The lack of new game announcements for the Nintendo Switch.

As the weeks go on, I'm starting to wonder what everyone thinks about the lack of new game announcements for the NS. I know haters can take this idea and run with it, but if you're not into Mario Kart, what's next for you for the system? My wife and I have decided to run through LEGO City: Undercover in two player mode as an interesting exercise since we beat the game on the Wii U years ago. Doing it again in two player mode should be pretty fun.

However, as the days pass, I really wonder about what the software outlook is going to be going forward. There have been so few new game announcements for the system in recent weeks that it's starting to get a little worrying. I mean, we did get the new Seiken Densetsu announcement that will hopefully lead to something new in the future, but there are surprisingly few NS games that have been announced recently. Why games like the upcoming Radiant Historia game isn't coming to the system and is going to the 3DS (when that system can still even play the DS version) is baffling. Odds are the NS isn't getting Destiny 2, Red Dead 2, or any other big third party games. It just seems like games are getting announced all the time and almost none of them are for the NS.

What made me really think about this is when I took a look at the Japanese eShop this morning and, man, it's bad. Worse than the U.S. shop, I think. At least we've been getting some cool indie stuff, but over there the last game of note they got was King of Fighter's '94. Japanese devs aren't giving the system any love at all. No indies to fill in the gap, either. It was a little shocking since I figured Japan would have more interesting stuff flowing out fairly often. Doesn't seem to be case.

On top of that, I just fail to see why companies aren't really talking about their games on the system, either. So we know that Rayman is coming to the system, but we've seen one trailer (might be two, actually) and then it's all quiet. We know that Ubisoft is bringing Steep, but they haven't really said a peep about it. So we can't really even talk about the games we already know about, and there haven't been many announcements of new stuff, either.

I know it's a little early to get all doom and gloom and things can change in the next couple of months, but as someone not interested in Mario Kart or Arms, it's something I noticed when trying to find more information on games I may be interested in outside of Nintendo's games.

It would be nice if companies would at least throw us a bone and even tease some cool stuff or something interesting. I don't need a new game every day, but some interesting stuff to talk about or add to my wish list would be good. It'd be nice if Nintendo did a Direct that talked about upcoming 3rd party games.

What do you guys think?

I think that it's better to wait for E3 and then judge

(if you expected Destiny 2 or Red Dead 2 for Switch you might want to reconsider your purchase btw... )

E3 is right around the corner. I'm sure we'll see more stuff then.

I'm probably grabbing Snake Pass this week. I'm still working through FAST RMX now that I'm "done" with Zelda as well.

#1: E3 is coming up.

#2: They just did an incredible indie showcase of upcoming games.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I would at least wait until e3 - system hasnt been out for a month. Most pubs are waiting to see how the console performs after the launch month.

There isnt much reason to announce something now, when the dev/pub wasnt ready to announce it prior to the Switches launch. Also the "big games" you are talking about....not many of them have been announced lately, the announcement season is just starting.

Splatoon 2 in the summer and Super Mario Odyssey in the fall is enough for me (on top of Mario Kart), but I'm sure that people are hoping for a lot from Nintendo at E3. Hopefully, that's where you'll get your announcements.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Arms is set for spring but doesn't have a release date so I'd imagine there will be a Direct before E3. and then there's also E3. plus there were a lot of games announced for the indie showcase and a good bit of them are due out before the fall.

I'm sure E3 will have a bunch of announcements. Currently looking forward to MK8, Puyo Puyo Tetris and Splatoon 2 quite a bit (as far as what is coming out relatively soon)

Most publishers are taking a "wait and see" approach to the system, I would imagine.

The Wii U burned a lot of Nintendo faithful companies HARD (Ubisoft, namely) and on top of that you've got companies that haven't bothered with Nintendo in ages, if ever, that need even more convincing.

It's going to be fairly dry for a bit before things pick up in the fall.

Edit: And yeah, expect a slew of Fall/Winter announcements at E3 as well.

Snake Pass, Youka-Laylee, and Puyo Puyo Tetris AR eon my immediate radar. ARMS & Mario Kart 8 look great. As far as the months past Spring, I'm assuming E3 will bring some announcements. Likely from indies putting projects out on the system.

Splatoon 2 will also fill a lot of time.

I assume we already know almost all of what's coming 2017, and they will announce 2018 games at E3.

No indies to fill in the gap, either.

For someone concerned with game announcements for Switch you haven't really been paying attention, huh? They announced a bunch of indies coming to Switch just before launch.

Wasnt it already clear that this thing wont see most 3rd Party games? A Nintendo Console these days is only really useful of your care about their IPs IMO.

I feel like there's too much to play. I mean, how many games can you play at once?

I've got Zelda, Bomberman, three Shovel Knight campaigns, VOEZ and Snipperclips to play and am waiting on a price drop to pick up 1 2 Switch. Soon I'll also have Mario Kart and Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Edit: if none of these games interest you then you probably bought the system too early.

Yo, if more than a week passes between "MEGATON ANNOUNCEMENTS" they fucked up, clearly.

It's not that, just that there haven't been many games that have interested me and the games I'm interested in have been announced, but we don't know anything about them. I'm extremely interested in getting to know more about Steep, for example, but they haven't said anything about it. The next "big" game is Mario Kart and if you're not into that, then there's not much going on for a while. At least those of us in the West have indie games that have been trickling onto the eShop, but poor Japanese folks got nothing going on there.

All they needed to do is release VC at launch to allow them time to build the library. Still cannot fathom why they wouldn't.

OP apparently hasn't been paying attention or even looking in the e-shop, considering there are over 25 games in there. Just today we got Snake Pass and Has-Been Heroes.

This basically nails it. Most third party publishers are likely to wait for the Switch to prove itself as a successful platform before jumping in.

Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 are way too demanding for a handheld like the Switch (like it or not, but all the power is in the tablet) and Take Two and Activision don't think it's worth the investment to downgrade those games for the Switch audience - and I can understand why.
On the other side are the Japanese developers, that usually make less demanding games. However, those tend to stick to old hardware. As a comparison, the first Japanese PS4 exclusive released in October 2014, when the console was out for seven months over there. The DS and PSP still got major support until over a year after the launch of the 3DS and Vita respectively. It takes a while before they switch platforms.

That Japanese support will come: Story of Seasons, Tales of, Taiko no Tatsujin, BlazBlue and other series have installments announced for the Switch. Just wait. About the western AAA games, I'm not so sure. Maybe they'll find it worth the investment eventually. Otherwise it'll be indies and maybe some ports from the PS3/Xbox 360 era?

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I think, in general, all game announcements for everything will be sparse this close to E3.

E3 is 2.5 months away. That doesn't feel close to me.

So we're gonna spend over 3 months after a systems launch without any announcements because E3 is "close".

That's kind of frustrating. TBH I'm keeping my expectations in check: Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey this year. Not gonna expect anymore.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If E3 goes by and we see a similar state of affairs, then I'd start to worry.

I think it would be better to see up to the end of 2017 / beginning of 2018: E3 could still be too soon for some projects to be showed off. 9 months-to-1 year sounds like a better wait window to see how the console sells, how some third party titles are received, how third parties will respond, etc.etc.

I didn't expect AAA releases from third parties for this system.

My upcoming lineup is Snake Pass, Yooka-Laylee, Mario Kart, ARMS, Rime and Splatoon from now til E3.

This is what happens when the console is less than a month old. If you look at PS4, it has a good amount of games coming out, but they were announced 1 or 2 years beforehand. Games for Switch from third party developers will start making their way consistently around the Aug. to Oct. period before the Holidays.

Either way, like every system launch, it makes a big splash at the beginning, takes a little time to build up, and then after a couple of months the games start coming in. The good thing about Switch is that it has (arguably) a great game to play every month until E3 like BOTW (March), MK8D (April), ARMS (May), Splatoon 2 (June).

Ever since about 1 year or so (maybe less?) into the Wii VC Nintendo has been progressively more stupid with the VC. It's maddening. I don't want to wait upwards of 4 years to upgrade previously purchased first party SNES titles.

The system came out in March, and its still March. I'm not concerned yet. Besides, I'm still only half way through with Zelda, and I'm taking my sweet time in that game exploring the vast landscapes. If you rushed through the game to beat Ganon you did it wrong.

Why buy a system at launch if you cant wait for 3 months till e3 and its "frustrating" for you ? Come on....unless this is your first launch.

I own Metal Slug 3, KoF '98, and Blaster Master. I check the eShop on Thursdays to see what's been added. I hope the next Neo Geo game is Metal Slug. I guess the main thing for me is that I've played all of these games already for many years. I was trying to get into FAST: RMX, but the difficulty is taking me out of the game. I have Zelda, but I'm really not interested in playing it. I think I've put in 5 or 6 hours so far. Loved the Splatoon Testfire and would be playing that if it was out.

Not many new experiences so far. Hell, I'd take a Batman game to be honest. I got through the Wii U drought with Batman and Darksiders 2.

yeah reading the op it sounds like hes waiting for the shoe to drop for third party AAA

time to realize the reality of this system

those types of demanding games will be limited if they appear at all

only titles that could reasonably be built to scale for the system could even have a remote chance

Nintendo has a decent amount of indie titles coming to the system as well as a bunch more several months out. Outside of that, people should probably expect the same trickle of games directly from Nintendo until larger 3rd party publishers think the install base is large enough to develop or port games to the system.
