Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

I would, but I took it on a MacBook and my name is in the top right corner. Not really sure if I could get in trouble for sharing it? See if you can't pull a cached version of the site with that price.

I'll try and look for a cached version but couldn't you just crop your name out and send it?

Hello GAF,

I want to jump into the 4k world. I have a ps4 pro and I want some HDR goodness.

Can you guys advise me on some good TV's with all the bells and whistles for 4k? I'm in
EU, Spain.

I currently have a 2012 - 39' LG, wanted something slightly bigger 50' onwards?

If anyone has some recommendations would be great!

Price range?

So yeah, I'm not even getting image retention from Zelda's super bright heart containers on the OLED. Not sure why I even worried in the first place when I've played other games with bright static huds and not doing any damage. These things are bullet proof barring some goofy mishap on the users part, such as leaving a wallpaper on for 24 hours or something.

Then when you use a 4K device the audio goes through the ARC input back to the receiver.

Okay I thought I had this till I tried to get this all sorted after work.

Because I have my 4K source (my PC) going directly to my TV, how do I get sound coming from my receiver if the ARC port is plugged in to the OUT of my receiver.. no Input on the receiver is going to select the OUT port as the port to use.. does my OUT port have to be ARC compatible or something?

The ARC port works when I have my non 4k sources plugged in, but that's just working like any other Receiver/TV setup.

Edit: After some research it looks like I would need an ARC enabled OUT on my receiver?

Hi gaf, I'm planning on transforming our living room into a home theater/ media center and I've been looking at 4K tv's from 65 to 75 inches and I figure this is the best place to ask a couple questions.

Two tv's that caught my are Sony's XBR75X850D and Samsung's UN75JU6500FXZA . Can anyone provide their input on these sets?

Second question pertains more to hardware. Ideally I would like to connect a cable box, sound system, our consoles (PS1,PS2,PS3,PS4,N64,Wii, Dreamcast 360, XBONE), steam link and PC. For the older consoles I would like to use a composite AV to HDMI adapter like this one. Would there be any issues if I then plugged the adapter into an HDMI hub like this one? Would there be any issues if I used multiple hubs?

Last question. Should I hold off and see what releases in the future? I've read about HDMI 2.1, OLED, etc. and am wondering if I should wait for those to come out.

Yeah. You're receiver's output should be labeled ARC. Connect to the TV input that's labeled ARC. You'll probably have to go into your settings and make sure ARC is enabled on both devices.

Watch an episode of a show like Modern Family and see if it looks normal to you. They're panning the camera like 90% of that show. I believe it's fixable though.

I realize I only notice this on Netflix and Amazon streaming from the TV. For example Stranger Things first episode after the Intro when it pans through the trailer the judder is noticeable.

Popped on Zodiac Blu Ray on the PS3 which has lots of pans at the intro and no judder.

Gaming 4K from PC and no judder defected.

Seems like either it's judder because it's a stream and it's a bi product of downloading or it's that the Netflix app isn't 24p or something like that.

Welp, my receiver doesn't have ARC Out. No worries, I'll just keep saving for a 4K receiver and use SPDIF out for my 4K and TV sources

I don't think Rtings actually use any of their TVs extensively.

They do. They buy their own sets and they also keep it for a whole year and update with firmware changes or when someone asks a question. They may have issues, but they are the best site out for reviewing televisions objectively. Look how much they went out of their way for the Q7F. Bought two sets and then even brought Samsung engineers etc. Others barely do a fraction of the testing rtings does. They just overstate some things like viewing angle a lot of the time etc. But I trust them more than most.

One thing I hate about having a receiver is game mode on my VT60. It's so hard to tell if it is still on without digging into the menu and it is active on every picture setting if turned on, you can't customize it per the receivers HDMI input, and there isn't a dedicated button for it on the remote.

Do other newer TV's handle it better? That 100ms of lag on that Sony sets 1080p mode is terrifying.

How long do you guys think it will be before we see affordable OLED televisions with perfect motion resolution and sub 10ms input lag?

I agree, they have the most thorough reviews out there and I 100% trust them. Always look forward to reviews by them :)

Ordered KS8000! I pray that I have no issues with this. I ordered from Costco so I think that I ordered from the best place possible in terms of being able to easily exchange units.

I love my 3D Plasma, but I need need that HDR, 4K, and improved design!

I'm actually not sure what I'll do with the Plasma because I feel like I'll have a hard time selling it within the apartment complex I live in, lol...

I'm assuming that most people will see that it's not 4K and think it's worth the same price as any other 1080P 55 inch set. Maybe mentioning 3D and top picture quality will help...

The in-built Netflix app is buggy. If you go to settings-help-reload Netflix it clears the cache and when you playback the show/film will now be stutter free. I think it is a problem with the resuming of the Netflix app. It doesn't close down completely and the reload is needed.

No Netflix and Amazon always have judder because the apps playback at 60Hz. 3:2 Pulldown judder. You can't get rid of it.

No the correct terminology created by the 3:2 pulldown process is telecine judder.

*sigh* I know the difference between judder and stutter thanks. I've had this set for nigh on a year, know all it's foibles and little quirks. The Netflix app is buggy. It has been for a while. If you resume it, rather than force reload it, you get random frame skips in playback. Not consistently as you would with typical telecine judder.

OP please try what I outlined and see if playback is improved for you.

Bro guy is describing telecine judder and asks if it has to do something with the Netflix app not providing native 24p playback. I answered okay.

And I am explaining that the in-built Netflix app has issues with dropping frames when resuming it. It may account for why he is only having issues with that app. There are almost no Netflix apps that output in 24p. My Roku doesn't either, yet doesn't have these inconsistent frame drops.

As I say, give it a try OP and see how it goes.

So it looks like my LG E6 might have a problem. I've had it since august, and just recently these dark blotches (one up top, and a line going across the bottom) popped up. It's difficult to see in photos, but very easy to see in person. I'm running the "noise cleaner" option right now. Otherwise, I guess I'll give LG a call. It only shows up on red/orange/yellow screens.

Below is a photo of the "line"

I had a sony 850D for a couple of weeks. Motion is good and so are colors, but the HDR is poor and the black levels are attrocious. The TV displays black as gray with IPS glow. I watched The Witch with subtitles and everytime subtitles appeared it would wash out the entire image. I returned it for a Samsung KS8000.

Might be worth trying pulling the plug and leaving it out for a while and connecting up again as a last resort after the clean.

Guess I'll try that. I did the 1-hour clean, and the line is still there as well as the "blotch" at the top of the screen. The line is about 1' wide by 3/8" tall. Hopefully this picture shows it a little better. I circled the area where the line is.

Unfortunately LG service is closed today.

Burn in? Is it at the area where the black bars would be?

When watching a movie? I tired tried a movie. The black bar ends 4-1/2" from the bottom of the screen. The mark begins at about 4", so it would be in the black bar area when watching a movie.

Honestly haven't even watched to many movies on this. Just mainly cable and playing some games on my PS4 (FFXIV, Horizon, FF15). Nothing more than 2-3 hours bursts...

I get stuff like that on my C6 but it appears to be just IR. But the noise clean should of gotten rid of it if so. I second the suggestion of unplugging it for a bit post clean.

WHO DEY!?
I think at this point I am narrowing down to a 930D or 900E. D is of course at this point cheaper but the E looks really compelling.

Ran the clean twice and its still there.. Unplugging it now

If this is burn in, would LG repair it? If not that's ridiculous for a TV that was $5000 when I bought it to get burn in from some casual tv watching/gaming

So I just got two R9 Furies and I was trying to get 4k 60hz set up through a custom resolution in AMD's control station. I was unsuccessful in 4k, but I did manage to overclock? To 1920 x1080 @ 120hz. That's what it read in AMD latency: 120hz. I checked in Windows display and it was still peaked at 60 hz, so I think this is a bug, or I really just put the OLED 120 hz unsupported format.

Thinking about the amount of throughput of 4k 60 hz to 2k @ 120hz. I don't see why the TV couldn't sustain it, I seem to remember these have native 120 hz. Panels.

Thoughts?

Edit: I know LG said the 2016 models are incapable of HFR(High Frame Rate) but that's at 4k they were talking about, I think. I'm curious as to why OLED TVs don't have native 1920x 1080 @120hz.

It's not burn in. You cannot get burn in with these TVs. it's a fault by the look of it. No burn-in is selective in that way. On old plasmas et al, if you watched 2.35:1 material, you would get a line all the way across the screen, not just a few sporadic places.

Either way, you will not get burn in. Temporary image retention? Sure, but nothing permanent.

ahahahhahahahahah, holy shit.... i feel dumb.

Yes, Yes I am 2000 was what I meant to write...

Thought so, but wasn't sure because I've seen others ask the same thing for that low amount lol. Anyway, check prices on the LG B6 in your region.

Well Looks like I'll be calling LG on monday then. After two sessions of the noise cleaner and then unplugging it for 3 hours, the line at the bottom and the blotch at the top are still there. Funny enough, it is only visible on a red/orange/yellow screen. Any other color, or white or black, it is not there. Could it be the panel going bad?
