Press Release:

The groundbreaking sci-fi real-time strategy game remastered in 4K Ultra High Definition, to include all content from the original award-winning game and its renowned expansion, StarCraft: Brood War®.

StarCraft: Remastered maintains the gameplay and balance that set the standard for the RTS genre, while updating graphics and audio, and adding matchmaking, ladder, social features, and more!

IRVINE, California—March 27, 2017—One of the highest rated, most celebrated games of all time has evolved. Blizzard Entertainment today unveiled StarCraft®: Remastered, a reverently crafted modernization of the original award-winning real-time strategy game. StarCraft: Remastered will offer a full graphical overhaul of the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War® expansion, while preserving the sublime gameplay that captivated millions of gamers around the world and served as the foundation for professional global esports.

“StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and esports for almost 20 years,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond.”

The remastered graphics and audio will bring a modern look and feel to the timeless classic, with widescreen UHD support for up to 4K resolution. Other updates will include new illustrations to enhance storytelling in the StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War campaign missions; advanced matchmaking; full connectivity to Blizzard’s gaming network for social features and updates; cloud saving for campaign progress, custom maps, replays, and keybinds; support for eight new languages in addition to the original five; and more. While these improvements will bring StarCraft to the modern era, gameplay and balance have been precisely preserved, for an experience that will feel identical to veteran players.

Blizzard is developing StarCraft: Remastered for release on Windows® and Mac® PCs, with an anticipated release date this summer. Pricing and related information on StarCraft: Remastered will be announced at a later date. I don't get the point of OG getting update and being free when we haven't heard if REmaster is a purchase folks have to make.

SO hyped. I'm so glad they didn't use SC2 graphics but cleaned up the original. Can't freakin' wait!

Tragic victim of fan death
Hilarious that SC Remastered will probably be used for competitive scenes rather than the sequel.

It looks... almost cartoonish?

And do people really dislike SC II that much?

SC2 is a good game, but many feel like they added too many bullshit units, spells, deathballs, insta lose your army if you're not looking, too many harass units.

A lot of people just want a more basic RTS like Brood War.

I don't like it. It's way too clean.

I will say, it's at least effort compared to the bullshit they did with Diablo.

Im not sure what you expected. Honestly the low res nature of the old sprites leaves WAY too much to the imagination for everyone to be happy. Some people are never ever going to be pleased about the interpretation.

Its something that always comes up with these kinds of remasters.

Wow: free-to-play Brood War classic with Fish integration as a concession to the Korean community. They're gunning for a long-term presence in the PC bang and also giving themselves an out if the remaster crashes with the competitive scene. Meanwhile, the rest of us casual scrubs who migrate to the remaster will get it in widescreen.

The new HD version looks... odd.

The typography on the unit cards does look a little out of place.

Not really. In Korea, sure, where SC2 was already hanging by a thread, but globally I think SC2 will get on just fine in the state it's in, surviving in parallel until the current crop of pros slide into retirement or military service. In the west, it's nice that the campaigns will be accessible again but I honestly don't know how much retention there will be on the ladder long-term when BW is so much harder to play. And no players outside of Korea are in a position to compete on a global scale; the culture and institutional expertise just aren't there to generate a thriving competitive pool.

The situation with BW and SC2 is exactly analogous to Melee and SSB4. The newer game is more accessible and "better designed" in the sense of properly, intentionally signalling its advanced mechanics. The older one is more competitively durable and beloved because of its rich cultural legacy and the attachment to player-discovered, probably not-by-design mechanics that gave it immense competitive depth that will probably never be matched by intentional design. Both of them can thrive in parallel; they excel in completely different ways that speak to different player priorities.

The new high-rez looks are slightly odd but i think they're faithful enough to the original i won't be complaining.
Looks a lot better than SC2 in any case.

I remember how I got blasted in my first Starcraft online match (1999) because I didn't know how to ally. Good times.

It will come eventually.

”Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation," Blizzard said.

”We're restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done."
