Maybe with an official statement saying that they weren't ok with JonTron opinion, for example.

I would say doing this is an official statement saying that they are not OK with Jontrons opinion.

Hey guys I just wanted to drop in here and say that I don't know what this Jon guy said and I don't want to watch any videos of the debate or on the subject or read over transcripts or even summaries of what was said and am woefully ignorant on how free speech actually works from a legal perspective in the U.S. let alone the U.K. and I claim to have no political or emotional stake in the discussion but I think it's kind of scary that this guy was kicked from this project just for having an opinion. This seems like a real first amendment issue that this guy can't just have an opinion and not lose his job over it. Think about the damage this kind of censorship does to art and free speech. I think the answer is somewhere in the middle because being racist is bad but being too not racist is just as bad.

ayyy, lmao

I honestly find this pretty sad, to be honest.
Of course, I don't agree with anything that JonTron has said in his first video but in my opinion Playtonic could have been handling the situation in a different way.

They *DID*. And if they kept his work in the game despite an official statement, they would be hypocrites, which they obviously aren't, since they will be removing it. It's right there in the fuckin OP

Is there a reason you think doing both (they made a statement and also removed his voicework) was inappropriate? Their announcement waited long enough after the original incident that JonTron was able to make a follow-up video to clarify, which unfortunately for him, further demonstrated his viewpoint. Playtonic didn't want Jon tied to their work, and I think anyone could tell you that caring enough to make a statement but not removing his part would come across as a mixed message.

"We don't support the views of this person, but don't feel so strongly about it that we do anything."

That would be a rather weak response.

Interesting. Destiny is arguing on twitter that this further alienates the other side and that this will make helping these people harder in the future.

I get where he's coming from, but definitely disagree. Jontron has no place in this kids game. Furthermore, him being able to preach these insane ideas without repercussion normalises it far too much.
I feel on a national level - for example just writing off all Trump voter as racists - there is some point to this, and you need to think about the best strategy to turn these people into the right direction. But on a personal level like this, the guy has it coming and trying to hold a discussion with him about this "opinion" and such is mostly useless.

I think people are really blowing this out of proportion. We are talking about a small part of the game he participated in that he did for free. It's not like he lost his job or anything.

Smart move to disassociate with him. But it honestly would have been better to have just removed him discretely. They are just creating a huge shitstorm now.

They did release that statement, and they proved it by dumping him from the game.

That heat isn't even remotely related to the reason they are making a video game.

Honestly it's the expectation that someone shouldn't face ANY repercussions for anything they say that is the worst part of all this. You can be a racist asshole, just don't expect every door to be open to you after the fact.

nah, he had his chance to walk it back & only said he had been biting his tongue, more or less. when your audience is so many kids, there should be consequences for trying to legitimize white supremacy/ethnic cleansing shit - personally, i hope this is only the start.

boogie, TB & the garbage crew straddle fences for fear of losing (shitty) viewers, which only normalizes this crap. we need more like this, not less.

It's odd that people who have these drama issues on Youtube seem to not realize they are basically employees to the public. People don't want fast food workers spewing about their dirty race and if they did so, it would be considered a poor reflection on the company and that person would be fired. Yet the people who result in payment to the Youtubers can be offended or hurt by that person and it's totally fine and harmless in their mind.

Unless you make money through a means unrelated to the approval of humanity, it's probably unwise to act as Jontron has. I doubt this will get too far out there unless it gains massive traction, but if I was him i'd try to back pedal and ignore this topic from here out, as there is clearly no way he can actually learn a more tolerant opinion.

Thankfully I always thought he was just an annoying person and feel no heartbreak over him being a piece of shit.

Considering that he had a very minor role in this game, it was easier to make. If he had a lot of lines and the game was this close to release, Playtonic would be in a lose lose situation.

Please, just don't get a job in politics.

Day one. Good move Playtonic. Thanks for holding him accountable for his actions. Growth is very difficult if there's no consequences for bad actions.

No tears shed for him. I just hope he comes to a realization about his toxic behavior from this (he probably won't), or someone else drops him. :^) Good on Playtonic.

Outing this kind of stuff is important, especially in the current climate where racists have been emboldened. I'm glad they made a point of announcing it.

way to go Playtonic!

this is how free speech works. you say some shit, you deal with the consequences. if you want to make your living off the public, you should be trying to be more inclusive, not less.

Yeah. It's actually rather refreshing to see a developer actively distance themselves from this kind of shit

I really don't think disagreeing with someone makes me a racist. Or a SJW.
Unless you are joking again. Your posts aren't very clear.

Again, I'm gonna say that this is a stupid move, because it is just going to draw more negative attention to the game. Those that currently support Jon after his rant will take this to heart and poison the community even more. It's nothing but bad news.

It isn't even his voice. It's a bunch of garbled sounds. It was really unlikely that any casual buyer would know it was him.

Now a bunch of loud-mouths are going to shitpost to the extreme because he was removed, causing even more backlash.

So basically no one should stand up to a racist because their racists friends will just get mad?

I have some good news for you

You can read the first amendment and it's only one paragraph long

Congrats! You are now an expert on the first amendment!

A little bothered by the headlines I see with "controversial" or "right-wing" views when full blown racism was coming out of Jon's mouth. Let's not downplay this gaming media :/

Good on Platonic though :)

I'm SO happy.

These are the guys who made my favorite game ever, and here they are actively fighting biggotry and supporting diversity.

I'm buying two copies now.

Loving all the wonderful people fighting to keep politics in a game now that those politics are about excluding minorities from society even if that means killing them. They only want politics out of games if the political opinions have something to do with greater representation of minorities in games. I really hate how prevalent this is in games culture, but it explains so much of what's wrong with the industry.

Honestly, this is even better than of he was paid. JT loves banjo kazooie. He was super excited to have any sort of role in the thing he love's spiritual successor. To have that then away at the last minute? Karma is a beautiful thing.

it is a great show of integrity. personally, it makes me think the makers of this game really really care about their product and how it is received, which makes me want to vote with my wallet all the more.
