Atlus announces Deep Strange Journey for 3DS

Eh, another DS port/remake to 3DS? Like some games kinda need it since they weren't that good (EO1 and 2), but this seemed just fine, and DS was only last gen. Would've much preferred a sequel (same goes for Radiant Historia).

I mean... That's one very subjective statement.

The core game was good, but there were a lot of outdated mechanics that the 3rd game improved upon greatly upon which the first 2 could have benefited from. Not sure if you've played them (the DS and 3DS versions), but the Untold remakes vastly improved upon their DS counterparts while staying true to form.

And yes, an opinion is subjective, as is every single opinion on games ever.

ATLUS has been releasing low effort ports since the beginning of time. Not sure why everyone is acting surprised now.

I understand people want PS4/Switch games, but you're following the wrong company if you want a fast transition to new graphics/engines.

Why is Atlus deciding now of all times at the end of 3ds's life to port ds games over? Don't you normally do that at the beginning of a new system?

Give me some new games/sequels Atlus plz.

I guess this takes less staff than new games and most of their staff is actually working on PS4 and Switch titles?

goddamn please someone teach this new artist how to non-japanese or white people. Gore and Jimenez look so fucking off. Space Marine looking as young has he does makes no sense either.

not 100% digging the "new female character = waifubait" mentality, but given their recent track record, I wouldn't be too surprised either.

edit: I never got into Strange Journey so I'm half excited for this, but the redone character designs aren't inspiring confidence, and I'm nervous about the difficulty changes as well.

I'd rather have one medium-effort 3ds game (like a RH sequel) for 2017 to fill the gap until their bigger titles in 2018 and beyond than a handful of ports.

But yeah all their teams are working on console now so there's no one left to do medium-sized handheld games right now.

Kind of sad to see Kaneko's legacy of fantastic art being erased. At this point if they ever remaster Persona 1 and 2 or the PS2 SMT games, I expect they will redesign all the characters. :/

I absolutely dislike that I'm starting to sound like the Atlus Defense Force, but I honestly get the impression that this is less about trying to erase Kaneko's artistic legacy and more about "unifying" the characters by using the same (probably more marketable) artstyle throughout all characters.

I vastly prefer Kaneko over Doi, but I'd rather have Doi do all the design work if it makes sure that nothing looks out of place instead of a hodgepodge of various art styles like the mess that is SMT4.

That actually looks like exactly what they did. Lol.

haha it does actually..... what I meant was like.... take the art, make it higher resolution, period. Stop mucking around with the style.

I mean, you could do it by just manually tracing the lower res images at a higher DPI if it really came down to that, it's fucking easier than making new art!

Or get Kaneko to do just one new character instead of dumbing down every other one. SJ is the most mature SMT title I've played, J-Pop gurl doesn't fit at all either way.

Jimenez I constantly want to kill anyway, so it doesn't matter that much if he looks even douchier. The hell they done to the commander though.

In RH's case I hope they did it because a sequel is in the cards and they're gauging interest.

Not surprised, just disappointed.

I mean they can't even put PS2 classics on PSN in a timely fashion. They literally put all their good games on PS3 right as PS4 was out :lol I mean come on get with the damn times Atlus.

They've got the original art in high res, there's no need for any of that anyway

You can save anywhere in dungeons now. No longer necessary to go to save points to save.

That's actually kinda disappointing. Strange Journey isn't really the same if it's not constantly kicking me in the balls. Where's the fun in wandering enormous, multi-dimensional floors filled with warps, poison tiles, and crazy strong demons you can't escape from if I can just save anywhere?

Welp, my roommate was hoping the 3DS game would be SMT 1 or 2, and literally just started playing Strange Journey this week. So thank/blame him, I guess.

Strange Journey is the best dungeon crawler MegaTen ever. Yes, better than SMT III.

Strange Journey's definitely harder. It might be the hardest game I've ever played and it definitely has a distinct and attractive charm to it, but SMT3's unrivaled as a whole package. Yeah, it's easy by comparison (especially with the candelabra demons in the Maniax edition which totally break the balance), but the atmosphere is sublime.

Goddamnit, now I kinda regret buying that DS copy last year...

Oh well, on the bright side that's one less title on the backlog, I suppose. I have way too many unplayed SMT games, anyway.

Never regret having the original when a remake is being changed.

I bought SJ and RH last year and couldn't care less considering that they look like straight ports with worse art direction (plus, I probably won't be able to play these versions in EU either way).

The music is still so fucking good.

Really surprised by this, to be honest! I always thought they saw this game as some sort or black sheep of the series, with the non-Tokyo setting and all (yes, I know it started development as SMT4).

Even with the odd art changes, I'm very happy this entry gets some more attention. Easily the one that impressed me the most, partly because it was my first SMT game.

You guys think these (rh and sj) are really coming to na? On the one hand the localization is mostly done right from the originals? But we're talking about 3ds games in 2018 and beyond. Not like atlus minds being the last ones to leave old systems.

I think Deep Strange Journey has a chance to come overseas.

I'm fairly new to SMT, so I don't really have any attachment to the old art style. Given the choice, I'll always lean towards playing the more modern version. If only because of how crappy DS games tend to look on my 3DS XL. I don't regret owning it from a collecting standpoint but, unless the remake doesn't get localized, I probably won't be playing it now.

NA when!?
oh god this is makin me wanna start a new game but i dont have the time at the moment.

edit-@ falconxcrunner
start it-i think youll have time for a run as atlus is jammed atm with releases

Yeah, same here. I mean what else does Atlus USA have in their backlog?

After Persona 5 and Caligula Effect are out, I think the rest is all 3DS games, no? SMT HD is just beginning proper development, so we're left with EO5, Radiant Historia, Etrian MD2 and DSJ. Out of those, I imagine EO is already being localized, and after that I imagine DSJ would take priority over the rest considering the SMT brand already has a more or less proven audience in the west.

I'm sure I'm missing a couple of titles, but all things considered focusing on 3DS titles doesn't really sound too crazy to me when most of what their parent company is making is 3DS games anyway.

Like I said in the other thread, despite some aspects that worry me a bit or left me a bit disappointed (waifu character, character design changed, didn't a remake that soon...), I'm really happy about this.
The best SMT around imo, and the fact it'll get some QOL improvements to make it more accessible should really help since it was the hardest SMT game (mainline) out there. Fantastic game, great story, great dungeons. Hope we'll get it in the west soon after, and that people will give it a try.
