If Scott Pilgrim came out today would it be a hit?

It was executed really well, almost perfect adaptation imo. Guardians of the Galaxy was a niche property (even moreso than Scott Pilgrim I'd say) and look where it's at now....

Guardians is a space opera. It always had the potential for way more mainstream appeal than a movie about hipster video game nerd bands.

I wouldn't say they marketed it right the last time. I know a lot of people went wtf when the Patel encounter was shown in the trailer.

How is that not marketing it right though?

How do you sell Scott Pilgrim without showing or alluding to the fact its plot is almost entirely built around a series of ridiculous boss fights?

And even if you do figure that out, how does that marketing campaign not backfire once the actual movie starts and people are like "what the fuck, is this movie just a bunch of ridiculous boss fights?"

It would have had a better chance at breaking even. I think it's generally accepted that the studio running it against the Expendables was a significant contributing factor in its underwhelming performance.

But it's not the kind of film that was ever going to have mainstream appeal, unfortunately.

I'm trying to imagine the moviegoer that was torn that weekend between The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim.

lol they couldn't advertise it as an action film, they couldn't sell it as a kids film, it wouldn't really fit as a romantic comedy, even though all those elements are there. Its just a twee little situation piece that a certain section of the young people would like.

today they would just add in more animation and mixed media type shit, and advertise the hell out of the star power. probably sex it up a bit more.

I've thought many times that the Patel fight did a lot of harm being in the trailers so heavily. They have to use it because almost all of the exposition is there, but it just doesn't work. I love the movie and I cringe through that scene every time.

with michael cera as lead. yes.

Man I love that movie so much. Every time someone mentions I have to go and watch it again.
The only thing it really messes up is showing what shitty people Scott and Ramona are.

A related issue is that it makes the Knives and Scott relationship seem less selfish and fucked up on Scott's part, to the point the audience is disappointed they don't get together.

Other than the fact that the cast on a whole is way bigger now than they were then, I don't think it would make a difference.

I might have to revisit this movie. It gets a ton of praise but when I saw it at release I remember getting bored. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood or something.

I loved the movie but hated Cera.

I will forgive even Cera being in the movie though because it had a Xenogears reference. So I will forgive anything.

The first half is really and truly fantastic. Then they ran out of source material and everything after the Todd fight is kinda downhill.

i could see the movie doing well if it were released about 10 years later, filling a Dazed and Confused kind of niche.... movie was relatable to 80s kids growing into young adulthood but 2010 was too early to 'bank on nostalgia'

Looking at BvS threads people still hate him.

I only liked two memes that came after the film. The one where he says "but that's hard" and big eyes one. That's the pinnacle of my enjoyment from it.

I did enjoy the games and it's music though.

I don't think anything you could do would make Scott Pilgrim do significantly better at the box office. While you could lean on the supporting cast more, your main character is still Michael Cera who isn't really in the mainstream anymore. The film just isn't that marketable, despite the film being perfect imo.

Not as long as Michael Cera's in it.

To be fair, the tone of the film is also a bit weird. The way the characters speak seems unnatural in comparison to the comics.

Nobody gave a shit.

The main problem with Scott Pilgrim was that they showed it every single night at SDCC.

The movie single-handedly started the Hilton Bayfront ad curse (which has been broken by The Strain).

That was me, actually. That was legit me. It was my birthday week and I wanted to see a shitty film with friends.

I don't care if it would or not. It's a classic to me and would be so if it made $7M or $700M. Edgar Wright is still one of the best in the biz.

If they got literally anyone else on the planet as their lead instead of Michael Cera.

But at this point, who cares? It was a good movie, the books are still awesome, and the legacy lives on in Lil Uzi Vert; LUV Is Rage EP 2 available for streaming soon

Pure uncensored Trash.

I really enjoy it, but I doubt Scott Pilgrim would have been a huge financial success, even if it had released in 2016 or 2017. At best it might have broken even, it was just a bit too niche.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I don't think a movie where the main character is a casual child molester but not also the villain is ever going to have mass appeal.

I mean yeah he's dating a 17 year old but it's explicitly stated that Scott never even kissed her, let alone did anything else with her. It's stated that the furthest he got was "holding hands".

Actually no, they didn't market it right. Barely anybody even knew about it. The folks who who did wrote it off as a "movie for gamers." Had they marketed the actual banter/non-video game parts, a decent amount of people may have gained interest. The movie at the very least could've made its budget/marketing costs back.

Literally everyone I showed the movie to, those who play games, and those who never picked up a controller in their life, enjoyed the movie. Even non-north american natives who didn't pick up on a lot of the pop culture references enjoyed the movie.

It's sort of funny that the actress playing Knives is actually several years older than Michael Cera. He was the right age for his part, and she was close to a decade too old.
