Has VR stalled ?

I'm ready to drop money on more PSVR games. But there isn't any.

Its such a cool device and I want it to succeed. This isn't your average joe peripheral like the Move or Eyetoy.

As a PSVR owner, feeling that way. Resident Evil 7 is fantastic and I'll be replaying it for the forseeable future in VR, but I'm not sure what else is in the pipeline for my tastes. I am very much enjoying the 3D bluray playback at least.

I got mine for free from Taco Bell so I'm not going to complain too much, if I had paid for it I think I'd have wanted to wait for a lower price.

the whole "VR has no software" thing is so tired

You could criticize elements of the marketing or funding of VR software, I guess, but if you can't find any interesting VR games I probably can't get behind your tastes.

I really thought RE7 VR would light shit up. It seemed like the perfect way to showcase the technology to a mainstream audience.

Full disclosure: this is completely ignorant speculation.

When will companies realize that people don't like putting things on to experience media. Except maybe headphones, and that's arguable.

The mainstram audience won't shell out $1000

Did the market ever want VR? It seems like tech and game sites really wanted to convince us that we wanted it, but the content has really never been there.

I just don't feel like the tech is quite ready yet. Needs a much higher field of view, better resolution and other issues resolved before it becomes a mainstream product.

even if you have 4K VR it doesn't solve the mediocre software.

I bet next VR is game coming out next week is another Wave-base/shooting gallery #067

$1,000 is not the barrier to entry if you're one of the tens of millions who already own a PS4.

This is a silly question. The current VR generation kicked off due to market reaction via the Oculus kickstarter. We're at this point almost soley due to the market asking for it.

This wide stream penetration most expect out of the VR industry won't come to fruition until the 3rd iteration of the Vive/PSVR. When the HW will be very cheap to produce, the software plenty and the quality of all experiences downright amazing.

Even if the rendering technology improves and the price drops, I think there are hard limits to VR adoption that won't be lifted until they figure out the locomotion thing. Teleporting just doesn't seem like a natural or intuitive method of movement for most people, but it's the best one we've got given the motion sickness and space limitations that don't seem very easy to solve.

That's not to say we won't ever solve those issues, of course. There's some interesting research going on, and maybe they'll crack it one day. But right now, the emphasis seems very much on either teleportation or games suited mostly to stationary play.

"Most" being press, I guess.

There's always been a huge disconnect between what the press and your typical gaming enthusiast expected and what headset makers and VR enthusiasts expected. Sales are in line with the latter.

VR can stall. I have absolutely no problem with VR stalling. Now that it has officially arrived on a consumer level, it's not going anywhere. There will always be an enthusiast crowd creating content for it and talking about the latest releases, no matter how small. Tech will slowly improve, some of it will make waves, some of it won't, but VR is here to stay.

I'm looking forward to Polybius and Ace Combat...not much else I'm aware of.

Many of the games I was looking for never materialized, or had VR modes severely cut back or neutered come release.

It's still fun but sort of a hassle. I swear every time I try and play something with my Vive i've had issues, though the last two times it's worked fine. There are definitely some games i'm interested in and games i've bought I need to play through but i'm pretty distracted with Overwatch, Horizon ZD, Nier, Persona 5 coming soon.. @_@

If anything there is just too many good games out right now and I don't have enough time.

I think the hype train has just hit the reality checkpoint with what it truly is right now. Not ready for mainstream, but will slowly continue to get better and cheaper.

I'm not expecting PS VR to get an overload of releases and GT Sport, Ace Combat 7, Tekken 7 (or did they back track on that?) all got VR modes so there's that.
I do hope more PC indies get ported over though.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Yeah seems like it, I haven't touched it since REVII and even more worrying is Resident Evil
Game is just not the same without VR
going forward Resident Evil needs to continue the VR perspective, just FP on a TV drags the experience down so without VR being strong in the future a "just FP RE" probably won't do as well.
I know I can't play it without VR.
Games should be coming out for this thing but I see nothing of RE's calibre in the future so far.

We're going to get these threads for the next few years I guess. It's steadily moving along. Games are coming out for it almost every other day. Good games that couldn't exist otherwise. Technology is getting better consistently. It's not going to blow up any time soon and it's going to be niche for a while and everyone who was really paying attention could have told you that over a year ago.

Feels like it barely took off. Had a good slate of launch games, hit a real high point with RE7, and now there's nothing I know of to really look forward to. I'm sure there will be some more things, though.

Yup yup. All in line with expectations from HMD makers/VR enthusiasts. This was the first real baby step for consumer level VR and we still got a long journey ahead. Literally the tip of the iceberg, I feel.

I was always planning to wait, and am still waiting. I haven't experienced it for myself and PSVR is still a possibility depending on the level of software support.

This is good post. They even convinced me, so I bought Vive - and still regret it.

I dunno, I was pretty skeptical of VR until I got a free Gear VR with my new phone. Playing some of the games and other experiences on there convinced me that VR with more powerful hardware behind it could lead to some really cool experiences. After getting a PSVR though, I've barely touched it. I keep meaning to grab Arkham VR though and I hear good things about EVE.

I bought a Pro purely for PSVR after abstaining from this console generation previously.

As a PSVR owner, I understand why you'd think VR has stalled, but it's just going to take some time to get high quality experiences out.

RE7 is absolutely a showcase title, and demonstrates that you can do a AAA game in VR, not to mention a FPS title with controller locomotion without making people sick.

I've got Farpoint on preorder, and am looking forward to more full-length titles as soon as I can get them.

I don't even think cost is the biggest problem. It's the inconvenience/discomfort of wearing a headset, plus motion sickness.

I sold my PSVR. Games with fast motion (e.g Battlezone and Driveclub) gave me some awful motion sickness, and I am not the type who gets sick on planes or rollercoasters or whatever. And frankly I just never felt any desire at the end of the day to put the thing on.

I am not convinced that it's anything more than a novelty. Same as motion controls and stereoscopic 3D.

I feel like at least on the Vive side it really needs some big budget heavy hitter titles to at least be announced. Seems like a bunch of people are working on games in secret, which makes it hard to get hyped for the future.

Actually, the next game coming out next week is Korix a RTS/Tower Defense Game running at native 120Hz, so no.

At the required price of entry and wired - cumbersome - setup, I guess you can't ask for more.

PSVR is chugging along just fine, the others not so hot but okay-ish.

Don't expect more than 1 AA effort per year though. This year with RE7, GTSport, Ace Combat 7 and Farpoint is an exception.

Expect indies.

Oculus, on the other hand, has been pretty consistent about putting out polished games they've funded/published/marketed but they're getting overlooked in enthusiast circles (or at least GAF) for a number of extremely understandable reasons.

Why is the Vive the one always referenced? The Rift is just as capable now AND has better controllers.

Also I've never experience racing games with a wheel as immersive as with the Rift. It's fantastic. The only downside right now for me is the resolution that you adapt to after a few minutes.

Well, VR stuff isn't exactly making the gaming headlines.

What's hot right now?

Robo Recall. Wireless add ons. New headsets from new players including LG who is making the second SteamVR headset. Eye tracking and foveated rendering advancement. Fallout 4 VR being at E3 this year. Further integration for using Unity and Unreal Engine in VR. Paranormal Activity VR. New Oculus games coming including one from Metro's developer. Valve officially working on 3 new VR games that are confirmed to be more than small things like The Lab. Etc etc.

I'm mildly interested in VR, but the price is still very expensive for what it is.Even PSVR is still too expensive at $400. : \

To say nothing of the fact that my PC is a mere mid-range setup that's not really capable of running the higher end VR setups. And on the PlayStation side, I'm not sure how having a launch PS4 would work with PSVR so...

I don't think I was specific enough with my answer, sorry. I think what's happening right now is PSVR's launch lineup has faded and people are ready for more. PC is similar, but with a more complex situation; the Rift's Touch release was a huge bang with nothing too notable to follow besides a few outliers like Robo Recall. Vive is getting some cool hardware additions soon, some other companies are getting in on the hardware race as well.

The thing is, there's actually shitloads of stuff in the works right now. Look at job listings (Oculus Job listing is gigantic now), look at https://uploadvr.com/, search around and you'll see there's tons of stuff in the works both in and out of gaming. I highly suggest https://www.youtube.com/user/Epyx911, a really good VR news channel that gives very current information on a day to day basis.

I will say that PSVR seems more empty because the PC library is expanding way faster and has a lot more indie developers, which is where most of the games are going to come from right now due to funding/lack of user-base. Yes that means there's much more crap to sift through on PC, but the quality ones stick out pretty well because of Steam's exceptional functionality in that department.
