Sony exec's office and they just see what they get to keep their slate from looking barren? No way half of these movies actually get made.

What the fuck there's gonna be a Silver Sable movie and I still don't have Thunderbolts?

Next you'll tell me there's gonna be a movie about Gamb-----oh.....oh no..........

Silver Sable doesn't have super powers, other than being queen of a country.

What about the Aunt May origin story they were working on?

The one that revealed that Peter is really her bastard child, that her married sister adopted?

The majority of DP fans knew him from merchandise than comics. He sells backpacks, figures, stickers, buttons, shirts, etc. They knew the face before the character. Now he runs the world.

yep, swing and a miss. Nice try though.

The amount of deadpool comics and merchandise is completely insignificant next to that box office gross, and your explanation does nothing to explain what happened to GoTG which had neither an ongoing comic nor any merchandise. The deadpool movie audience weren't fans to begin with- they BECAME fans through strong marketing and word of mouth that the movie was good.
